ABSTRACT

Nanocelluloses have gained significant attention in recent years due to their singular properties (good biocompatibility, high optical transparency and mechanical strength, large specific surface area, and good film-forming ability) and wide-ranging applications (paper, food packaging, textiles, electronics, and biomedical). This article is a comprehensive review of the applications of nanocelluloses (cellulose nanocrystals, cellulose nanofibrils, and bacterial nanocellulose) in the conservation and restoration of historical paper documents, including their preparation methods and main properties. The novelty lies in the information collected about nanocelluloses as renewable, environmentally friendly, and sustainable materials in the field of cultural heritage preservation as an alternative to conventional methods. Several studies have demonstrated that nanocelluloses, with or without other particles, may impart to the paper documents excellent optical and mechanical properties, very good stability against temperature and humidity aging, higher antibacterial and antifungal activity, high protection from UV light, and may be applied without requiring additional adhesive.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This prospective study aimed to provide a comprehensive analysis of the methylation status of two pivotal genes, CDKN2A/p16INK4A (cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitor 2A) and RB1 (retinoblastoma transcriptional corepressor 1), in breast cancer patients. METHODS: Samples were obtained from 15 women diagnosed with breast cancer and who underwent a total mastectomy. DNA was extracted from the tumor, non-tumor tissue, and peripheral blood (circulating cell-free DNA). The methylation pattern of cell-free DNA extracted from blood collected on the day of mastectomy was compared with the methylation pattern of cell-free DNA from blood collected 1 year post-surgery. The methylation analysis was carried out by sodium bisulfite conversion and polymerase chain reaction, followed by electrophoresis. RESULTS: Methylation of CDKN2A/p16INK4A was identified in 13 tumor samples and 12 non-tumor tissue samples. Two patients exhibited CDKN2A/p16INK4A methylation in the cell-free DNA of the first blood collection, while another showed methylation only in the cell-free DNA of the subsequent blood collection. Regarding RB1, 11 tumors and 8 non-tumor tissue samples presented methylation of the gene. CONCLUSION: This study presents a novel approach for monitoring breast cancer patients through the analysis of cell-free DNA methylation. This analysis can detect changes in methylation patterns before any visible sign of cancer appears in breast tissue and could help predict the recurrence of malignant breast tumors.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) enzyme, encoded by the hTERT gene, synthesizes protective telomeric sequences on chromosomes and plays a fundamental role in cancer formation. Methylation of the hTERT gene has an upregulatory effect, increasing hTERT enzyme synthesis and allowing continuous tumor cell division. OBJECTIVE: In a group of patients with breast cancer, we aimed to analyze the methylation status of hTERT in the tumor, surrounding tissue, and circulating free deoxyribonucleic acid (cfDNA) of blood collected on the day of mastectomy and then approximately one year later. DESIGN AND SETTING: A prospective study was conducted at a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. METHODS: Samples were collected from 15 women with breast cancer on the day of mastectomy and approximately one year postoperatively. cfDNA was analyzed by sodium bisulfite conversion, followed by polymerase chain reaction, electrophoresis, and silver nitrate staining. RESULTS: Methylation of hTERT was detected in the tumors and surrounding tissues of all 15 patients. Five patients displayed hTERT methylation in the cfDNA from the blood of the first collection. Of the ten patients who returned for the second collection, three showed methylation. Two patients with methylation in the first collection did not display methylation in the second collection. One patient with no methylation in the first collection displayed methylation in the second collection, and one patient had a diminished level of methylation in the second collection. CONCLUSION: Only one-third of patients displayed methylation in their cfDNA, which may be related to the success of chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

This in vitro study aimed to verify the influence of chlorhexidine (CHX) (gel and solution) in association with different activation protocols on disinfection of root canals contaminated with Enterococcus faecalis. In total, 120 lower premolar roots were selected, contaminated and divided into 12 groups according to irrigation technique and substance. Samples were collected before and after each irrigation technique and analysed for colony-forming units (CFU). Three dentin discs were obtained for quantification of viable intratubular cells by using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). CFU results showed that sonic and ultrasonic were more effective than conventional irrigation. Ultrasonic activation was more effective than sonic for CHX gel (p < 0.05). CLSM showed that either activation was better than conventional in all groups and root canal thirds (p < 0.05). It was concluded that ultrasonic/sonic activation was more effective than conventional techniques and CHX enhanced intratubular dentin decontamination across all irrigation methods.

