ABSTRACT

Zn2GeO4 is considered a very promising alternative to current luminescent semiconductors. Previous results suggest that its emitted wavelength may depend on different variables, such as particle size and morphology, among others. In this work, we have prepared pure and highly homogeneous Zn2GeO4 nanorods under hydrothermal synthesis conditions with a willemite-like structure. Their luminescent properties have been explored and their band gap is estimated, which are distinct from those of previously reported Zn2GeO4 bulk particles. Therefore, our results identify particle morphology as a crucial factor for maximizing and fine-tuning the luminescence of Zn2GeO4 nano-phosphors.

ABSTRACT

The SARS CoV-2 antibody and CD4+ T cell responses induced by natural infection and/or vaccination decline over time and cross-recognize other viral variants at different levels. However, there are few studies evaluating the levels and durability of the SARS CoV-2-specific antibody and CD4+ T cell response against the Mu, Gamma, and Delta variants. Here, we examined, in two ambispective cohorts of naturally-infected and/or vaccinated individuals, the titers of anti-RBD antibodies and the frequency of SARS-CoV-2-specific CD4+ T cells up to 6 months after the last antigen exposure. In naturally-infected individuals, the SARS-CoV-2 antibody response declined 6 months post-symptoms onset. However, the kinetic observed depended on the severity of the disease, since individuals who developed severe COVID-19 maintained the binding antibody titers. Also, there was detectable binding antibody cross-recognition for the Gamma, Mu, and Delta variants, but antibodies poorly neutralized Mu. COVID-19 vaccines induced an increase in antibody titers 15-30 days after receiving the second dose, but these levels decreased at 6 months. However, as expected, a third dose of the vaccine caused a rise in antibody titers. The dynamics of the antibody response upon vaccination depended on the previous SARS-CoV-2 exposure. Lower levels of vaccine-induced antibodies were associated with the development of breakthrough infections. Vaccination resulted in central memory spike-specific CD4+ T cell responses that cross-recognized peptides from the Gamma and Mu variants, and their duration also depended on previous SARS-CoV-2 exposure. In addition, we found cross-reactive CD4+ T cell responses in unexposed and unvaccinated individuals. These results have important implications for vaccine design for new SARS-CoV-2 variants of interest and concern.

ABSTRACT

This article focuses on the Na2O-Ga2O3-TiO2 system, which is barely explored in the study of transparent conductive oxides (TCOs). NaxGa4+xTin-4-xO2n-2 (n = 5, 6, and 7 and x ≈ 0.7-0.8) materials were characterized using neutron powder diffraction and aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy. Activation energy, as a function of different structures depending on tunnel size, shows a significant improvement in Na+ ion conduction from hexagonal to octagonal tunnels. New insights into the relationship between the crystal structure and the transport properties of TCOs, which are crucial for the design and development of new optoelectronic devices, are provided.

ABSTRACT

Objective The COVID-19 pandemic has imposed a great burden on healthcare workers worldwide. The aim of the present study was to assess sleep quality, insomnia, and perceived stress in healthcare workers of a high complexity hospital located in Bogota, Colombia. Methods Cross-sectional study in which 1,155 healthcare workers at the Hospital Universitario San Ignacio in Bogotá, Colombia were included, between September and October 2020. Using an online-based survey, self-reported variables were assessed including demographics, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), and 10 item Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10). Associations between these variables were evaluated. Results Fifty percent of the respondents were between 31 and 45 years old, and 76 percent were women. Most of the surveyed were the nursing staff. Poor sleep quality, insomnia, and high perceived stress was found in 74.9, 12.4, and 13.2%, respectively. Poor sleep quality was predominantly found in females, in the 31 to 45 years old group and in married personnel. Also, poor sleep quality was found in relation to a moderate to high perceived risk of COVID-19 infection by the family of the workers surveyed. Discussion Poor sleep quality, moderate rates of insomnia, and perceived stress were found among healthcare workers committed to COVID-19 infected patients in Colombia. The identification of workers at greater risk and the implementation of targeted interventions are called upon as the results.

