ABSTRACT

Parabens are largely concentrated in food waste (FW) due to their large consumption as the widely used preservative. To date, whether and how they affect FW resource recovery via anaerobic fermentation is still largely unknown. This work unveiled the hormesis-like effects of two typical parabens (i.e., methylparaben and n-butylparaben) on VFAs production during FW anaerobic fermentation (i.e., parabens increased VFAs by 6.73-14.49 % at low dose but caused 82.51-87.74 % reduction at high dose). Mechanistic exploration revealed that the parabens facilitated the FW solubilization and enhanced the associated substrates' biodegradability. The low parabens enriched the functional microorganisms (e.g., Firmicutes and Actinobacteria) and upregulated those critical genes involved in VFAs biosynthesis (e.g., GCK and PK) by activating the microbial adaptive capacity (i.e., quorum sensing and two-component system). Consequently, the metabolism rates of fermentation substrates and subsequent VFAs production were accelerated. However, due to increased biotoxicity of high parabens, the functional microorganisms and relevant metabolic activities were depressed, resulting in the significant reduction of VFAs biosynthesis. Structural equation modeling clarified that microbial community was the predominant factor affecting VFAs generation, followed by metabolic pathways. This work elucidated the dose-dependent effects and underlying mechanisms of parabens on FW anaerobic fermentation, providing insights for the effective management of FW resource recovery.

ABSTRACT

Various exogenous contaminants typically coexist in waste activated sludge (WAS), and the long-term impacts of these co-occurring contaminants on WAS anaerobic fermentation and associated mechanisms remain largely unknown. This study reveals that the co-occurrence of surfactants and nanoparticles (NPs, i.e., Fe2O3 and CeO2, frequently detected in sludge) exhibited time-dependent impacts on the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) biosynthesis. Surfactants triggered WAS decomposition and enhanced NPs dispersion, leading to increased exposure of functional anaerobes to NPs toxicity, negatively affecting them. Consequently, key fermentation processes, acidogenic bacterial abundance, and metabolic functions were inhibited in co-occurrence reactors compared to those containing only surfactants in the early stage (before 56 d). Surprisingly, the fermentation systems containing surfactants collapsed subsequently, with VFAs yield at 72 d decreasing by 48.59-71.27 % compared to 56 d. The keystone microbes (i.e., Acidobacteria (16 d) vs Patescibacteria (56 d)) were reshaped, and metabolic traits (i.e., proB involved in intracellular metabolism) were downregulated by 0.05-78.02 % due to reduced microbial adaptive capacity (i.e., quorum sensing (QS)). Partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) analysis suggests that the microbial community was the predominant factor influencing VFAs generation. This study provides new insights into the long-term effects of co-contaminants on the biological treatment of WAS.

ABSTRACT

Background: This study aims to analyze the safety and clinical efficacy of using double posterolateral coaxial portals for endoscopic treatment of posterior ankle impingement syndrome (PAIS), a procedure that has gained popularity in recent times. Methods: Six fresh foot samples were randomly selected to measure the distances of two posterolateral portals to the sural nerve in different positions (plantar flexion 10°, dorsiflexion 30°, and plantar flexion 30°) for safety evaluation. A prospective analysis was conducted on the clinical efficacy of the operative approach for endoscopic management of posterior ankle impingement syndrome, including evaluation of effectiveness and complications. Results: In this study, the mean distances of the first and second portals to the sural nerve were measured in different ankle positions. The distances were found to be 2.26 ± 0.22 cm and 1.59 ± 0.12 cm in the plantar flexion 10° position, 2.21 ± 0.21 cm and 1.55 ± 0.12 cm in the dorsiflexion 30° position, and 2.46 ± 0.29 cm and 1.73 ± 0.19 cm in the plantar flexion 30° position, demonstrating a significant safety margin from the nerve. A total of 38 patients underwent endoscopic treatment for posterior ankle impingement syndrome using double posterolateral coaxial portals between January 2012 and December 2017. This surgical approach provided access to the subtalar joint and posterior ankle region. The patients were followed up for an average of 38.2 months (24-72 months), with a satisfaction rate of 94.7%. There were no reported complications, and significant improvements were observed in both visual analogue scale (VAS) and The American Orthopedic Foot and Ankle Society Score (AOFAS) scores postoperatively. The VAS score decreased from 5.68 to 0.51 (P < 0.001), while the AOFAS score increased from 71.68 to 92.34 (P < 0.001), resulting in an excellent/good rate of 97.3%. Conclusion: The use of double posterolateral coaxial portals in the treatment of posterior ankle impingement syndrome offers several advantages, including improved safety, reduced risk of nerve injury, enhanced visualization of the posterior ankle and subtalar joint, favorable clinical outcomes, and minimal complications.

