ABSTRACT

Interpersonal interactions rely on various communication channels, both verbal and non-verbal, through which information regarding one's intentions and emotions are perceived. Here, we investigated the neural correlates underlying the visual processing of hand postures conveying social affordances (i.e., hand-shaking), compared to control stimuli such as hands performing non-social actions (i.e., grasping) or showing no movement at all. Combining univariate and multivariate analysis on electroencephalography (EEG) data, our results indicate that occipito-temporal electrodes show early differential processing of stimuli conveying social information compared to non-social ones. First, the amplitude of the Early Posterior Negativity (EPN, an Event-Related Potential related to the perception of body parts) is modulated differently during the perception of social and non-social content carried by hands. Moreover, our multivariate classification analysis (MultiVariate Pattern Analysis - MVPA) expanded the univariate results by revealing early (<200 ms) categorization of social affordances over occipito-parietal sites. In conclusion, we provide new evidence suggesting that the encoding of socially relevant hand gestures is categorized in the early stages of visual processing.

ABSTRACT

Conspicuous deficits in face recognition characterize prosopagnosia. Information on whether agnosic deficits may extend to non-facial body parts is lacking. Here we report the neuropsychological description of FM, a patient affected by a complete deficit in face recognition in the presence of mild clinical signs of visual object agnosia. His deficit involves both overt and covert recognition of faces (i.e. recognition of familiar faces, but also categorization of faces for gender or age) as well as the visual mental imagery of faces. By means of a series of matching-to-sample tasks we investigated: (i) a possible association between prosopagnosia and disorders in visual body perception; (ii) the effect of the emotional content of stimuli on the visual discrimination of faces, bodies and objects; (iii) the existence of a dissociation between identity recognition and the emotional discrimination of faces and bodies. Our results document, for the first time, the co-occurrence of body agnosia, i.e. the visual inability to discriminate body forms and body actions, and prosopagnosia. Moreover, the results show better performance in the discrimination of emotional face and body expressions with respect to body identity and neutral actions. Since FM's lesions involve bilateral fusiform areas, it is unlikely that the amygdala-temporal projections explain the relative sparing of emotion discrimination performance. Indeed, the emotional content of the stimuli did not improve the discrimination of their identity. The results hint at the existence of two segregated brain networks involved in identity and emotional discrimination that are at least partially shared by face and body processing.

ABSTRACT

Testis leiomyoma is a very rare neoplasm. It is very difficult to perform an exact preoperative diagnosis; only histological examination can prove the presence of a leiomyoma. In our case radical orchidectomy was performed because of complete substitution of normal parenchyma, the extreme rarity at long-term follow-up of a reported benign intratesticular neoplasm, and the imperfect sensitivity of the extemporary histological examination.

ABSTRACT

A rare case of bilateral pararenal abscess secondary to staghorn calculi is reported. It is characterized by a singular evolution in both side, with fistulization along iliopsoas muscle until the Scarpa triangle. Considering the seriousness of this illness, the importance of an early surgical therapy of complicated staghorn lithiasis is underlined.

ABSTRACT

Eighteen patients with inflammatory process of the prostate met criteria for the inclusion in the study: 1) non bacterial prostatitis; 2) no previous treatment. Then they were randomized into three groups as it follows: terazosine, tamsulosin and placebo. Alpha-blockers and placebo were given for two months, after which further uroflowmetry was performed. Symptom score was evaluated before and after treatment. Terazosine was effective in reducing TO (p = 0.01) as tamsulosin and placebo did not. Both terazosine (p = 0.034) and tamsulosin (p = 0.006) reduced max TQ as placebo did not. Symptom score significantly improved in patients receiving terazosine (p = 0.0002) and tamsulosin (p = 0.001) while insignificantly in whose receiving placebo.

ABSTRACT

The Authors report two cases of renal leiomyosarcomas with atypical clinical features. Despite a malignant histological picture, nephron-sparing surgery was performed. The two patients are alive and disease-free at six years and fifteen months respectively. Specific radiologic findings, indications and rationale for conservative treatment are discussed.

ABSTRACT

A case of metachronous renal cell carcinoma is reported in a 52-year-old male patient who had previously undergone radical nephrectomy for cancer in 1989. He was thereafter monitored with annual CT-scans. In January 1994, a small, solid, renal parenchymal mass was detected in the opposite kidney. Following that, three consecutive abdominal CT-scans were carried out over the year in order to evaluate any changes. Subsequently, elective right nephron-sparing resection was performed. This report discusses neoplasm detection, evolution and clinical approach in a patient with previous nephrectomy for cancer.

ABSTRACT

The authors report a case of renal leiomyosarcoma and a review of the literature, underlining the difficulties of making a correct differential diagnosis with the benign neoplasms of the kidney and in performing correct surgical therapy.
