ABSTRACT

The spatial variability of physical properties, such as bulk density, penetration resistance and gravimetric moisture, obtained by applying geostatistics in precision agriculture, can effectively indicate the physical behavior of agricultural soils in longitudinal profiles. In this way, the spatial dependence of physical properties in streets of coffee plantations with different lengths was evaluated in the southern Minas Gerais, Brazil. For this purpose, five longitudinal profiles were measured in streets, each one with depths ranging from 0 to 0.60 m, in six layers of 0.10 m, being the database composed of 432 property, 144 by property, submitted to the ordinary kriging geostatistical method in order to obtain spatial variability maps using the R software. They were evaluated by the lower mean cross-validation error of theoretical models fitted by ordinary least squares (OLS), being detected in higher superficial layers, from 0 to 0.30 m, lower bulk density and lower penetration resistance, with variable gravimetric moisture in the length direction of some streets of coffee plantations, being that these properties presented different structures of spatial dependence for each street.

BACKGROUND: The disorder of reflex and motor function in patients affected by stroke causes negative impact on the performance of movement patterns and affects the functional activities. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the immediate effects of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) and cryotherapy interventions on the spinal reflex excitability and in the voluntary electromyography (EMG) activity in people with chronic stroke. METHOD: Randomized crossover trial. The maximum H-reflex (Hmax), the H-reflex latency and the maximum motor response (Mmax) of the soleus muscle and also the EMG of the tibialis muscle where evaluated before and after the application of TENS, cryotherapy and control conditions. RESULTS: The Hmax/Mmax ratio was statistically significant higher (p=0.0245) and the H-reflex latency was statistically significant lower (p=0.0375) in the soleus muscle of the affected limb. The EMG amplitude of the tibialis anterior was reduced in the compromised limb (p<0.0001). After the use of the TENS, a reduction in the Hmax/Mmax ratio (p=0.0006) was observed leading to lower reflex excitability. However, after the cryotherapy intervention an increase of the Hmax/Mmax ratio was observed, which was accompanied by an increase in the H-reflex latency (p=0.0001). The EMG amplitude has not changed by any of the interventions. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that TENS may be a choice for immediate reduction of reflex excitability, whereas cryotherapy intervention may increase reflex excitability in hemiparetic subjects. However, none of the changes mediated by either intervention were able to modify the electrical activity in the antagonist muscle of the spastic muscle.


CONTEXTUALIZAÇÃO: O distúrbio da função motora e reflexa em pacientes acometidos por acidente vascular encefálico (AVE) causa impactos negativos na realização de padrões motores, comprometendo as atividades funcionais. OBJETIVOS: Investigar os efeitos imediatos da estimulação elétrica nervosa transcutânea (TENS) e da crioterapia na excitabilidade reflexa e na atividade voluntária de sujeitos vítimas de AVE. MÉTODO: Estudo Crossover. O reflexo H máximo (Hmáx), a latência do reflexo H e a resposta motora máxima (Mmáx) do músculo solear e a eletromiografia (EMG) do músculo tibial anterior foram avaliados antes e após a aplicação de TENS, crioterapia e em condições de controle. RESULTADOS: A razão Hmáx/Mmáx estava significativamente aumentada (p=0,0245) e a latência do reflexo H significativamente diminuída (p=0,0375) no músculo solear do membro afetado. A amplitude do sinal EMG do músculo estava significativamente reduzida no membro comprometido (p<0,0001). Depois da TENS, houve uma diminuição da razão Hmáx/Mmáx (p=0,0006). Porém, após a aplicação do gelo, houve um aumento da razão Hmáx/Mmáx, acompanhado por um aumento da latência do reflexo H (p=0,0001). A amplitude do sinal EMG não foi alterada por nenhuma das intervenções. CONCLUSÕES: Nossos achados indicam que a TENS pode ser uma escolha para redução imediata da excitabilidade reflexa, enquanto a crioterapia pode aumentar a excitabilidade reflexa de sujeitos hemiparéticos. No entanto, nenhuma das alterações mediadas por qualquer um dos tratamentos foi capaz de alterar a atividade elétrica do músculo antagonista ao espástico.

ABSTRACT

Magnetic resonance is used to investigate biodistribution aspects of dextran-coated magnetite nanoparticles (9.4 nm core diameter) in both liver and spleen from 5 minutes up to 6 months after intravenous administration of a magnetic fluid sample in female Swiss mice. Using magnetic resonance data important parameters such as the absorption half-life (t 1/2 = 12 +/- 2 min in the liver and t 1/2 = 11 +/- 2 min in the spleen), the peak time (1.7 +/- 0.2 h in the liver and 1.9 +/- 0.2 h in the spleen), and the disposition half-life of the dextran-coated magnetite nanoparticles in mice organs (t 1/2 = 70 +/- 10 h in the liver and t 1/2 = 32 +/- 7 h in the spleen) were assessed. In addition, light and electron microscopy showed several aspects that may be related to the iron metabolism. Microscopic analysis also revealed that although magnetite nanoparticles or iron released from them are retained in the organism for a long period of time, no morphologic alteration is induced by the intravenous administration of the magnetic fluid sample, evidencing its biocompatibility. The used tests may represent an adequate methodology for nanotoxicology evaluation.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The worldwide fall in the rate of detection of new cases of leprosy has been partly attributed to the introduction of multidrug therapy and other improvements in control programs. However, the rate of detection of new cases has not decreased in Brazil. METHODS: An analysis was made of the temporal distribution of 18,872 newly reported leprosy cases in Bahia, Brazil, from 1974 to 1997. Population denominators for the annual detection rate were obtained from population estimates based on the national census. Trends were presented by sex, date of birth, date of diagnosis, date of release, clinical form and by residence in areas which had notified cases in the 5 years prior to the rise in detection rate. RESULTS: There was a marked increase in the new case detection rate (NCDR) in the State of Bahia, from 0.19 to 1.43 cases per 10,000 inhabitants during the study period, an increment of nearly 7% to 8% per year. This increase was also observed in people aged 14 years and younger. During this period tuberculoid and indeterminate forms have become predominant among women and younger people. The average age of male cases has shifted toward younger ages. CONCLUSIONS: We interpret this pattern to mean that the increase in NCDR reflects a real increase in incidence of leprosy, whether or not accompanied by improved detection.