ABSTRACT

In the post-COVID-19 pandemic era, various antimicrobials have emerged and concentrated in waste-activated sludge (WAS), affecting the biological treatment of WAS. However, there is still a knowledge gap in the dynamic response and adaptive mechanism of anaerobic microbiome under exogenous antimicrobial stress. This study found that methylisothiazolinone (MIT, as a typic antimicrobial) caused an interesting lag effect on the volatile fatty acids (VFAs) promotion in the WAS anaerobic fermentation process. MIT was effective to disintegrate the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and those functional anaerobic microorganisms were easily exposed and negatively impacted by the MIT interference after the loss of protective barriers. Correspondingly, the ecological interactions and microbial metabolic functions related to VFA biosynthesis (e.g., pyruvate metabolism) were downregulated at the initial stage. The syntrophic consortia gradually adapted to the interference and attenuated the MIT stress by activating chemotaxis and resistance genes (e.g., excreting, binding, and inactivating). Due to the increased bioavailable substrates in the fermentation systems, the dominant microorganisms (i.e., Clostridium and Caloramator) with both VFAs production and MIT-tolerance functions have been domesticated. Moreover, MIT disrupted the syntrophic interaction between acetogens and methanogens and totally suppressed methanogens' metabolic activities. The VFA production derived from WAS anaerobic fermentation was therefore enhanced due to the interference of antimicrobial MIT stress. This work deciphered dynamic changes and adaptive evolution of anaerobic syntrophic consortia in response to antimicrobial stress and provided guidance on the evaluation and control of the ecological risks of exogenous pollutants in WAS treatment.

ABSTRACT

AIMS: To establish a cognitive appraisal path model that examines the impact of stroke knowledge on stigma with the parallel mediating effects of negative and positive coping traits, as well as the moderating effects of family functioning. BACKGROUND: Stroke-related stigma, a 'mixture' of negative emotions involving internal criticism and external judgement, has been shown to impair patients' health outcomes. However, the specific factors underlying cognitive appraisals and their pathways remain unknown. DESIGN: A cross-sectional design. METHODS: The cross-sectional sample was from two stroke centres in China. Questionnaires were administered to collect sociodemographic data, stroke knowledge, coping traits, family functioning and stigma. Hierarchical regression models and the moderated parallel mediation model were constructed to analyse influencing pathways. The study adhered to the strengthening the reporting of observational studies in epidemiology guideline. RESULTS: All 144 samples reported stigma symptoms with a moderate-to-high standardising score. The best hierarchical regression model explains 55.5% of the variance in stigma. The parallel mediation model indicated that negative and positive coping traits co-mediating the association of stroke knowledge and stigma. After adding the family functioning as a moderator, the moderated parallel mediation model was confirmed with adequate fit indices. CONCLUSION: Among the cognitive appraisal factors affecting stroke-related stigma, stroke knowledge reduces stigma by modifying coping traits, while poor family functioning may serve as an opposing moderator. Notably, when family support is insufficient, enhanced stroke knowledge might paradoxically exacerbate the stigma. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: This study contributes knowledge on transforming health education and emphasises the pivotal roles of clinical nursing practitioners. In similar global contexts, the study highlights integrating health education, psychological counselling and family support to advance systematic nursing practices. ABSTRACT

The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) has gained significant interest in the removal of organic pollutants. However, traditional methods usually suffer from drawbacks such as secondary contamination and high energy requirements. In this study, we propose a green and cost-effective approach utilizing calcium oxide (CaO) to activate PMS, aiming to construct a simple and reliable PMS based advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). The proposed CaO/PMS system achieved fast degradation of methylene blue (MB), where the degradation rate of CaO/PMS system (0.24 min-1) was nearly 2.67 times that of PMS alone (0.09 min-1). Under the optimized condition, CaO/PMS system exhibited remarkable durability against pH changes, co-exists ions or organic matters. Furthermore, singlet oxygen (1O2) was identified as the dominant reactive oxygen species by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and quenching tests. Accordingly, the degradation pathways of MB are proposed by combing the results of LC/MS analysis and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the predicted ecotoxicity of the generated byproducts evaluated by EOCSAR could provide systematic insights into the fates and environmental risks of MB. Overall, the study provides an eco-friendly and effective strategy for treating dyeing wastewater, which should shed light on the application of PMS based AOPs.

