ABSTRACT

A waste feedstock-derived economical basic alternative catalyst is described in this review. Eggshell is one of the household wastes created in tons of weight daily. Therefore, in order to reduce the environmental pollution-related problems, its use in heterogeneous catalysis can be attributed as a great contribution for the chemical and material science society to carry out several known reactions and for the much-needed energy alternative biodiesel production as low-cost catalytic system. Keeping green chemistry in mind, industrial use of these catalysts may also reduce the use of other traditionally used high-cost chemical catalytic systems.

ABSTRACT

(-)-Epicatechin, a natural flavonoid reportedly has huge pharmacological properties. In this study the cestocide effect of (-)-epicatechin is demonstrated in Raillietina echinobothrida. Although the antiparasitic activity of (-)-epicatechin has been demonstrated against protozoa, helminths and ectoparasites, in the present study the cestocide activity of (-)-epicatechin is shown to be related to a decrease in nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity and nitric oxide (NO) production. On exposure to 0.53mg/ml each of epicatechin, reference drug praziquantel and Ñ  Nitro-l- Arginine Methyl Ester (NOS inhibitor), the parasites attained paralysis at 10.15, 0.27 and 11.21h followed by death at 30.15, 1.21 and 35.18h respectively. Biochemical analysis showed a significant decrease in activity of NOS (57.360, 36.040 and 44.615%) and NO (41.579, 19.078 and 24.826%) in comparison to the controls. NADPH-diaphorase histochemical staining (a selective marker for NOS in neuronal tissue) demonstrated a pronounced decline in the visible staining activity in the tegument, subtegument and the peripheral nerve regions following exposure to the treatments. Strong binding affinity of (-)-epicatechin with NOS protein was also revealed through docking studies. The results strongly define the probable anthelmintic activity of our compound through its influence on the NOS activity.

ABSTRACT

A new species of montane toad Duttaphrynus is described from Nagaland state of Northeast India. The new species is diagnosable based on following combination of characters: absence of preorbital, postorbital and orbitotympanic ridges, elongated and broad parotid gland, first finger longer than second and presence of a mid-dorsal line. The tympanum is hidden under a skin fold (in male) or absent (in female). The species is compared with its congers from India and Indo-China. We propose to consider Duttaphrynus wokhaensis as junior synonym of Duttaphrynus melanostictus.

ABSTRACT

The use of plants as a source of medicine is an important component of the health care system in rural India. Carex baccans (Cyperaceae) and Potentilla fulgens (Rosaceae) have been known since ancient times in northeast India for their antitumor, antidiabetic, and antihelmintic properties. The present study was designed to determine the subacute toxicity profile of the root tuber extract of C. baccans and root-peel extract of P. fulgens in Wistar rats. The subacute oral toxicity was conducted using sublethal doses of 40, 50, 100, 150, 200, and 400 mgkg-1 body weights. Surface topographical and ultrastructural observations of liver and intestinal microvilli showed remarkable deformation and disruption, accompanied by quantitative changes in the liver enzymes, i.e., aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase in comparison to those of the control group. Apoptotic cell death was observed in the liver cells of rats exposed to both of the plant extracts. A significant increase in splenic lymphocyte count was also observed in rats exposed to the highest concentration of both extracts. The results showed that consumption of the plant extracts at higher doses may cause toxicological effect if treatment continues for a long time.
