ABSTRACT

Since the social cognitive model of well-being in academic\work settings was proposed, more and more studies have supported its validity. Nevertheless, most studies failed to test the temporal precedence of its core variables related to individual career development. Thus, we aimed to test this model among 1512 Chinese college students with a longitudinal perspective. They completed the Career-related Parental Support Inventory, Career Exploration and Decision Self-Efficacy-Brief Decision Scale, Career Commitment Making Scale, and Multiple Happiness Questionnaire three times being a four-month interval. The result indicated that there were more positive predicting associations between career-related parental support, career decision self-efficacy (CDSE), career commitment making, and well-being. Moreover, the longitudinal mediation analyses indicated that T1 career-related parental support was linked to T3 well-being via T2 career commitment making, and that T1 CDSE was linked to T3 well-being via T2 career commitment making. The implications of these findings for further research, practices, and policy-making were discussed.

ABSTRACT

Depression is associated with low quality of life and increased health burdens for middle-aged and older adults in resource-limited settings. Although inflammation plays an etiological role in the development and progression of depression, the directionality of the inflammation-depression relationship is unclear, especially in non-Western populations. To examine this relationship among community-dwelling Chinese middle-aged and older adults, we obtained data from the 2011, 2013, and 2015 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). The participants were aged 45 years or above at baseline in 2011 and completed the follow-up survey in 2013 and 2015. Depressive symptoms were measured using the 10-item Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale (CESD-10), and the C-reactive protein (CRP) level was used to measure individual inflammation levels. Cross-lagged regression analyses examined the inflammation-depression relationship. Cross-group analyses were performed to test for model invariance across the sexes. Pearson's correlations revealed no concurrent correlations between depression and CRP for both 2011 and 2015 (ps > 0.05, ranging 0.07-0.36) studies. Cross-lagged regression path analyses revealed that the paths from baseline CRP to depression in 2013 (ßstd = -0.01, p = 0.80), from baseline CRP to depression in 2015 (ßstd = 0.02, p = 0.47), from baseline depression to CRP in 2015 (ßstd = -0.02, p = 0.40), and from depression at 2013 to CRP in 2015 (ßstd = 0.03, p = 0.31) were not statistically significant. Additionally, the autoregressive model did not vary across the sexes (△χ 2 = 78.75, df = 54, p = 0.02, △ comparative fit index (CFI) <0.01). We failed to find a bidirectional association between the CRP levels and depressive symptoms in our sample.

ABSTRACT

The closed-off management of the university during coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) may be associated with an elevated odds of psychological and behavioral issues among college students. We aimed to use the stress-process model to explore the potential mechanisms for this phenomenon. A total of 924 college students were recruited via posters, peer referrals, and class attendance. Among them, 82 (9%) were probable depression, 190 (20.8%) were probable anxiety, and 69 (7.5%) were internet addiction. Parallel mediation was used to test this theoretical model. For personal resources, the perceived risk of COVID-19 was positively associated with psychological distress via negative coping style (ß = 0.051) and internet addiction via negative coping style or self-esteem (ß = 0.023 for negative coping style, ß = 0.015 for self-esteem). For social resources, the perceived risk of COVID-19 was positively associated with psychological distress and internet addiction via roommate relationships (ß = 0.19 for psychological distress, ß = 0.046 for internet addiction). Negative coping styles and roommate relationships are possible psychological mechanisms linking the perceived risk of COVID-19, psychological distress, and internet addiction.

ABSTRACT

Background: The HIV associated mortality is decreasing in most countries due to the widespread use of antiretroviral therapy. However, HIV-associated neurocognitive disorder (HAND) remains a problematic issue that lowers the quality of life and increases the public health burden among people living with HIV. The prevalence of HAND varies across studies and selected samples. Therefore, we aimed to quantitatively summarize the pooled prevalence of Frascati-criteria-based HAND and to explore the potential demographic, clinical, and immunological factors. Methods: A comprehensive literature search in PubMed/Medline, Web of Science, Embase, and PsycINFO was performed. A random-effects meta-analysis was conducted using the event rate (ER) for the estimation of the incidence of HAND. Subgroup meta-analyses were used to evaluate between-group differences in categorical variables. Meta-regression with the unrestricted maximum likelihood (ML) method was used to evaluate associations of continuous variables. Results: Eighteen studies whose sample sizes ranged from 206 to 1555 were included in the final analyses. The estimated prevalence of HAND, ANI, MND and HAD were 44.9% (95% CI 37.4-52.7%), 26.2% (95% CI 20.7-32.7%), 8.5% (95% CI 5.6-12.7%), 2.1% (95% CI 1.2-3.7%), respectively. Factors associated with HAND were percent female, current CD4 count, education level and country development level (all ps < 0.05). Conclusion: Longitudinal cohort and multimodal neuroimaging studies are needed to verify the clinical prognosis and the underlying neurocognitive mechanism of HAND. In addition, it is urgently necessary to establish a standardized HAND diagnostic process.

ABSTRACT

Objective: China has the largest population living with dementia, causing a tremendous burden on the aging society. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) may trigger a cascade of pathologies associated with cognitive aging. We aim to investigate the association between cardiovascular risk (CVR) factors and cognitive function in the nationally representative cohort in China. Methods: Participants were recruited from 150 counties in 28 provinces via a four-stage sampling method. The outcomes included several cognitive tasks. The independent variable was a composite score of cardiovascular risk calculated from sex-specific equations. We fitted the time-lagged regression to model the association between CVR and cognition. Besides, we performed cross-group analyses to test for model invariance across sex and age. We thus constrained path coefficients to be equal across each grouping variable (e.g., sex) and compared the fit of this constrained model with an unconstrained model in which the path coefficients were allowed to vary by group. Results: A total of 3,799 participants were included in the final analyses. We found that the CVR had a negative linear association with global cognition (ß = -0.1, p < 0.01). Additionally, CVR had inverse linear associations with domain-specific measurements of memory and learning, calculation, orientation, and visual-spatial ability (all values of p < 0.01). Regarding sex and age moderation, males had a more pronounced association between higher CVR and worse general cognition, immediate recall, orientation, calculation, and visual-spatial ability (all values of p < 0.0001). In contrast, females exhibited a slightly larger negative association in delayed recall. Older participants (>65 years old) had a more pronounced association between higher CVR and worse calculation ability (p = 0.003). Conclusion: CVD are risk factors for lower global cognition and cognitive subdomains in middle-aged and older adults in China.