ABSTRACT: To investigate the molecular etiology of low sperm quality in patients with intractable spermatocystitis, spermatozoa samples from patients with persistent hematospermia undergoing transurethral seminal vesiculoscopy and healthy volunteers were utilized. Spermatozoa samples were collected from the seminal vesicles through transurethral seminal vesiculoscopy or by masturbation ejaculation. Sperm quality was analyzed by a WLJY-9000 color semen analysis system. Measurement of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) in the seminal plasma was performed using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Measurement of H2O2 in the seminal plasma was performed with a hydrogen peroxide kit. The protein levels of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and phosphorylated-Nrf2 (p-Nrf2) were measured by western blot analysis and immunofluorescence assays. Low sperm quality parameters and increased levels of inflammatory cytokines (TNFα, IL-6, and H2O2) in the seminal plasma were detected among the semen samples from the patients with persistent hematospermia. Nrf2 and p-Nrf2 were strongly expressed in the nucleus and periphery of human sperm cells, according to the results of the immunofluorescence assays. The protein levels of Nrf2 and p-Nrf2 were significantly lower in the spermatozoa samples from patients with persistent hematospermia than in those from healthy volunteers with normal sperm motility. The results suggested that Nrf2 signaling might play a role in the low sperm quality of patients with intractable spermatocystitis.

The preparation, characterization and adsorption performance of the phosphate-modified hydrochar (P-hydrochar) for Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin removal are investigated. Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption behavior fit well with the Hill model with the adsorption capacity of 119.61 and 98.38 mg/g, respectively. Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption kinetic process are accurately described by the Pseudo-second-order. Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin have synergy in the binary contaminant system, which reveals that Pb(II) adsorption amount is augmented. While ciprofloxacin adsorption amount is also augmented at low Pb(II) concentration and hindered at high Pb(II) concentration. Pb(II) adsorption mechanisms on P-hydrochar (e.g. precipitation, π-π interaction and complexation) are different from the ciprofloxacin (e.g. hydrogen bonding, pore filling, electrostatic attraction). Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption process are further analyzed by the density functional theory. The coexisted ions have little influenced on Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption. P-hydrochar still has large Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin adsorption capacity after five cycles. This result indicates that poplar sawdust waste can be converted into an efficient adsorbent to remove Pb(II) and ciprofloxacin from wastewater,.

ABSTRACT

An efficient PhI(OAc)2-mediated regioselective hydrothiolation of allenamides with thiophenol via a radical process was developed to create a workable route to vinyl sulfides. The reaction exhibits a good functional group tolerance and high efficiency, affording the products in good to excellent yields. Mechanistic investigations indicated that the radical cascade proceeds through an allyl radical intermediate, which is formed via the addition of the PhS radical to the central carbon of allenamides. Moreover, the reaction was also efficient with selenophenol, providing the corresponding product, vinyl selenide, in a 99% yield.

ABSTRACT

Due to its advantages of low latency, low power consumption, and high flexibility, FPGA-based acceleration technology has been more and more widely studied and applied in the field of computer vision in recent years. An FPGA-based feature extraction and tracking accelerator for real-time visual odometry (VO) and visual simultaneous localization and mapping (V-SLAM) is proposed, which can realize the complete acceleration processing capability of the image front-end. For the first time, we implement a hardware solution that combines features from accelerated segment test (FAST) feature points with Gunnar Farneback (GF) dense optical flow to achieve better feature tracking performance and provide more flexible technical route selection. In order to solve the scale invariance and rotation invariance lacking problems of FAST features, an efficient pyramid module with a five-layer thumbnail structure was designed and implemented. The accelerator was implemented on a modern Xilinx Zynq FPGA. The evaluation results showed that the accelerator could achieve stable tracking of features of violently shaking images and were consistent with the results from MATLAB code running on PCs. Compared to PC CPUs, which require seconds of processing time, the processing latency was greatly reduced to the order of milliseconds, making GF dense optical flow an efficient and practical technical solution on the edge side.

