ABSTRACT

Understanding universal aspects of quantum dynamics is an unresolved problem in statistical mechanics. In particular, the spin dynamics of the one-dimensional Heisenberg model were conjectured as to belong to the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class based on the scaling of the infinite-temperature spin-spin correlation function. In a chain of 46 superconducting qubits, we studied the probability distribution of the magnetization transferred across the chain's center, [Formula: see text]. The first two moments of [Formula: see text] show superdiffusive behavior, a hallmark of KPZ universality. However, the third and fourth moments ruled out the KPZ conjecture and allow for evaluating other theories. Our results highlight the importance of studying higher moments in determining dynamic universality classes and provide insights into universal behavior in quantum systems.

ABSTRACT

Effective quantum communication between remote quantum nodes requires high fidelity quantum state transfer and remote entanglement generation. Recent experiments have demonstrated that microwave photons, as well as phonons, can be used to couple superconducting qubits, with a fidelity limited primarily by loss in the communication channel [P. Adiabatic protocols can overcome channel loss by transferring quantum states without populating the lossy communication channel. Here, we present a unique superconducting quantum communication system, comprising two superconducting qubits connected by a 0.73 m-long communication channel. Significantly, we can introduce large tunable loss to the channel, allowing exploration of different entanglement protocols in the presence of dissipation. When set for minimum loss in the channel, we demonstrate an adiabatic quantum state transfer protocol that achieves 99% transfer efficiency as well as the deterministic generation of entangled Bell states with a fidelity of 96%, all without populating the intervening communication channel, and competitive with a qubit-resonant mode-qubit relay method. We also explore the performance of the adiabatic protocol in the presence of significant channel loss, and show that the adiabatic protocol protects against loss in the channel, achieving higher state transfer and entanglement fidelities than the relay method.

ABSTRACT

AIM: This study aimed to evaluate an association between colorectal neoplasm (CRN) and skeletal muscle mass using three widely accepted skeletal muscle mass indices (SMIs) in a large population at average risk. METHOD: We performed a cross-sectional study using a screening colonoscopy database of 33 958 asymptomatic subjects aged 40-75 years. Appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) was measured using a bioelectrical impedance analyser. ASM adjusted for height squared (ASM/ht2 ), weight (ASM/wt) and body mass index (ASM/BMI) were used as indices for muscle mass. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association between SMIs and CRN. RESULTS: In a multivariable-adjusted model, the risk of an advanced CRN increased linearly with decreasing quartiles for all three SMIs. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for advanced CRN in quartiles 1, 2 and 3 of ASM/wt compared with that in quartile 4 were 1.279, 1.196 and 1.179, respectively (Ptrend  = 0.017); for ASM/BMI, ORs were 1.307, 1.144 and 1.091, respectively (Ptrend  = 0.002); and for ASM/ht2 , ORs were 1.342, 1.169 and 1.062, respectively (Ptrend  = 0.002). The risk of distally located advanced CRN was higher in quartile 1 than in quartile 4 for all three SMIs (ASM/wt, OR = 1.356; ASM/BMI, OR = 1.383; ASM/ht2 , OR = 1.430). CONCLUSION: Our study demonstrated that low skeletal muscle mass was consistently associated with the presence of advanced CRN in a population at average risk regardless of the operational definition of the SMI, and it was particularly associated with distal advanced CRN.

ABSTRACT

Phonons, and in particular surface acoustic wave phonons, have been proposed as a means to coherently couple distant solid-state quantum systems. Individual phonons in a resonant structure can be controlled and detected by superconducting qubits, enabling the coherent generation and measurement of complex stationary phonon states. We report the deterministic emission and capture of itinerant surface acoustic wave phonons, enabling the quantum entanglement of two superconducting qubits. Using a 2-millimeter-long acoustic quantum communication channel, equivalent to a 500-nanosecond delay line, we demonstrate the emission and recapture of a phonon by one superconducting qubit, quantum state transfer between two superconducting qubits with a 67% efficiency, and, by partial transfer of a phonon, generation of an entangled Bell pair with a fidelity of 84%.