ABSTRACT

The temperature-dependent luminescence properties of γ-Ga2O3 nanoparticles prepared by a precipitation method are investigated under steady-state and pulsed-light excitation. The main photoluminescence (PL) emission at room temperature consists of a single blue band centered around 2.76 eV, which hardly undergoes a blueshift of 0.03 eV when temperature goes down to 4 K. The emission behaves with a positive thermal quenching following an Arrhenius-type curve. The data fitting yields two non-radiative levels affecting the emission band with activation energies of 7 meV and 40 meV. On the other hand, time-resolved PL measurements have also been taken and studied as a function of the temperature. The data analysis has resulted in two lifetimes: one of 3.4 ns and the other of 32 ns at room temperature, which undergo an increase up to 4.5 ns and 65 ns at T = 4 K, respectively. Based on both stationary and dynamic PL results, a model of radiative and non-radiative levels associated with the main emission bands of γ-Ga2O3 is suggested. Finally, by using PL excitation measurements, an estimation of the bandgap and its variation with temperature between 4 K and room temperature were obtained and assessed against O'Donnell-Chen's law. With this variation it has been possible to calculate the average of the phonon energy, resulting in ⟨hω⟩ = 10 ± 1 meV.

ABSTRACT

Background: Patients with sleep apnea (SA) and coronary artery disease (CAD) are at higher risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) than the general population. Our objectives were: to evaluate the role of CAD and SA in determining AF risk through cluster and survival analysis, and to develop a risk model for predicting AF. Methods: Electronic medical record (EMR) database from 22,302 individuals including 10,202 individuals with AF, CAD, and SA, and 12,100 individuals without these diseases were analyzed using K-means clustering technique; k-nearest neighbor (kNN) algorithm and survival analysis. Age, sex, and diseases developed for each individual during 9 years were used for cluster and survival analysis. Results: The risk models for AF, CAD, and SA were identified with high accuracy and sensitivity (0.98). Cluster analysis showed that CAD and high blood pressure (HBP) are the most prevalent diseases in the AF group, HBP is the most prevalent disease in CAD; and HBP and CAD are the most prevalent diseases in the SA group. Survival analysis demonstrated that individuals with HBP, CAD, and SA had a 1.5-fold increased risk of developing AF [hazard ratio (HR): 1.49, 95% CI: 1.18-1.87, p = 0.0041; HR: 1.46, 95% CI: 1.09-1.96, p = 0.01; HR: 1.54, 95% CI: 1.22-1.94, p = 0.0039, respectively] and individuals with chronic kidney disease (CKD) developed AF approximately 50% earlier than patients without these comorbidities in a period of 7 years (HR: 3.36, 95% CI: 1.46-7.73, p = 0.0023). Comorbidities that contributed to develop AF earlier in females compared to males in the group of 50-64 years were HBP (HR: 3.75 95% CI: 1.08-13, p = 0.04) CAD and SA in the group of 60-75 years were (HR: 2.4 95% CI: 1.18-4.86, p = 0.02; HR: 2.51, 95% CI: 1.14-5.52, p = 0.02, respectively). Conclusion: Machine learning based algorithms demonstrated that CAD, SA, HBP, and CKD are significant risk factors for developing AF in a Latin-American population.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to determine the cumulative incidence, prevalence, and seroconversion of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) and its associated factors among healthcare workers (HCWs) of a University Hospital in Bogotá, Colombia. An ambispective cohort was established from March 2020 to February 2021. From November 2020 to February 2021, SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were measured on two occasions 14-90 days apart to determine seroprevalence and seroconversion. We used multivariate log-binomial regression to evaluate factors associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Among 2,597 HCWs, the cumulative incidence of infection was 35.7%, and seroprevalence was 21.5%. A reduced risk of infection was observed among those aged 35-44 and ≥45 years (adjusted relative risks [aRRs], 0.84 and 0.83, respectively), physicians (aRR, 0.77), those wearing N95 respirators (aRR, 0.82) and working remotely (aRR, 0.74). Being overweight (aRR, 1.18) or obese (aRR, 1.24); being a nurse or nurse assistant (aRR, 1.20); working in the emergency room (aRR, 1.45), general wards (aRR, 1.45), intensive care unit (aRR, 1.34), or COVID-19 areas (aRR, 1.17); and close contact with COVID-19 cases (aRR, 1.47) increased the risk of infection. The incidence of SARS-CoV-2 infection found in this study reflects the dynamics of the first year of the pandemic in Bogotá. A high burden of infection calls for strengthening prevention and screening measures for HCWs, focusing especially on those at high risk.

