ABSTRACT

Patients with recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) have more co-existing distant metastasis than those of no-recurrence and are more likely to suffer distant metastasis after re-irradiation than patients with newly diagnosed NPC. However, the relationship between radioresistance and distant metastasis and the mechanisms involved in radioresistance-associated metastasis are still unclear. In this study, we proved that C-C motif chemokine ligand 2 (CCL2) expression was significantly elevated in HONE1-IR cells and recurrent NPC tumour. Inhibition of CCL2 enhanced sensitivity to radiotherapy in NPC cells. Moreover, autocrine CCL2 promoted NPC cell adaptive radioresistance, metastasis and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. Additionally, p53 activated CCL2 transcription. High CCL2 expression was highly associated with poorer locoregional recurrence free survival, progression free survival and overall survival in patients with newly diagnosed NPC. Notably, high CCL2 expression was an independent prognostic factor for distant metastasis free survival in recurrent NPC patients. Our results provide insights into the autocrine signalling mechanisms of CCL2 and suggest that inhibition of autocrine CCL2 may be a candidate treatment strategy for management of radioresistant NPC.

ABSTRACT

Based on the demand for a volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emissions inventory for Beijing and for the reduction in VOC emissions, the three major solvent-based industries of automobile manufacturing, furniture manufacturing, and publication printing were selected for this study. In each case, emissions link negative pressure sampling was used in combination with laboratory-based GC-MS/FID to obtain the VOC spectra. The results show that there are significant differences in the emission of VOCs from the main stages of automobile manufacturing. Specifically, the paint-coating process was dominated by the emission of oxygenated VOCs and aromatic hydrocarbons, accounting for 71.26% and 27.14% of total VOC emissions, respectively. The proportion of aromatic hydrocarbons emitted during the varnishing process was very large (84.10%), which were mainly composed of the benzene series. The differences in VOC emissions during different stages of the furniture manufacturing process were small, mainly consisting of oxygenated VOCs and aromatic hydrocarbons, which accounted for 55.08% and 18.98% of the total, respectively. Of these, alcohols and esters were the main components. VOCs emitted from different stages of the publication printing process could not be monitored separately. Thus, the VOCs in the mixed exhaust gas from this process were mainly composed of alkanes and oxygenated VOCs, which accounted for 47.29% and 44.57% of the total emissions, respectively.

ABSTRACT

The tetrigid genus Criotettix Bolívar, 1887 from China is taxonomically reviewed. The genus now includes 39 species from China, in which two new species are described and illustrated, namely: Criotettix longispinus Deng, sp. nov. and Criotettix undatifemurus Deng, sp. nov..Their distribution and an annotated identification key to Chinese species are provided.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to investigate the clinicopathological characteristics and survival outcomes of the subclassification of pT2 gastric cancers according to the depth of tumor involvement. We retrospectively collected clinicopathological data and survival outcomes for pT2 gastric cancer patients from 2006 to 2011. Patients were classified into the superficial muscularis propria (sMP) and deep muscularis propria (dMP) groups. Eighty-nine patients had sMP gastric cancers and 90 patients had dMP gastric cancers. The rates of lymph node metastasis for the sMP and dMP groups were 55.1% and 64.4%, respectively, P = 0.202. The 5-year overall survival (OS) of patients in the sMP group was significantly better than patients in the dMP group (76% vs 61%, P = 0.018). Multivariate analysis demonstrated that the depth of tumor invasion, lymph node metastasis, and postoperative chemotherapy were prognostic risk factors for the OS. For patients with pN0 stage tumor(s), the sMP group had a significantly better 5-year OS rate than the dMP group (92% vs 62%, P = 0.004); for patients with pN1-N3 stages, the 5-year OS rates were comparable between the sMP and dMP groups (64% vs 61%, P = 0.540). The subclassification of pT2 gastric cancer into the sMP and dMP groups can demonstrate different survival outcomes according to the lymph node status. However, the pT2 stage subclassification in the next tumor, node, metastasis (TNM) staging system is pending and requires more large sample size studies to confirm its importance.

ABSTRACT

The present study was designed to develop and validate a sensitive and reliable ultra high performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UPLC-QTOF/MS) method to separate and identify the chemical constituents of Qixue Shuangbu Tincture (QXSBT), a classic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) prescription. Under the optimized UPLC and QTOF/MS conditions, 56 components in QXSBT, including chalcones, triterpenoids, protopanaxatriol, flavones and flavanones were identified and tentatively characterized within a running time of 42 min. The components were identified by comparing the retention times, accurate mass, and mass spectrometric fragmentation characteristic ions, and matching empirical molecular formula with that of the published compounds. In conclusion, the established UPLC-QTOF/MS method was reliable for a rapid identification of complicated components in the TCM prescriptions.

ABSTRACT

Water-soluble CdTe/ZnTe core-shell quantum dots (QDs) coated with L-cysteine were synthesized in low-temperature aqueous-phase one-pot approach. The authors measured the spectral characteristics of QDs at different pH in various buffer solutions and under different excitation laser powers. The primary results show that the absorption spectra of QDs approximately overlap and the fluorescence spectra peaks have no shift in different pH solution. The fluorescence intensity increased linearly with increasing pH. With the incubation time in borate buffer solution, the fluorescence intensity decreased a little. Under strong power laser, the QDs were photobleached rapidly. However, QDs are strongly anti-photobleaching under appropriate laser power (< 100 microW). Thus, such QDs have good biological stability and optical stability. By conjugating the QDs with transferrin protein and constructing the targeted fluorescent nanoparticles, the authors labelled the HeLa cell successfully. Photobleaching experiments in vivo show that microenvironment inside cells affect the stability and accelerate the photobleaching of QDs.
