ABSTRACT

Deferoxamine, an iron chelator used to treat diseases caused by excess iron, has had a Food and Drug Administration-approved status for many years. A large number of studies have confirmed that deferoxamine can reduce inflammatory response and promote angiogenesis. Blood vessels play a crucial role in sustaining vital life by facilitating the delivery of immune cells, oxygen, and nutrients, as well as eliminating waste products generated during cellular metabolism. Dysfunction in blood vessels may contribute significantly to the development of life-threatening diseases. Anti-angiogenesis therapy and pro-angiogenesis/angiogenesis strategies have been frequently recommended for various diseases. Herein, we describe the mechanism by which deferoxamine promotes angiogenesis and summarize its application in chronic wounds, bone repair, and diseases of the respiratory system. Furthermore, we discuss the drug delivery system of deferoxamine for treating various diseases, providing constructive ideas and inspiration for the development of new treatment strategies.

ABSTRACT

Background: The release of ChatGPT for general use in 2023 by OpenAI has significantly expanded the possible applications of generative artificial intelligence in the healthcare sector, particularly in terms of information retrieval by patients, medical and nursing students, and healthcare personnel. Objective: To compare the performance of ChatGPT-3.5 and ChatGPT-4.0 to clinical nurses on answering questions about tracheostomy care, as well as to determine whether using different prompts to pre-define the scope of the ChatGPT affects the accuracy of their responses. Design: Cross-sectional study. Setting: The data collected from the ChatGPT was collected using the ChatGPT-3.5 and 4.0 using access provided by the University of Hong Kong. The data from the clinical nurses working in mainland China was collected using the Qualtrics survey program. Participants: No participants were needed for collecting the ChatGPT responses. A total of 272 clinical nurses, with 98.5 % of them working in tertiary care hospitals in mainland China, were recruited using a snowball sampling approach. Method: We used 43 tracheostomy care-related questions in a multiple-choice format to evaluate the performance of ChatGPT-3.5, ChatGPT-4.0, and clinical nurses. ChatGPT-3.5 and GPT-4.0 were both queried three times with the same questions by different prompts: no prompt, patient-friendly prompt, and act-as-nurse prompt. All responses were independently graded by two qualified otorhinolaryngology nurses on a 3-point accuracy scale (correct, partially correct, and incorrect). The Chi-squared test and Fisher exact test with post-hoc Bonferroni adjustment were used to assess the differences in performance between the three groups, as well as the differences in accuracy between different prompts. Results: ChatGPT-4.0 showed significantly higher accuracy, with 64.3 % of responses rated as 'correct', compared to 60.5 % in ChatGPT-3.5 and 36.7 % in clinical nurses (X 2 = 74.192, p < .001). Except for the 'care for the tracheostomy stoma and surrounding skin' domain (X2 = 6.227, p = .156), scores from ChatGPT-3.5 and -4.0 were significantly better than nurses' on domains related to airway humidification, cuff management, tracheostomy tube care, suction techniques, and management of complications. Overall, ChatGPT-4.0 consistently performed well in all domains, achieving over 50 % accuracy in each domain. Alterations to the prompt had no impact on the performance of ChatGPT-3.5 or -4.0. Conclusion: ChatGPT may serve as a complementary medical information tool for patients and physicians to improve knowledge in tracheostomy care. Tweetable abstract: ChatGPT-4.0 can answer tracheostomy care questions better than most clinical nurses. There is no reason nurses should not be using it.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Dimethyl fumarate (DMF) is a fumaric acid ester that exhibits immunoregulatory and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the function of DMF in autoimmune uveitis (AU) is incompletely understood, and studies comprehensively exploring the impact of DMF on immune cells are still lacking. METHODS: To explore the function of DMF in uveitis and its underlying mechanisms, we conducted single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) on the cervical draining lymph node (CDLN) cells of normal, experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU), and DMF-treated EAU mice. Additionally, we integrated scRNA-seq data of the retina and CDLNs to identify the potential impact of DMF on ocular immune cell infiltration. Flow cytometry was conducted to verify the potential target molecules of DMF. RESULTS: Our study showed that DMF treatment effectively ameliorated EAU symptoms. The proportional and transcriptional alterations in each immune cell type during EAU were reversed by DMF treatment. Bioinformatics analysis in our study indicated that the enhanced expression of Pim1 and Cxcr4 in EAU was reversed by DMF treatment. Further experiments demonstrated that DMF restored the balance between effector T (Teff) /regulatory T (Treg) cells through inhibiting the pathway of PIM1-protein kinase B (AKT)-Forkhead box O1 (FOXO1). By incorporating the scRNA-seq data of the retina from EAU mice into analysis, our study identified that T cells highly expressing Pim1 and Cxcr4 were enriched in the retina. DMF repressed the ocular infiltration of Teff cells, and this effect might depend on its inhibition of PIM1 and CXCR4 expression. Additionally, our study indicated that DMF might reduce the proportion of plasma cells by inhibiting PIM1 expression in B cells. CONCLUSIONS: DMF effectively attenuated EAU symptoms. During EAU, DMF reversed the Teff/Treg cell imbalance and suppressed the ocular infiltration of Teff cells by inhibiting PIM1 and CXCR4 expression. Thus, DMF may act as a new drug option for the treatment of AU.