ABSTRACT

Following a fuel leakage inside a Portuguese maritime port, we conducted parallel 30-day experiments using contaminated seawater and fuel, sampled five days after the incident. This study aimed to (i)survey the native microbial community response to the spilled fuel and (ii)evaluate the efficacy of bioremediation, both biostimulation and bioaugmentation with a lyophilized bacterial consortium (Rhodococcus erythropolis, Pseudomonas sp.), in accelerating hydrocarbon degradation. Metabarcoding analysis revealed a shift in microbial communities, with increased abundance of hydrocarbon-degraders (e.g. Alcanivorax, Thalassospira). Ninety-five hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria were isolated, including key groups from the enriched communities. The lyophilized bacteria added in bioaugmentation, enhanced the abundance of hydrocarbon-degraders over time and were recovered throughout time. Bioremediation treatments favoured biodegradation, achieving over 60 % removal of total petroleum hydrocarbons after 15 days, contrasting with natural attenuation where almost no TPH was removed. This work highlights the potential of bioremediation technologies to accelerate hydrocarbon-degrading activity, for oil spills inside ports.

ABSTRACT

This study tested the usability of a home-based self-administration transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) device designed specifically for women's health needs. This is a single center triple blinded clinical usability study for a new wireless, Bluetooth-controlled wearable tDCS device for women's health. The study aims to evaluate the usability and effective blinding of a home-based tDCS system. A total of forty-nine women of reproductive age were randomly allocated (1:1) to receive one session of active tDCS (n = 24) or sham tDCS (n = 25) over the motor and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. Each participant self-administered one 20-minute session without supervision following guidance on a software application alone. The System Usability Scale (SUS) and the Patient Global Impression of Change (PGIC) were used to evaluate the usability of the system. Regardless of sham or active conditions, all users found the system easy to use without the support of researchers. Usability scores were considered to be "excellent" in both groups and no significant difference was found between sham and active groups showing effective blinding of the device (Active group: 93.7 (83.1-97.5); Sham group 90 (86.2-95) p = 0.79) and PGIC (Active group: 2 (1-2.75); Sham group 2 (1-2) p = 0.99) using an unpaired t-test or non-parametric statistical tests accordingly. The new Bluetooth-controlled wearable tDCS device is easy, safe to use and completely controlled by a smartphone app. This device is focused on women's health and will be tested as an alternative treatment for chronic pelvic pain and mood disturbance associated with menstrual cycles in further research.

ABSTRACT

Testosterone is integral to men's sexual and overall health, but there is a gradual decline in the ageing male. The topical administration of testosterone is a valuable option as a supplement (replacement) therapy to alleviate hypogonadal symptoms. The clinical efficacy of a compounded testosterone 5% topical gel was assessed retrospectively in a male patient in his seventies by evaluating the laboratory testing of the serum total testosterone and the results of a validated androgen deficiency questionnaire. After treatment, the patient's hypogonadal symptoms improved and the serum total testosterone level achieved was considered clinically optimal. The skin permeation of the testosterone topical gel (biological testing) was evaluated in vitro using the Franz finite dose model and human cadaver skin, and it is shown that testosterone can penetrate into and through ex vivo human skin. Testosterone therapy is often prescribed for extended periods, and consequently, it is crucial to determine the beyond-use date of the compounded formulations. The analytical testing involved a valid, stability-indicating assay method for compounded testosterone 0.5% and 20% topical gels. This multidisciplinary study shows evidence supporting topically applied testosterone's clinical efficacy and the compounded formulations' extended stability. Personalized, topical testosterone therapy is a promising alternative in current therapeutics for hypogonadal patients.

