ABSTRACT

Glycerin contributes to the animal's energy metabolism as an important structural component of triglycerides and phospholipids. The present study was carried out to evaluate the effect of replacing corn with 0, 5, 10, and 15% of glycerin in terms of performance, digestibility, carcass yield, relative weights of gastrointestinal tract (GIT) organs, and nutrient metabolism. Four hundred chickens (40.0 g ± 0.05 g) were distributed in a completely randomized design with four treatments and five replicates. Growth parameters were measured at 7, 14, 21, and 42 days. Digestibility of crude protein and fat, carcass yield, relative weights of GIT organs, and biochemical blood profile were measured. The results were subject to an analysis of variance by Tukey's HSD test (p > 0.05). The inclusion of 5%, 10%, or 15% of glycerin did not influence performance or affect the crude protein and fat digestibility in broilers (p > 0.05) when compared to that of the basal (0%) diet. Similarly, the supplementation of glycerin levels showed no significant influence (p > 0.05) on the relative GIT organ weights, carcass yield, or nutrient metabolism. Thus, we concluded that glycerin may be included in the broilers' diets in rations of up to 15%.

ABSTRACT

This study reports the presence of high parasitic load by Myzobdella lugubris Leidy, 1851 in the swimming crab Callinectes bocourti A. Milne-Edwards, 1879 from Amazon mangrove. We sampled the swimming crabs using a baited trap, between January and June 2023, in Santa Maria River, located in the municipality of Curuçá, state of Pará, Brazil (geographical coordinates 0°40'3.705"S, 047°54'43.405"W). After sampling, each swimming crab was individually placed in plastic containers for the count of leeches per individual. In the laboratory, the specimens were sexed, measured (parasite and host) and fixed in 70% alcohol. For the leech species identification, macroscopic techniques were combined with light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). We examined 86 specimens of C. bocourti (75 males and 11 females) in a ratio of 1 M:0.14 F, all infested with leeches. In total, 186 leech specimens were collected, ranging from 1 to 21 leeches per host. Leeches oviposited the cocoons in greater quantities in ventral area of swimming crab carapace (32%), followed by dorsal area of carapace (29.09%), chelipeds (24.34%) and ambulatory legs (14.57%). The presence of M. lugubris is a risk to the health of the host, once it may transmit a range of diseases to aquatic organisms, and subsequently risk to human health.

ABSTRACT

Triatomines are hematophagous insects of epidemiological importance as they are vectors of Chagas disease. The first report of Rhodnius stali Lent, Jurberg & Galvão, 1993 in Rondônia, Brazil, is described. The insects were captured on palm trees of the genus Oenocarpus sp. Two adult male specimens of R. stali were identified and were found to be infected with Trypanosoma cruzi and Trypanosoma rangeli. The confirmation of this Rhodnius species in Rondônia increases the number of triatomines from nine to ten species in this state.

Introduction. Oral lymphatic malformations are uncommon lesions. This study assessed the clinicopathological and sociodemographic features of oral lymphatic malformations in a Brazilian oral pathology service. Methods. Between 2000 and 2021, all oral lymphatic malformations diagnosed in a single oral pathology service were selected for the study. Clinical data, such as age, sex, site of the lesion, clinical presentation, diagnosis clinical, and the type of biopsy were recorded from the patient's clinical charts. Results. From 7554 oral lesions, 17 (0.22%) were oral lymphatic malformations. This lesion similarly affected both sexes, and the mean age of the patients was 16.5 years. The tongue was the most common site (n = 13; 76%). The mean size of the lesions was 17 mm. Oral lymphatic malformations were asymptomatic for 29% of the patients. Clinically, most lesions appeared as a reddish, sessile nodule, with a pebbly surface. In addition, the clinical and histopathological diagnoses agreed for most lesions (n = 11; 64%). The type of biopsy performed was excisional in 41% of lesions. Conclusions. In summary, oral lymphatic malformations present a low prevalence among the oral lesions diagnosed in an oral pathology service. Moreover, they affect equally both sexes, especially young patients, and usually appear as an asymptomatic or symptomatic nodular swelling on the tongue.