ABSTRACT

Quantum illumination is a quantum optical sensing technique, which employs an entangled source to detect low-reflectivity object immersed in a bright thermal background. Hybrid cavity-optomagnonics system promises to work as quantum illumination because a yttrium iron garnet (YIG) sphere can couple to microwave field and optical field. In this paper, we propose a scheme to enhance the entanglement between the output fields of the microwave and optical cavities by considering the intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity of the YIG. We investigate the difference between intrinsic Kerr nonlinearity and optomagnonical parametric-type coupling on improving entanglement. Our result show that the large value optomagnonical parametric-type coupling does not mean the large entanglement, nevertheless, the large value of Kerr nonlinearity does monotonously improve the entanglement for our group of parameters. Consequently, under feasible parameters of current experiment, the signal-to-noise ratio and probability of detection error can be improved after considering the magnon Kerr nonlinearity.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate whether machine learning, which is widely used in disease prediction and diagnosis based on demographic data and serological markers, can predict herpes occurrence in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). METHODS: A total of 286 SLE patients were included in this study, including 200 SLE patients without herpes and 86 SLE patients with herpes. SLE patients were randomly divided into a training group and a test group, and 18 demographic characteristics and serological indicators were compared between the two groups. RESULTS: We selected basophil, monocyte, white blood cell, age, immunoglobulin E, SLE Disease Activity Index, complement 4, neutrophil, and immunoglobulin G as the basic features of modeling. A random forest model had the best performance, but logistic and decision tree analyses had better clinical decision-making benefits. Random forest had a good consistency between feature importance judgment and feature selection. The 10-fold cross-validation showed the optimization of five model parameters. CONCLUSION: The random forest model may be an excellently performing model, which may help clinicians to identify SLE patients whose disease is complicated by herpes early.

ABSTRACT

Poplar waste is acted as feedstock to produce renewable biofuel and green chemical by catalytic pyrolysis using ferric nitrate and zinc chloride as additive. The additive contributes to the generation of furfural in bio-oil. Additive promotes the generation of H2 and inhibits the generation of CO with bio-gas heating value of 12.16 MJ (Nm3)-1. Biochar exists ZnO and Fe3O4 with large surface area, which could be used as absorbent and photocatalyst for tetracycline and ciprofloxacin removal. The tetracycline and ciprofloxacin adsorption amount of biochar are 316.41 and 255.23 mg g-1 respectively. While the photocatalytic degradation removal of the tetracycline and ciprofloxacin is close to 100%. The adsorption and photocatalytic degradation mechanism are investigate and analyzed using the density functional theory and electron paramagnetic resonance analysis. Biochar can be quickly recycled and regenerated after use. Besides, biochar can be used in lithium ion battery industry for energy storage, which specific capacity is 535 mAh g-1.

Cyclopropyl groups are widely found in pharmaceutical products and their application as precursors or key reaction intermediates benefits the development of a wide range of reactions. Herein, we report a facile protocol for the synthesis of this compound through gold-catalyzed [2 + 1] cycloaddition of allenamides with sulfoxonium ylides. The reaction exhibited good functional group tolerance and high efficiency, affording the products in good to excellent yields with good diastereoisomerism. The steric hindrance between the sulfonamide group and the gold catalyst determined the major configuration of the formed cis-cyclopropane product. Moreover, the aldehyde could be converted to amide under Schmidt reaction conditions and alcohol under reduction conditions.

ABSTRACT

Background: Schistosomiasis, the second most neglected tropical disease defined by the WHO, is a significant zoonotic parasitic disease infecting approximately 250 million people globally. This debilitating disease has seriously threatened public health, while only one drug, praziquantel, is used to control it. Because of this, it highlights the significance of identifying more satisfactory target genes for drug development. Protein translocation into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is vital to the subsequent localization of secretory and transmembrane proteins. The signal peptidase complex (SPC) is an essential component of the translocation machinery and functions to cleave the signal peptide sequence (SP) of secretory and membrane proteins entering the ER. Inhibiting the expression of SPC can lead to the abolishment or weaker cleavage of the signal peptide, and the accumulation of uncleaved protein in the ER would affect the survival of organisms. Despite the evident importance of SPC, in vivo studies exploring its function have yet to be reported in S. japonicum. Methods: The S. japonicum SPC consists of four proteins: SPC12, SPC18, SPC22 and SPC25. RNA interference was used to investigate the impact of SPC components on schistosome growth and development in vivo. qPCR and in situ hybridization were applied to localize the SPC25 expression. Mayer's carmalum and Fast Blue B staining were used to observe morphological changes in the reproductive organs of dsRNA-treated worms. The effect of inhibitor treatment on the worm's viability and pairing was also examined in vitro. Results: Our results showed that RNAi-SPC delayed the worm's normal development and was even lethal for schistosomula in vivo. Among them, the expression of SPC25 was significantly higher in the developmental stages of the reproductive organs in schistosomes. Moreover, SPC25 possessed high expression in the worm tegument, testes of male worms and the ovaries and vitellarium of female worms. The SPC25 knockdown led to the degeneration of reproductive organs, such as the ovaries and vitellarium of female worms. The SPC25 exhaustion also reduced egg production while reducing the pathological damage of the eggs to the host. Additionally, the SPC-related inhibitor AEBSF or suppressing the expression of SPC25 also impacted cultured worms' pairing and viability in vitro. Conclusions: These data demonstrate that SPC is necessary to maintain the development and reproduction of S. japonicum. This research provides a promising anti-schistosomiasis drug target and discovers a new perspective on preventing worm fecundity and maturation.