Objetivo: Avaliar os fatores preditores para ocorrência de lesão por pressão em pacientes oncológicos em cuidados paliativos. Métodos: Estudo epidemiológico observacional, analítico, com delineamento transversal e abordagem quantitativa. A coleta de dados foi realizada com 105 participantes, no período de maio a outubro de 2019, em uma Clínica de Cuidados Paliativos Oncológicos de um Centro de Alta Complexidade em Oncologia. Os foram inseridos no software Biostat 5.0, em que foi realizada primeiramente a análise de regressão logística univariada, e posteriormente foram selecionadas as variáveis para a regressão logística múltipla e assim definiram-se os fatores preditivos para lesão por pressão. Resultados: A prevalência identificada foi de 19,04% para lesão por pressão. A maioria da amostra eram mulheres (60%), com idade menor que 70 anos (70%). Dois terços apresentavam risco muito alto (15%), para lesão por pressão segundo a Escala de Braden, e possuíam como diagnóstico primário câncer de próstata (20%), seguido de colo uterino (15%). Conclusão: A presença de lesão medular e o uso de fralda descartável demonstrou forte correlação com o desenvolvimento de lesão por pressão, sendo estes os fatores preditivos identificados neste estudo. Conhecer o perfil desses pacientes auxilia na elaboração e sistematização das condutas de enfermagem, visando melhor qualidade e segurança no cuidado. (AU)


Objective: To evaluate the predictive factors for the occurrence of pressure injuries in cancer patients undergoing palliative care. Methods: Observational, analytical, cross-sectional epidemiological study with a quantitative approach. Data collection was carried out with 105 participants, from May to October 2019, in an Oncology Palliative Care Clinic of a High Complexity Oncology Center. The data were entered into the Biostat 5.0 software, in which the univariate logistic regression analysis was first performed, and then the variables for the multiple logistic regression were selected, thus defining the predictive factors for pressure injury. Results: The identified prevalence was 19.04% for pressure injuries. Most of the sample were women (60%), aged under 70 years (70%). Two-thirds were at very high risk (15%) for pressure injury according to the Braden Scale, and had prostate cancer as a primary diagnosis (20%), followed by cervix (15%). Conclusion: The presence of spinal cord injury and the use of a disposable diaper showed a strong correlation with the development of pressure injury, which are the predictive factors identified in this study. Knowing the profile of these patients helps in the elaboration and systematization of nursing procedures, aiming at better quality and safety in care. (AU)

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Lower lip squamous cell carcinomas (LLSCCs) exhibit lower levels of aggressiveness, low relations with metastases and better prognosis when compared with intraoral squamous cell carcinomas. Differently from the oral tongue squamous cell carcinomas (OTSCCs) have a high tendency towards local invasion and lymph nodal dissemination. Our aim was to evaluate tumor thickness in cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma and correlate it with histological grade of malignancy and GATA3 immunoreactivity. METHODS: Sixty specimens (30 LLSCCs and 30 OTSCCs) were scanned and digitized for the subsequent measurement of tumor thickness, histopathological examination, and quantitative analysis of GATA3 in the parenchyma and stroma of the tumors. RESULTS: Tumor thickness was lower in LLSCC compared to OTSCCs. Immunohistochemical analysis of GATA3 in parenchyma, stroma and both compartments showed higher immunoreactivity in LLSCCs compared to OTSCCs. We observed a negative correlation between tumor thickness and GATA3 expression in parenchyma, stroma, and both compartments. Our results revealed the presence of GATA3 in all cases both in the parenchyma and in the stroma. Higher expression was more related to LLSCCs, which are known to be less aggressive tumors than OTSCCs. CONCLUSIONS: A greater tumor thickness was found in OTSCCs, which was correlated with lower expression of GATA3, suggesting that this protein is involved in the inhibition of proliferative, migratory, and invasive capacity.

ABSTRACT

A novel strain, MA3_2.13T, was isolated from deep-sea sediment of Madeira Archipelago, Portugal, and characterized using a polyphasic approach. This strain produced dark brown soluble pigments, bronwish black substrate mycelia and an aerial mycelium with yellowish white spores, when grown on GYM 50SW agar. The main respiratory quinones were MK-10(H4), MK-10(H6) and MK-10(H8). Diphosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethanolamine, three unidentified phospholipids and two glycophospholipids were identified as the main phospholipids. The major cellular fatty acids were iso-C16 : 1, iso-C16 : 0, anteiso-C17 : 1 and anteiso-C17 : 0. Phylogenetic analyses based on 16S rRNA gene showed that strain MA3_2.13T is a member of the genus Streptomyces and was most closely related to Streptomyces triticirhizae NEAU-YY642T (NR_180032.1; 16S rRNA gene similarity 97.9 %), Streptomyces sedi YIM 65188T (NR_044582.1; 16S rRNA gene similarity 97.4 %), Streptomyces mimosae 3MP-10T (NR_170412.1; 16S rRNA gene similarity 97.3 %) and Streptomyces zhaozhouensis NEAU-LZS-5T (NR_133874.1; 16S rRNA gene similarity 97.0 %). Genome pairwise comparisons with closest related type strains retrieved values below the threshold for species delineation suggesting that strain MA3_2.13T represents a new branch within the genus Streptomyces. Based on these results, strain MA3_2.13T (=DSM 115980T=LMG 33094T) is proposed as the type strain of a novel species of the genus Streptomyces, for which the name Streptomyces profundus sp. nov. is proposed.

