ABSTRACT

The "in-fans", who cannot speak, needs a narrator, especially a psychoanalyst in the transference in order to be able to hear again the "silent" language that is expressed in the time of the "Jetztzeit". Through a reflection on Freud's work on aphasias and his exchange of letters with Fliess, it is possible to identify important previews which constitute a sort of pre-semiotics, as well as a theory on memory. In addition, history, sociology, semiotics and the neurosciences are all necessary interlocutors for developing the issue of The Infantile in psychoanalysis.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

STUDY OBJECTIVES: REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by motor activity during sleep with dream mentation. Aggressiveness has been considered a peculiar feature of dreams associated with RBD, despite normal score in aggressiveness scales during wakefulness. We aimed to measure daytime aggressiveness and analyze dream contents in a population of patients with Parkinson disease (PD) with and without RBD. DESIGN: This is a single-center prospective observational study; it concerns the description of the clinical features of a medical disorder in a case series. SETTING: The study was performed in the Department of Neurosciences of the Catholic University in Rome, Italy. PATIENTS: Three groups of subjects were enrolled: patients with PD plus RBD, patients with PD without RBD, and healthy controls. INTERVENTIONS: The diagnosis of RBD was determined clinically and confirmed by means of overnight, laboratory-based video-polysomnography. For the evaluation of diurnal aggressiveness, the Buss-Perry Aggression Questionnaire (BPAQ) was used. The content of dreams was evaluated by means of the methods of Hall and Van De Castle. MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Patients with PD without RBD displayed higher levels of anger, and verbal and physical aggressiveness than patients with PD and RBD and controls. Patients with PD and RBD and controls did not differ in hostility. CONCLUSIONS: It can be hypothesized that a noradrenergic impairment at the level of the locus coeruleus could, at the same time, explain the presence of RBD, as well as the reduction of diurnal aggressiveness. This finding also suggests a role for REM sleep in regulating homeostasis of emotional brain function.

ABSTRACT

These notes provide an account of the ten years of work of the Working Party on Theoretical Issues of the European Psychoanalytical Federation. They describe the research projects that have been initiated, beginning with the theme of the implicit, preconscious, private theories of the analyst in clinical practice, and ending with the on-going project on the implicit theories on trauma as analyzed in texts and especially in interviews with seven experts on trauma. I explain the methodology applied and the significance that, in our opinion, this type of work acquires in contemporary psychoanalysis. It serves to bring together analysts from different regions, languages and cultures in order to facilitate the sharing of knowledge and respect for differences.

ABSTRACT

The author reflects on the concept of conflict in contemporary psychoanalysis, and especially in European psychoanalysis. In the latter, this concept does not seem to have aroused significant interest. This does not necessarily mean that conflict has been rejected or replaced; rather, there has been a greater focus on preconflictual stages of development. Indeed, conflict is generally implicit in psychoanalytic work, and, like many other concepts, it has very different and at times divergent meanings, both in various psychoanalytic schools of thought and within the same school. The author presents a clinical example to illustrate some of the possible choices of the analyst at work concerning the use of the concept of conflict.