ABSTRACT

Data federation offers a way to get data moving from multiple sources providing advantages in healthcare systems where medical data is often hard to reach because of regulations or the lack of reliable solutions that can integrate on top of protocols like FHIR, HL7, DICOM, among others. Given the increasing need for solutions that augment healthcare systems with artificial intelligence (AI), in fields like genomics, cancer treatment, and radiology, all of which will require solutions that can provide data at scale while being traceable, safe, and regulatory-compliant. This paper proposes an architectural solution that may provide the core capabilities to implement a data federation approach in a healthcare system to enable AI.

Abstract Objectives: To determine the prevalence of antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 and the incidence of seroconversion in the first month of follow-up among interns, residents, and medical doctors attending patients at a University Hospital in Bogota (Colombia). Design or methods: A cross-sectional and a prospective study were performed during June, July, and August 2020 to assess seroprevalence and seroconversion rates using CLIA IgG for SARS-CoV-2. LFA IgG and IgM and ELFA IgM were also determined to explore concordance with CLIA IgG. Results: At baseline, 8 (2.28% 95%CI 1.16-4.43%) participants were IgG positive for SARS-CoV-2 by CLIA. At the end of the study, 21 (5.98% 95%CI 3.94-8.97%) individuals seroconverted by CLIA IgG. In all, 29 individuals had IgG by CLIA and of these 11 (3.13% 95%CI 1.76-5.52%) were asymptomatic. No associations with risk factors for infection were identified. CLIA IgG had moderate concordance (>962 samples) with LFA IgG and ELFA IgM, but minimal with LFA IgM. Conclusions: Our report is the first in Latina America on seroprevalence and seroconversion rates in medical healthcare workers. The relatively high rate (>3%) of asymptomatic health care workers with evidence of previous SARS-CoV-2 infection underscores the need to screen this population for infection to prevent infection/disease spread.


Resumen Objetivos: Determinar la prevalencia de anticuerpos frente al SARS-CoV-2 y la incidencia de seroconversión en el primer mes de seguimiento en internos, residentes y médicos que atienden pacientes en un Hospital Universitario de Bogotá (Colombia). Diseño y métodos: Se realizó un estudio transversal y prospectivo durante junio, julio y agosto de 2020 para evaluar las tasas de seroprevalencia y seroconversión utilizando CLIA IgG para SARS-CoV-2. También se determinaron LFA IgG e IgM y ELFA IgM para explorar la concordancia con CLIA IgG. Resultados: Al inicio del estudio, 8 (2,28% IC del 95% 1,16-4,43%) participantes fueron IgG positivos para SARS-CoV-2 por CLIA. No se identificaron asociaciones con factores de riesgo de infección. El CLIA IgG tuvo una concordancia moderada (> 962 muestras) con LFA IgG y ELFA IgM, pero mínima con el LFA IgM. Conclusiones: Nuestro informe es el primero en América Latina sobre tasas de seroprevalencia y seroconversión en trabajadores médicos de la salud. La tasa relativamente alta (> 3%) de trabajadores de la salud asintomáticos con evidencia de infección previa por SARS-CoV-2 resalta la necesidad de realizar pruebas de detección de infección en esta población para prevenir la propagación de la infección.