ABSTRACT

Research on microbial defluorination is largely centred on controlled experiments using axenic or well defined microbial inocula. These approaches serve a relevant purpose in the field, offering fundamental biochemical and mechanistic insights on the intricacies of biological defluorination. However, they fail to account for the effective contribution of environmental microbial communities in the recycling of fluoroorganic pollutants, a highly relevant perspective from an environmental risk assessment standpoint, while also missing an important outlook on how community-wide dynamics can leverage the breakdown of C─F bonds in these recalcitrant compounds. With that in mind, this chapter provides experimental and methodological insights on the study of microbial defluorination in wild environmental communities, using this critical catabolic step as the de facto endpoint to evolve, select and cultivate microorganisms with improved defluorination performances.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: People with severe and multiple disadvantage (SMD) who experience combinations of homelessness, substance misuse, violence, abuse, and poor mental health have high health needs and poor access to primary care. AIM: To improve access to general practice for people with SMD by facilitating collaborative service improvement meetings between healthcare staff, people with lived experience of SMD, and those who support them; participants were then interviewed about this work. DESIGN AND SETTING: The Bridging Gaps group is a collaboration between healthcare staff, researchers, women with lived experience of SMD, and a charity that supports them in a UK city. A project was co-produced by the Bridging Gaps group to improve access to general practice for people with SMD, which was further developed with three inner-city general practices. METHOD: Nine service improvement meetings were facilitated at three general practices, and six of these were formally observed. Nine practice staff and four women with lived experience of SMD were interviewed. Three women with lived experience of SMD and one staff member who supports them participated in a focus group. Data were analysed inductively and deductively using thematic analysis. RESULTS: By providing time and funding opportunities to motivated general practice staff and involving participants with lived experience of SMD, service changes were made in an effort to improve access for people with SMD. These included prioritising patients on an inclusion patient list with more flexible access, providing continuity for patients via a care coordinator and micro-team of clinicians, and developing an information-sharing document. The process and outcomes improved connections within and between general practices, support organisations, and people with SMD. CONCLUSION: The co-designed strategies described in this study could be adapted locally and evaluated in other areas. Investing in this focused way of working may improve accessibility to health care, health equity, and staff wellbeing.

ABSTRACT

Actinomycetota, associated with macroalgae, remains one of the least explored marine niches. The secondary metabolism of Actinomycetota, the primary microbial source of compounds relevant to biotechnology, continues to drive research into the distribution, dynamics, and metabolome of these microorganisms. In this study, we employed a combination of traditional cultivation and metagenomic analysis to investigate the diversity of Actinomycetota in two native macroalgae species from the Portuguese coast. We obtained and taxonomically identified a collection of 380 strains, which were distributed across 12 orders, 15 families, and 25 genera affiliated with the Actinomycetia class, with Streptomyces making up approximately 60% of the composition. Metagenomic results revealed the presence of Actinomycetota in both Chondrus crispus and Codium tomentosum datasets, with relative abundances of 11% and 2%, respectively. This approach identified 12 orders, 16 families, and 17 genera affiliated with Actinomycetota, with minimal overlap with the cultivation results. Acidimicrobiales emerged as the dominant actinobacterial order in both macroalgae, although no strain affiliated with this taxonomic group was successfully isolated. Our findings suggest that macroalgae represent a hotspot for Actinomycetota. The synergistic use of both culture-dependent and independent approaches proved beneficial, enabling the identification and recovery of not only abundant but also rare taxonomic members.

