ABSTRACT

Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly malignant and heterogeneous cancer with limited therapeutic options and prognosis prediction models. Here, we analyzed formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded (FFPE) samples of surgical resections by proteomic profiling, and stratified SCLC into three proteomic subtypes (S-I, S-II, and S-III) with distinct clinical outcomes and chemotherapy responses. The proteomic subtyping was an independent prognostic factor and performed better than current tumor-node-metastasis or Veterans Administration Lung Study Group staging methods. The subtyping results could be further validated using FFPE biopsy samples from an independent cohort, extending the analysis to both surgical and biopsy samples. The signatures of the S-II subtype in particular suggested potential benefits from immunotherapy. Differentially overexpressed proteins in S-III, the worst prognostic subtype, allowed us to nominate potential therapeutic targets, indicating that patient selection may bring new hope for previously failed clinical trials. Finally, analysis of an independent cohort of SCLC patients who had received immunotherapy validated the prediction that the S-II patients had better progression-free survival and overall survival after first-line immunotherapy. Collectively, our study provides the rationale for future clinical investigations to validate the current findings for more accurate prognosis prediction and precise treatments.

ABSTRACT

Heart transplantation offers life-saving treatment for patients with end-stage heart failure; however, ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) and subsequent immune responses remain significant challenges. Current therapies primarily target adaptive immunity, with limited options available for addressing IRI and innate immune activation. Although plant-derived vesicle-like nanoparticles show promise in managing diseases, their application in organ transplantation complications is unexplored. Here, this work develops a novel reactive oxygen species (ROS)-responsive multifunctional fusion extracellular nanovesicles carrying rapamycin (FNVs@RAPA) to address early IRI and Ly6C+Ly6G- inflammatory macrophage-mediated rejection in heart transplantation. The FNVs comprise Exocarpium Citri grandis-derived extracellular nanovesicles with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and mesenchymal stem cell membrane-derived nanovesicles expressing calreticulin with macrophage-targeting ability. A novel ROS-responsive bio-orthogonal chemistry approach facilitates the active targeting delivery of FNVs@RAPA to the heart graft site, effectively alleviating IRI and promoting the polarization of Ly6C+Ly6G- inflammatory macrophages toward an anti-inflammatory phenotype. Hence, FNVs@RAPA represents a promising therapeutic approach for mitigating early transplantation complications and immune rejection. The fusion-targeted delivery strategy offers superior heart graft site enrichment and macrophage-specific targeting, promising improved transplant outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Vaccination helps reduce the risk of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection in elderly individuals with major neurocognitive disorders (MNDs). However, some caregivers are hesitant to have their elderly family members with MNDs vaccinated against COVID-19. This study explored the factors influencing caregivers' intentions to vaccinate elderly family members with MNDs against COVID-19. A total of 232 caregivers of elderly family members with MNDs participated in this study. In this survey, data regarding COVID-19 vaccination acceptance, fear, side effects, family members' attitudes toward vaccination, mental health status, neuropsychiatric symptoms, and cognitive impairments were collected from the elderly participants with MNDs. The associations between these variables and the caregivers' intention to vaccinate their elderly family members with MNDs against COVID-19 were examined using a multivariable linear regression analysis model. The results revealed that caregivers' perceived familial support for vaccination, the perceived value of vaccination, and autonomy to vaccinate elder family members were positively correlated with caregivers' intention to vaccinate elderly family members with MNDs, whereas elderly family members' age was negatively correlated with caregiver intentions. This study demonstrated that caregiver factors (perceived familial support, value of vaccination, and autonomy) and elderly family members' age were correlated with caregiver intention. These factors should be considered in developing interventions to enhance caregivers' intentions to vaccinate their elderly family members with MNDs against COVID-19.