ABSTRACT

One of the hallmarks of quantum physics is the generation of non-classical quantum states and superpositions, which has been demonstrated in several quantum systems, including ions, solid-state qubits and photons. However, only indirect demonstrations of non-classical states have been achieved in mechanical systems, despite the scientific appeal and technical utility of such a capability1,2, including in quantum sensing, computation and communication applications. This is due in part to the highly linear response of most mechanical systems, which makes quantum operations difficult, as well as their characteristically low frequencies, which hinder access to the quantum ground state3-7. Here we demonstrate full quantum control of the mechanical state of a macroscale mechanical resonator. We strongly couple a surface acoustic-wave8 resonator to a superconducting qubit, using the qubit to control and measure quantum states in the mechanical resonator. We generate a non-classical superposition of the zero- and one-phonon Fock states and map this and other states using Wigner tomography9-14. Such precise, programmable quantum control is essential to a range of applications of surface acoustic waves in the quantum limit, including the coupling of disparate quantum systems15,16.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To assess the biological effects, including odontoblastic differentiation of a novel light-curable material (TheraCal), on human dental pulp cells (hDPCs). METHODOLOGY: The hDPCs were isolated from freshly extracted, caries-free third molars. Ten discs of TheraCal and MTA (8 mm in diameter and 3 mm in height) were incubated in α-minimum essential medium (α-MEM) and the supernatant collected. Viability of hDPCs in response to TheraCal and MTA was measured using the WST-1 assay. RT-PCR and real-time PCR were used to detect the gene expression of dentine sialophosphoprotein (DSPP) and dentine matrix protein-1 (DMP-1). ALP staining and Alizarin red S staining were used to evaluate the expression of alkaline phosphatase (ALP) and mineralization behaviour. One-way analysis of variance and Tukey's post hoc test were used to determine the statistically significant differences as a result of the variation in test materials (P < 0.05). RESULTS: The effects of TheraCal and MTA on cell viability were similar except at the highest concentration. The mRNA level of DSPP increased significantly in the MTA group relative to the control at day 1 and 3 (P < 0.05). Also, the mRNA level of DSPP increased significantly in the TheraCal group relative to the control at day 3 (P < 0.05). The increased mRNA level of DMP-1 was 2.5-fold and 2.3-fold each in the MTA and TheraCal groups relative to the control (P < 0.05). Cells exposed to MTA exhibited a 1.4-fold increase of ALP staining relative to control (P < 0.05). In the mineralization assay, increased calcium nodule formation was twofold and 1.3-fold each in the MTA and TheraCal groups compared to the control (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: TheraCal and MTA had the ability to induce odontoblastic differentiation and mineralization of hDPCs.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to develop and evaluate a navigation program for patients with thyroid cancer. The navigation program was developed following an analysis of the unmet needs of patients who underwent surgery for thyroid cancer. Ninety-nine patients in the control group received usual care, and 95 in the navigation group were managed with a navigation program during the perioperative period. The effectiveness of the navigation program was assessed by administering a questionnaire to both groups. Overall satisfaction scores were significantly higher in the navigation than in the control group (p = .025), as were satisfaction scores on the continuity of information (p < .001), the continuity of management (p = .002), the continuity of relationships with healthcare providers (p<.001), and patient empowerment (p < .001). The newly developed navigation program for patients with thyroid cancer was effective in raising satisfaction levels and in actively managing the disease during the perioperative period.

