ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are under great pressure and experience discrimination in their daily lives, which affects their family quality of life (FQOL). OBJECTIVE: METHODS: A total of 237 parents of children with ASD were recruited in a university-affiliated hospital in Guangzhou, China, from October 2020 to April 2021 by convenience sampling. The Affiliate Stigma Scale, Parenting Sense of Competence Scale and Beach Center Family Quality of Life Scale were employed for data collection. RESULTS: The results showed that affiliate stigma negatively predicts total FQOL and the dimensions of FQOL through both a direct effect and an indirect effect through parenting self-efficacy. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that affiliate stigma is an important predictor of FQOL, and interventions to reduce affiliate stigma and strengthen parenting self-efficacy might be effective in improving FQOL in the parents of children with ASD.

ABSTRACT

It is essential for the widespread application of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) to investigate low-cost, extremely active, and long-lasting oxygen reduction catalysts. Initial performance of PGM-free metal-nitrogen-carbon (M-N-C) catalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) has advanced significantly, particularly for Fe-N-C-based catalysts. However, the insufficient stability of M-N-C catalysts still impedes their use in practical fuel cells. In this review, we focus on the understanding of the structure-stability relationship of M-N-C ORR catalysts and summarize valuable guidance for the rational design of durable M-N-C catalysts. In the first section of this review, we discuss the inherent degrading mechanisms of M-N-C catalysts, such as carbon corrosion, demetallation, H2 O2 attack, etc. As we gain a thorough comprehension of these deterioration mechanisms, we shift our attention to the investigation of strategies that can mitigate catalyst deterioration and increase its stability. These strategies include enhancing the anti-oxidation of carbon, fortifying M-N bonds, and maximizing the effectiveness of free radical scavengers. This review offers a prospective view on the enhancement of the stability of non-noble metal catalysts.

ABSTRACT

Improving the quality of family life (FQoL) is one of the ultimate goals for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) intervention, and parenting self-efficacy and social support are critical for the well-being of families. However, longitudinal studies focusing on FQoL and its predictors for families of children with ASD are scarce. This study aims to describe the characteristics of FQoL among parents of children newly diagnosed with ASD at two waves (newly diagnosed and diagnosed after one year) and to explore the predictors of FQoL at two waves. It was conducted at a tertiary hospital in Guangzhou, China. A total of 156 parents and their children were included in Wave 1, followed up with 110 in Wave 2 after 1 year. The overall satisfaction of FQoL improved (t = -2.128, p < 0.05), while satisfaction with physical/material well-being decreased (t = 5.972, p < 0.01). Additionally, the overall importance rating of FQoL improved but did not have statistical significance (p > 0.05). Parents with higher parenting self-efficacy (ß = 0.716, P < 0.01), and more subjective social support (ß = 1.127, p < 0.001) reported higher satisfaction with FQoL, and those with better social support utilization (ß = 1.066, p < 0.05) reported higher importance for FQoL. FQoL needs to be improved in the early stage of ASD diagnosis, and parental self-efficacy and social support can serve as the intervention targets.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma responds poorly to immune checkpoint inhibitors, such as PD-1 inhibitors, primarily due to the low infiltration capacity of TILs in the TME. Abnormal vasculature is an important factor which limiting the infiltration of TILs. According to recent research, targeting ELTD1 expression may improve TILs delivery to reverse immunosuppression and boost tumor responses to immunotherapy. Research has demonstrated that Tanshinone IIA (TSA) improves blood vessel normalization, but the precise mechanism is yet unknown. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to investigate the molecular processes for TSA's pro-vascular normalization of HCC in vitro and in vivo. METHODS: We established a mouse H22-luc in situ liver tumor model to evaluate the role of TSA vascular normalization and the immunosuppressive microenvironment. The role of ELTD1 in vascular and immune crosstalk was evaluated by bioinformatic analysis of the TCGA database. By creating a transwell co-culture cell model, the effects of TSA on enhancing tumor endothelial cell activities and ELTD1 intervention were evaluated. RESULTS: We investigated the effect of Tanshinone IIA (TSA), a major component of Salvia miltiorrhiza Bge., on the normalization of vasculature in situ HCC models. Our results demonstrated that TSA elicited vascular normalization in a hepatocellular carcinoma model in situ. In addition, the combination of TSA with anti-PD-1 significantly inhibited tumor development due to increased infiltration of immune cells in the tumor. Mechanistically, we demonstrated that TSA improved the immunosuppressive microenvironment by inhibiting tumor growth by suppressing ELTD1 expression, inhibiting downstream JAK1 and JAK2, promoting the expression of ZO-1, occlaudin, Claudin 5, and Col IV, and promoting vascular integrity and perfusion in situ. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals a new mechanism between TSA and ELTD1 for vascular normalization, suggesting that therapeutic or pharmacological intervention with ELTD1 may enhance the efficacy of PD-1 inhibitors in HCC.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Detection and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are prerequisites for early interventions. However, few studies focused on this topic. AIM: This study aims to characterize the timing from symptom detection to intervention in children with ASD and identify predictors of age at ASD diagnosis, presence of intervention, and the time lag between detection and diagnosis. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 303 parents (111 fathers and 192 mothers, 21-54 years) of children with ASD in Guangzhou, China. OUTCOMES AND RESULTS: The median time from symptom observation to the first doctor visit was 3 months, while the time to ASD diagnosis averaged 6 months. Most children (76.24 %) were diagnosed within one year after detection, and 25.58 % had no intervention after diagnosis. Predictors of earlier ASD diagnosis included ASD-related symptoms identified at an older age, less serious symptoms, and initial symptoms with atypical motor development and sensory anomalies. ASD-related symptoms observed at an older age, initial symptoms with social deficits, sensory anomalies, and without language impairment, primary caregivers other than parents, families with lower income, and less social support utilization increased the odds of a time lag between detection and diagnosis. Children with fathers having lower education were less likely to receive interventions. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Earlier ASD identification and intervention might be facilitated by health education on typical symptoms of ASD for parents with young children and incorporating ASD screening during routine health examinations for children. For children whose primary caregivers are not their parents and from lower-income families, additional support may be required for timely diagnosis after reporting ASD-related symptoms. Moreover, more intervention supports are expected for children whose fathers have lower education levels. Helping families take full advantage of support is also important for early diagnosis and intervention.