ABSTRACT

In this work, semiconductor tin oxide (II) (SnO) nanoparticles and plates were synthesized at room conditions via a hydrolysis procedure. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the high crystallinity of the as-synthesized romarchite SnO nanoparticles with dimensions ranging from 5 to 16 nm. The stability of the initial SnO and the controlled oxidation to SnO2 was studied based on either thermal treatments or controlled laser irradiation using a UV and a red laser in a confocal microscope. Thermal treatments induced the oxidation from SnO to SnO2 without formation of intermediate SnOx, as confirmed by thermodiffraction measurements, while by using UV or red laser irradiation the transition from SnO to SnO2 was controlled, assisted by formation of intermediate Sn3O4, as confirmed by Raman spectroscopy. Photoluminescence and Raman spectroscopy as a function of the laser excitation source, the laser power density, and the irradiation duration were analyzed in order to gain insights in the formation of SnO2 from SnO. Finally, a tailored spatial SnO/SnO2 micropatterning was achieved by controlled laser irradiation with potential applicability in optoelectronics and sensing devices.

ABSTRACT

Achieving nanostructures with high surface area is one of the most challenging tasks as this metric usually plays a key role in technological applications, such as energy storage, gas sensing or photocatalysis, fields in which NiO is gaining increasing attention recently. Furthermore, the advent of modern NiO-based devices can take advantage of a deeper knowledge of the doping process in NiO, and the fabrication of p-n heterojunctions. By controlling experimental conditions such as dopant concentration, reaction time, temperature or pH, NiO morphology and doping mechanisms can be modulated. In this work, undoped and Sn doped nanoparticles and NiO/SnO2 nanostructures with high surface areas were obtained as a result of Sn incorporation. We demonstrate that Sn incorporation leads to the formation of nanosticks morphology, not previously observed for undoped NiO, promoting p-n heterostructures. Consequently, a surface area value around 340 m2/g was obtained for NiO nanoparticles with 4.7 at.% of Sn, which is nearly nine times higher than that of undoped NiO. The presence of Sn with different oxidation states and variable Ni3+/Ni2+ ratio as a function of the Sn content were also verified by XPS, suggesting a combination of two charge compensation mechanisms (electronic and ionic) for the substitution of Ni2+ by Sn4+. These results make Sn doped NiO nanostructures a potential candidate for a high number of technological applications, in which implementations can be achieved in the form of NiO-SnO2 p-n heterostructures.

ABSTRACT

The optimization of novel transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) implies a better understanding of the role that the dopant plays on the optoelectronic properties of these materials. In this work, we perform a systematic study of the homologous series ZnkIn2Ok+3 (IZO) by characterizing the specific location of indium in the structure that leads to a nanodomain framework to release structural strain. Through a systematic study of different terms of the series, we have been able to observe the influence of the k value in the nano-structural features of this homologous series. The stabilization and visualization of the structural modulation as a function of k is discussed, even in the lowest term of the series (k = 3). The strain fields and atomic displacements in the wurtzite structure as a consequence of the introduction of In3+ are evaluated.

ABSTRACT

Transition metal oxides potentially present higher specific capacities than the current anodes based on carbon, providing an increasing energy density as compared to commercial Li-ion batteries. However, many parameters could influence the performance of the batteries, which depend on the processing of the electrode materials leading to different surface properties, sizes or crystalline phases. In this work a comparative study of tin and titanium oxide nanoparticles synthesized by different methods, undoped or Li doped, used as single components or in mixed ratio, or alternatively forming a composite with graphene oxide have been tested demonstrating an enhancement in capacity with Li doping and better cyclability for mixed phases and composite anodes.

ABSTRACT

In this work, layered hybrid composites formed by tin oxide (SnO) nanoparticles synthesized by hydrolysis and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)-poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) have been analyzed. Prior to the composite study, both SnO and PEDOT:PSS counterparts were characterized by diverse techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), photoluminescence (PL), atomic force microscopy (AFM), optical absorption and Hall effect measurements. Special attention was given to the study of the stability of the polymer under laser illumination, as well as the analysis of the SnO to SnO2 oxidation assisted by laser irradiation, for which different laser sources and neutral filters were employed. Synergetic effects were observed in the hybrid composite, as the addition of SnO nanoparticles improves the stability and electrical conductivity of the polymer, while the polymeric matrix in which the nanoparticles are embedded hinders formation of SnO2. Finally, the Si passivation behavior of the hybrid composites was studied.