ABSTRACT

THEMIS plays an indispensable role in T cells, but its mechanism of action has remained highly controversial. Using the systematic proximity labeling methodology PEPSI, we identify THEMIS as an uncharacterized substrate for the phosphatase SHP1. Saturated mutagenesis assays and mass spectrometry analysis reveal that phosphorylation of THEMIS at the evolutionally conserved Tyr34 residue is oppositely regulated by SHP1 and the kinase LCK. Similar to THEMIS-/- mice, THEMISY34F/Y34F knock-in mice show a significant decrease in CD4 thymocytes and mature CD4 T cells, but display normal thymic development and peripheral homeostasis of CD8 T cells. Mechanistically, the Tyr34 motif in THEMIS, when phosphorylated upon T cell antigen receptor activation, appears to act as an allosteric regulator, binding and stabilizing SHP1 in its active conformation, thus ensuring appropriate negative regulation of T cell antigen receptor signaling. However, cytokine signaling in CD8 T cells fails to elicit THEMIS Tyr34 phosphorylation, indicating both Tyr34 phosphorylation-dependent and phosphorylation-independent roles of THEMIS in controlling T cell maturation and expansion.

BACKGROUND: Cow's milk allergy (CMA) is one of the most common food allergies in young children. As improved diagnostic tools, allergic tests are inconsistent and limited in predicting anaphylaxis. OBJECTIVE: To explore risk factors for anaphylaxis and to determine practical cut-offs for allergic tests in predicting anaphylaxis. METHODS: This is a prospective cohort study. Children with IgE-mediated CMA were enrolled and divided into three groups (Group 1: non-anaphylaxis; Group 2: GRADE I anaphylaxis; Group 3: GRADE II-IV anaphylaxis that warranted epinephrine). Prick-to-prick tests (PTPs) using fresh cow's milk (CM) were performed. Serum specific IgE (sIgE) against CM and its components, including casein, alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, and bovine serum albumin were measured. The 90% and 95% positive predictive value (PPV) decision points for predicting anaphylaxis were determined. Potential predictors of anaphylaxis were evaluated in logistic regression models. RESULTS: This study included 134 CMA patients with a median age of 14.4 months. The sensitization rate to any CM component was 89%. Group 3 was more likely to be sensitized to multiple CM components and have higher sIgE levels. The 95% PPV diagnostic decision points of casein-sIgE in predicting anaphylaxis was 13.0 kUA/L. For GRADE II-IV anaphylaxis, casein-sIgE ≥ 54.9 kUA/L could provide a PPV of 88.9%. The elevated casein-sIgE level (OR 14.0, P=0.025) and complicating respiratory allergic diseases (OR 4.8, P=0.022) were independent risk factors for GRADE II-IV anaphylaxis. CONCLUSION: High casein-sIgE levels are strongly associated with CM anaphylaxis. Detection of casein-sIgE may offer an additional value for the prediction of CM anaphylaxis.

