ABSTRACT

Polymer composites based on poly(N,N'-bis-4-butylphenyl-N,N'-bisphenyl)benzidine (poly-TPD) with PCBM and copper(II) pyropheophorbide derivative (Cu-PP) were developed. In thin films of the poly-TPD and Cu-PP composites, the charge carrier mobility was investigated for the first time. In the ternary poly-TPD:PCBM:Cu-PP composite, the electron and hole mobilities are the most balanced compared to binary composites and the photoconductivity is enhanced due to the sensitization by Cu-PP in blue and red spectral ranges. The new composites are promising for use in the development of photodetectors.

ABSTRACT

Cyclic trinuclear Ag(I) pyrazolate interacts with phenylacetylene forming a mix-ligand complex in which one pyrazolate ligand is changed to phenylethynide. The CC- fragment coordinates only to two silver(I) atoms via one carbon atom demonstrating unique µ2-η1 σ-coordination with close Ag-C bond lengths and Ag-C-C angles. The complex exhibits blue emission under UV irradiation.

ABSTRACT

A reaction of a cyclic trinuclear copper(I) or silver(I) pyrazolate complex ([MPz]3, M = Cu, Ag) with 1,1'-dimethyl-2,2'-bibenzimidazole (L) leads to the formation of tetranuclear adducts decorated by one or two molecules of a diimine ligand, depending on the amount of the ligand added (0.75 or 1.5 equivalents). The coordination of two L molecules stabilizes the formation of a practically idealized tetrahedral four-metal core in the case of a copper-containing complex and a distorted tetrahedron in the case of a Ag analog. In contrast, complexes containing one molecule of diimine possess two types of metals, two- and three-coordinated, forming the significantly distorted central M4 cores. The diimine ligands are twisted in these complexes with dihedral angles of ca. 50-60°. A TD-DFT analysis demonstrated the preference of a triplet state for the twisted 1,1'-dimethyl-2,2'-bibenzimidazole and a singlet state for the planar geometry. All obtained complexes demonstrated, in a solution, the blue fluorescence of the ligand-centered (LC) nature typical for free diimine. In contrast, a temperature decrease to 77 K stabilized the structure close to that observed in the solid state and activated the triplet states, leading to green phosphorescence at ca. 500 nm. The silver-containing complex Ag4Pz4L exhibited dual emission from both the singlet and triplet states, even at room temperature.

ABSTRACT

Cu (II) protoporphyrin Cu-PP-IX and chlorin Cu-C-e6 were found to have both thin solid film formation and charge carrier transport abilities. In the layers deposited by resistive thermal evaporation, the mobilities of holes and electrons are on the order of 10-5 cm2 V-1 s-1. Organic light-emitting diodes incorporating the dye molecules as emitting dopants demonstrate electroluminescence in the UV and near-IR ranges.

ABSTRACT

Luminescent temperature sensors are of great interest because they allow remote determination of temperature in transparent media, such as living tissues, as well as on scattering or transparent surfaces of materials. This study analyzes the luminescent properties of copper(II) etioporphyrinate (Cu-EtioP) in a polystyrene film upon variation of temperature from -195 °C to +65 °C in a cryostat. It is shown that the ratio of intensities of phosphorescence transitions in the red spectral region of such a material varies significantly, that is, the material has thermosensory properties. The phosphorescence decay curves of copper(II) etioporphyrinate in a polystyrene film are analyzed. The quantum yield of phosphorescence of copper(II) etioporphyrinate determined by the absolute method was 3.15%. It was also found that the electroluminescence (EL) spectra of copper(II) etioporphyrinate in a poly(9-vinylcarbazole) (PVK) matrix demonstrated a similar change in the spectra in the temperature range -3 °C to +80 °C. That is, copper(II) etioporphyrinate can also be used as a luminescent temperature sensor as part of an active OLED layer.

ABSTRACT

Studies on copper(II) tetrafluorenyl porphyrinate (CuTFP) and copper(II) tetraphenyl porphyrinate (CuTPP) have been focused on the charge carrier transport in their solid films and electroluminescence of their composites. In the dye layers deposited by resistive thermal evaporation, the mobilities of holes and electrons are on the order of 10-5 and 10-6 cm2 V-1 s-1 for the charge transport under the influence of traps, and the charge mobility reaches the order of 10-3 cm2 V-1 s-1 at space-charge-limited current in the nontrapping mode. For the dye molecules, the correlation between the mobility of charge carriers and the distribution of the electron density on the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO), which serve as hopping sites for holes and electrons, respectively, is considered. Organic light-emitting diodes incorporating the dye molecules as emitting dopants demonstrate electroluminescence in the near-infrared (IR) range.

ABSTRACT

Three new benzothiadiazole (BTD)-containing luminophores with different configurations of aryl linkers have been prepared via Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling Suzuki and Buchwald-Hartwig reactions. Photophysical and electroluminescent properties of the compounds were investigated to estimate their potential for optoelectronic applications. All synthesized structures have sufficiently high quantum yields in film. The BTD with aryl bridged carbazole unit demonstrated the highest electrons and holes mobility in a series. OLED with light-emitting layer (EML) based on this compound exhibited the highest brightness, as well as current and luminous efficiency. The synthesized compounds are not only luminophores with a high photoluminescence quantum yield, but also active transport centers for charge carriers in EML of OLED devices.

ABSTRACT

A series of emissive Cu(I) cationic complexes with 3-(2-pyridyl)-5-phenyl-pyrazole and various phosphines: dppbz (1), Xantphos (2), DPEPhos (3), PPh3 (4), and BINAP (5) were designed and characterized. Complexes obtained exhibit bright yellow-green emission (ca. 520-650 nm) in the solid state with a wide range of QYs (1-78%) and lifetimes (19-119 µs) at 298 K. The photoluminescence efficiency dramatically depends on the phosphine ligand type. The theoretical calculations of buried volumes and excited states explained the emission behavior for 1-5 as well as their lifetimes. The bulky and rigid phosphines promote emission efficiency through the stabilization of singlet and triplet excited states.

Archaeal lipids ensure unprecedented stability of archaea membranes in extreme environments. Here, we incorporate a characteristic structural feature of an archaeal lipid, the cyclopentane ring, into hydrocarbon chains of a short-chain (C12) phosphatidylcholine to explore whether the insertion would allow such a lipid (1,2-di-(3-(3-hexylcyclopentyl)-propanoate)-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine, diC12cp-PC) to form stable bilayers at room temperature. According to fluorescence-based assays, in water diC12cp-PC formed liquid-crystalline bilayers at room temperature. Liposomes produced from diC12cp-PC retained calcein for over a week when stored at +4 °C. diC12cp-PC could also form model bilayer lipid membranes that were by an order of magnitude more stable to electrical breakdown than egg PC membranes. Molecular dynamics simulation showed that the cyclopentane fragment fixes five carbon atoms (or four C-C bonds), which is compensated by the higher mobility of the rest of the chain. This was found to be the reason for the remarkable stability of the diC12cp-PC bilayer: restricted conformational mobility of a chain segment increases the membrane bending modulus (compared to a normal hydrocarbon chain of the same length). Here, higher stiffness practically does not affect the line tension of a membrane pore edge. Rather it makes it more difficult for diC12cp-PC to rearrange in order to line the edge of a hydrophilic pore; therefore, fewer pores are formed.