ABSTRACT

The MobileNetV3-based improved sine-cosine algorithm (ISCA-MobileNetV3) was combined with an artificial olfactory sensor (AOS) to address the redundancy in olfactory arrays, thereby achieving low-cost and high-precision detection of mycotoxin-contaminated maize. Specifically, volatile organic compounds of maize interacted with unoptimized AOS containing eight porphyrins and eight dye-attached nanocomposites to obtain the scent fingerprints for constructing the initial data set. The optimal decision model was MobileNetV3, with more than 98.5% classification accuracy, and its output training loss would be input into the optimizer ISCA. Remarkably, the number of olfactory arrays was reduced from 16 to 6 by ISCA-MobileNetV3 with about a 1% decrease in classification accuracy. Additionally, the developed system showed that each online evaluation was less than one second on average, demonstrating outstanding real-time performance for ensuring food safety. Therefore, AOS combined with ISCA-MobileNetV3 will encourage the development of an affordable and on-site platform for maize quality detection.

ABSTRACT

Although many cohort studies have reported that long-term exposure to particulate matter (PM) causes lung cancer, the molecular mechanisms underlying the PM-induced increases in lung cancer progression remain unclear. We applied the lung cancer cell line A549 (Parental; A549.Par) to PM for an extended period to establish a mimic PM-exposed lung cancer cell line, A549.PM. Our results indicate that A549.PM exhibits higher cell growth and proliferation abilities compared to A549.Par cells in vitro and in vivo. The RNA sequencing analysis found amphiregulin (AREG) plays a critical role in PM-induced cell proliferation. We observed that PM increases AREG-dependent lung cancer proliferation through glutamine metabolism. In addition, the EGFR/PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling pathway is involved in PM-induced solute carrier family A1 member 5 (SLC1A5) expression and glutamine metabolism. Our findings offer important insights into how lung cancer proliferation develops upon exposure to PM.

ABSTRACT

While surgical resection is the predominant clinical strategy in the treatment of melanoma, postoperative recurrence and undetectable metastasis are both pernicious drawbacks to this otherwise highly successful approach. Furthermore, the deep cavities result from tumor excision can leave long lasting wounds which are slow to heal and often leave visible scars. These unmet needs are addressed in the present work through the use of a multidimensional strategy, and also promotes wound healing and scar reduction. In the first phase, cell membrane-derived nanovesicles (NVs) are engineered to show PD-1 and dibenzocyclooctyne (DBCO). These are capable of reactivating T cells by blocking the PD-1/PD-L1 pathway. In the second phase, azido (N3) labeled mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are cultured into cell sheets using tissue engineering, then apply directly to surgical wounds to enhance tissue repair. Owing to the complementary association between DBCO and N3 groups, PD-1 NVs were accumulated at the site of excision. This strategy can inhibit postoperative tumor recurrence and metastasis, whilst also promoting wound healing and reducing scar formation. The results of this study set a precedent for a new and innovative multidimensional therapeutic strategy in the postoperative treatment of melanoma.

BACKGROUND: This survey study investigated the types of sources other than medical professionals (e.g., social media) that the caregivers of children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) use to acquire knowledge about ADHD and investigated the association between the use of such information sources and caregiver parenting stress and anxiety in Taiwan. METHODS: A total of 213 caregivers of children with ADHD participated in this study. The sources that the caregivers used to acquire knowledge about ADHD other than medical professionals were investigated. Caregiver parenting stress was assessed using the Parenting Stress Index, and caregiver anxiety was assessed using the Beck Anxiety Inventory. The associations of the types of sources used and total number of source use with caregiver parenting stress and anxiety were investigated using multivariate linear regression analysis. RESULTS: The most common source of knowledge other than medical professionals was teachers (55.4%), followed by social media (52.6%), traditional media (50.7%), friends (33.8%), caregivers of other children (21.1%), and family members (18.3%). The caregivers' mean total number of using sources of knowledge about ADHD other than medical professionals was 2.32. Acquiring knowledge about ADHD from social media was significantly associated with caregiver parenting stress. Additionally, acquiring knowledge about ADHD from caregivers of other children was significantly associated with caregiver parenting stress and anxiety, as was the frequency of using sources of knowledge about ADHD other than medical professionals. CONCLUSION: The caregivers of children with ADHD acquired knowledge about ADHD from multiple sources. Acquiring knowledge about ADHD from social media was significantly associated with caregiver parenting stress. The number of sources of knowledge about ADHD was significantly associated with caregiver parenting stress and anxiety.