ABSTRACT

The demand for materials with improved properties and less negative impact on the environment is growing. Artificial stones are examples of these materials produced with up to 90% of particulate material joined by a binder. This article evaluates the physical and mechanical properties of two artificial stones produced with processing steel residue (blast furnace dust waste) and quartz powder. Two binders were used: pure epoxy resin, denoted as ASPB100, or a mixture of 70 wt% epoxy resin with 30 wt% cashew nut shell oil, denoted as ASPB7030. The process took place under vibration, compression (3 MPa/20 min and 90 °C) and vacuum (80 Pa). ASPB100 showed water absorption of 0.07%, while for ASPB7030, it was 0.54%. They were classified as having high mechanical strength associated with bending stress values equal to 32 and 25 MPa, respectively. Stain resistance indicated that both artificial stones had their stains removed with the tested cleaning agents. In this way, the novel artificial stones produced are sustainable alternatives for the application of blast furnace waste and cashew nut shell oil, reducing their negative impacts on the environment.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to redescribe two species of Ozolaimus, parasites of free-living green iguanas native to Marajó Island. The gastrointestinal system of four iguana specimens was evaluated for the presence of helminths. Altogether, 12,028 nematodes were found, with a prevalence of 100%, an infection range of 780 to 7,736 nematodes, an infection intensity of 3.007, and a mean abundance of 3,007. Light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy were used to determine the species of nematodes found. The cecum was the site of infection that had the highest parasitic load. Morphologically, the nematodes were compatible with the genus Ozolaimus Dujardin, 1844, with the species Ozolaimus megatyphlon (Rudolphi, 1819) Dujardin, 1845, and Ozolaimus cirratus Linstow, 1906. Scanning electron microscopy showed the presence of small structures (serrated in Ozolaimus cirratus and rounded in Ozolaimus megatyphlon) located below the esophageal leaves. We also evidenced the phasmids in both species; this is the first record of these structures in nematodes of the genus Ozolaimus. In addition, this work expands the records on the geographic distribution of these parasites.

ABSTRACT

Capillaria Zeder, 1800, parasitizes the organs and tissues of several hosts, including the domestic duck Cairina moschata (Linnaeus). This article describes a new species of Capillaria in domestic ducks identified based on morphological studies and molecular analyses of the ribosomal RNA gene. Thirty-eight specimens of C. moschata from the municipality of Soure, Marajó Island, Pará, Brazil. The organs of the birds' digestive tract were analyzed under a stereomicroscope to confirm the parasitic infection, after which the collected nematodes were identified by light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and molecular analysis. Capillariids parasitized the intestine and cecum of the examined birds. These parasites had three bacillary bands and a pair of elongated precloacal papillae on the tail. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the new species formed a sister clade with Capillaria spinulosa (Linstow, 1890), as described in Indonesia and Japan. Based on morphological distinctions and molecular data, Capillaria cairina n. sp. can be considered a new parasite species of C. moschata in the Brazilian Amazon.

ABSTRACT

Caiman crocodilus is among the most abundant and widely distributed predators in the Neotropical region. These animals consume prey such as crustaceans, birds, small mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and fish, which can carry infective larval forms of nematodes. Brevimulticaecum has few studies on its morphology available, lacking detailed images. Therefore, the aim of this study was to redescribe Brevimulticaecum baylisi, stomach parasite of Caiman crocodilus, from subsistence hunting in the Yavari-Mirin River, Peruvian Amazon, using light and scanning electron microscopy. Four caimans were analyzed, and, macroscopically, all had ulcerative lesions in the stomach caused by this parasite. Histopathology showed an inflammatory infiltrate with a predominance of lymphocytes. Morphological characteristics of nematodes include the presence of three diamond-shaped lips wider than they are long, interlabia pyramidal, excretory pore located above the nerve ring, present intestinal cecum, ventriculus with five ventricular appendages, and long, winged spicules. These morphological characters, added to the number and distribution of the pre- and postcloacal papillae of the male specimens, allowed the identification of these parasites as B. baylisi. Scanning electron microscopy of these nematodes showed the presence of a dentigerous ridge on the inner surface of the lips in both sexes, while in males, the presence of a horseshoe-shaped median papilla was observed on the upper lip of the cloaca. Our research, therefore, adds these characteristics to the original description of B. baylisi, in addition to expanding the biogeographical distribution of this parasite.

ABSTRACT

The genus Baruscapillaria Moravec, 1982 has six valid species recorded in birds Phalacrocoracidae, namely Baruscapillaria appendiculata Freitas, 1933, B. spiculata Freitas, 1933, B. carbonis (Dubinin & Dubinina, 1940), B. jaenschi (Johnston & Mawson, 1945), B. phalacrocoraxi (Borgarenko, 1975) and B. rudolphii Moravec, Scholz and Nasincová, 1994. Helminthological tests carried out on cormorants of the species Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Gmelin), a migratory bird that occurs in the northeast of the State of Pará, Brazil, demonstrate B. appendiculata parasitizing the cloaca of these birds, through light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and molecular biology. These studies allowed a redescription of males and females of this nematode in these hosts and in this geographical area through integrative taxonomy. The occurrence of lesions in the cloaca caused by this nematode parasite was registered using histological analysis. This is a new geographic report for this nematode.

