ABSTRACT

As one of the key materials used in the civil engineering industry, concrete has a global annual consumption of approximately 10 billion tons. Cement and fine aggregate are the main raw materials of concrete, and their production causes certain harm to the environment. As one of the countries with the largest production of industrial solid waste, China needs to handle solid waste properly. Researchers have proposed to use them as raw materials for concrete. In this paper, the effects of different lithium slag (LS) contents (0%, 10%, 20%, 40%) and different substitution rates of recycled fine aggregates (RFA) (0%, 10%, 20%, 30%) on the axial compressive strength and stress-strain curve of concrete are discussed. The results show that the axial compressive strength, elastic modulus, and peak strain of concrete can increase first and then decrease when LS is added, and the optimal is reached when the LS content is 20%. With the increase of the substitution rate of RFA, the axial compressive strength and elastic modulus of concrete decrease, but the peak strain increases. The appropriate amount of LS can make up for the mechanical defects caused by the addition of RFA to concrete. Based on the test data, the stress-strain curve relationship of lithium slag recycled fine aggregate concrete is proposed, which has a high degree of agreement compared with the test results, which can provide a reference for practical engineering applications. In this study, LS and RFA are innovatively applied to concrete, which provides a new way for the harmless utilization of solid waste and is of great significance for the control of environmental pollution and resource reuse.

ABSTRACT

ALT is one of the most sensitive biochemical indexes to reflect liver injury. It is generally believed that hepatitis B virus (HBV) infected patients with normal ALT levels are in either immune tolerance or low replication stage of the natural history of hepatitis B, and there is no or only mild inflammation in liver tissue, so antiviral therapy is not recommended. However, chronic HBV-infected patients with normal ALT levels are not always in a stable state. A considerable number of patients will develop active hepatitis or occult progress to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. Therefore, whether antiviral therapy should be recommended for chronic HBV infection with normal ALT level has been a hot topic in clinical practice. In this paper, the definition of immune tolerance, the relationship between ALT and liver inflammation, and the benefits of antiviral therapy were reviewed, and we hope it will be helpful for clinicians to have a deeper understanding of whether antiviral therapy should be considered for chronic HBV infection with normal ALT.

ABSTRACT

To evaluate the role of ghrelin in cardiac fibrosis after myocardial infarction (MI) and to investigate the underlying mechanisms of ghrelin-regulated Nrf2/NADPH/ROS pathway-mediated cardioprotection, the profile of Nrf2, fibrosis markers, and oxidative stress markers were characterized in a rat model of MI and Angiotensin II (Ang II)-stimulated cardiac fibroblasts (CFs). The effects of ghrelin on cardiac function, fibrosis and oxidative stress were investigated after MI in vivo. The role of ghrelin in CF migration and proliferation was evaluated in Ang II-stimulated CFs in vitro. Inhibition of ghrelin receptors using the antagonist, d-Lys3-GHRP-6, in addition to ghrelin was employed in MI and CFs to investigate the direct effect of ghrelin on cardiac fibrosis. Loss function of Nrf2 in CFs was performed to investigate the effect of ghrelin-regulated Nrf2 on oxidative stress and cardiac fibrosis. Ghrelin improved the post-MI cardiac function and reduced cardiac fibrosis. This phenotype is associated with the upregulation of Nrf2 and downregulation of fibrotic proteins, NADPH oxidase and ROS production. In line with in vivo findings, ghrelin attenuated Ang II-stimulated CF migration, proliferation, and oxidative stress in vitro. Inhibition of the ghrelin receptor or knockdown of Nrf2 abolished the beneficial effects of ghrelin on MI or Ang II-stimulated cardiac fibroblasts. In conclusion, ghrelin ameliorates post-MI and Ang II-induced cardiac fibrosis by activating Nrf2, which in turn inhibits the NADPH/ROS pathway.

ABSTRACT

Several new, pangenotypic direct-acting antiviral agents (DAAs) have been approved, may reduce the need for genotyping to guide therapy decisions for patients with chronic hepatitis C (CHC).This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and safety of Sofosbuvir (SOF)-based pangenotypic DAAs therapy for CHC patients without genotype (GT determination in the real-world practice.This retrospective cohort study included treatment-naïve CHC patients without GT determination, who received SOF-based DAAs therapy, including 400 mg SOF plus 60 mg daclatasvir (DCV) daily or 400 mg SOF plus 100 mg velpatasvir (VEL) daily for 12 or 24 weeks. Clinical and laboratory data, including sustained virologic response (SVR), were obtained at baseline, end of treatment (EOT), 12 weeks after EOT, and 48 weeks after EOT.A total of 95 CHC patients, including 30 (31.58%) had liver cirrhosis were enrolled. SVR rates after 12 weeks of treatment (SVR12) was 96.84% (92/95), including 96.20% (76/79) of patients receiving SOF plus DCV and 100% (16/16) of patients receiving SOF plus VEL. For 92 patients achieving an SVR12, no virological relapse was observed at 48 weeks after EOT. Furthermore, serum evaluation of liver fibrosis aspartate aminotransferase-to-platelet ratio index and Fibrosis-4 score were decreased significantly at EOT and 12 weeks after EOT, compared to pre-treatment values (both P < .05). Treatment was well-tolerated by our patients.SOF-based pangenotypic DAAs including SOF plus DCV and SOF plus VEL, were effective and safe for CHC patients without GT determination in this study. This may provide a potential simple strategy for CHC treatment without GT determination.