ABSTRACT

Bioprospecting actinobacterial secondary metabolism from untapped marine sources may lead to the discovery of biotechnologically-relevant compounds. While studying the diversity and bioactive potential of Actinomycetota associated with Codium tomentosum, a green seaweed collected in the northern Portuguese cost, strain CT-F61, identified as Streptomyces violaceoruber, was isolated. Its extracts displayed a strong anticancer activity on breast carcinoma T-47D and colorectal carcinoma HCT116 cells, being effective as well against a panel of human and fish pathogenic bacteria. Following a bioactivity-guided isolation pipeline, a new analogue of the red-pigmented family of the antibiotics prodigiosins, decylprodigiosin (1), was identified and chemically characterized. Despite this family of natural products being well-known for a long time, we report a new analogue and the first evidence for prodigiosins being produced by a seaweed-associated actinomycete.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the feeding characteristics and growth of children with prenatal exposure to Zika virus (ZIKV) from birth to 48 months. DESIGN: Using data from the prospective Microcephaly Epidemic Research Group Pediatric Cohort (MERG-PC), children without microcephaly born to mothers with evidence of ZIKV infection during pregnancy (ZIKV-exposed children without microcephaly) and children with Zika-related microcephaly were compared using repeated cross-sectional analyses within the following age strata: birth; 1 to 12; 13 to 24; 25 to 36; and 37 to 48 months. The groups were compared in relation to prematurity, birth weight, breastfeeding, alternative feeding routes, dysphagia and anthropometric profiles based on the World Health Organization Anthro z-scores (weight-length/height, weight-age, length/height-age and BMI-age). RESULTS: The first assessment included 248 children, 77 (31.05%) with microcephaly and 171 (68.95%) without microcephaly. The final assessment was performed on 86 children. Prematurity was 2.35 times higher and low birth weight was 3.49 times higher in children with microcephaly. The frequency of breastfeeding was high (> 80%) in both groups. On discharge from the maternity hospital, the frequency of children requiring alternative feeding route in both groups was less than 5%. After 12 months of age, children with microcephaly required alternative feeding route more often than children without microcephaly. In children with microcephaly, the z-score of all growth indicators was lower than in children without microcephaly. CONCLUSIONS: Children with Zika-related microcephaly were more frequently premature and low birth weight and remained with nutritional parameters, i.e., weight-for-age, weight-for-length/height and length/height-for-age below those of the children without microcephaly.

ABSTRACT

Humming is probably more effective than speech for improving mothers' cardiorespiratory function and infants' self-regulation. We intend to understand the effects of (1) maternal humming vs. speech on preterm infants' physiological parameters, (2) maternal humming vs. speech on mothers' physiological parameters, and (3) humming melodic contours and the process of the lengthening of the final note on preterm infants' physiological parameters. This study was designed as a single-group repeated measures study, using microanalytical methodology (ELAN software version 4.9.4), with a protocol (silent baseline/speech, humming/silence/humming, or speech/silence) applied to preterm dyads (N = 36). Audio and video observations were recorded. Infants' and mothers' heart rates (HR) and O2 saturations were observed once a minute. The proportion of O2 saturation relative to HR (Prop. O2 saturation/HR) was estimated for both partners during the protocol. We found that the infants' HR mean was significantly lower during humming (p = 0.028), while a significantly higher Prop. O2 saturation/HR ratio was recorded during humming for infants (p = 0.027) and mothers (p = 0.029). The duration of sinusoidal contours, together with the lengthening of the final note, predicts infants' Prop. O2 saturation/HR ratio. Musical features of humming seem to improve the physiological stability of preterm infants during kangaroo care.

ABSTRACT

Hospital surfaces can harbour bacterial pathogens, which may disseminate and cause nosocomial infections, contributing towards mortality in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). During the BARNARDS study, hospital surfaces from neonatal wards were sampled to assess the degree of environmental surface and patient care equipment colonisation by Gram-negative bacteria (GNB) carrying antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). Here, we perform PCR screening for extended-spectrum ß-lactamases (blaCTX-M-15) and carbapenemases (blaNDM, blaOXA-48-like and blaKPC), MALDI-TOF MS identification of GNB carrying ARGs, and further analysis by whole genome sequencing of bacterial isolates. We determine presence of consistently dominant clones and their relatedness to strains causing neonatal sepsis. Higher prevalence of carbapenemases is observed in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia, compared to other countries, and are mostly found in surfaces near the sink drain. Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter hormaechei, Acinetobacter baumannii, Serratia marcescens and Leclercia adecarboxylata are dominant; ST15 K. pneumoniae is identified from the same ward on multiple occasions suggesting clonal persistence within the same environment, and is found to be identical to isolates causing neonatal sepsis in Pakistan over similar time periods. Our data suggests persistence of dominant clones across multiple time points, highlighting the need for assessment of Infection Prevention and Control guidelines.