ABSTRACT

For the first time in Brazil, Contracaecum australe is recorded parasitizing Phalacrocorax brasilianus (Aves, Suliformes, Phalacrocoracidae) from the Marine Extractive Reserve of Soure on Marajó Island, Brazilian Amazon. Its morphology revealed a body with a transversally striated cuticle, smooth or slightly cleft interlabia, lips with auricles, labial papillae, and conspicuous amphids. In males, the presence of the median papilla on the upper lip of the cloaca and spicules that reach almost half of the body of the parasite. These morphological characters, added to the number and distribution of the pre- and postcloacal papillae of the male specimens, and supported by the molecular phylogeny from the analysis of the ITS-1, 5.8S and ITS-2 genes, allowed the identification of these parasites.

ABSTRACT

Background: To evaluate the prevalence and clinicopathological features of a large series of gingival neoplasms in Brazil. Material and methods: All gingival benign and malignant neoplasms were retrieved from the records of six Oral Pathology Services in Brazil, during a 41-year period. Clinical and demographic data, clinical diagnosis, and histopathological data were collected from the patients' clinical charts. For statistical analysis, the chi-square, median test of independent samples and the U Mann-Whitney tests were used, considering a significance of 5%. Results: From 100,026 oral lesions, 888 (0.9%) were gingival neoplasms. There were 496 (55.9%) males, with a mean age of 54.2 years. Most cases (70.3%) were malignant neoplasms. Nodules (46.2%) and ulcers (38.9%) were the most common clinical appearance for benign and malignant neoplasms, respectively. Squamous cell carcinoma (55.6%) was the most common gingival neoplasm, followed by squamous cell papilloma (19.6%). In 69 (11.1%) malignant neoplasms, the lesions were clinically considered to be inflammatory or of infectious origin. Malignant neoplasms were more common in older men, appeared with larger size, and with a time of complaint shorter than benign neoplasms (p<0.001). Conclusions: Benign and malignant tumors may appear as nodules in gingival tissue. In addition, malignant neoplasms, especially squamous cell carcinoma, should be considered in the differential diagnosis of persistent single gingival ulcers. (AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Three years after the first confirmed COVID-19 case in Brazil, the outcomes of Federal government omissions in managing the crisis and anti-science stance heading into the pandemic have become even more evident. With over 36 million confirmed cases and nearly 700 000 deaths up to January 2023, the country is one of the hardest-hit places in the world. The lack of mass-testing programs was a critical broken pillar responsible for the quick and uncontrolled SARS-CoV-2 spread throughout the Brazilian population. Faced with this situation, we aimed to perform the routine SARS-CoV-2 screening through RT-qPCR of oral biopsies samples to aid in the asymptomatic epidemiological surveillance during the principal outbreak periods. METHODS: We analyzed 649 formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded oral tissue samples from five important oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratories from the north, northeast, and southeast geographic regions of Brazil. We also sequenced the whole viral genome of positive cases to investigate SARS-CoV-2 variants. RESULTS: The virus was detected in 9/649 analyzed samples, of which three harbored the Variant of Concern Alpha (B.1.1.7). CONCLUSION: Although our approach did not value aiding asymptomatic epidemiological surveillance, we could successfully identify a using FFPE tissue samples. Therefore, we suggest using FFPE tissue samples from patients who have confirmed diagnosis of SARS-CoV-2 infection for phylogenetic reconstruction and contraindicate the routine laboratory screening of these samples as a tool for asymptomatic epidemiological surveillance.

This study evaluated dental students' perceptions and adherence to an interactive web-based response system in the teaching of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology. Between 2018 and 2019, students from a single Brazilian dental school used the Poll Everywhere® app to answer questions on subjects taught during an Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology course. At the end of the academic semester, the students completed a questionnaire containing 10 questions regarding the app's use. The study included 123 students. Regarding the devices used to answer the questions on the app, 117 (95.1%) students used a smartphone and 3 (2.4%) used a laptop. Almost all students (121; 98.4%) agreed that this interactive web-based response system provided the teacher with a better overview of students' understanding and improved their self-assessment of the acquired knowledge of the subjects. Most students (118; 95.9%) preferred classes using this technology and 122 (99.2%) stated that using the app made them feel more engaged in classes. In addition, all students agreed that the app improved student-teacher interactions. Most students (119; 96.7%) considered the digital interactive method more attractive than the conventional teaching approach, and 99 (80.5%) did not have any negative comments regarding the app. In conclusion, the Poll Everywhere® app provides a more dynamic and attractive educational environment for Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology teaching.