ABSTRACT

Previous evidence suggests that the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4) is associated with the structure of brain regions that are critically involved in dysfunctional limbic-cortical network activity associated with major depressive disorder (MDD). Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and tract-based spatial statistics were used to investigate changes in white matter integrity in patients with MDD compared with healthy controls. A possible association between structural alterations in white matter tracts and DNA methylation of the SLC6A4 promoter region was also assessed. Thirty-five medication-naive patients with MDD (mean age: 40.34, male/female: 10/25) and age, gender and education level matched 49 healthy controls (mean age: 41.12, male/female: 15/34) underwent DTI. SLC6A4 DNA methylation was also measured at five CpG sites of the promoter region, and the cell type used was whole-blood DNA. Patients with MDD had significantly lower fractional anisotropy (FA) values for the genu of the corpus callosum and body of the corpus callosum than that in healthy controls (family-wise error corrected, P<0.01). Significant inverse correlations were observed between SLC6A4 DNA methylation and FA (CpG3, Pearson's correlation: r=-0.493, P=0.003) and axial diffusivity (CpG3, Pearson's correlation: r=-0.478, P=0.004) values of the body of the corpus callosum in patients with MDD. These results contribute to evidence indicating an association between epigenetic gene regulation and structural brain alterations in depression. Moreover, we believe this is the first report of a correlation between DNA methylation of the SLC6A4 promoter region and white matter integrity in patients with MDD.

ABSTRACT

We conducted a three-stage genome-wide association study (GWAS) of response to antidepressant drugs in an ethnically homogeneous sample of Korean patients in untreated episodes of nonpsychotic unipolar depression, mostly of mature onset. Strict quality control was maintained in case selection, diagnosis, verification of adherence and outcome assessments. Analyzed cases completed 6 weeks of treatment with adequate plasma drug concentrations. The overall successful completion rate was 85.5%. Four candidate single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) on three chromosomes were identified by genome-wide search in the discovery sample of 481 patients who received one of four allowed selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant drugs (Stage 1). In a focused replication study of 230 SSRI-treated patients, two of these four SNP candidates were confirmed (Stage 2). Analysis of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 samples combined (n = 711) revealed GWAS significance (P = 1.60 × 10(-8)) for these two SNP candidates, which were in perfect linkage disequilibrium. These two significant SNPs were confirmed also in a focused cross-replication study of 159 patients treated with the non-SSRI antidepressant drug mirtazapine (Stage 3). Analysis of the Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 samples combined (n = 870) also revealed GWAS significance for these two SNPs, which was sustained after controlling for gender, age, number of previous episodes, age at onset and baseline severity (P = 3.57 × 10(-8)). For each SNP, the response rate decreased (odds ratio=0.31, 95% confidence interval: 0.20-0.47) as a function of the number of minor alleles (non-response alleles). The two SNPs significantly associated with antidepressant response are rs7785360 and rs12698828 of the AUTS2 gene, located on chromosome 7 in 7q11.22. This gene has multiple known linkages to human psychological functions and neurobehavioral disorders. Rigorous replication efforts in other ethnic populations are recommended.

AIM: To evaluate the frequency of thyroglossal duct remnant (TGDR) uptake on post-therapy (131)I-scintigraphy in thyroid cancer patients, to analyse the rate of persistent TGDR uptake on follow-up combined (131)I-single-photon emission CT/CT (SPECT/CT), and to identify the differential clinical characteristics between patients with positive and negative TGDR uptake on (131)I-SPECT/CT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 179 patients treated with total thyroidectomy for thyroid cancer were enrolled in the study. At (131)I-whole-body scan (WBS), TGDR uptake was defined as an increase in radioactivity at the midline of the neck versus the thyroid bed. TGDR uptake on (131)I- SPECT/CT was defined as the presence of radioactivity at the expected pathway of the thyroglossal duct without evidence of metastatic foci. Persistent TGDR uptake was confirmed when TGDR uptake on follow-up (131)I-SPECT/CT corresponded to previous TGDR uptake detected by post-therapy (131)I-SPECT/CT. RESULTS: At SPECT/CT, TGDR uptake was noted in 86 of 179 patients. Stimulated thyroglobulin (sTg) levels were significantly higher (p = 0.02) in patients with positive TGDR uptake. Persistent TGDR uptake on follow-up (131)I-SPECT/CT was noted in 15 of 86 patients; sTg levels were significantly higher (p = 0.03) in the patients with persistent TGDR uptake. CONCLUSION: TGDR uptake is frequently visualized on post-therapy (131)I-SPECT/CT images and can be resistant to (131)I ablation. TGDR uptake has the potential to result in an elevation of serum thyroglobulin levels. (131)I-SPECT/CT clarifies TGDR uptake without additional invasive procedures or imaging studies, eliminating confusion among clinicians for managing differentiated thyroid cancer patients.