ABSTRACT

Controlling the crystal facets of semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) has been proven as an effective approach to tune their physicochemical properties. However, the study on facet-engineering of metastable zinc blende CdS (zb-CdS) and its heterostructures is still not fully explored. In this study, the zb-CdS and Au@zb-CdS core-shell NCs with tunable terminating facets are controllably synthesized, and their photocatalytic performance for water splitting are evaluated. It is found that the {111} facets of the zb-CdS NCs display higher intrinsic activity than the {100} counterparts, which originates from these surfaces being much more efficient, facilitating electron transition to enhance the adsorption ability and the dissociation of the adsorbed water, as revealed by theoretical calculations. Moreover, the Au@zb-CdS core-shell NCs exhibit better photocatalytic performance than the zb-CdS NCs terminated with the same facets under visible light irradiation (≥400 nm), which is mainly ascribed to the accelerated electron separation at the interface, as demonstrated by femtosecond transient absorption (fs-TA) spectroscopy. Importantly, the quantum yield of plasmon-induced hot electron transfer quantified by fs-TA in the Au@zb-CdS core-shell octahedrons can be reached as high as 1.2% under 615 nm excitation, which is higher than that of the Au@zb-CdS core-shell cubes. This work unravels the face-dependent photocatalytic performance of the metastable semiconductor NCs via a combination of experiments and theoretical calculations, providing the understanding of the underlying mechanism of these photocatalysts.

ABSTRACT

Human bocavirus 1 (HBoV1) is a human parvovirus that causes lower respiratory tract infections in young children. It contains a single-stranded (ss) DNA genome of ~5.5 kb that encodes a small noncoding RNA of 140 nucleotides known as bocavirus-encoded small RNA (BocaSR), in addition to viral proteins. Here, we determined the secondary structure of BocaSR in vivo by using DMS-MaPseq. Our findings reveal that BocaSR undergoes N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification at multiple sites, which is critical for viral DNA replication in both dividing HEK293 cells and nondividing cells of the human airway epithelium. Mechanistically, we found that m6A-modified BocaSR serves as a mediator for recruiting Y-family DNA repair DNA polymerase (Pol) η and Pol κ likely through a direct interaction between BocaSR and the viral DNA replication origin at the right terminus of the viral genome. Thus, this report represents direct involvement of a viral small noncoding RNA in viral DNA replication through m6A modification.

ABSTRACT

Tacrolimus (TAC) has high pharmacokinetic (PK) variability during the early transplantation period. The relationships between whole-blood and intracellular TAC concentrations and clinical outcomes remain controversial. This study identifies the factors affecting the PK variability of TAC and characterizes the relationships between whole-blood and intracellular TAC concentrations. Data regarding whole-blood TAC concentrations of 1,787 samples from 215 renal transplant recipients (<90 days postoperative) across two centers and intracellular TAC concentrations (648 samples) digitized from previous studies were analyzed using nonlinear mixed-effects modeling. The effects of potential covariates were screened, and the distribution of whole-blood to intracellular TAC concentration ratios (RWB:IC) was estimated. The final model was evaluated using bootstrap, goodness of fit, and prediction-corrected visual predictive checks. The optimal dosing regimens and target ranges for each type of immune cell subsets were determined using Monte Carlo simulations. A two-compartment model adequately described the data, and the estimated mean TAC CL/F was 23.6 L·h-1 (relative standard error: 11.5 %). The hematocrit level, CYP3A5*3 carrier status, co-administration with Wuzhi capsules, and tapering prednisolone dose may contribute to the high variability of TAC PK variability during the early post-transplant period. The estimated RWB:IC of all TAC concentrations in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) was 4940, and inter-center variability of PBMCs was observed. The simulated TAC target range in PBMCs was 20.2-85.9 pg·million cells-1. Inter-center variability in intracellular concentrations should be taken into account in further analyses. TAC dosage adjustments can be guided based on PK/PD variability and simulated intracellular concentrations.