ABSTRACT

Inducing cell migration from the edges to the center of a wound, promoting angiogenesis, and controlling bacterial infection are very important for diabetic wound healing. Incorporating growth factors and antibiotics into hydrogels for wound dressing is considered a potential strategy to meet these requirements. However, some present drawbacks greatly slow down their development toward application, such as the short half-life and high price of growth factors, low antibiotic efficiency against drug-resistant bacteria, insufficient ability of hydrogels to promote cell migration, etc. Deferoxamine (DFO) can upregulate the expression of HIF-1α, thus stimulating the secretion of angiogenesis-related endogenous growth factors. Copper sulfide (CuS) nanoparticles possess excellent antibacterial performance combined with photothermal therapy (PTT). Herein, DFO and CuS nanoparticles are incorporated into a biomimetic hydrogel, which mimics the structure and function of the extracellular matrix (ECM), abbreviated as DFO/CuS-ECMgel. This biomimetic hydrogel is expected to be able to promote cell adhesion and migration, be degraded by cell-secreted matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), and then release DFO and CuS nanoparticles at the wound site to exert their therapeutic effects. As a result, the three crucial requirements for diabetic wound healing, "beneficial for cell adhesion and migration, promoting angiogenesis, effectively killing drug-resistant bacteria," can be achieved simultaneously.

ABSTRACT

Autoimmune uveitis (AU) is a severe disorder causing poor vision and blindness. However, the cellular dynamics and pathogenic mechanisms underlying retinal injury in uveitis remain unclear. In this study, single-cell RNA sequencing of the retina and cervical draining lymph nodes in experimental autoimmune uveitis mice was conducted to identify the cellular spatiotemporal dynamics and upregulation of the glycolysis-related gene LDHA. Suppression of LDHA can rescue the imbalance of T effector (Teff) cells/T regulator (Treg) cells under inflammation via downregulation of the glycolysis-PI3K signaling circuit and inhibition of the migration of CXCR4+ Teff cells towards retinal tissue. Furthermore, LDHA and CXCR4 are upregulated in the peripheral blood mononuclear cells of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada patients. The LDHA inhibitor suppresses CD4+ T cell proliferation in humans. Therefore, our data indicate that the autoimmune environment of uveitis regulates Teff cell accumulation in the retina via glycolysis-associated LDHA. Modulation of this target may provide a novel therapeutic strategy for treating AU.

BACKGROUND: In response to the SARS-CoV-2 epidemic, a convenient, rapid, and sensitive diagnostic method for detecting COVID-19 is crucial for patient control and timely treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to validate the detection of SARS-CoV-2 with the Pluslife SARS-CoV-2 rapid test kit developed based on a novel thermostatic amplification technique called RNase hybridization-assisted amplification. METHODS: From November 25 to December 8, 2022, patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, close contacts, and health care workers at high risk of exposure were recruited from 3 hospitals and 1 university. Respiratory specimens were collected for testing with the Pluslife SARS-CoV-2 rapid test kit and compared with reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) and a commercial antigen assay kit. Samples from 1447 cases were obtained from 3 "ready-to-test" scenarios in which samples were collected on site and tested immediately, and samples from 503 cases were obtained from a "freeze-thaw test" scenario in which samples were collected, frozen, and thawed for testing. RESULTS: Pluslife SARS-CoV-2 rapid testing of samples from the "ready-to-test" scenario was found to be accurate (overall sensitivity and specificity of 98.3% and 99.3%, respectively) and diagnostically useful (positive and negative likelihood ratios of 145.45 and 0.02, respectively). Pluslife SARS-CoV-2 rapid testing of samples from the "freeze-thaw test" scenario was also found to be accurate (overall sensitivity and specificity of 71.2% and 98.6%, respectively) and diagnostically useful (positive and negative likelihood ratios of 51.01 and 0.67, respectively). Our findings demonstrated that the time efficiency and accuracy of the results in a "ready-to-test" scenario were better. The time required from sample preparation to the seeing the result of the Pluslife SARS-CoV-2 rapid test was 10 to 38 minutes, which was substantially shorter than that of RT-qPCR (at least 90 minutes). In addition, the diagnostic efficacy of the Pluslife SARS-CoV-2 rapid test was better than that of a commercial antigen assay kit. CONCLUSIONS: The developed RNase hybridization-assisted amplification assay provided rapid, sensitive, and convenient detection of SARS-CoV-2 infection and may be useful for enhanced detection of COVID-19 in homes, high-risk industries, and hospitals.