AIMS: The aims of the study were to describe coping strategies in parents of children with autism spectrum disorder at the early stage of diagnosis and to examine the predictive effects of parenting confidence and social support on coping strategies. DESIGN: A descriptive cross-sectional study. METHODS: A convenience sample of 193 parents of children newly diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in Guangzhou, China, were included from October 2020 to January 2021. The Simplified Coping Style Questionnaire, Parenting Sense of Competence Scale and Social Support Rating Scale were employed for data collection. Multiple hierarchical regression analyses examined the relationship between coping strategies and the independent variables. RESULTS: The mean positive coping strategies score was higher than the negative coping strategies score. Parenting efficacy, subjective support and support utilization predicted positive coping strategies, and parenting satisfaction was a protective factor against negative coping strategies. CONCLUSION: Parents tend to engage in positive coping at the early stage of diagnosis. Improving parenting confidence and social support might help parents adopt positive coping strategies and prevent negative coping. IMPACT: More effective and long-term support for families of children with autism spectrum disorder is expected. Interventions should be focused on enhancing parenting satisfaction and efficacy to employ positive coping strategies and decrease negative coping. REPORTING METHOD: We adhered to EQUATOR guidelines and reported results based on STROBE guidelines. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public involvement.

ABSTRACT

The high cost and poor reliability of cathodic electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which requires significant amounts of expensive and scarce platinum, obstructs the broad applications of proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The principles of ORR and the reasons for the poor stability of Pt-based catalysts are reviewed. Moreover, this paper discusses and categorizes the strategies for enhancing the stability of Pt-based catalysts in fuel cells. More importantly, it highlights the recent progress of Pt-based stability toward ORR, including surface-doping, intermetallic structures, 1D/2D structures, rational design of support, etc. Finally, for atomic-level in-depth information on ORR catalysts in fuel cells, potential perspectives are suggested, such as large-scale preparation, advanced interpretation techniques, and advanced simulation. This review aims to provide valuable insights into the fundamental science and technical engineering for practical Pt-based ORR electrocatalysts in fuel cells.

ABSTRACT

Background: In recent years, parent-mediated intervention for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has increased. Therefore, implementing effective parent training programs for parents of children with autism is of paramount importance, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. However, little is known about the status of and gaps in parents' knowledge on ASD, which may hinder the development of valid parental training programs. Herein, we aimed at exploring the status of Chinese parents' knowledge, attitude and behavior toward ASD, and potential factors affecting the acquisition of correct knowledge. Methods: This study used a self-designed parental knowledge questionnaire of autism (PKQA) comprising 20 questions alongside another questionnaire comprising additional 17 questions covering the aspects of family demographics, attitudes, and behaviors of parents. In total, we included 394 parents who visited the outpatient department of the Child's Development and Behavior Center of the Third Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-Sen University between December 2018 and May 2019, with their children meeting the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) diagnostic criteria for ASD. Results: The median knowledge score in the PKQA was 15 [interquartile range (IQR), 13-17]. Advanced paternal age and longer time interval from diagnosis to enrolling into the parent training program were associated with a lower total knowledge score (all P<0.001). Higher maternal education attainment, higher family income, child being currently under intervention, and family members sharing a common perception of the diagnosis were associated with a higher total knowledge score (all P<0.01). Reading autism-related books (P<0.001) or attending professional lectures (P=0.019) were also associated with a higher total knowledge score. Conclusions: Taken together, this study revealed that family demographics and parents' attitudes and behaviors toward ASD may significantly influence their knowledge about autism, suggesting the need for promoting more targeted parental skills training programs.

