ABSTRACT

This report describes the occurrence of the rabies virus in two species of wild animals in the urban area of Montes Claros (MOC), Minas Gerais State, Brazil, in May 2023. The virus has been detected in frugivorous chiropterans (Artibeus sp) and marmosets (Callithrix penicillata). This is the first notified case of the rabies virus in the species C. penicillata in the urban area of MOC. Our findings show that the rabies virus is circulating in the urban area of MOC; therefore, permanent preventive measures must be adopted to avoid infection of other animals and humans.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study analyzed the prevalence of complete neonatal screening (CNS) of children aged under 2 years in Brazil and associated factors using data from the 2013 (n=4,442) and 2019 (n=5,643) national health surveys. We conducted a cross-sectional study to compare prevalence of CNS (eye, ear and heel prick tests) adopting 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) and a 5% significance level. Crude and adjusted Poisson regression was performed to estimate prevalence ratios (PR) and 95%CI to assess the association between socioeconomic, demographic and health variables and CNS. There was a statistically significant increase in CNS prevalence, from 49.2% (95%CI: 47.1-51.3) in 2013 to 67.4% (95%CI: 65.5-69.3) in 2019. However, large disparities persist across states and between sociodemographic groups. In both years, CNS prevalence was lowest among brown and black children, those from families in the three lowest income quintiles, children without health insurance, those from families registered in the Family Health Strategy and children living in the North, cities outside the state capital/metropolitan regions and rural areas. Despite the increase in prevalence of CNS, deep individual and contextual inequalities persist, posing challenges for health policies.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: To verify the influence of verbal intellectual-cognitive skills on speech perception in noise, in elderly with sensorineural hearing loss, considering education, age, and degree of hearing loss. METHODS: 36 elderly between 60 and 89 years old with bilateral sensorineural hearing loss participated in the study. After psychological assessment using the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Adults (WAIS-III), they were grouped into (GI) 24 elderly without cognitive alteration and (GII) 12 elderly with risk of cognitive alteration. They underwent otorhinolaryngological assessment, audiological interview, pure tone audiometry, and assessment of speech perception in noise using the Hearing in Noise Test (HINT-Brazil). The Mann-Whitney U statistical test compared the results between the groups, and the Spearman correlation verified the variable's age, degree of hearing loss, and level of education. RESULTS: There was no difference between the groups in the ability to perceive speech in noise, except in the noise on the left condition, in which GII showed better performance in HINT-Brazil. The degree of hearing loss and level of education influenced the perception of speech in noise. The level of education was correlated with the WAIS-III results. CONCLUSION: The decline in verbal intellectual-cognitive skills did not affect speech perception of noise in the elderly with hearing loss. The degree of hearing loss and level of education influenced the performance of the elderly in the speech perception test in noise. Performance in verbal cognitive skills varied according to the level of education.

ABSTRACT

Natural products are usually considered harmless; however, these substances need to be consumed with caution. Biological assays with plant models are a suitable alternative for prospective studies to assess natural product-initiated toxicity. The aim of this study was to examine the toxic potential of leaf and flower extracts derived from Tropaeolum majus L. a widely used plant in traditional medicine. Seeds of Lactuca sativa L. were exposed to T. majus extracts and based upon the seedling growth curve values, the 50% Inhibition Concentration (IC50) was calculated and applied for cell cycle analysis exposure. Both extracts contained organic acids, proteins, amino acids, and terpene steroids. Sesquiterpene lactones and depside were detected in leaf extracts. The higher concentration tested exhibited a marked phytotoxic effect. The extracts induced clastogenic, aneugenic cytotoxic, and potential mutagenic effects. The possible relationships between the classes of compounds found in the extracts and effects on cells and DNA were determined.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Numerous fetal growth curves have been developed from various subpopulations and geographic locations worldwide. OBJECTIVE: To determine the birthweight standard at the Maternity School and compare it to currently used standards in the clinical practice services. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional, observational, and descriptive study. Data from infants born between 2011 and 2016 were collected from the Maternity School Hospital of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro to define the 10th, 25th, 50th, 75th, and 90th percentiles of the birthweight by gestational age. It was determined the performance of the INTERGROWTH-21st, Fenton, Alexander, and Lubchenco for the Maternity School standards. RESULTS: After the 33rd week of pregnancy, the INTERGROWTH standard was similar to the local standard for small-for-gestational-age infants and Fenton for large-for-gestational-age infants at Maternity School Hospital. The INTERGROWTH standard was found to be inadequate to classify small-for-gestational-age infants, which are babies at major risk for morbidity and mortality at the onset of the 33rd week of pregnancy. CONCLUSION: It was possible to define reference values for birthweight for the maternal school hospital considering at least 33 weeks of pregnancy with a 95% confidence interval. The comparison of the INTERGROWTH, Fenton, Alexander, and Lubchenko standards to the maternal school hospital curve showed that the Fenton curve was the most suitable for the diagnosis of small for gestational age.