ABSTRACT

We developed a genetic marker set of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by summing risk scores of 14 SNPs showing a significant association with aspirin-exacerbated respiratory disease (AERD) from our previous 660 W genome-wide association data. The summed scores were higher in the AERD than in the aspirin-tolerant asthma (ATA) group (P=8.58 × 10(-37)), and were correlated with the percent decrease in forced expiratory volume in 1 s after aspirin challenge (r(2)=0.150, P=5.84 × 10(-30)). The area under the curve of the scores for AERD in the receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.821. The best cutoff value of the summed risk scores was 1.01328 (P=1.38 × 10(-32)). The sensitivity and specificity of the best scores were 64.7% and 85.0%, respectively, with 42.1% positive and 93.4% negative predictive values. The summed risk score may be used as a genetic marker with good discriminative power for distinguishing AERD from ATA.

ABSTRACT

Posterior neck pain following thyroidectomy is common because full neck extension is required during the procedure. We evaluated the effect of intra-operative transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation on postoperative neck pain in patients undergoing total thyroidectomy under general anaesthesia. One hundred patients were randomly assigned to one of two groups; 50 patients received transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation applied to the trapezius muscle and 50 patients acted as controls. Postoperative posterior neck pain and anterior wound pain were evaluated using an 11-point numerical rating scale at 30 min, 6 h, 24 h and 48 h following surgery. The numerical rating scale for posterior neck pain was significantly lower in the transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation group compared with the control group at all time points (p < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the numerical rating scale for anterior wound pain at any time point. No adverse effects related to transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation were observed. We conclude that intra-operative transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation applied to the trapezius muscle reduced posterior neck pain following thyroidectomy.

ABSTRACT

Plastic hematocrit tubes (PHTs) are convenient tools for electron microscopy (EM) of peripheral blood buffy coats, and the PHT-EM technique is expected to be a practical method for veterinary clinical medicine. In this study, fixatives composed of various concentrations of sucrose, glutaraldehyde, and phosphate buffer (PB) were tested for preparing canine and feline buffy coats. The highest quality images were obtained using a fixative consisting of 2.5% glutaraldehyde in 0.1 m PB, and it was concluded that this method allows clinicians who are inexperienced in histological techniques can conveniently transport buffy coat samples to diagnostic laboratories for analysis by EM.

ABSTRACT

The study evaluated the safety of reclaimed water using health risk assessment and biotoxicity tests. The reclaimed water was produced from reverse osmosis and used in industrial and miscellaneous purposes. The health risk assessment was conducted based on the concentrations of detectable pollutants in reclaimed water in a hypothetical scenario. The estimated carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks are lower than the generally accepted level. Biotoxicity evaluation included three genotoxicity tests, a chronic toxicity test using medaka fishes, and a subchronic toxicity test using mice. The reclaimed water is not genetically toxic, and does not cause significant chronic effects on these model organisms. These results confirm the safety of using reclaimed water from municipal wastewater treatment plants.

