@#Amalgam has been widely used in dentistry and its components may cause some oral mucosal changes (OMC), commonly presenting as oral lichenoid lesions (OLLs), acute or generalized sensitivity reaction or amalgam tattoo. Our objective was to determine the demographic and clinical profile of patients with and without OMC adjacent to their amalgam restorations (AR) and to evaluate the prevalence and types of AR-related OMC and associated clinical parameters.Materials and methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 83 outpatients attending the Primary Dental Care Unit at the Faculty of Dentistry, University Malaya wereexamined for the presence of AR-related OMC. The studyperiod was from early to mid July 2016. Firstly, patients’ personal details (age, gender, medical status, social habits) were analyzed and history of AR (the age, condition and number of restorations) was determined. Clinical examination of patient’s oral cavity was carried out to detect any AR-related OMC. The data collected was analyzed using SPSS 12.0.1 Result: Approximately 14.6 % patients had OMC. OLLs and amalgam tattoo made up 1.2% and 13.4% respectively. Females (8.4%) had higher predilection and Chinese were more commonly affected (8.4%). Social habits were not associated with OMC. Certain systemic diseases, age (p=0.005) and duration of amalgam (p=0.007) in the oral cavity were significant risk factors for OMC. Conclusions: Present findings suggest that AR-related OMC is uncommon. Three key parameters namely systemic diseases, patient’s age and duration of AR were identified as significant risk factors predisposing to the development of OMCs.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Mitochondrial aldehyde dehydrogenase-2 (ALDH2) is an enzyme that oxidizes acetaldehyde into acetic acid during alcohol metabolism. Many studies indicate that the rs671 GG genotype in the ALDH2 gene may play a critical role in increasing the risk of essential hypertension (EH) associated with alcohol consumption, which predominantly occurs in men. However, the literature is inconclusive in this regard. This meta-analysis aims to derive a more precise estimation of the relationship between the rs671 polymorphism and EH for both male and female drinkers and nondrinkers. METHODS: Ten cohort and case-control studies were included in the analysis with a total of 12,161 subjects; 7,062 patients and 5,099 healthy controls. RESULTS: Our results show that the rs671 GG genotype was associated with an increased risk of EH compared with the AG+AA genotype (OR = 1.27, 95 % CI = 1.17-1.37, p < 0.00001). When comparing male and female subjects, only among male individuals was a higher risk of EH found in the GG genotype compared with the AG+ AA genotype (OR = 1.59, 95 % CI = 1.40-1.80, p < 0.00001). By contrast, among female subjects, the risk of EH in the rs671 GG genotype did not differ from that detected in the AA + GG genotype. The proportion of patients with EH was significantly higher for the GG genotype carriers than for the AG+AA genotype carriers, both in the subset of drinkers (OR = 1.51, 95 % CI = 1.23-1.86, p < 0.0001) and in that of nondrinkers (OR = 1.22, 95 % CI = 1.01-1.47, p = 0.03). In addition, among carriers of the GG genotype, the risk of EH among the drinkers was similar to that found in the nondrinkers' subset (OR = 1.12, 95 %CI = 0.89-1.41, p = 0.34). CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis demonstrates that the rs671 GG genotype increases the risks of EH, especially in men, and is independent of alcohol consumption.

ABSTRACT

The manifestation and management of spontaneous axillosubclavian vein thrombosis in patients with gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) undergoing oral chemotherapy have never been described. We report a patient with a recurrent GIST who was receiving maintenance imatinib yet developed a right axillosubclavian vein thrombotic occlusion. The occluded vein was unresponsive to systemic anticoagulation but was reopened by percutaneous rheolytic thrombectomy and has shown good long-term patency. Thus, for patients with recurrent GIST undergoing imatinib therapy, axillosubclavian vein thrombosis might manifest as a complication and could be managed with rheolytic thrombectomy, which thoroughly removes intravascular thrombus and effectively re-vascularizes the thrombosed vessel uneventfully.

ABSTRACT

Chinese medicated diet is an everyday practice in China. In this study, 16 commonly used soup making tonic Chinese medicinal herbs were selected for antioxidative capacities by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), and the total phenolic contents of these herbal extracts were measured by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. It confirmed that drinking tonic soups could supplement total antioxidants intake. Amongst the tested herbal extracts, extracts of Canarium album Raeusch., Flos caryophylli and Fructus amomi were found to have the highest antioxidative activities in both DPPH and FRAP assays. Their antioxidative activities were comparable to ascorbic acid and butylated hydroxytoluene. Thus, these herbs are safe and inexpensive sources of natural antioxidants. A significant relationship between the antioxidative effects and total phenolic contents were found, indicating phenolic compounds are the major contributor of antioxidative capacities of these herbs. In addition, a strong correlation between DPPH assay and FRAP assay implied that antioxidants in these herbs were capable of scavenging free radicals and reducing oxidants.