ABSTRACT

Chromoblastomycosis (CBM) and pheohyphomycosis (PHM) are the most common implantation mycoses caused by dematiaceous fungi. In the past, flucytosine (5-FC) has been used to treat CBM, but development of resistance is common. Carmofur belongs to the same class as 5-FC and has in vitro inhibitory activity against the main agents of CBM and PHM. The aim of this study was to compare the action of these two pyrimidine analog drugs against CBM and PHM agents. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and the selectivity index based on cytotoxicity tests of these two drugs against some agents of these mycoses were determined, with carmofur presenting a higher selectivity index than 5-FC. Carmofur demonstrated here synergistic interactions with itraconazole and amphotericin B against Exophiala heteromorpha, Fonsecaea pedrosoi, Fonsecaea monophora, and Fonsecaea nubica strains. Additionally, carmofur plus itraconazole demonstrated here synergism against a Phialophora verrucosa strain. To evaluate the development of carmofur resistance, passages in culture medium containing subinhibitory concentrations of this pyrimidine analog were carried out, followed by in vitro susceptibility tests. Exophiala dermatitidis quickly developed resistance, whereas F. pedrosoi took seven passages in carmofur-supplemented medium to develop resistance. Moreover, resistance was permanent in E. dermatitidis but transient in F. pedrosoi. Hence, carmofur has exhibited certain advantages, albeit accompanied by limitations such as the development of resistance, which was expected as with 5-FC. This underscores its therapeutic potential in combination with other drugs, emphasizing the need for a meticulous evaluation of its application in the fight against dematiaceous fungi.

ABSTRACT

Breast cancer is a growing disease, with a high worldwide incidence and mortality rate among women. Among the various types, the treatment of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) remains a challenge. Considering the recent advances in cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) cancer research, our goal was to evaluate efficacy data from studies based on chemotherapy and CAP in TNBC cell lines and animal models. A search of the literature was carried out in the PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase databases. Of the 10,999 studies, there were fifty-four in vitro studies, three in vivo studies, and two in vitro and in vivo studies included. MDA-MB-231 cells were the most used. MTT, MTS, SRB, annexin-V/propidium iodide, trypan blue, and clonogenic assay were performed to assess efficacy in vitro, increasing the reliability and comprehensiveness of the data. There was found to be a decrease in cell proliferation after both chemotherapy and CAP; however, different protocol settings, including an extensive range of drug doses and CAP exposure times, were reported. For both therapies, a considerable reduction in tumor volume was observed in vivo compared with that of the untreated group. The treatment of TNBC cell lines with CAP proved successful, with apoptosis emerging as the predominant type of cellular death. This systematic review presents a comprehensive overview of the treatment landscape in chemotherapy and CAP regarding their efficacy in TNBC cell lines.

ABSTRACT

H. pylori infection is a significant global health concern. It cannot be diagnosed based solely on the patient's medical history and symptoms, and laboratory and imaging tests are often required to confirm the diagnosis. Both non-invasive and invasive methods are available for diagnosing H. pylori infection, including conventional and advanced detection techniques. It is not uncommon for patients to present with false-negative results due to the use of inadequate investigation methodologies, which prevents the adoption of appropriate clinical management. Thus, an analysis of the literature regarding the methods of diagnosis of H. pylori, with its advantages and disadvantages, is necessary. Publications in specialized scientific journals will undoubtedly contribute to facilitating access by professionals interested in the topic providing greater knowledge and potentially clinically useful guidance. In this review, the authors have sought to analyze and summarize the invasive and non-invasive methods, their applications, limitations, and the conditions that affect the sensitivity of the tests used for diagnosing H. pylori, an essential step for the successful treatment of this infection. It is essential to treat all patients infected with H. pylori. This represents a significant change in the approach, as previously treatment was recommended only for patients showing symptoms of infection. Therefore, it is crucial to understand the limitations of traditional diagnostic methods and help raise awareness among healthcare professionals about the latest advances in diagnosing this important bacterium.
