ABSTRACT

The disadvantages of some conventional drugs, including their low bioavailability, poor targeting efficiency, and important side effects, have led to the rational design of drug delivery systems. In particular, the introduction of drug delivery systems is a potential approach to enhance the uptake of therapeutic agents and deliver them at the right time and in the right amount of concentration at the required site, as well as open new strategies for effective illness treatment. In this review, we provide a basic understanding of drug delivery systems with an emphasis on the use of cyclodextrin-, polymer- and surfactant-based delivery systems. These systems are very attractive because they are biocompatible and biodegradable nanomaterials with multifunctional components. We also provide some details on their design considerations and their use in a variety of medical applications by employing several routes of administration.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: This study aimed to ascertain the impact of topical breast milk and diaper-area care instruction on the prevention of diaper dermatitis in rural settings. DESIGN AND METHODS: This was a pre-test-post-test experimental study with forty-eight 6-18-month-old children and their mothers. Participants were randomly assigned to three groups: two experimental groups (Group A: breast milk, Group B: education) and one control group (Group C). Data were collected face-to-face through home-visits. A sociodemographic data and diaper-area care practices form and The Scale for Assessing the Severity of Uncomplicated Diaper Dermatitis in Infants were used for data collection. RESULTS: There was a statistically significant difference between children who used breast milk application to prevent dermatitis compared to children whose parents received diaper-area care education and a control group (p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: It was determined that topical breast milk application and diaper-area care education given to mothers were effective in preventing diaper dermatitis, and the application of breast milk was found to be safe and more effective than education. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: These findings highlight the need for education, information and practical solutions to prevent and appropriately treat diaper dermatitis.

ABSTRACT

Biofilms are complex microbial communities formed by the attachment of bacteria or fungi to surfaces encased in a self-produced polymeric matrix. These biofilms are highly resistant to conventional antimicrobial therapies. The resistance mechanisms exhibited by biofilms include low antibiotic absorption, sluggish replication, adaptive stress response, and the formation of dormant-like phenotypes. The eradication of biofilms requires alternative strategies and approaches. Nanotechnological drug delivery systems allow excellent control over the drug chemistry, surface area, particle size, particle shape, and composition of nanostructures. Nanoformulations can enhance the efficacy of antimicrobial agents by improving their bioavailability, stability, and targeted delivery to the site of infection that helps biofilm eradication more effectively. In addition to nanoformulations, the route of administration and choice of dosage forms play a crucial role in treating biofilm infections. Systemic administration of antibiotics is effective in controlling systemic infection and sepsis associated with biofilms. Alternative routes of administration, such as inhalation, vaginal, ocular, or dermal, have been explored to target biofilm infections in specific organs. This review primarily examines the utilisation of nanoformulations in various administration routes for biofilm management. It also provides an overview of biofilms, current approaches, and the drawbacks associated with conventional methods.

ABSTRACT

IMPORTANCE: A viable occupational therapy program based on joint attention is needed to ensure that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) lead lives in which they interact socially. OBJECTIVE: To explore the benefit of a joint attention-based occupational therapy program offered simultaneously with the usual special education program (USEP) compared with USEP alone. DESIGN: Randomized controlled study, including pre-, post-, and follow-up testing. SETTING: Special education and rehabilitation center. PARTICIPANTS: Twenty children with ASD in the study group, M = 4.80 yr (SD = 0.78 yr), and the control group, M = 5.10 yr (SD = 0.73 yr), were included. INTERVENTION: All children received USEP (2 sessions/wk for 12 wk). Joint attention-based occupational therapy was applied to the study group in addition to USEP (3 sessions/wk for 12 wk). OUTCOMES AND MEASURES: The Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ), Autism Behavior Checklist (ABC), and Motor-Free Visual Perception Test-4 (MVPT-4) were implemented. RESULTS: The study group had a statistically and clinically significant improvement in SCQ, ABC, and MVPT-4 scores after the intervention (p < .001). The control group did not show statistically significant improvement in measurements (p > .05). The mean values of SCQ-Total, ABC-Total, and MVPT-4 variables measured at 3-mo follow-up were significantly different than preintervention (p < .05). CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Joint attention-based intervention, including a child-centered approach, can improve social communication, reduce ASD-related behaviors, and improve visual perception. What This Article Adds: This study emphasizes the importance of occupational therapy with a holistic perspective, based on joint attention, in terms of increasing the effectiveness of special education programs attended by children with ASD and reinforcing visual perception, communication, and positive behaviors in children with ASD.

ABSTRACT

We aimed to evaluate the effects of an occupational training program via telerehabilitation on well-being (WB), occupational balance (OB), intrinsic motivation (IM), and quality of life (QoL) in Syrian refugee children resettled in Turkey during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a single-center, prospective, randomized, non-blinded trial in which children aged 13-15 years and attending a secondary school were recruited. OB, WB, IM, and QoL were evaluated via the OB Questionnaire (OBQ11), the Well-Star Scale (WSS), the IM Scale (IMS), and the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL). The intervention group attended online occupational therapy classes. Online classes were carried out as five sessions per week, each session lasting 1 h, for 3 weeks. Questionnaires were performed at the outset of the study and following the training program. Overall, 52 refugee children were randomized into the intervention and control groups, each including 26 children. The mean OBQ11, WSS, IMS, and PedsQL scores significantly improved more in the intervention group than in the control group. This was the first study investigating the effects of a customized online training course on OB, WB, IM, and QoL in Syrian refugee children, also affected unfavorably by the COVID-19 lockdown. Our results showed significant improvements in all the study scales that we used to quantify the alterations in the aforementioned traits.
