ABSTRACT

A membrane-aerated biofilm reactor (MABR) combines membrane technology with biofilm processes and has unique advantages in the treatment of organic wastewater and volatile wastewater. The common membranes for MABR systems usually have relatively uneven pore structures and low bubble point pressure, resulting in unsatisfactory O2 utilization and wastewater treatment efficiency. In this work, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) and UiO-66 (a Zr-based metal organic framework) were coated on the surface of a commercial polypropylene (PP) hollow fiber membrane to prepare oxygen-rich MABR membranes and modules, which showed an attractive O2 utilization rate and wastewater treatment efficiency. The bubble points of the PDMS and PDMS-UiO-66 membranes were significantly higher than those of the PP membranes, and the PDMS-UiO-66 membranes had better oxygen enrichment capacity and biological affinity. The optimal PDMS-UiO-66 membrane modules had an O2 permeance of 31.65 GPU (1 GPU = 3.35 × 10-10 mol m-2 s-1 Pa-1), with O2/N2 selectivity of 2.21. The membrane hanging effect and processing capacity for domestic sewage were greatly improved. This study may provide insights and guidelines to fabricate porous mixed matrix membranes and modules in the industry for MABR. The developed products are expected to be applied in the actual separation process.

ABSTRACT

Pyrite (FeS2) is one of the potential candidates for advanced rechargeable Li-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to its inherent capacity (849 mAh g-1), environmental friendliness, and abundant natural resources. However, the volume expansion of FeS2 and the dissolution of polysulfide in the electrochemical reaction severely limit its application in the field of energy conversion and storage. Herein, FeS2 nanoparticles are encapsulated in S/N co-doped three-dimensional multi-channel structural carbon nanofibers (FeS2@CNFs) through the electrospinning method. As a cathode material for LIBs, FeS2@CNFs demonstrated excellent rate property and cyclic stability. The 3FeS2@CNFs (weight ratio of FeS2 is 30%) present the initial capacity of 1,336.7 mAh g-1 and the remaining 856.5 mAh g-1 at 0.02A g-1 after 100 circles. The favorable electrochemical properties have confirmed that carbon nanofibers can enhance the electroconductivity of electrodes, reduce the volume collapse of FeS2, and remit the dissolution of polysulfide during the Li+ ions insertion/de-insertion process. In addition, co-doped S/N can supply abundant active sites for electrochemical reactions, providing enough space for Li+ ion storage. The results indicate that 3FeS2@CNFs is a cathode with a developmental prospect for LIBs.

ABSTRACT

Direct ethanol fuel cells (DEFCs) have attracted more and more attention because of their unique advantages such as low cost and low toxicity. However, sluggish C-C bond cleavage during the ethanol electrooxidation reaction (EOR) in acidic media results in a lower energy yield and gravely hinders the commercialization of DEFCs. Therefore, it is very necessary to develop an anode catalyst with high performance, high stability and low cost to solve this problem. In this paper, Pt/MoCx/MWCNTs nanocomposites with different mass ratios of PtMo were obtained through a molecular self-assembly technology. The structure and morphology of Pt/MoCx/MWCNTs nanocomposites were characterized by several techniques such as XRD, FESEM, XPS, etc. The electrochemical performance and stability of Pt/WCx/MWCNTs electrocatalysts toward EOR were investigated in acid electrolytes. The results show that PtMo exists in the form of alloy. The size of Pt/MoCx nanoparticles is very uniform with an average size of ∼24 nm. The Pt/MoC0.25/MWCNTs exhibits excellent electrocatalytic activities with an electrochemically active surface area of 37.1 m2 g-1, a peak current density of 610.4 mA mgPt -1 and a steady-state current density of 39.8 mA mgPt -1 after 7,200 s, suggesting that the Pt/MoC0.25/MWCNTs is a very promising candidate for application in EOR of DEFCs.