Egalitarian gender attitudes are linked to increased support for same-sex marriage, with previous studies mainly focusing on Western countries. Limited existing research from Asian countries often relied on non-representative, convenient samples. Taiwan, the first Asian country to legalize same-sex marriage in 2019, offers a valuable context. Since surveys before 2020 lacked questions on attitudes toward same-sex marriage, we utilized the 2020 PSFD data for a cross-sectional analysis. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the relationship between gender attitudes (assessed through six questions) and attitudes toward same-sex marriage, along with examining the moderation effects of socio-demographic variables. The results revealed significant associations between embracing egalitarian gender attitudes and increased support for same-sex marriage (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] ranged from 1.34 to 2.08, 95% CI = [1.15, 2.45]). Moderation analysis indicated that this connection appeared to be more pronounced among younger individuals, those who were not currently married, and those with higher educational attainment. Individuals who are older, less educated, or married and hold negative views on gender equality should be targeted for efforts to enhance their support for same-sex marriage. Advocating for gender equality aligns with principles of equality, nondiscrimination, and recognizing fundamental rights for all, irrespective of sexual orientation.

ABSTRACT

Psychological stress affects the neuroendocrine regulation, which modulates mental status and behaviors. Melatonin, a hormone synthesized primarily by the pineal gland, regulates many brain functions, including circadian rhythms, pain, sleep, and mood. Selective pharmacological melatonin agonist ramelteon has been clinically used to treat mood and sleep disorders. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric condition associated with severe trauma; it is generally triggered by traumatic events, which lead to severe anxiety and uncontrollable trauma recall. We recently reported that repeated social defeat stress (RSDS) may induce robust anxiety-like behaviors and social avoidance in mice. In the present study, we investigated whether melatonin receptor activation by melatonin and ramelteon regulates RSDS-induced behavioral changes. Melatonin treatment improved social avoidance and anxiety-like behaviors in RSDS mice. Moreover, treatment of the non-selective MT1/MT2 receptor agonist, ramelteon, markedly ameliorated RSDS-induced social avoidance and anxiety-like behaviors. Moreover, activating melatonin receptors also balanced the expression of monoamine oxidases, glucocorticoid receptors, and endogenous antioxidants in the hippocampus. Taken together, our findings indicate that the activation of both melatonin and ramelteon regulates RSDS-induced anxiety-like behaviors and PTSD symptoms. The current study also showed that the regulatory effects of neuroendocrine mechanisms and cognitive behaviors on melatonin receptor activation in repeated social defeat stress.