ABSTRACT

The effects of Cr on local environment and electronic structure of rutile TiO2 are studied combining theoretical and experimental approaches. Neutral and negatively charged substitutional Cr impurities CrTi0 and CrTi1- as well as Cr-oxygen vacancy complex 2CrTi + VO are studied by the density functional theory (DFT) within the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) of Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (PBE) functional. Experimental results based on X-Ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) performed on Cr doped TiO2 at the Synchrotron facility were compared to the theoretical results. It is shown that the electrons of the oxygen vacancy tend to be localized at the t2g states of the Cr ions in order to reach the stable oxidation state of Cr3+. Effects of Cr on crystal field (CF) and structural distortions in the rutile TiO2 cell were analyzed by the DFT calculations and XAS spectra revealing that the CF and tetragonal distortions in TiO2 are very sensitive to the concentration of Cr.

Objective: To provide a comprehensive transnational overview of wait times for epilepsy surgery in Canada and Mexico. Methods: We reviewed all cases referred for epilepsy surgery between 2007 and 2015 at the Saskatchewan Epilepsy Program Royal University Hospital (SEP) (n = 70; Saskatoon, Canada) and the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery (NINN) (n = 76; Mexico City, Mexico) and compared wait times, calculated as the time from diagnosis of epilepsy on assessment at an epilepsy center to epilepsy surgery. Results: Mean wait times were similar across centers. Mean patient age was 37.4 ± 9 years (NINN) and 36.7 ± 13.2 years (SEP). The mean time from epilepsy diagnosis to referral was 18.9 (NINN) and 16.9 years (SEP), p = 0.30; first consult with the epileptologist, 19.7 (NINN) and 17.4 years (p = 0.23); neuropsychology consult, 21.4 (NINN) and 17.9 years (SEP); video electroencephalogram (video-EEG) telemetry, 21.1 (NINN) and 18.6 months (SEP); initial neurosurgical consult, 21.9 (NINN) and 19.1 years (SEP) (p = 0.35); and epilepsy surgery, 19.7 (NINN) and 19.6 years (SEP) (p = 0.29). Significance: This is the first study to compare wait times between Canada and Mexico. Despite disparity in their health delivery systems and financial resources, surgical wait times appeared to be protracted in both nations, confirming that delayed treatment is a universal problem that requires collaborative scrutiny.

BACKGROUND: Augmentation cystoplasty is a successful surgical procedure for the management of neurogenic bladder in children in order to improve urodynamic parameters. The aim of this article is to describe urodynamic changes after augmentation cystoplasty in children with myelomeningocele. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study including children aged 8-16 years with a myelomeningocele operated on for augmentation cystoplasty surgery with sigmoid colon segments due to a neurogenic bladder from the years 2003-2013. A urodynamic study was conducted before and after the surgical procedure. Non-probabilistic sample of consecutive cases. Descriptive statistics with frequencies and percentages, medians, and ranges. Inferential intra-group comparison with the Wilcoxon test and inter-group with Mann-Whitney U. SPSS 20.0 statistical package. RESULTS: The study included 50 patients, of whom 25 were male and 25 were female, with a median age of 12 years (range, 6-15 years). Bladder capacity improved from 52.8% to 95.9% (p<0.001), uninhibited contractions 1.4-1.8, contraction intensity 47-8.5 (p<0.001), mean pre-surgical and post-surgical filling pressure 40.8cm H2O and 11.0cm H2O, respectively (p<0.001), mean emptying pressure 48.5 vs. 3.6cm H2O (p<0.001), and bladder accommodation 4.6 vs. 41.3cm H2O (p<0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Augmentation cystoplasty with sigmoid colon significantly improved urodynamic parameters, such as bladder accommodation and filling pressure in children with myelomeningocele-associated neurogenic bladder.

ABSTRACT

Reported herein is the discovery of a novel family of "clicked" estradiol-based LMWGs whose gelation ability highly depends on the gelator symmetry. These LMWGs that gel different organic solvents in the presence of H(2)O even at concentrations as low as 0.04 wt% are readily accessible using "click" chemistry.
