ABSTRACT
The Swan-Ganz catheter makes it possible to monitor important hemodynamic parameters to control the critical patient: pressure in several cavities and large veins, calculation of cardiac output, measurement of central temperature and oxygen saturation, drug administration and drawing of blood samples. The catheter has different lumens and devices to perform these functions. Nurses have a very important role in the placement, maintenance and removal of the catheter, both to maintain optimum functioning and to reduce the risks involved.
