ABSTRACT

Transcription is slow relative to many post-transcriptional processes in the brain. Using the rich system of division of labor in the honeybee (Apis mellifera), we found extreme differences in the extent to which behavioral occupations of different durations were associated with gene-expression differences in the brain. Nursing and foraging, occupations lasting > 1 week, were associated with significant expression differences for nearly one-quarter of the genes tested (1208 of 5563 cDNAs tested; P < 0.01, anova), consistent with previous results. In contrast, transitional occupations, performed for 1-2 days after nursing and before the onset of foraging, were associated with either no differences (guards vs. undertakers; 19 cDNAs, fewer than the expectation of 56 false-positives) or few differences (comb builders vs. guards and undertakers; 248 cDNAs), but extensive differences relative to both nursing and foraging (> 500 cDNAs, all contrasts). Statistical power analysis indicated that expression differences of two-, 1.5- and 1.25-fold should have been detected in 100, 92 and 37% of cases, respectively. Replication of previous results at these magnitudes was 95, 71 and 51%, with no genes showing differences in the opposite direction. These results indicate that behavioral plasticity over different time-scales may be associated with substantial differences in the extent of genomic plasticity in the brain.

ABSTRACT

The slots of five upper left central incisor brackets from 11 commercially available bracket systems (3M Unitek, Monrovia, Calif: Twin Torque Roth, Clarity MBT, and Victory Series MBT; Dentarum, Pforzheim, Germany: Discovery Roth (0.56 mm) and Elegance Plastic Roth; Forestadent, Pforzheim, Germany: Mini Mono MBT; TP LaPorte, Indiana: Nu-Edge Roth and Mxi Advant-Edge Roth; Ormco Corp., Orange, Calif: Damon II SL Roth; Ortho Organizers, San Marcos, Calif: Elite Mini Opti-MIM Roth and Elite Mini Opti-MIM MBT) were measured in the 0.022-inch (0.5588 mm) dimension. Measurements were taken after operator calibration, and a digital readout was produced. Results indicate that all bracket slots are oversized. Three bracket systems slots (Twin Torque, Clarity, and Mini Mono) were within 5% (+/-1.08, 1.655, 1.75) of their stated dimensions with essentially parallel slot walls. The Elegance Plastic slot was parallel sided but oversized by 12% (+/-1.15). The geometry of bracket slots was also variable. The Victory Series slot was slightly divergent with the top oversized by 6% (+/-1.035). The Nu-Edge slot was divergent and slot top oversized by 14% (+/-1.32). The Mxi Advant-Edge, Damon II SL, Elite Mini Opti-MIM Roth, and MBT were all convergent, and the base of the Damon slot was oversized by 17% (+/-1.79). The Discovery bracket was convergent, and the slot base was oversized by 24% (+/-1.255), which was the largest recorded variance. This bracket also had a 7% difference between the widths of the slot top and the base. Inaccurate machining of bracket slot dimensions and the use of undersized archwires may directly and adversely affect three-dimensional tooth positioning.

ABSTRACT

A 42-year-old, edentulous man presented with a defect in his hard palate. He gave a history of a painless lump one year previously which had discharged after a week. Investigations showed only long-standing hypoplasia of the left palatine process, with no evidence of any destructive process. We assumed that the fistula had developed as a result of breakdown of the mucosa covering an isolated cleft of the hard palate. We offered him repair, but he preferred to rely on his maxillary complete denture to cover the defect, and this has worked.
