ABSTRACT

This study examined the relationships among self-reported health, daily positive mood, and daily emotional exhaustion among employees in health and fitness clubs using residual dynamic structural equation modeling (RDSEM). A questionnaire was completed by 179 employees at recruitment and then a diary survey over 10 consecutive workdays. Results of RDSEM analyses revealed that daily positive mood was negatively associated with daily emotional exhaustion at both within-person and between-person levels. Self-reported health was positively related to the person's mean of daily positive mood and negatively associated with the person's mean of daily emotional exhaustion. Self-reported health moderated the relationship between daily positive mood and daily emotional exhaustion; employees with higher self-reported health levels tend to respond with larger changes in their daily emotional exhaustion when their daily positive mood changes. These findings provide important insights for organizations aiming at their employees' health, happiness, and job burnout.

ABSTRACT

This study aimed to apply longitudinal data (in four waves) to examine relationships between body mass index (BMI), flexibility, muscular endurance, and explosive power, and employed a random-intercept panel model (RIPM) to divide the variations of different waves into between- and within-person variations. Furthermore, a multi-group model test was conducted to explore whether an interaction effect existed between sex and these relationships. The data were collected from a university in Taiwan between August 2009 and July 2010, and 3863 freshman and junior students were recruited. Results showed that the between- and within-person relationships between BMI and explosive power, and between BMI and muscular endurance, were negative (independent of sex). The negative between- and within-person associations between BMI and muscular endurance were both invariant with respect to sex. The negative between-person associations between BMI and explosive power were not equivalent for both sexes, yet the within-person associations between BMI and explosive power were equivalent for both sexes. The between-person associations between BMI and flexibility were positive for both sexes, but the within-person associations of these two variables were negative for both sexes. The invariance test confirmed that the positive associations of between-person BMI and between-person flexibility were invariant for both sexes, yet the negative associations of within-person BMI and within-person flexibility were not equivalent for both sexes. Between-and within-person correlations among explosive power, muscular endurance, and flexibility were significantly positive. Only the auto-regressions of BMI and muscular endurance were significant and equivalent for both sexes.

ABSTRACT

STUDY DESIGN: Controlled laboratory study. OBJECTIVES: To compare the neuromuscular function of the triceps surae muscle bilaterally in elite athletes with unilateral chronic Achilles tendinopathy. BACKGROUND: Previous studies suggest that tendinopathies or chronic pain may lead to a spinal/supraspinal level modulation of the excitability or voluntary activation of ipsilateral motor units. However, this has not been studied in Achilles tendinopathy. METHODS: Fourteen college athletes (mean ± SD age, 24.2 ± 1.7 years) who had unilateral chronic middle-portion tendinopathy in their Achilles tendons were recruited. Bilateral measurements of soleus reflex tests, including H-reflex and V wave, and rate of force development (RFD), as well as corresponding electromyography of the tibialis anterior and triceps surae muscles, were performed. Statistical within-subject and between-leg comparisons were made. RESULTS: In the leg with tendinopathy, the V wave of the soleus muscle was significantly increased (P<.001). The side with tendinopathy also had a reduced normalized RFD (0-30, 0-50, and 0-100 ms) in plantar flexion, and concomitant higher electromyography ratios between the tibialis anterior and soleus (0-30 and 0-50 milliseconds) during the early stage of explosive contractions (P<.05). No significant differences were found for H-reflex, maximal plantar flexion and dorsiflexion torque, and absolute RFD. CONCLUSIONS: Higher volitional supraspinal reflexes and lower maximal-strength independent force development occur in the triceps surae of elite athletes with unilateral middle-portion Achilles tendinopathy. These changes potentially indicate an acquired compensatory mechanism for maximal force production and deficits in explosive strength. The RFD is also suggested as a sensitive parameter to depict neuromuscular changes during treatment of chronic tendinopathies.