ABSTRACT

A novel bacterial strain designated as Rhodococcus pyridinivorans XB, capable of utilizing various endocrine disruptor phthalates or phthalic acid (PA) as sole source of carbon and energy, was isolated from activated sludge. Under the optimal culture conditions (pH 7.08, 30.4 °C, inoculum size (OD600 nm) of 0.6) obtained by response surface methodology, di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP, 200 mg/L) could be degraded by strain XB with a removal rate of 98% within 48 h. Under the observation of an atomic force microscope, it was confirmed that DEHP did not inhibit the growth of strain XB which might produce some extracellular polymeric substances as a response to DEHP stress, resulting in rapid degradation of DEHP. At initial concentrations of 50-800 mg/L DEHP, its degradation curves were well fitted with the first-order kinetic model, and the half-life of DEHP degradation varied from 5.44 to 23.5 h. The degradation intermediates of DEHP were identified by both GC-MS and high performance liquid chromatography-time of flight-mass spectrometry (HPLC-TOF-MS). Significant up-regulation was observed for the relative expression levels of genes (i.e., phthalate hydrolase, PA 3,4-dioxygenase, protocatechuate 3,4-α and 3,4-ß dioxygenase) involved in DEHP degradation determined by real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). A DEHP biodegradation pathway by strain XB was proposed based on the identified intermediates and the degrading genes. Bioaugmentation of DEHP-contaminated soils with strain XB could efficiently promote DEHP removal, offering great potential in bioremediation of DEHP-contaminated environment.

ABSTRACT

A 3-D numerical model, based on the Navier-Strokes equations and the RNG k-ε turbulence closure, for studying hydrodynamic drag on a swimmer with wave-making resistance taken into account is established. The volume of fluid method is employed to capture the undulation of the free surface. The simulation strategy is evaluated by comparison of the computed results with experimental data. The computed results are in good agreement with data from mannequin towing experiments. The effects of the swimmer's head position and gliding depth on the drag force at different velocities are then investigated. It is found that keeping the head aligned with the body is the optimal posture in streamlined gliding. Also wave-making resistance is significant within 0.3 m depth from the free surface.

ABSTRACT

A newly isolated strain Agromyces sp. MT-O could utilize various phthalates and efficiently degraded di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). Response surface methodology was successfully employed for the optimization of culture conditions including pH (7.2), temperature (29.6), and inoculum size (OD600 of 0.2), resulting in almost complete degradation of DEHP (200mgL(-1)) within 7days. At different initial concentrations (50-1000mgL(-1)), DEHP degradation curves were fitted well with the first-order kinetic model, and the half-life of DEHP degradation ranged from 0.83 to 2.92days. Meanwhile, the substrate inhibition model was used to describe the special degradation rate with qmax, Ks, and Ki of 0.6298day(-1), 86.78mgL(-1), and 714.3mgL(-1), respectively. The GC-MS analysis indicated that DEHP was degraded into mono-ethylhexyl phthalate and phthalate acid before its complete mineralization. Bioaugmentation of DEHP-contaminated soils with strain MT-O has greatly enhanced DEHP disappearance rate in soils, providing great potential for efficiently remediating DEHP-contaminated environment.

ABSTRACT

MicroRNAs are highly conserved non-coding RNAs that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level, and play pivotal roles in cancer development and progression. miR-100 has been reported to be significantly downregulated in a variety of cancers, including esophageal cancer. However, the role of miR-100 in human esophageal cancer has not been fully elucidated. We demonstrated that overexpression of miR-100 in esophageal cancer cells markedly inhibited cell proliferation, migration and invasion as well as tumor growth. We subsequently showed that CXCR7 is a direct target gene of miR-100. Our results indicated that miR-100 plays a tumor-suppressor role in esophageal cancer and suggest its potential application for esophageal cancer treatment.