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether dentin-layer thickness of resin overlays could affect the early hardness and shear bond strength of dual-cure resin cement (DCRC, RelyX ARC) after light curing with light curing units (LCUs) of various power densities: Optilux 360 (360), Elipar Freelight 2 (FL2), and Elipar S10 (S10). Resin overlays were fabricated using an indirect composite resin (Sinfony) with a dentin layer, an enamel layer, and a translucent layer of 0.5 mm thickness each (0.5-0.5-0.5) or of 0.2 mm, 0.5 mm, and 0.8 mm thickness (0.2-0.5-0.8), respectively. The DCRC was light cured for 40 seconds through the overlays, and surface hardness and shear bond strength to bovine dentin were tested 10 minutes after the start of light curing. Surface hardness was higher when the DCRC was light cured through the 0.2-0.5-0.8 combination than when the DCRC was light cured through the 0.5-0.5-0.5 combination with all LCUs. The ratio of upper surface hardness of DCRC light cured through resin overlays relative to the upper surface hardness of DCRC light cured directly was more than 90% only when the DCRC was light cured with S10 through the 0.2-0.5-0.8 combination. The shear bond strength value was higher when the DCRC was light cured with S10 through the 0.2-0.5-0.8 combination than when light cured with S10 through the 0.5-0.5-0.5 combination. This study indicates that reducing the dentin-layer thickness while increasing the translucent-layer thickness of resin inlays can increase the photopolymerization of DCRC, thereby increasing the early bond strength of resin inlays to dentin.

AIM: This case report describes the successful autotransplantation of mandibular molars after application of orthodontic forces and discusses the advantages of this technique, that is, pre-application of an orthodontic force for autotransplantation. SUMMARY: After clinical and radiographic examination, autotransplantation was planned with the patient's written informed consent. An orthodontic force was applied, and the surgical procedure was performed after tooth mobility had increased. Root canal treatment was performed within 2 weeks of autotransplantation. At the 1-year follow-up, the transplanted teeth revealed asymptomatic and healthy periodontal conditions. KEY LEARNING POINTS: Autotransplantation is the surgical movement of a tooth from its original location to another site. The pre-application of orthodontic force technique was recently introduced for autogenous tooth transplantation. Pre-application of an orthodontic force may be a useful treatment option for autotransplantation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) with spinal cord lesions spanning three or more vertebral segments is a key feature of neuromyelitis optica (NMO). However, the role of anti-aquaporin 4 (anti-AQP4) antibody, a sensitive biomarker of NMO, in the conversion of LETM to NMO remains uncertain. METHODS: Thirty first-ever LETM patients were retrospectively analysed and divided into two groups according to the presence of anti-AQP4 antibodies. RESULTS: Eighteen (60%) patients presented with anti-AQP4 antibodies. Fifteen (83.33%) anti-AQP4 (+) LETM patients converted to NMO, while only three of 12 (25%, p = 0.002) anti-AQP4 (-) LETM patients progressed to NMO, over a mean follow-up period of 5.63 years. Seven (38.89%) anti-AQP4 (+) and one (8.33%) anti-AQP4 (-) LETM patients received interferon-ß1a treatment, respectively. Anti-AQP4 (+) LETM patients demonstrated a higher immunogamma globulin (IgG) index (0.68 ± 0.43 versus 0.47 ± 0.19, p = 0.018), annual relapse rate (0.72 ± 0.31 versus 0.42 ± 0.17, p = 0.01) and Kurtzke Expanded Disability Status Scale (4.28 ± 2.22 versus 2.67 ± 2.26, p = 0.031), than anti-AQP4 (-) LETM patients. In spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs), more than half (58.33%) of the anti-AQP4 (+) LETM patients were observed to have central grey matter-predominant involvement in the axial view, while peripheral white matter-predominant involvement (51.85%) was the most common pattern observed in the anti-AQP4 (-) LETM patients. CONCLUSION: Anti-AQP4 (+) LETM demonstrated a high conversion rate to NMO (83.33%), suggesting that anti-AQP4 (+) LETM may represent an early, isolated syndrome of NMO spectrum disorder. The greater number of patients receiving interferon-ß treatment in anti-AQP4 (+) LETM may contribute to its high annual relapse rate.
