ABSTRACT

Lithium fluoride is a well known material used for dosimetry. In the last years it was proposed and tested also as imaging detector for X-ray microscopy. Optical microscopy represents the oldest and most used imaging technique for medicine and cell biology investigations; later other imaging techniques, including electron microscopy, were introduced. The recent technological developments in the soft X-ray field, concerning sources, optics and detectors, have been increased the interest of physicians and biologists for X-ray microscopy, mainly to obtain in vivo imaging of cells. An innovative imaging detector has been proposed and tested by researchers of C.R. ENEA Frascati, as handy, versatile and compact plate for soft X-ray imaging with very high spatial resolution, wide dynamic range, large field of view and easy to read by an optical microscope. Scientific and technological applications can be foreseen in several fields, as nanotechnologies, materials, photonics, life science and microscopy (including cell imaging, also in vivo).

ABSTRACT

Even if nuclear plants are inoperative in Italy, nevertheless the use of ionizing radiations is very diffused, particularly in medical and industrial fields. As a consequence every year notifications of possible professional illnesses appearing in radiation workers are lodged and the fact obviously lead the S.Pre.S.A.L. (Prevention and Safety of Workplace Service) to inspect. Therefore the object of the inspection, the opportunity of collaboration for the judgment of the event and the critical aspects that sometimes arise in the interpretative formalities of the event itself are discussed from the approved physician point of view. Usually this happens because of the absolute peculiarity of the Medical Radiation Protection Surveillance and of the fact that often the UPG is not an approved physician: namely this fact can create discordances in the interpretation of the damage entity, of the causation and of possible penal responsibilities. Besides, very often, during the inspection collaborations, representing a sure growth stimulus for the competences of all the concerned subjects, occur.

ABSTRACT

The aim of the present study is toinvestigate the genotoxic effect of THzradiation in human peripheral bloodlymphocytes following 20 minutes exposureto 1 mW average power Free Electron Laserradiation in the frequency range 120-140GHz. For this purpose 9 healthy donors wereemployed and cytokinesis block techniquewas applied to study micronucleusfrequency and cell proliferation. Theresults obtained indicate that all theelectromagnetic conditions adopted so far do not alter the investigated parameters, suggesting absence of direct chromosomaldamage and alteration of cell cyclekinetics (two tailed paired Student's test:p> 0.05 in all cases).