ABSTRACT

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus is an ectoparasite of high importance in veterinary medicine and public health. Since synthetic chemicals used to control these ticks can select resistant strains and cause toxic effects in their hosts, there is a need to identify effective substances with fewer adverse effects. For this reason, we investigated the effects of alpha- and beta-pinene, known for their various biological effects, on the mortality and reproductive performance of R. microplus engorged female ticks. The products were diluted in a 2% Tween 80 aqueous solution. The ticks were first weighed and then immersed in the test solutions for five minutes. Then, they were dried with paper towels and fixed dorsoventrally in Petri dishes, totalling five treatment groups for each pinene and a control group treated with the solvent alone. The ticks were monitored daily for mortality, and their eggs were collected and weighed. The larval hatching rate was estimated, and the pre-oviposition and incubation periods were determined. From these data, the following parameters were calculated: egg production index, fertility rate, estimated reproduction rate, percentages of reduction in oviposition and hatching, and product efficacy. Alpha-pinene showed better results at higher concentrations, unlike beta-pinene, which was more effective at lower concentrations. The effectiveness of alpha-pinene was 74% at a concentration of 14.0 µL/mL, while beta-pinene showed 78% efficacy at 2.0 µL/mL. The results indicated for the first time different effects of two isomers in ticks, suggesting that these compounds act on R. microplus females in different ways.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To compare cancer mortality among workers exposed to gamma and X radiation and the general population of the city of São Paulo, as well as that of the subgroup monitored with those not monitored for gamma and X radiation in a work unit with ionizing radiation based in the city of São Paulo. METHODS: Between 2016 and 2021, a retrospective open cohort study was carried out with workers who were employed from 08/31/1956 to 12/31/2016 based on data collected at the company and in official institutions. Standardized mortality ratios (SMR) were calculated by sex, age and calendar period of cancers grouped according to type, risk factor and organ system in two analyses: in the external analysis, the mortality of the study population was compared with that of the general population of the city of São Paulo; In the internal analysis, the mortality of the monitored subgroup was compared with that of the subgroup not monitored for gamma and X radiation. RESULTS: The external mortality analysis showed SMR=0.224 (95%CI 0.208-0.240) and the healthy worker effect, while the internal mortality analysis showed SMR=0.685 (95%CI 0.618-0.758). CONCLUSION: This study showed lower cancer mortality among exposed workers when compared to mortality in the general population and the healthy worker effect. Among workers monitored for gamma and X radiation, cancer mortality was lower when compared to those not monitored.

