ABSTRACT

Left-digit bias is a cognitive bias wherein individuals assess the magnitude of numbers by emphasizing the leftmost digit. For instance, people often perceive the difference between $9.99 and $10.00 larger than that between $10.00 and $10.01, given the distinct left digits in the former two numbers. This study associates self-reported height with this cognitive bias. Taller stature is frequently associated with desirable attributes such as higher earnings and leadership positions; individuals may aspire to be taller and, consequently, report a height greater than their actual measurement. We posit that this inclination is more pronounced when combined with left-digit bias. In other words, individuals whose actual height ends in nine, such as 169 cm, are more likely to report their height as 170 cm than individuals with an actual height of 170 cm who report it as 171 cm. To conduct this analysis, we used data from an annual health survey of adolescents in grades 7-12. Our findings indicate that male adolescents exhibit a left-digit bias in reporting their height, whereas female adolescents do not. We contribute to the literature by providing new evidence of left-digit bias.

ABSTRACT

Nursing performance can be an evaluation indicator of hospitals. Therefore, improving it positively affects the development of nurses, patients, guardians, hospitals, and society. This descriptive correlational study was conducted to provide basic data necessary to improve nurses' work performance by examining the effects of nurses' grit on nursing job performance and mediating effects of job satisfaction and organizational commitment. The study participants were 186 nurses working at a university hospital in G province, Korea, with working experience of more than six months. Data analysis was performed using IBM SPSS Windows program version 21.0, descriptive statistics, Pearson's correlation, and multiple linear regression according to the purpose of the analysis in this study. In addition, PROCESS macro was used to test the mediating effect. We examined the mediating effect of job satisfaction and organizational commitment in the relationship between nurses' grit and nursing job performance. We found that the indirect effect of job satisfaction was significant in that nurses' grit influenced nursing job performance (B = 0.11, CI = 0.05-0.21). The indirect effect of organizational commitment was also significant in influencing nurses' grit on nursing job performance (B = 0.12, CI = 0.04-0.22). These findings contribute to the improvement of nurses' nursing performance. When grit improves, efforts are made to achieve job satisfaction and maintain organizational commitment through focusing on work with steady effort and interest in the goal. Based on this study, enhancing the grit that predicts individual nurses' achievement can enhance nursing job performance. Nevertheless, interventions to improve job satisfaction and organizational commitment should be developed and implemented.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: The proportion of multiple births has risen rapidly worldwide. Multiple births are likely to affect birth weight, which results in low birth weight (LBW) of less than 2500 g, possibly, because multiples are more likely to be born prematurely or less than 37 weeks into pregnancy. Using data from South Korea, this study aims to estimate the contribution of the rise in multiples to the rise in LBW incidence. METHODS: Based on data from 2000 to 2017, we estimated the effect of multiples on LBW rates using linear regression analysis. Based on the regression analysis and the change in the proportion of multiples during this period, we calculated the contribution of the rise in multiples to the rise in LBW incidence using the total differential. In other words, we divided the change in LBW during the period due to the change in multiples by the total change during the period. The data are from the birth registry of the National Statistical Office, which contains information on the 8.4 million live births during the period 2000-2017. RESULTS: We found that a 1 percentage point increase in multiples increases the proportion of LBWs by 0.495 percentage points. In addition, because the changes in the proportion of multiples and LBWs from 2000 to 2017 are 2.2 and 2.4 percentage points, respectively, 1.1 percentage points or 45.8% of the increase in LBWs over the period is due to the increase in multiples. CONCLUSION: Since the Korean government introduced a measure to reduce the number of transferred embryos recently, one may expect that multiples in Korea would reduce in the near future, as it did in other countries. Subsequently, the incidence of LBW children is also likely to reduce, which is desirable in terms of the children's health outcomes.

ABSTRACT

Existing literature shows that people exhibit disease avoidance behaviors in response to contagious disease outbreaks. We examine hospital avoidance behaviors during the 2015 Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreak in South Korea. The outbreak provides an excellent setting for the analysis because unlike the coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) situation, no mandatory lockdown was imposed during the outbreak, and the economic impact was also not large. Hence, reduced hospital visits are likely to reflect the public's intention to avoid hospitals to protect themselves from getting infected with MERS. Moreover, the outbreak did not spread to the entire country and vanished after a short period of time, allowing us to consider the affected regions as the treatment group and the other regions as the control group without much concern of confounding by other factors. The data come from a government agency, which assesses (national) health insurance claims made by hospitals, and hence cover all outpatient visits in the country. We find that people reduced outpatient visits by about 17% in response to the MERS outbreak, and the response was the most intense when new cases were reported most frequently.

ABSTRACT

The effects from rising temperatures, a symptom of climate change, have become a significant concern. This study finds that one additional day with a maximum temperature of 30-32 °C (86-89.6 °F), relative to a day with a temperature of 28-30 °C (82.4-86 °F), decreases the birth rate 9 months later by 0.24%, or 92 babies per month in South Korea. This result is robust to various specifications and samples. This study also found that the impact of the temperature bin did not vary according to the mother's characteristics, including education and age. That is, high temperature has no differential effect on mothers of different backgrounds. Finally, we found no significant temperature effect on birth outcomes, but we cannot rule out that children born 9 months after summer heat are a selected (healthy) group.

ABSTRACT

A gene (acas) designated as alpha-amylase was cloned from Arthrobacter chlorophenolicus A6. The multiple amino acid sequence analysis and functional expression of acas revealed that this gene really encoded an amylosucrase (ASase) instead of alpha-amylase. In fact, the recombinant enzyme exhibited typical ASase activity by showing both sucrose hydrolysis and glucosyltransferase activities. The purified enzyme has a molecular mass of 72 kDa and exhibits optimal hydrolysis activity at 45 degrees C and a pH of 8.0. The analysis of the oligomeric state of ACAS with gel permeation chromatography revealed that the ACAS existed as a monomer.