ABSTRACT

The two-year hydrologic process, hydrochemistry, and a portion of deltaD, delta18O of both the surface water at the inlet and the groundwater at the outlet, were investigated to identify the spatial and temporal variations of hydrogeochemistry in the Qingmuguan karst groundwater system. Research results show that there are wet and dry periods in the groundwater system owing to the striking influence of seasonal rainfall. The evolution of the chemical compositions in the groundwater is significantly influenced by the water and rock interaction, anthropogenic activities and rainwater dilution. The variations of the chemical compositions in the groundwater exhibit obvious spatiality and temporality. The deltaD and delta18O of the surface water beneath the local Meteoric Water Line of Chonqing indicate that the surface water is strongly evaporated. Furthermore, the deltaD and delta18O of the surface water are more positive in the dry period than in the wet period, showing a distinct seasonal effect. The deltaD and delta18O of the groundwater are quite stable and much negative compared with those of the surface water, which suggests that the rainwater recharge the groundwater via two pathways, one directly through sinkholes and the other via the vadose zone.

ABSTRACT

With urbanization, groundwater in China has been widely polluted. Karst groundwater is important in southwest China, and would be difficult to recover once contaminated. NO3(-), PO4(3), NH4(+), total coliform, total E. coli and fecal coliform were chosen as indexes in the study of groundwater of Laolongdong Underground River System in Nanshan Mountain, Chongqing. After a few years of survey, the results showed that NO3(-), NH4(+) and PO4(3-) concentrations in the water were all above the nature value, especially NH4(+) and PO4(3-). The NO3(-) concentration of Guihuawan spring ranged from 19.78-68.55 mg x L(-1), in some months, above the recommended water quality guideline (50 mg x L(-1)) according to Standards for Drinking Water Quality set by World Health Organization. NH4(+) and PO4(3-) concentrations in Laolongdong underground river varied from 2.71-12.92 mg x L(-1) and 0.16-11.22 mg x L(-1). The NO3(-) concentration in Laolongdong underground river was lower than in karst spring; however, the concentrations of NH4(+) and PO4(3-) were higher than in the spring. It seemed that the NO3(-) concentration tended to decrease from 2008 to 2013 in the underground river caused by urbanization, reduction of farmland and reducing environment. However, waste water with a high PO4(3-) concentration led to an increasing trend in the PO4(3-) concentration in underground river. Microbial contamination was extremely serious, and even far exceeded class V of water quality standards of China. For example, the concentration of fecal coliform in the groundwater ranged from 3.4 x 10(4)-3.68 x 10(4) CFU x mL(-1). Because of the special hydrogeological structure, karst depressions, skylights and sinkholes can lead pollutants easily to the underground water. Agriculture activity, sewage from towns, enterprises and residential areas were the major sources of nitrogen, phosphorus and microbial contamination.

ABSTRACT

Chemical dynamics of Qingmuguan karst groundwater system were continuously monitored during the rainfall events. A series of high-resolution concentrations data on trace elements, such as barium, strontium, iron, manganese, aluminum, and other major elements were acquired. Correlation analysis and analysis of concentration curve were employed to identify the sources and migration path of the trace elements. And the formation process of trace elements in groundwater was discussed with the geological background of underground river basin. Research shows that barium and strontium derived from carbonate dissolution appeared to be stored in features such as fissures and pores. These two ions were recharged into the underground river by diffusion during precipitation, which resulted in small changes in the their concentration. However total iron, total manganese and aluminum derived from soil erosion varied relatively widely with strong response to rainfall, attributing to the migration of total iron and aluminum with overland flow to recharge the subterranean river directly via sinkholes while total manganese via soil-rock porous media. The results showed that concentrations of all the five trace elements were below 1 mg x L(-1), and the highest concentrations of total iron, total manganese and aluminum exceeded the limit of drinking water. To some extent, the concentrations of total iron and aluminum may be an indicator for soil erosion and water quality.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Effective assessing the prognosis of patients with end-stage liver disease is always challenging. This study aimed to investigate the accuracy of different models in predicting short-term prognosis of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV)-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated survival of a cohort of patients with at least 3-month follow up. The receiver-operating-characteristic curves (ROC) were drawn for Child-Turcotte-Pugh (CTP) classification, King's College Hospital (KCH) criteria, model for end-stage liver disease (MELD), MELD combined with serum sodium (Na) concentration (MELDNa), integrated MELD (iMELD) and logistic regression model (LRM). RESULTS: Of the 273 eligible patients, 152 patients (55.7%) died within 3-month follow up. In cirrhotic patients (n = 101), the AUCs of LRM (0.851), MELDNa (0.849), iMELD (0.845) and MELD (0.840) were all significantly higher than those of KCH criteria (0.642) and CTP (0.625) (all p < 0.05), while the differences among LRM, MELD, MELDNa and iMELD were not significant, and the most predictive cutoff value was 0.5176 for LRM, 30 for MELDNa, 47.87 for iMELD and 29 for MELD, respectively. In non-cirrhotic patients (n = 172), the AUC of LRM (0.897) was significantly higher than that of MELDNa (0.776), iMELD (0.768), MELD (0.758), KCH criteria (0.647) and CTP (0.629), respectively (all p < 0.05), and the most predictive cutoff value for LRM was -0.3264. CONCLUSIONS: LRM, MELD, MELDNa and iMELD are with similar accuracy in predicting the shortterm prognosis of HBV-ACLF patients with liver cirrhosis, while LRM is superior to MELD, MELDNa and iMELD in predicting the short-term prognosis of HBV-ACLF patients without liver cirrhosis.