BACKGROUND: Higher functional connectivity within the default mode network (DMN) has been found in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of major depressive disorder (MDD). We used electroencephalogram (EEG) coherence as an index of functional connectivity to examine group differences in DMN between the MDD and healthy control (HC) groups during the resting state. METHODS: MDD patients with comorbid anxiety symptoms (n = 154) and healthy controls (n = 165) completed the questionnaires of depression, anxiety, and rumination. A 19-channel EEG recording was measured under resting state for all participants. EEG coherences of the delta, theta, alpha, beta, and high beta in the anterior DMN (aDMN), posterior DMN (pDMN), aDMN-pDMN, DMN-parahippocampal gyrus (PHG), and DMN-temporal gyrus were compared between the two groups. The correlations between rumination, anxiety, and DMN coherence were examined in the MDD group. RESULTS: (1) No difference was found in the delta, theta, alpha, and beta within the DMN brain regions between the two groups; the MDD group showed higher high beta coherence within DMN brain regions than the HC group. (2) Rumination was negatively correlated with theta coherence of aDMN, and positively correlated with beta coherence of aDMN and with alpha coherence of pDMN and DMN-PHG. (3) Anxiety was positively correlated with high beta coherence of aDMN, pDMN, and DMN-PHG. CONCLUSIONS: MDD patients with comorbid anxiety symptoms exhibited hypercoherence within the DMN brain regions. Hypercoherences were related to symptoms of rumination, and anxiety may be a biomarker for MDD patients with comorbid anxiety symptoms.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This study aimed to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices among anemia patients toward disease management. Methods: This web-based cross-sectional study was conducted between September and December 2023 at The First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang Chinese Medical University (Zhejiang Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine). A self-designed questionnaire was developed to collect demographic information of anemia patients, and assess their knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) toward disease management. Results: A total of 396 valid questionnaires were collected. The mean age of the participants was 57.44 ± 16.80 years, and 52.02% were female. The mean knowledge, attitudes, and practices scores were 11.47 ± 1.73 (possible range: 0-14), 27.32 ± 2.96 (possible range: 7-35), and 40.49 ± 6.06 (possible range: 10-50), respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that bachelor's degree or above was independently associated with sufficient knowledge (OR = 2.372, 95%CI: 1.160-4.853, p = 0.018). Knowledge (OR = 1.350, 95%CI: 1.166-1.563, p < 0.001) and hemoglobin within 60-90 g/L (OR = 1.782, 95%CI: 1.090-2.912, p = 0.021) were independently associated with positive attitudes. Moreover, attitudes (OR = 1.618, 95%CI: 1.454-1.799, p < 0.001) and diagnosis ≥1 year (OR = 1.949, 95%CI: 1.171-3.243, p = 0.010) were independently associated with proactive practices. The path analysis demonstrated that knowledge was directly and positively correlated with attitudes (ß = 0.484, 95% CI: 0.363-0.647, p = 0.008), and attitudes was directly and positively correlated with practices (ß = 1.195, 95% CI: 1.062-1.332, p = 0.007). Moreover, knowledge was indirectly and positively correlated with practice (ß = 0.579, 95% CI: 0.434-0.805, p = 0.004). Conclusion: Anemia patients have sufficient knowledge, negative attitudes, but proactive practices toward the toward disease management Comprehensive training programs are needed to improve anemia patients practices in this area.

This study examined the associations of an attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) diagnosis, impulsivity, and perceived social support with Internet altruistic behaviors (IABs) in adolescents and the associations of IABs with depression, suicidality, and nonsuicidal self-injury in this group. In total, 176 adolescents aged between 11 and 18 years with ADHD and 173 adolescents without ADHD (matched with the ADHD group by sex and age) participated in this study. The adolescents rated their IABs on the Internet altruistic behavior scale, impulsivity on the Barratt impulsiveness scale version 11, and perceived family and peer support on the family and social relationship domains of the Taiwanese quality of life questionnaire for adolescents. The associations of ADHD, impulsivity, and social support with IABs and the associations of IABs with depression, suicidality, and nonsuicidal self-injury were examined through multivariable linear regression analysis. The present study found that more time spent on the Internet (p < 0.001), greater perceived peer support (p < 0.001), greater impulsiveness characterized by a lack of self-control and perseverance (p < 0.001), poorer ability to plan and look ahead (p < 0.001), and an ADHD diagnosis (p = 0.003) were significantly associated with a higher level of IABs. IABs were not significantly associated with severe depression, suicidality, or nonsuicidal self-injury (all p > 0.05). The results of this study indicated that multiple individual and social factors were associated with IABs in adolescents. IABs were not significantly associated with severe depression, suicidality, or nonsuicidal self-injury in adolescents.