ABSTRACT

Developing mixed matrix membranes (MMMs) is challenging because the interface between different matrices often forms undesirable structures. Herein, we demonstrate a method of creating suitable CO2-selective channels based on interface regulation that greatly enhances membrane separation performance. The poly(vinylamine), which also acts as a polymer matrix, was immobilized onto covalent organic frameworks (COFs) to obtain polymer-COF hybrid materials (COFp). The COFp and polymer matrix are highly compatible because they have the same segment. The polymer matrix was induced to penetrate the oversized COFp, resulting in an amino-environmental pore wall and appropriately sized CO2-selective channels dispersed in MMMs. The MMMs exhibited satisfactory membrane performance for CO2/N2, CO2/CH4, and CO2/H2 separation. A CO2 transport model for preferential adsorption and transport is clearly presented for the first time. The membrane separation mechanism is also discussed. This work demonstrates potential applications for material, interface, and membrane investigations.

ABSTRACT

Both bulk crystals and nanocrystals of two helical complexes, [Cu(µ2-L)(H2O)]n (1) and {[Cu(µ2-L)(H2O)]·2H2O}n (2) (H2L = thiazolidine-2,4-dicarboxylic acid), have been synthesized with the chiralities of right-handedness (1) and left-handedness (2), respectively. 4-Cyanopyridine and poly(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) have been applied to control the synthesis of complexes with different helicities in bulk-crystal and nanocrystal forms, respectively. 2 can be irreversibly transformed to 1 under heating. Associated with the conformation changing, the symmetry alters between nonpolar and polar space groups.

ABSTRACT

Taking the multiple ecosystem services (grain supply, meat supply, fuel-wood supply, water resource conservation and soil retention) as test objects, this paper analyzed the interactions among these services, the interaction modes and the possible affecting factors in 31 counties of Jinghe watershed. At the county level, there existed great differences in the interactions among different pairs of the ecosystem services. The grain supply showed significant positive correlation with meat supply but negative correlation with soil retention, whereas the water resource conservation showed significant positive correlations with fuel-wood supply and soil retention. As for the interaction modes of the ecosystem services, 24 counties were primarily of regulation services, 3 counties were of supply and regulation services in balance, and 4 counties were primarily of grain supply. The total ecosystem service index of the interaction modes in each county varied greatly, with 5.1 times of difference between the maximum (Jingyuan County) and the minimum value (Yanchi County). The total ecosystem service index was significantly positively correlated with precipitation and soil total nitrogen, and negatively correlated with solar hours. The increase of farmland had negative effects, while that of shrub land and grassland had great positive effects on the total ecosystem service index, but the increase of forestland had less effects.

ABSTRACT

Chiral Ni(II) coordination compounds with structures of [NiL(H(2)O)(3)] (1) and {[NiL(H(2)O)]·0.5H(2)O}(n) (2) (H(2)L = thiazolidine 2,4-dicaboxlic acid) have been successfully synthesized by the reaction of Ni(CH(3)COO)(2)·4H(2)O and H(2)L in aqueous solution at 25 and 80 °C, respectively. From the same procedure with polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a surfactant, another corresponding micrometer-scale Ni(II) coordination polymer, {[NiL(H(2)O)(2)]·H(2)O}(n) (3), has been obtained at both 25 and 80 °C, which shows a different structure (one-dimensional, 1D) than both 1 (discrete molecule) and 2 (3D). The conversions of structures and conformations are directed by temperature and surfactant (PVP), as confirmed by powder and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Circular Dichroism (CD) and Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) measurements of the products have been investigated as well, which indicate the potential applications of these products in chiral and nonlinear optical (NLO) areas.

ABSTRACT

Low-symmetric complexes {[Co(µ(2)-L)(H(2)O)(2)]·H(2)O}(n) (1) and {[Co(µ(3)-L)(H(2)O)]·0.5H(2)O}(n) (2) and corresponding nanocrystals were obtained, which exhibit structural recurrence behaviour at various temperatures as well as changes of chiral, nonlinear optical and ferroelectric properties.
