ABSTRACT

IMPORTANCE: Noncongenital immature teratomas in the head and neck are extremely rare, and to our knowledge have not previously been reported in the maxillary sinus of a pediatric patient. OBSERVATIONS: Teratomas are neoplasms that contain tissue from more than 1 embryonic cell layer that is foreign to the location where they arise and are most commonly found in the sacrococcygeal and gonadal regions in children. We present an unusual case of an immature teratoma in the maxillary sinus of a 10-year-old boy and discuss the diagnostic workup, management, and clinical course. CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: Immature teratomas represent a subset of benign teratomas with immature elements that may carry a worse prognosis.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to highlight the pitfalls of relying on radiographs in identifying potentially life-threatening upper airway foreign bodies in children. DESIGN: Case series. METHODS: A review of the medical records of 2 cases of upper tracheal foreign body was performed. RESULTS: Both patients presented with biphasic stridor refractory to medical therapy and chest radiographs that were normal. One patient had a history of witnessed aspiration while the other did not. Both patients were managed by endoscopic removal of foreign bodies in the operating room and experienced no long-term sequelae related to this event. CONCLUSIONS: Tracheal foreign bodies present a diagnostic challenge, and patients may fail to manifest radiographic abnormalities. In patients with a characteristic history and biphasic stridor, an endoscopic evaluation of the airway should be performed to avoid potentially devastating consequences.

ABSTRACT

Intracranial complications of otitis media are rare in the age of antiobiotics and in the developed world, but they can be life threatening when they occur. We present a case of a 47-year-old woman with no contributory otologic history who developed an otogenic temporal lobe abscess.