ABSTRACT

Aiming to overcome both the structural and commercial limitations of flexible thermoelectric power generators, an efficient room-temperature aqueous selenization reaction that can be completed in air within less than 1 min, to directly fabricate thin ß-Ag2 Se films consisting of perfectly crystalline and large columnar grains with both in-plane randomness and out-of-plane [201] preferred orientation, is designed. A high power factor (PF) of 2590 ± 414 µW m-1 K-2 and a figure-of-merit (zT) of 1.2 ± 0.42 are obtained from a sample with a thickness of ≈1 µm. The maximum output power density of the best 4-leg thermoelectric generator sample reach 27.6 ± 1.95 and 124 ± 8.78 W m-2 at room temperature with 30 and 60 K temperature differences, respectively, which may be useful in future flexible thermoelectric devices.

ABSTRACT

Adaptations of ciliates to hypoxic environments have arisen independently several times. Studies on mitochondrion-related organelle (MRO) metabolisms from distinct anaerobic ciliate groups provide evidence for understanding the transitions from mitochondria to MROs within eukaryotes. To deepen our knowledge about the evolutionary patterns of ciliate anaerobiosis, mass-culture and single-cell transcriptomes of two anaerobic species, Metopus laminarius (class Armophorea) and Plagiopyla cf. narasimhamurtii (class Plagiopylea), were sequenced and their MRO metabolic maps were compared. In addition, we carried out comparisons using publicly available predicted MRO proteomes from other ciliate classes (i.e., Armophorea, Litostomatea, Muranotrichea, Oligohymenophorea, Parablepharismea and Plagiopylea). We found that single-cell transcriptomes were similarly comparable to their mass-culture counterparts in predicting MRO metabolic pathways of ciliates. The patterns of the components of the MRO metabolic pathways might be divergent among anaerobic ciliates, even among closely related species. Notably, our findings indicate the existence of group-specific functional relics of electron transport chains (ETCs). Detailed group-specific ETC functional patterns are as follows: full oxidative phosphorylation in Oligohymenophorea and Muranotrichea; only electron-transfer machinery in Armophorea; either of these functional types in Parablepharismea; and ETC functional absence in Litostomatea and Plagiopylea. These findings suggest that adaptation of ciliates to anaerobic conditions is group-specific and has occurred multiple times. Our results also show the potential and the limitations of detecting ciliate MRO proteins using single-cell transcriptomes and improve the understanding of the multiple transitions from mitochondria to MROs within ciliates. OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to examine the posttraumatic growth (PTG) of parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and the association among family function, mental resilience and PTG. DESIGN AND METHODS: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 205 parents of children with ASD in the clinical department of a university-affiliated hospital in Guangzhou from January to October 2019. The Posttraumatic Growth Inventory, Family Assessment Device, and Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale were employed for data collection. RESULTS: The mean PTG score of parents was 59.56±18.46; and 24.63%, 43.84%, and 32.51% of parents exhibited a high level, moderate level and low level, respectively, of PTG. The problem-solving dimension of family function (p = 0.005) and the strength dimension of mental resilience (p ≤0.001) were positively related to PTG. CONCLUSIONS: Parents of children with ASD experienced moderate PTG overall. The problem-solving dimension of family function and the strength dimension of mental resilience were significant predictors of PTG. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS: Interventions to improve family function and the mental resilience of parents with ASD children could contribute to improving the PTG of parents.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence and features of ocular allergy (OA) and comorbidities among school children in Shanghai, China. METHODS: This was a population-based cross-sectional study. Each participant completed an ISAAC-based questionnaire. The prevalence of OA symptoms, allergic rhinitis (AR) asthma, atopic dermatitis (AD), and sensitization to mites, pollen, and food was analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 724 and 942 completed questionnaires from the 7-9-year-old (young group) and the 12-14-year-old (teen group) groups were analyzed, respectively. The overall prevalence of OA symptoms was 28%. However, more young students (10.6%) reported mild to severe daily life interference caused by OA than the teens (5.7%). The young group had higher prevalence of diagnosed allergic conjunctivitis (10.2%). The overall prevalence of AR symptom, diagnosed asthma, and diagnosed AD was 40.4%, 11.6%, and 16.7%, respectively. Young children had higher prevalence of diagnosed AR and AD than the teens. There were gender associated differences in the prevalence of AR and asthma among young children, but not among the teens. The comorbidities associated with OA was also analyzed. Sensitization to mites, food, and pollen was associated with higher prevalence of allergic conditions. CONCLUSIONS: OA together with other allergic conditions affected a significant number of children in Shanghai.