Ultrabright green-emissive AIE nanoparticles (AIENPs) were used as signal-amplification probes to enhance the detectability of lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA). The detection performances of the green-emissive AIENP probes in both sandwich and competitive LFIA formats were systematically evaluated. Benefiting from its remarkable fluorescent brightness, the developed AIENP-LFIA showed versatile applicability for the detection of small molecules and macromolecules by using ochratoxin A (OTA) and procalcitonin (PCT) as model analytes, respectively. Under the optimum conditions, the detection limits (LODs) of the fabricated AIENP-LFIA for OTA and PCT were 0.043 ng mL-1 and 0.019 ng mL-1, respectively. These LOD values are significantly lower than those of conventional LFIA methods using gold nanoparticles as signal reporters. In addition, we demonstrated the practical application potential of AIENP-LFIA for the detection of OTA in real maize samples and PCT in real serum samples. These results indicated that the ultrabright green-emissive AIENPs were promising as signal output materials for building high-performance LFIA platform and broadening the application scenarios of LFIA.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to construct a structural equation model guided by the ecological model to explore the factors influencing health behaviour among hypertensive stroke patients 6 months post-stroke. BACKGROUND: Health behaviour is important for recurrence prevention in hypertensive stroke patients. Moreover, previous studies have indicated that health behaviour at the end of the recovery period is of particular concern. The ecological model provides an integrated perspective for explaining the factors influencing health behaviour. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study guided by the STROBE. METHODS: A total of 121 hypertensive stroke patients were included to assess stroke knowledge, health belief, depression, family function, chronic illness resource and health behaviour. A structural equation model was used to explore the health behaviour's factors and pathways. RESULTS: In the final ecological model, sex, education level, depression and chronic illness resource directly affected health behaviour. Stroke knowledge directly affected health behaviour and indirectly affected health behaviour through health belief and chronic illness resource. Family function indirectly affected health behaviour through health belief, depression and chronic illness resource. Health belief affected health behaviour indirectly through depression and chronic illness resource. CONCLUSIONS: Hypertensive stroke patients' health behaviour is jointly and interactively influenced by stroke knowledge, health belief, depression, family function and chronic illness resource. In particular, chronic illness resource is an important mediator of health behaviour. RELEVANCE TO CLINICAL PRACTICE: For clinical practitioners, health behaviour of men and patients with low educational levels should be specifically focused on. Additionally, it is necessary to provide stroke knowledge, establish health beliefs, control depression emotion and improve family function. Furthermore, chronic illness resources should be improved particularly due to its important mediating role. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: Participants completed demographic and disease-related questionnaires during hospitalisation and completed other questionnaires when returning to hospital at 6 months follow-up.