Musk is a scarce and precious medical resource secreted by male forest musk deer (FMD). Current research to promote musk secretion in FMD has used almost exclusively hormone injections, but this approach can be detrimental to the health of FMD. In order to conserve this endangered species as much as possible while increasing the production of musk, this study first used bioinformatics methods to predict the function of quercetin, a flavonoid that promotes testosterone (T) production and prevents late-onset male hypogonadism. On the basis of good prediction effect, different concentrations of quercetin were added to the diet of FMD. The results showed that quercetin could change the levels of T, luteinizing hormone releasing hormone, luteinizing hormone, and estradiol, and regulate the structure of intestinal microorganisms and musk microorganisms of FMD. Moreover, there is a correlation among musk components, hormones, intestinal microorganisms, and musk microorganisms, which indicates that the production of musk may be regulated by these three at the same time, and the addition of quercetin with 800 mg per kg diet could significantly increase the yield of muscone (P < 0.05), the most effective ingredient in musk. In addition, quercetin decreased the high level of cortisol during musk secretion, which may relieve the stress on FMD in this process. This may help to protect the health of FMD. Combined with the results of software prediction, we finally proposed a possible mechanism for the complex process of musk secretion in FMD with a view to providing ideas for further studies.

This study aims to investigate the influence of topical estrogen management in postmenopausal patients who had undergone CO2 laser ablation for vaginal squamous intraepithelial lesions (SILs). The clinical data of 211 postmenopausal women with vaginal SILs were reviewed. Patients were divided into two groups by 2-month different management: Group 1 (intervention group): patients were treated with estrogen cream 0.5 g every other day and Group 2 (control group): no topical agent was used for the treatment of patients. In low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (LSILs), the response rates for patients in the intervention group and the control group were 49.1% (27/55) and 54.2% (16/48), respectively; human papillomavirus (HPV) status turned negative in 12 (12/38, 31.6%) patients of the intervention group and in 15 (15/35, 42.9%) patients of the control group. In high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions (HSILs), the response rates for patients in the intervention group and the control group were 72.4% (42/58) and 78.0% (39/50), respectively, nearly 1.5 times higher than those of the LSIL patients; 22 (22/54, 40.7%) patients of the intervention groups and 12 (12/46, 26.1%) patients of the control group cleared the HPV infection. In postmenopausal patients, local use of estrogen cream improves the recognition of lesions and is conducive to precision medicine.