Objetivo: Conhecer o perfil demográfico e comportamento sexual e conhecimento clínico no que se refere à prevenção de IST dos estudantes do 4º ao 10º período do Curso de Odontologia de uma universidade brasileira. Métodos: Tratou-se de um estudo transversal, realizado através da aplicação de um questionário com perguntas sobre aspectos sociais, demográficos, econômicos e relativos às formas de transmissão e expressão clínica de IST. Os dados foram analisados descritivamente (médias, medianas, desvio padrão), assim como também foi realizada a análise estatística inferencial, com nível de significância de 5%. O programa utilizado para executar as inferências foi o SPSS, versão 23. Resultados: Constatou-se, preliminarmente, predominância de brancos entre os entrevistados, baixo uso de preservativos nas relações sexuais, altos índices de realização de teste para detecção de HIV e falhas no conhecimento em identificar IST passíveis de transmissão durante o atendimento odontológico. Conclusão: Há falhas no aprendizado do público-alvo da pesquisa, refletindo em desconhecimento sobre a prevenção, transmissão, sinais e sintomas de IST que envolvam a boca e seus anexos.


Aim:To know the demographic profile, sexual behavior, and clinical knowledge regarding STI prevention of students from the 4th to 10th period of the Dentistry Course at a Brazilian university. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study, carried out through the application of a questionnaire with questions about social, demographic, economic aspects and related to the transmission and clinical expression of STIs. Data were analyzed descriptively (means, medians, standard deviation), as well as inferential statistical analysis, with a significance level of 5%. The program used to perform the inferences was SPSS, version 23. Results: This study primarily found a predominance of whites among the interviewees, a low use of condoms in sexual relations, high rates of testing for HIV detection, and flaws in students' knowledge in identifying STIs capable of transmission during dental care. Conclusion: There are gaps in learning within the research target audience, reflecting a lack of knowledge about the prevention, transmission, signs, and symptoms of STIs involving the mouth and its attachments.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the awareness of patients using bisphosphonates (BP) regarding their risks and benefits. Sixty-five patients using BP were included. Each participant completed a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 13 questions, including sociodemographic and general information on BP. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and a binomial test was used to assess patient knowledge about BP, considering a 5% significance level. Fifty-nine (90.2%) patients were unaware or had never heard of BP drugs and only 3 (4.6%) knew their indications. Only 6 patients (9.2%) said they knew about the oral complications caused by BP. Sixty-three patients (96.9%) said they were not referred to the dentist before starting BP treatment. Patients using BP do not have satisfactory knowledge regarding the risks and benefits of BP. Physicians and dentists must be prepared to inform and counsel BP users about their adverse effects and possible risk factors. Our results emphasize the importance of public policies, whether individual or collective, to be taken to increase knowledge about BP to avoid medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The subfamily Triatominae, which comprises 157 species, carries the protozoan Trypanosoma cruzi, the etiological agent of Chagas disease. This short communication reports for the first time the occurrence of Rhodnius montenegrensis in Bolivia. METHODS: Active searches were carried out on palm trees of the genus Oenocarpus in Beni district, Bolivia. RESULTS: Fifteen R. montenegrensis specimens were collected from a rural area of the Beni district, Bolivia, and tested positive for T. cruzi. CONCLUSIONS: This new report expands the geographic distribution of the species in Latin America. Due to their ability to transmit trypanosomatids, the species deserves the attention of vector control programs.