ABSTRACT

Adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) package a single-stranded (ss) DNA genome of 4.7 kb in their capsid of ~20 nm in diameter. AAV replication requires co-infection of a helper virus, such as adenovirus. During the optimization of recombinant AAV production, a small viral nonstructural protein, membrane-associated accessory protein (MAAP), was identified. However, the function of the MAAP in the context of AAV infection remains unknown. Here, we investigated the expression strategy and function of the MAAP during infection of both AAV2 and AAV5 in human embryonic kidney (HEK)293 cells. We found that AAV2 MAAP2 and AAV5 MAAP5 are expressed from the capsid gene (cap)-transcribing mRNA spliced from the donor to the second splice site that encodes VP2 and VP3. Thus, this AAV cap gene transcribes a multicistronic mRNA that can be translated to four viral proteins, MAAP, VP2, AAP, and VP3 in order. In AAV2 infection, MAAP2 predominantly localized in the cytoplasm, alongside the capsid, near the nuclear and plasma membranes, but a fraction of MAAP2 exhibited nuclear localization. In AAV5 infection, MAAP5 revealed a distinct pattern, predominantly localizing within the nucleus. In the cells infected with an MAAP knockout mutant of AAV2 or AAV5, both viral DNA replication and virus replication increased, whereas virus egress decreased, and the decrease in virus egress can be restored by providing MAAP in trans. In summary, MAAP, a novel AAV nonstructural protein translated from a multicistronic viral cap mRNA, not only facilitates cellular egress of AAV but also likely negatively affects viral DNA replication during infection. IMPORTANCE: Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) has been used as a gene delivery vector in clinical gene therapy. In current gene therapies employing rAAV, a high dose of the vector is required. Consequently, there is a high demand for efficient and high-purity vector production systems. In this study, we demonstrated that membrane-associated accessory protein (MAAP), a small viral nonstructural protein, is translated from the same viral mRNA transcript encoding VP2 and VP3. In AAV-infected cells, apart from its prevalent expression in the cytoplasm with localization near the plasma and nuclear membranes, the MAAP also exhibits notable localization within the nucleus. During AAV infection, MAAP expression increases the cellular egress of progeny virions and decreases viral DNA replication and progeny virion production. Thus, the choice of MAAP expression has pros and cons during AAV infection, which could provide a guide to rAAV production.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Hepatic stellate cells (HSCs) play a crucial role in the development of fibrosis in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Small extracellular vesicles (sEV) act as mediators for intercellular information transfer, delivering various fibrotic factors that impact the function of HSCs in liver fibrosis. In this study, we investigated the role of lipotoxic hepatocyte derived sEV (LTH-sEV) in HSCs activation and its intrinsic mechanisms. METHODS: High-fat diet (HFD) mice model was constructed to confirm the expression of LIMA1. The relationship between LIMA1-enriched LTH-sEV and LX2 activation was evaluated by measurement of fibrotic markers and related genes. Levels of mitophagy were detected using mt-keima lentivirus. The interaction between LIMA1 and PINK1 was discovered through database prediction and molecular docking. Finally, sEV was injected to investigate whether LIMA1 can accelerate HFD induced liver fibrosis in mice. RESULTS: LIMA1 expression was upregulated in lipotoxic hepatocytes and was found to be positively associated with the expression of the HSCs activation marker α-SMA. Lipotoxicity induced by OPA led to an increase in both the level of LIMA1 protein in LTH-sEV and the release of LTH-sEV. When HSCs were treated with LTH-sEV, LIMA1 was observed to hinder LX2 mitophagy while facilitating LX2 activation. Further investigation revealed that LIMA1 derived from LTH-sEV may inhibit PINK1-Parkin-mediated mitophagy, consequently promoting HSCs activation. Knocking down LIMA1 significantly attenuates the inhibitory effects of LTH-sEV on mitophagy and the promotion of HSCs activation. CONCLUSIONS: Lipotoxic hepatocyte-derived LIMA1-enriched sEVs play a crucial role in promoting HSCs activation in NAFLD-related liver fibrosis by negatively regulating PINK1 mediated mitophagy. These findings provide new insights into the pathological mechanisms involved in the development of fibrosis in NAFLD.