ABSTRACT

The identification of protein-ligand interactions plays a pivotal role in elucidating biological processes and discovering potential bioproducts. Harnessing the capabilities of computational methods in drug discovery, we introduce an innovative Inverted Virtual Screening (IVS) pipeline. This pipeline Integrated molecular dynamics and docking analyses to ensure that protein structures are not only energetically favorable but also representative of stable conformations. The primary objective of this pipeline is to automate and streamline the analysis of protein-ligand interactions at both genomic and transcriptomic scales. In the contemporary post-genomic era, high-throughput computational screening for bioproducts, biological systems, and therapeutic drugs has become a cornerstone practice. This approach offers the promise of cost-effectiveness, time efficiency, and optimization of laboratory work. Nevertheless, a notable deficiency persists in the availability of efficient pipelines capable of automating the virtual screening process, seamlessly integrating input and output, and leveraging the full potential of open-source tools. To bridge this critical gap, we have developed a versatile pipeline known as BioProtIS. This tool seamlessly integrates a suite of state-of-the-art tools, including Modeller, AlphaFold, Gromacs, FPOCKET, and AutoDock Vina, thus facilitating the streamlined docking of ligands with an expansive repertoire of proteins sourced from genomes and transcriptomes, and substrates. To assess the pipeline's performance, we employed the transcriptomes of Cereus jamacaru (a cactus species) and Aspisoma lineatum (firefly), along with the genome of Homo sapiens. This integration not only improves the accuracy of ligand-protein interactions by minimizing replicability deviations but also optimizes the discovery process by enabling the simultaneous evaluation of multiple substrates. Furthermore, our pipeline accommodates distinct testing scenarios, such as blind docking or site-specific targeting, which are invaluable in applications ranging from drug repositioning to the exploration of new allosteric binding sites and toxicity assessments. BioProtIS has been designed with modularity at its core. This inherent flexibility empowers users to make custom modifications directly within the source code, tailoring the pipeline to their specific research needs. Moreover, it lays the foundation for seamless integration of diverse docking algorithms in future iterations, promising ongoing advancements in the field of computational biology. This pipeline is available for free distribution and can be download at: https://github.com/BBMDO/BioProtIS.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed whether combining photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) with casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride (CPP-ACPF) paste can effectively reduce post-home whitening tooth sensitivity (TS) without compromising shade change. METHODS: Fifty participants were selected and assigned to one of four groups: (1) PLACEBO group-received a placebo paste and PBMT simulation; (2) PBMT group-received a placebo paste + PBMT; (3) CPP-ACPF group-received CPP-ACPF paste and PBMT simulation; (4) CPP-ACPF + PBMT group-received both CPP-ACPF paste and PBMT. The participants used whitening trays containing 22% carbamide peroxide for 2 h a day for 21 days. TS was measured daily using a visual analog scale, while shade change was assessed using a spectrophotometer: before bleaching treatment (T0), after the first (T1), second (T2), and third (T3) weeks of treatment, and 30 days (T4) after completing the whitening treatment. RESULTS: Intragroup analysis revealed that the PLACEBO group had the highest increase in sensitivity during the whitening treatment. The CPP-ACPF and PBMT groups showed no significant difference tooth whitening (TW) between weeks regarding aesthetic change. The CPP-ACPF and PBMT group exhibited a significant reduction in TS between the first and third and between the second and third weeks TW, but not between the first and second. Conversely, the PLACEBO group showed a higher sensitivity than the other groups (p < .05). The CPP-ACPF and PBMT groups did not differ from each other. Furthermore, the CPP-ACPF and PBMT group showed a greater decrease in sensitivity than the PLACEBO group at T1, T2, and T3 (p < .01), and was significantly differed from CPP-ACPF and PBMT groups only at T2 and T3. All groups confirmed TW effectiveness. Student's and paired t-test did not reveal any significant difference between groups (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Therefore, PBMT associated with CPP-ACPF paste can reduce TS without compromising the efficacy of TW.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Coffee cultivation and agroindustry generate residues that are rich in several metabolites. These compounds, such as phenolic compounds and alkaloids, are known for their antioxidant activity and are usually consumed as nutraceuticals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of chemical and antioxidant components of low-pruned coffee stems under different fertilizer regimes. Extractives and lignin composition, histochemical, chromatographic, and antioxidant analyses were performed. RESULTS: Multiple compounds were found to accumulate in the stems of coffee trees. Furthermore, the presence of phenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acid, vanillin, resveratrol, and the alkaloids caffeine and trigonelline varied depending on the type of fertilization. In all samples examined, optimal performance was observed at the highest tested concentration (500 µg mL-1 ). All samples analyzed presented a great performance at the highest concentration tested (500 µg mL-1 ), with the dose 70% and the dose 100%, which is the recommended for the culture, showing the highest values for most of the concentrations and the best half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50 ) when compared with the other samples tested. CONCLUSION: As shown in the results, the reuse of stem residues as antioxidant material, with the potential to be profitable, and has the added benefit of providing a sustainable destination for material that until now has been underutilized. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

ABSTRACT

This review provides a comprehensive analysis of the production, classification, and quality control of cachaça, a traditional Brazilian sugarcane spirit with significant cultural importance. It explores the fermentation and distillation of sugarcane juice, the ageing process in wooden containers, and the regulatory aspects of cachaça labelling. It emphasises the role of quality control in maintaining the spirit's integrity, focusing on monitoring copper levels in distillation stills. Ethyl carbamate (EC), a potential carcinogen found in cachaça, is investigated, with the study illuminating factors influencing its formation and prevalence and the importance of its vigilant monitoring for ensuring safety and quality. It also underscores the control of multiple parameters in producing high-quality cachaça, including raw material selection, yeast strains, acidity, and contaminants. Further, the impact of ageing, wood cask type, and yeast strains on cachaça quality is examined, along with potential uses of vinasse, a cachaça by-product, in yeast cell biomass production and fertigation. A deeper understanding of the (bio)chemical and microbiological reactions involved in cachaça production is essential to facilitate quality control and standardisation of sensory descriptors, promoting global acceptance of cachaça. Continued research will address safety concerns, improve quality, and support the long-term sustainability and success of the cachaça industry.

ABSTRACT

The meat and meat product industry has evolved according to the needs of the market. Consumers are increasingly seeking quality in food. Thus, the concern regarding the excessive use of additives such as preservatives and antioxidants has driven research towards natural, healthy and safe substitutes. Essential oils and plant extracts have been shown to be a good option for resolving this problem. They are completely natural with biological activity, which mainly includes prevention of oxidation and the proliferation of microorganisms, thus arousing the interest of the industry and consumers. This review will present studies published in the last five years regarding the potential of essential oils and plant extracts to act as preservatives and antioxidants in meat and meat products. The forms of application, innovations in the area, alternatives to the incorporation of essential oils and extracts in meat products, effects caused in food, and limitations of applications will be detailed and discussed.
