ABSTRACT

Occurrence of multiple whitetip reef sharks Triaenodon obesus in the Atlantic Ocean is reported for the first time from near a sunken ferry off the Paraná coast in south-eastern Brazil. This occurrence is hypothesized to have been caused by either a human introduction or a remarkably long oceanic displacement.

ABSTRACT

The Paiva's blenny Lupinoblennius paivai is redescribed and its range redefined along the Brazilian coast. It differs from its congeners by the presence of three cephalic pores between the dorsal-fin base and lateral line, dorsal-fin elements XII, 12, anal-fin elements II, 16, pectoral-fin rays 14 and 10 + 20 vertebrae. It is here reported from Amazon estuaries (Marajó and Mosqueiro islands, Pará State), increasing its range by c. 3000 km. Lupinoblennius paivai is one of the few blenniid species able to tolerate low salinities. New data about its meristics and morphometrics are presented, as well as a new habitat type.

ABSTRACT

Fishes inhabiting rhodolith beds and reefs at mesophotic depths on the Abrolhos Shelf, which encompasses the largest and richest coral reef formation in the South Atlantic Ocean, were assessed through technical diving and remotely operated vehicles (ROVs). A total of 74 fish species were recorded, including at least one new species, one new record for the south-western Atlantic and six new records for the Abrolhos region. Overfishing, mining and port activities are already threatening many endangered and commercially important species recorded on the mesophotic reefs of Abrolhos Shelf, and the establishment of marine protected areas and off-reserve fisheries regulations are urgently needed.

ABSTRACT

The authors report a case of a right hemispheric ischemic infarction on a 77-year-old patient that was monitored with an extradural intracranial pressure monitor (Ladd device). We show the huge intracranial hypertension that the brain was submitted despite of the medical treatment. The treatment of hemispheric strokes can be very challenging. The usual antiedema drugs very often prove to be of no help against the mass effect and the high intracranial pressure that some patients present. More recently reports on the literature are showing good results following a decompressive surgery on such ischemic infarcts.

ABSTRACT

The authors after a meticulous bibliography research have found 43 cases of oligodendrogliomas in the posterior fossa. Out of these 43 cases they came to know that two of them were located in the cerebello pontine angle. The authors describe one more case of this pathology in this rare localization and call attention to the fact that the evolution of this case has been confirmed during the last sixteen years.