Pterostilbene has been found to be an active scaffold with anti-breast cancer (BC) action. In this study, fourteen pterostilbene-tethered analogues (2A-2N) were prepared and screened in vitro against MDA-MB-231 and MCF-7 cells. Meanwhile, their structures were characterized using 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, and HRMS (ESI) spectroscopy techniques. Among them, analogue 2L displayed the most potent anti-proliferation effect on MDA-MB-231 (IC50 = 10.39 µM) and MCF-7 cells (IC50 = 11.73 µM). Furthermore, the meaningful structure-activity relationships suggested that the introduction of a saturated six-membered nitrogen heterocyclic ring into the side chain favored anti-BC capacity. Biological observations indicated that 2L could cause the typical morphological changes in apoptosis, namely an increase in reactive oxygen species level and a loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in BC cells. Importantly, 2L could induce mitochondrial-mediated apoptosis by regulating the expression of caspase-related proteins. Consistent with the results of our in vitro study, 2L apparently inhibited tumor growth in MDA-MB-231 xenograft mice without obvious toxicity. These findings revealed that 2L is expected to be a promising anti-BC lead compound that merits further investigations.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop and describe a novel surgical procedure that involves hysteroscopic fenestration with precise incision of the complete uterine septum and double cervix preservation after magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation in patients and to evaluate its efficacy. DESIGN: A prospective consecutive clinical study. SETTING: A university teaching hospital. PATIENTS: Twenty-four patients with complete septate uterus and double cervix. INTERVENTIONS: Three-dimensional reconstruction of uterus was performed with pelvic MRI and three-dimensional SPACE sequence scanning. Hysteroscopic fenestration with precise incision of the cavity septum and double cervix preservation was performed in patients. Three months after operation, follow-up pelvic MRI and second-look hysteroscopy were performed conventionally. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Operating time, blood loss, operative complications, MRI and hysteroscopic changes of uterus, symptoms improvement, and reproductive outcomes were assessed. The surgery was successfully completed without any intraoperative complications in all patients. Operating time was 21.71 ± 8.28 minutes (range, 10-40 minutes) and blood loss was 9.92 ± 7.14 mL (range, 5-30 mL). Postoperative MRI showed the uterine anteroposterior diameter (3.66 cm vs 3.92 cm; p <.05) was increased. Postoperative MRI and the second-look hysteroscopy showed the cavity shape and uterine volume were expanded to the normal. Symptoms of dysmenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding, and dyspareunia were ameliorated after the surgery in 70% of patients (7 of 10), 60% of patients (3 of 5), and 1 patient, respectively. The preoperative spontaneous abortion rate was 80% (4 of 5) and the postoperative spontaneous abortion rate was 11.11% (1 of 9). After the surgery, there were 2 ongoing pregnancies and 6 pregnancies ended in term births. Two live births were delivered by cesarean section and 4 by vaginal delivery without cervical incompetence during pregnancy. CONCLUSIONS: Hysteroscopic fenestration with precise incision of the uterine septum and double cervix preservation is an effective surgical procedure.

Different Sn/H-zeolite (ß, MOR, SSZ-13, FER, and Y zeolite) catalysts are prepared with the improved impregnation method. The effects of reaction temperature and the composition of the reaction gas (ammonia, oxygen, and ethane) on the catalytic reaction are investigated. Adjusting the fraction of ammonia and/or ethane in the reaction gas can effectively strengthen the ethane dehydrogenation (ED) route and ethylamine dehydrogenation (EA) route and inhibit the ethylene peroxidation (EO) route, whereas the adjustment of oxygen cannot effectively promote acetonitrile formation because it cannot avoid enhancing the EO route. By comparing the acetonitrile yields on different Sn/H-zeolite catalysts at 600 °C, it is revealed that the ammonia pool effect, the residual Brönsted acid in the zeolite, and the Sn-Lewis acid synergistically catalyze ethane ammoxidation. Moreover, a higher L/B ratio of the Sn/H zeolite is beneficial to the improvement of acetonitrile yield. With a certain application potential, the Sn/H-FER-zeolite catalyst shows an ethane conversion of 35.2% and an acetonitrile yield of 22.9% at 600 °C; although a similar catalytic performance was observed on the best Co-zeolite catalyst in literature, the Sn/H-FER-zeolite catalyst is more selective to ethene and CO than the Co catalyst. In addition, the selectivity to CO2 is less than 2% of that on the Sn-zeolite catalyst. This may be attributed to the special 2D topology and pore/channel system of the FER zeolite, which guarantee an ideal synergistic effect of the ammonia pool, the residual Brönsted acid in the zeolite, and the Sn-Lewis acid for the Sn/H-FER-catalyzed ethane ammoxidation reaction.