ABSTRACT

Introdução: tecnologias digitais como as gamificações vem modernizando e inovando o processo de aprendizagem. Objetivo:agrupar, por meio de uma revisão de literatura, evidências científicas acerca da aplicabilidade do Kahoot© como estratégia de aprendizagem na disciplina de Ciências Morfofuncionais. Metodologia: os termos "anatomy", "histology", "embryology", "gamification", "kahoot", "Kahoot!", foram empregados nas bases de dados PubMed, Scopus, Bireme, Web of Science, Science Direct e Eric, utilizando operadores booleanos OR/AND. Foram estabelecidos como critérios de inclusão, artigos com delineamento do tipo experimental, observacional e revisões sistemáticas que descreveram a utilização do Kahoot© como ferramenta de ensino na disciplina de morfologia humana, publicados nos idiomas inglês, espanhol e português, no período de 2013 a 2021. Foram excluídos, artigos que utilizaram o Kahoot© em outras áreas do conhecimento e em outros componentes curriculares. Resultados: a amostra foi constituída por 337 artigos que, após leitura do título e resumo, foram submetidos aos critérios de inclusão e exclusão. Destes, 11 artigos foram elegíveis para o estudo. Discussão: o Kahoot© motiva o estudante, criando uma atmosfera divertida, favorecendo o trabalho colaborativo e o engajamento dos alunos em seu processo de aprendizagem. Elementos associados à gamificação foram vistos como responsáveis pela descontração e como agentes estressores. Conclusão: o Kahoot© possibilita um aprender divertido e dinâmico, porém, pesquisas que utilizem grupo controle e experimental são relevantes para verificar a efetividade do Kahoot© no ensino de morfologia a curto, médio ou longo prazo, potencializando os benefícios do seu uso em sala de aula.


Introduction:digital technologies such as gamifications have been modernizing and innovating the learning process. Objective: to group, through a literature review, scientific evidence about the applicability of Kahoot© as a learning strategy in the discipline of Morphofunctional Sciences. Methodology: the terms "anatomy", "histology", "embryology", "gamification", "kahoot", "Kahoot!" were employed in the PubMed, Scopus, Bireme, Web of Science, Science Direct and Eric databases, using Boolean OR/AND operators. Inclusion criteria articles with an experimental, observational design and systematic reviews were established that described the use of Kahoot© as a teaching tool in the discipline of human morphology, published in English, Spanish and Portuguese, from 2013 to 2021. Articles that used Kahoot© in other areas of knowlwdge and other curricular components were excluded. Results: the sample consisted of 337 articles that, after reading the title and abstract, were found in the searched databases. After reading the title and abstract, the articles are subject to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Of these, 11 articles were eligible for the study. Discussion: the Kahoot© motivates the student, creating a fun atmosphere, favoring collaborative work and studente engagement in their learning process. Elements associated with gamification were seen as responsible for the relaxed and stressing agents. Conclusion: Kahoot© a fun and dynamic learning, however, research using control and experimental group is relevant to verify the effectiveness of Kahoot© in the teaching of morphology in the short, medium, or long term, enhancing the benefits of its use in the classroom use

ABSTRACT

The puffer fish Colomesus psittacus, is not commercialized on Marajó Island. They are captured as bycacth and discarded dead in the environment in artisanal fisheries that occur in the estuaries of northern Brazil. In this sense, the objective was to identify the parasites present in the gills and to evaluate the histopathological alterations caused by these nematodes of the genus Huffmanela. Fifty-five fish were analyzed, and thirty-five specimens showed the parasite in the gills. Morphological characteristics suggest that it is a new species of the genus Huffmanela, and the histopathological exams showed an edematous inflammation in the secondary lamella and the presence of eggs of this nematode, which is the first record of this parasite in C. psittacus in Brazil.

ABSTRACT

Leishmaniasis comprises a collection of clinical manifestations associated with the infection of obligate intracellular protozoans, Leishmania. The life cycle of Leishmania parasites consists of two alternating life stages (amastigotes and promastigotes), during which parasites reside within either arthropod vectors or vertebrate hosts, respectively. Notably, the complex interactions between Leishmania parasites and several cells of the immune system largely influence the outcome of infection. Importantly, although macrophages are known to be the main host niche for Leishmania replication, parasites are also phagocytosed by other innate immune cells, such as neutrophils and dendritic cells (DCs). DCs play a major role in bridging the innate and adaptive branches of immunity and thus orchestrate immune responses against a wide range of pathogens. The mechanisms by which Leishmania and DCs interact remain unclear and involve aspects of pathogen capture, the dynamics of DC maturation and activation, DC migration to draining lymph node (dLNs), and antigen presentation to T cells. Although a large body of studies support the notion that DCs play a dual role in modulating immune responses against Leishmania, the participation of these cells in susceptibility or resistance to Leishmania remains poorly understood. After infection, DCs undergo a maturation process associated with the upregulation of surface major histocompatibility complex (MHC) II, in addition to costimulatory molecules (namely, CD40, CD80, and CD86). Understanding the role of DCs in infection outcome is crucial to developing therapeutic and prophylactic strategies to modulate the immune response against Leishmania. This paper describes a method for the characterization of Leishmania-DC interaction. This detailed protocol provides guidance throughout the steps of DC differentiation, the characterization of cell surface molecules, and infection protocols, allowing scientists to investigate DC response to Leishmania infection and gain insight into the roles played by these cells in the course of infection.
