ABSTRACT
Pelvic fractures are frequently associated with injuries to the lower genitourinary tract. However, most described injuries are noted at the time the fracture is sustained. We describe the case of a 63-year-old man who presented with haematuria 6 years after sustaining an 'open-book'-type pelvic fracture.

Ureteric injury complicates 1% of penetrating abdominal trauma. Detection and management of this rare complication is difficult. We present the case of a 32-year-old man who presented with a penetrating ureteric trauma that was treated by antegrade stenting.

Blunt renal trauma continues to promote discussion in trauma and urology circles. It seems that the three aspects that continue to arouse controversy are the decisions involved in imaging minor trauma, exploring the retroperitoneal haematoma at laparotomy and managing the major stable injury. Personal views are advanced on these aspects based on a review of the literature.

The day ward activity of a consultant urologist in a district general hospital has been recorded prospectively for the last two years. Particular attention has been paid to the case mix and the time taken. Using this information it has been possible to plan the day ward activity with greater accuracy and efficiency.

The presentation of haematuria in the otherwise fit young adult is common in military practice. Controversy still exists as to how fully such patients should be investigated. The findings in 90 military patients under 40 are reported and a scheme to rationalise the investigation of haematuria is put forward.

Reports from the Vietnam War and from Northern Ireland describe the problem of delayed urinary fistula from a ureter seen to be 'intact' at previous laparotomy for high velocity missile injury to the abdomen. This is due to remote damage to the ureteric blood supply which is difficult to recognise or predict. A recent example of the problem from the Falklands Campaign is described. Prophylactic splintage at the initial exploration is suggested.

Two cases of the Galeazzi lesion are described, in which a mechanical block to closed reduction of the dislocated inferior radio-ulnar joint was encountered. This does not seem to have been described before.