BACKGROUND: Currently, whether or not there is visuospatial impairments in Chinese dyslexic children is still a matter of discussion. The relatively recent application of an eye-tracking paradigm may offer an opportunity to address this issue. In China, in comparison with reading studies, there have not been nearly as many eye movement studies dealing with nonreading tasks such as picture identification and whether Chinese children with dyslexia have a picture processing deficit is not clear. The purposes of the present study were to determine whether or not there is visuospatial impairments in Chinese dyslexic children. Moreover, we attempted to discuss whether or not the abnormal eye movement pattern that dyslexic subjects show during reading of text appropriate for their age is a consequence of their linguistic difficulties. METHODS: An eye-link II High-Speed Eye Tracker was used to track the series of eye-movement of 19 Chinese dyslexic children and 19 Chinese normal children. All of the subjects were presented with three pictures for this eye-tracking task and 6 relative eye-movement parameters, first fixation duration, average fixation duration, average saccade amplitude, mean saccade distance, fixation frequency and saccade frequency were recorded for analysis. RESULTS: Analyzing the relative parameter among three pictures, except for the fixation frequency and the saccade frequency, other eye-movement parameters were significantly different among the three pictures (P<0.05). Among the three pictures, the first fixation duration was longer, and the average fixation duration, the average saccade amplitude and the mean saccade distance were shorter from picture 2 to picture 3. Comparing all eye-movement parameter between the two groups, the scores of average saccade amplitude (P=0.017) and the mean saccade distance (P=0.02) were less in the dyslexia group than in the normal group (P<0.05), other parameters were the same in the two different groups (P>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The characteristics of the pictures can significantly influence the visuospatial cognitive processing capability of the Chinese children. There is a detectable disability for the Chinese dyslexic children in the visuospatial cognitive processing: their saccade amplitude and mean saccade distance are shorter, which may be interpreted as specific for their reading disability.

BACKGROUND: Children with nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD) usually manifest defective attention function. This study sought to investigate the neuropsychological characteristics of selective attention, such as attention control, working memory, and attention persistence of the frontal lobe in children with NLD. METHODS: Using the auditory detection test (ADT), Wisconsin card sorting test (WCST), and C-WISC, 27 children with NLD and 33 normal children in the control group were tested, and the results of C-WISC subtests were analyzed with factor analysis. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, the correct response rate in the auditory detection test in the NLD group was much lower (P < 0.01), and the number of incorrect responses was much higher (P < 0.01); NLD children also scored lower in WCST categories achieved (CA) and perseverative errors (PE) (P < 0.05). Factor analysis showed that perceptual organization (PO) related to visual space and freedom from distractibility (FD) relating to attention persistence in the NLD group were obviously lower than in the control group (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Children with NLD have attention control disorder and working memory disorder mainly in the frontal lobe. We believe that the disorder is particularly prominent in the right frontal lobe.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the neuropsychological characteristics of selective attention such as attention control, working memory and attention persistence of frontal lobe in children with nonverbal learning disabilities (NLD). METHODS: With Auditory Detection Test (ADT), Wisconsin Card Sorting Test (WCST) and C-WISC, 14 children with NLD and 23 controls were tested and the results of sub-tests of C-WISC were analyzed with factor analysis. ADT was mainly applied to test the ability of auditory discernment and the function of dominance lateralization in the cerebra; WCST was employed to test the function of working memory which was based on the frontal lobe, and, C-WISC, to test the intelligent structure and characteristics. RESULTS: Compared with control group, the correct response rate of ADT in NLD group was much lower (P < 0.01), and the number of incorrect response was much larger (P < 0.01). Children with NLD had deficits of auditory selective attention. Moreover, the number of categories achieved (CA) and perseverative error (PE) of WCST were much lower (P < 0.05), which indicated that children with NLD had the disorders of selective attention and performance function. Factor analysis showed that perceptual organization (PO) related to visual space and freedom from distractibility (FD) related to attention persistence in NLD group were obviously lower than those in control group (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). These findings further supported the above-mentioned results. CONCLUSIONS: Children with NLD had attention control disorder and working memory disorder mainly in frontal lobe; we suppose that the disorder in right frontal lobe was distinctive.