ABSTRACT

To probe into the changes and significance of serum acetylcholine receptor antibody (AchR-Ab) and citric acid extractive antibody (CAE-Ab) in patients with thymoma after thoracoscopic surgery (TS). The data of 50 patients with thymoma receiving TS in our hospital from February 2017 to February 2021 were selected for retrospective analysis. Serological testing was performed before and after surgery to determine serum AchR-Ab and CAE-Ab levels, the therapeutic effect was evaluated and the trend of serum AchR-Ab and CAE-Ab changes and their meanings were analyzed. Among 50 patients with thymoma after TS, 15 (30.0%) were in remission, 25 (50.0%) had improvement and 10 (20.0%) had no response to treatment. After treatment, the serum AchR-Ab and CAE-Ab levels of patients, which were remarkably lower than those before treatment (P < 0.001), were remarkably lower in the remission group than in the improvement group (P < 0.001) and remarkably lower in the improvement group than in the ineffective group (P < 0.001). The ordinal logistic regression analysis concluded that the levels of AchR-Ab and CAE-Ab were related to therapeutic effect, i.e. the lower the serum AchR-Ab and CAE-Ab levels, the better the therapeutic effect. TS can reduce the serum AchR-Ab and CAE-Ab levels in patients with thymoma, and serum AchR-Ab and CAE-Ab levels can reflect the therapeutic effect, providing reference value.

ABSTRACT

Previous studies have associated broadband with innovation, but most of them have focused on broadband access or broadband penetration rate rather than broadband speed. However, with the increase in the global broadband penetration rate, network speed is becoming a more important aspect of broadband development. Using a fixed effect model based on panel data from 274 cities in China from 2016 to 2018, we explore the impact of broadband speed on innovation and further validate the relationship by instrumental variable estimation and a series of robustness tests. The main findings are as follows: First, broadband speed significantly promotes patenting, and this effect is greater than the increase in broadband penetration rate. Second, the impact of broadband speed on promoting innovation is more substantial in cities with higher Internet penetration, GDP per capita, science and technology investment, and foreign direct investment. Third, broadband speed could promote innovation by facilitating patenting cooperation among firms. Fourth, we find no evidence of a diminishing marginal effect of broadband speed in this setting. This study has significant practical implications for emerging countries to encourage innovation by increasing broadband speed.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Myocardial first-pass perfusion (FPP) imaging is a useful cardiac MRI method for the diagnosis of coronary artery disease. However, conventional 2D multislice FPP acquisitions usually have gaps between myocardium slices, which limits the overall assessment of myocardial ischemia. PURPOSE: To increase the anatomic coverage of myocardial FPP imaging at 3 T by implementing both autocalibrated multiband (MB) acquisition and k-t space acceleration with compress sensing (CS) reconstruction, without the need for additional reference scans. STUDY TYPE: Phantom and prospective human studies. PHANTOM/SUBJECTS: A T1MES (T1 Mapping and ECV Standardization in cardiovascular magnetic resonance) phantom and 20 subjects (12 healthy subjects and 8 patients, 10 males, age 42 ± 16 years). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A 3 T/saturation recovery prepared gradient echo sequence with contrast administration. ASSESSMENT: Phantom experiments were performed to compare the performance of autocalibrated MB-FPP with k-t acceleration using slice-GRAPPA and CS reconstructions. In vivo experiments were performed to compare the performance of conventional FPP (2.5× acceleration) with autocalibrated MB + CS-FPP (6× acceleration). In phantom experiments, the error maps were calculated. In in vivo experiments, the contrast ratio (CR) and blurring were quantitatively measured, while image quality, perceived signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and artifact level were qualitatively graded by three cardiologists on a 4-point scale. STATISTICAL TESTS: Wilcoxon signed-rank test, paired t-test. A P value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In phantom experiments, residual artifact was reduced using the MB + CS-FPP reconstruction method compared with using the MB + slice-GRAPPA reconstruction method. In in vivo experiments, the proposed autocalibrated MB + CS-FPP method demonstrated significantly higher CR (3.52 ± 0.78 vs 2.91 ± 0.81) and had significantly better perceived SNR (2.69 ± 0.29 vs 2.48 ± 0.31) compared to the conventional sequence. Compared with conventional FPP, MB + CS-FPP doubled the spatial coverage (MB + CS-FPP vs conventional FPP) without compromising the image quality (2.69 ± 0.26 vs 2.60 ± 0.30) or increasing the artifact level (2.60 ± 0.26 vs 2.52 ± 0.31). CONCLUSION: Autocalibrated MB + CS-FPP improved the myocardial coverage and achieved comparable image quality with the same spatial resolution and scan time as conventional FPP and is a promising technique for clinical myocardial perfusion imaging. BACKGROUND: Regular monitoring of static lacunar infarction (SLI) lesions plays an important role in preventing disease development and managing prognosis. Magnetic resonance imaging is one method used to monitor SLI lesions. PURPOSE: To evaluate the image quality of the T2 fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (T2-FLAIR) sequence using artificial intelligence-assisted compressed sensing (ACS) in detecting SLI lesions and assess its clinical applicability. METHODS: A total of 42 patients were prospectively enrolled and scanned by T2-FLAIR. Two independent readers reviewed the images acquired with accelerated modes 1D (acceleration factor 2) and ACS (acceleration factors 2, 3, and 4). The overall image quality and lesion image quality were analyzed, as were signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and number of lesions between groups. RESULTS: The subjective assessment of overall brain image quality and lesion image quality was consistent between the two readers. The lesion display quality and the overall image quality were better with the traditional 1D acceleration method than with the ACS accelerated method. There was no significant difference in the SNR of the lacunar infarction in the images between the groups. The CNR of the images with the 1D acceleration mode was significantly lower than that of images with the ACS acceleration mode. Images with the 1D, ACS2, and ACS3 acceleration modes showed no significant differences in terms of detecting lesions but scan time can be reduced by 40% (1D vs. ACS3). CONCLUSION: ACS acceleration mode can greatly reduce the scan time. In addition, the images have good SNR, high CNR, and strong SLI lesion detection ability.

