ABSTRACT

Serum soluble ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) was found to be increased in patients with chronic hepatitis. The aim of the study was the evaluation of sICAM-1 dynamics in patients with acute hepatitis A or hepatitis B. Serum level of sICAM-1 was determined in 13 patients with acute hepatic A, 19 patients with acute hepatitis B, and 20 healthy controls. Measurements were done four times, at the beginning of jaundice, in the 14th day of jaundice, at release from the hospital, and when biochemical indices of the liver function became normal. An increase in sICAM-1 was shown in the patients. There was no difference between patients with hepatitis A and those with hepatitis B. The sICAM-1 decreased in the course of recovery but the values in the last measurements were still higher than in the controls. There was no correlation of sICAM-1 and duration of hospitalization. The obtained results do not suggest sICAM-1 as diagnostic or prognostic marker in patients with acute hepatitis A or B.

ABSTRACT

Energy expenditure was investigated in 15 patients with liver cirrhosis and 20 healthy controls by three methods: indirect calorimetry, anthropometry using the Harris-Benedict equation and bioelectrical impedance analysis. The energy expenditure was expressed in kcal/day, kcal/kg BW/day (BW - body weight), kcal/kg LBM/day (LBM - lean body mass, derived by bioelectrical impedance analysis) or in kcal/m2/day. We did not find statistical differences between values of resting energy expenditure obtained in patients with cirrhosis of the liver and healthy controls whichever method we used. We also did not find statistical differences between values obtained by indirect calorimetry, anthropometry and bioelectrical impedance analysis. There was a significant correlation between indirect calorimetry and anthropometry in both groups. We found significant correlations between indirect calorimetry and anthropometry, and between indirect calorimetry and bioelectrical impedance analysis, in the control group only. We can conclude that (1) resting energy expenditure of patients with cirrhosis of the liver is not changed when compared with healthy controls, and (2) bioelectrical impedance is a useful method to calculate body composition from which energy expenditure is derived; however, it gives an appropriate result only in healthy people, and only approximate values in patients with cirrhosis.

ABSTRACT

The effect of stress during labor on the plasma concentration of cortisol was studied in 82 women. The total cortisol levels in the maternal serum and cord blood were measured by radioimmunoassay during spontaneous labor (PSN), oxytocin induced labor (PI), elective cesarean section (CCE), and emergency cesarean section (CCC). The result indicate that cortisol level was higher after PI (710 ng/ml) and CCC (755.4 ng/ml) and lower in CCE (278.9 ng/ml) in the maternal vein. In cord blood after CCC was higher (530.8 ng/ml), and lower after CCE (157.8 ng/ml).

ABSTRACT

A sporadic case of typhoid fever of 41 years of age male was characterized clinically mainly with long duration of fever and a few enlargement of liver. Diagnosis was made relatively late. In this case an endoscopic picture of upper gastrointestinal tract and ultrasonographic findings of the organs of abdominal cavity was described.

ABSTRACT

Analysis of 89 tetanus cases that appeared in Katowice district in years 1976-1988 in comparison with country data has been made. Morbidity rate was lower than country and frequency in younger age groups was lower too. About a half of dead ill persons suffered of injuries that was unusual for tetanus infections circumstances, and about a quarter of dead persons suffered only of slight and superficial trauma. Attention has been paid to frequent mistakes in specific prevention with injured persons.

ABSTRACT

A case of hepatic lues is described manifesting itself with yellow discoloration of the sclerae and raised aminotransferase level. The patient was referred to hospital with the diagnosis of virus hepatitis. Rash was observed on the trunk. Differential diagnostic procedures and good result of specific treatment established the diagnosis of luetic background of liver disease.