ABSTRACT

Objectives: Providing satisfactory healthcare services for breast cancer survivors can effectively reduce their burden and the pressure on medical resources. The aim of this study was to explore health care service demands for community-dwelling breast cancer survivors using the Kano model. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted from January to March 2023 among breast cancer survivors discharged from a tertiary cancer hospital. Participants were asked to fill out a self-designed questionnaire involving the Kano model, which helped to categorize and prioritize the attributes of healthcare services. The questionnaire included 30 health care services. Additionally, their social demographic characteristics were collected during the survey. Results: A total of 296 valid questionnaires were collected, and demand attributes of the 30 health care services were evaluated. The findings revealed that one of 30 services was classified as "must-be attributes" (body image management), 13 as "one-dimensional attributes" (focused on medical security support, health management, and health counseling), 3 as "attractive attributes" (focused on communication needs and telehealth services), and 11 as "indifferent attributes" (mainly in the area of psycho-social services). Conclusions: Breast cancer survivors in the community have different levels of need for various health care services. It's crucial for healthcare providers to identify these needs and devise effective strategies to deliver the appropriate services. Services with must-be and one-dimensional attributes should be given priority, and efforts should be made to provide services with attractive attributes, hence improving the quality of life of breast cancer survivors.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) vaccination programs in Taiwan are one of the earliest programs in the world and have largely reduced the prevalence of HBV infection. We aimed to demonstrate the vaccination efficacy after 35 years and identify gaps toward HBV elimination. METHODS: A total of 4717 individuals aged 1-60 years were recruited from four administrative regions based on the proportion of population distribution. Serum levels of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis B surface antibody (anti-HBs), and hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) levels were assessed. HBV viral load, genotypes and HBsAg 'ɑ' determinant variants were evaluated if indicated. RESULTS: After 35 years of vaccination, the overall seropositivity rates for HBsAg and anti-HBc in Taiwan were 4.05% and 21.3%, respectively. The vaccinated birth cohorts exhibited significantly lower seropositivity rates for both markers compared to the unvaccinated birth cohorts (HBsAg: 0.64% vs. 9.78%; anti-HBc: 2.1% vs. 53.55%, respectively; p < 0.0001). Maternal transmission was identified as the main route of HBV infection in breakthrough cases. Additionally, increased prevalences of genotype C and HBsAg escape mutants were observed. CONCLUSION: The 35-year universal HBV vaccination program effectively reduced the burden of HBV infection, but complete eradication of HBV infection has not yet been achieved. In addition to immunization, comprehensive screening and antiviral therapy for infected individuals, especially for pregnant women, are crucial strategies to eliminate HBV.

Background: The Russo-Ukrainian War has resulted in massive social, economic, and psychological burdens worldwide. This study aimed to investigate the associations between time spent on the war-related news and psychological distress, including depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and the mediating effects of rumination on the associations in people residing in Poland and Ukraine. Methods: This cross-sectional study recruited 1438 internet users in Poland and Ukraine, and collected data on levels of rumination, psychological distress, and the amount of time spent on and sources of the news of the Russo-Ukrainian War. Structural equation modeling with bootstrapping methods was used to evaluate the mediation effect. Multivariate linear regression was used to identify predictive effect of the source of the war-related news on psychological distress and rumination. Results: The results showed a mediating effect of rumination on the association between the amount of time spent on the war-related news and psychological distress among participants in Poland (ß = 0.16, p < 0.001) and Ukraine (ß = 0.15, p < 0.001). Approaching the news from television was associated with rumination (ß = 0.607, p < 0.001) and PTSD symptoms in Poland (ß = 2.475, p = 0.009), while approaching news from the internet was associated with rumination in Poland (ß = 0.616, p = 0.001). Conclusion: The study identified the mediating effect of rumination and the associations of approaching the war-related news from television and the internet with mental health.