ABSTRACT

Cu-based and Fe-based zeolites are promising catalysts for NH3-SCR due to their high catalytic activity, wide temperature window and good hydrothermal stability, while the detailed investigation of NH3-SCR mechanism should be based on the accurate determination of active metal sites. This review systematically summarizes the qualitative and quantitative determination of metal active sites in Cu-based or Fe-based zeolites for NH3-SCR reactions based on advanced characterization methods such as UV-vis absorption (UV-vis), temperature-programmed reduction with H2 (H2-TPR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (XAFS), Infrared spectroscopy (IR), Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), Mössbauer spectroscopy and DFT calculations. The application and limitations of different characterization methods are also discussed to provide insights for further study of the NH3-SCR reaction mechanism over metal-based zeolites.

Responsive dual-structured emulsions and gel emulsions have attracted more and more attention due to their complex microstructures, on-demand responsive properties, and controlled release of active cargoes. In this work, the effect of monoglyceride (MG)-based oil phase structuring on the formation and stability, structural properties, and thermoresponsive and cargo release behavior of gel emulsions stabilized by glycyrrhizic acid (GA) nanofibrils were investigated. Owing to the formation of GA fibrillar networks in the aqueous phase and MG crystalline networks in the oil phase, a stable dual-structured gel emulsion can be successfully developed. The microstructure of the dual-structured gel emulsions largely depended on the concentration of MG in the oil phase. At low MG concentrations (1-2 wt%), the larger formed and lamellar MG crystals may pierce the interfacial fibrillar film, inducing the formation of partially coalesced droplets. In contrast, at high MG concentrations (4 wt% or above), the smaller MG crystals with enhanced interfacial activity can lead to the formation of a bilayer shell of GA nanofibrils and MG crystals, thus efficiently inhibiting the interfacial film damage and forming a jamming structure with homogeneously distributed small droplets. Compared to pure GA nanofibril gel emulsions, the GA-MG dual-structured gel emulsions showed significantly improved mechanical performance as well as good thermoresponsive behavior. Moreover, these stable GA-MG gel emulsions can be used as food-grade delivery vehicles for encapsulating and protecting hydrophobic and hydrophilic bioactive cargoes. They also have great potential as novel and efficient aroma delivery systems showing highly controlled volatile release. The dual-structured emulsion strategy is expected to broaden the applications of natural saponin GA-based gel emulsions in the food, pharmaceutical, and personal care industries.