ABSTRACT

Objective: This cross-sectional investigation aimed to determine the incidence, clinical characteristics, prognosis, and related risk factors of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions related to infection with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron strain in mainland China. Methods: Data of patients with SARS-CoV-2 from December 28, 2022, to February 21, 2023, were collected through online and offline questionnaires from 45 tertiary hospitals and one center for disease control and prevention in mainland China. The questionnaire included demographic information, previous health history, smoking and alcohol drinking, SARS-CoV-2 vaccination, olfactory and gustatory function before and after infection, other symptoms after infection, as well as the duration and improvement of olfactory and gustatory dysfunction. The self-reported olfactory and gustatory functions of patients were evaluated using the Olfactory VAS scale and Gustatory VAS scale. Results: A total of 35 566 valid questionnaires were obtained, revealing a high incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunctions related to infection with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron strain (67.75%). Females(χ2=367.013, P<0.001) and young people(χ2=120.210, P<0.001) were more likely to develop these dysfunctions. Gender(OR=1.564, 95%CI: 1.487-1.645), SARS-CoV-2 vaccination status (OR=1.334, 95%CI: 1.164-1.530), oral health status (OR=0.881, 95%CI: 0.839-0.926), smoking history (OR=1.152, 95%CI=1.080-1.229), and drinking history (OR=0.854, 95%CI: 0.785-0.928) were correlated with the occurrence of olfactory and taste dysfunctions related to SARS-CoV-2(above P<0.001). 44.62% (4 391/9 840) of the patients who had not recovered their sense of smell and taste also suffered from nasal congestion, runny nose, and 32.62% (3 210/9 840) suffered from dry mouth and sore throat. The improvement of olfactory and taste functions was correlated with the persistence of accompanying symptoms(χ2=10.873, P=0.001). The average score of olfactory and taste VAS scale was 8.41 and 8.51 respectively before SARS-CoV-2 infection, but decreased to3.69 and 4.29 respectively after SARS-CoV-2 infection, and recovered to 5.83and 6.55 respectively at the time of the survey. The median duration of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions was 15 days and 12 days, respectively, with 0.5% (121/24 096) of patients experiencing these dysfunctions for more than 28 days. The overall self-reported improvement rate of smell and taste dysfunctions was 59.16% (14 256/24 096). Gender(OR=0.893, 95%CI: 0.839-0.951), SARS-CoV-2 vaccination status (OR=1.334, 95%CI: 1.164-1.530), history of head and facial trauma(OR=1.180, 95%CI: 1.036-1.344, P=0.013), nose (OR=1.104, 95%CI: 1.042-1.171, P=0.001) and oral (OR=1.162, 95%CI: 1.096-1.233) health status, smoking history(OR=0.765, 95%CI: 0.709-0.825), and the persistence of accompanying symptoms (OR=0.359, 95%CI: 0.332-0.388) were correlated with the recovery of olfactory and taste dysfunctions related to SARS-CoV-2 (above P<0.001 except for the indicated values). Conclusion: The incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunctions related to infection with the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron strain is high in mainland China, with females and young people more likely to develop these dysfunctions. Active and effective intervention measures may be required for cases that persist for a long time. The recovery of olfactory and taste functions is influenced by several factors, including gender, SARS-CoV-2 vaccination status, history of head and facial trauma, nasal and oral health status, smoking history, and persistence of accompanying symptoms.

ABSTRACT

High-risk human papillomavirus (HPV)-related cancers consist of cervical cancer, anal cancer, penile cancer, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, and head and neck cancer (HNC). Of these, the disease burden of HNC is second only to cervical cancer. HNC mostly originates from malignant lesions of squamous epithelial cells and mainly includes oral cavity cancer, pharyngeal cancer (including nasopharyngeal cancer, oropharyngeal cancer, and hypopharyngeal cancer), and laryngeal cancer. Tobacco use, alcohol abuse, and HPV infection are three primary risk factors. Recently, there is an upward trend of HNC incidence globally, especially in high-income countries. In China, the disease burden and trends of HPV-related HNC are still not clear. A few small sample size and single-center studies suggest a high HPV prevalence and increasing trend in HNC. Methodological differences in HPV testing and regional variabilities still exist among these studies. Among the anatomic sites, oropharyngeal cancer has been shown to be caused by HPV infection, but the association of HPV with other sites is still under debate. In addition, there is a paucity of relevant studies. Here, this review narrates the association between HPV infection and HNC, compares the differences between global and Chinese studies, and then explores the importance of HPV infection in various anatomical sites. The main objective is to highlight the research on HPV-related HNC and promote relevant prevention and treatment programs.

ABSTRACT

In order to improve the traction performance of a wheel of a micro-tiller on the soil surface of a paddy field, we extracted the surface curve of a cow's hoof and used the cow's hoof as a bionic prototype to design a bionic paddy wheel. In order to verify the passability of the bionic paddy wheel in paddy soil, a wheel-soil test bench was built in the experimental field with a moisture content of 36%. The test results show that under the condition of the same load on the wheel, the changing laws of torque, drawbar pull, and slip ratio of the bionic paddy wheel and the conventional vaned wheel are similar. The torque and drawbar pull of the bionic paddy wheel are higher than those of the conventional vaned wheel at the same slip ratio. The maximum torque and hook traction provided by the bionic paddy wheel and the conventional vaned wheel both increase with the increase of the load on the wheel. Under the same load on the wheel, the bionic paddy wheel is at least 22% higher than the conventional vaned wheel. Compared with the conventional vaned wheel, the bionic paddy wheel can provide a higher driving force and hook traction, which can improve the working efficiency of the vehicle in the paddy field.
