ABSTRACT

Rice husk extract, obtained using acid and alkali pretreatment extraction (AAPE), contains bioactive compounds and exhibits reducing abilities. Phenolic composition in rice husk extract was analyzed and the mechanism of silver nanoparticle (AgNP) biosynthesis by using AAPE rice husk extract was investigated in this study. Stable and spherically shaped AgNPs with a size of <15 nm were prepared under the following conditions: 0.001 M AgNO3, AAPE rice husk extract diluted 10 times, pH 10, and reacted at 25 °C for 60 min. Synergistic effects among phenolic acids contributed to the formation of AgNPs, with the acids acting as excellent reducing agents (owing to their abundant hydroxyl groups) and excellent dispersants (owing to their derived CO groups), which enhanced the NPs' stability. Caffeic acid (CA) was demonstrated to synthesize AgNPs independently and is suggested to be the most crucial compound for reducing Ag+ during the biosynthesis with rice husk extract. A possible mechanism and reaction process for the formation of AgNPs synthesized using CA in rice husk extracts is proposed.

ABSTRACT

A seven flavonoids in hot water extract of immature kumquat (Citrus japonica var. margarita) were identified and quantified (mg/100g fresh fruit): 3',5'-di-C-ß-glucopyranosylphloretin (DGPP, 285.9 ± 2.9 mg/100g), acacetin 8-C-neohesperidoside (margaritene, 136.2 ± 2.6 mg/100g), acacetin 6-C-neohesperidoside (isomargaritene, 119.1 ± 1.8 mg/100g), fortunellin (acacetin 7-O-neohesperidoside, 28.5 ± 0.7 mg/100g), apigenin 8-C-neohesperidoside (16.9 ± 0.1mg/100g), poncirin (isosakuranetin 7-O-neohesperidoside, 5.1 ± 0.1mg/100g), and rhoifolin (apigenin 7-O-neohesperidoside, 2.0 ± 0.1mg/100g). When immature kumquat was dried at 110 and 130°C for 0.5h, the antioxidant activity, total phenolic content and identified flavonoids increased. The UV absorbance of browning products of immature kumquat dried at 130°C for 1.5h increased dramatically, while the identified flavonoids decreased. Therefore, it was concluded that drying below 130°C for 1.0 h, could release phenolic compounds, which resulted in the increasing antioxidant activity. Drying at 130°C for 1.5h, it might be due to the effect of formed browning products.

ABSTRACT

Hemagglutinating proteins (HAPs) were purified from Poker-chip Venus (Meretrix lusoria) and Corbicula clam (Corbicula fluminea) using gel-filtration chromatography on a Sephacryl S-300 column. The molecular weights of the HAPs obtained from Poker-chip Venus and Corbicula clam were 358 kDa and 380 kDa, respectively. Purified HAP from Poker-chip Venus yielded two subunits with molecular weights of 26 kDa and 29 kDa. However, only one HAP subunit was purified from Corbicula clam, and its molecular weight was 32 kDa. The two Poker-chip Venus HAPs possessed hemagglutinating ability (HAA) for erythrocytes of some vertebrate animal species, especially tilapia. Moreover, HAA of the HAP purified from Poker-chip Venus was higher than that of the HAP of Corbicula clam. Furthermore, Poker-chip Venus HAPs possessed better HAA at a pH higher than 7.0. When the temperature was at 4°C-10°C or the salinity was less than 0.5‰, the two Poker-chip Venus HAPs possessed better HAA compared with that of Corbicula clam.
