ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: Nursing students suffer from stress more frequently than other students. The objective was to analyze the academic stressors that most affect new nursing students. DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study on new nursing students. FINDINGS: Two hundred and eighty-two students, 78% women, mean age of 21.46 (6.1) years. Giving presentations in class and lack of time for homework are the items that cause the greatest academic stress. Women had higher levels of academic stress, and higher levels of physical activity are related to lower academic stress. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Women have a higher level of academic stress. Doing sport is a protective factor that diminishes academic stress the more it is practiced. Encouraging nursing students to play sports could be beneficial in reducing their academic stress, with women benefiting the most.

ABSTRACT

Objective: to determine if Self-esteem, Trait anxiety and Quality of sleep are predictors of Satisfaction with life among Nursing students.Method: a descriptive, cross-sectional, quantitative study conducted in Nursing Students from the Universidad Católica de Valencia (n= 720), who answered a series of validated questionnaires in November, 2014. Descriptive analyses were conducted, as well as correlation tests, and a linear regression model to analyze the influence of independent variables (Self-esteem, Trait anxiety, and Quality of sleep) on the dependent variable (Satisfaction with life). The difference was considered significant if p< 0.05.Results: the study included 494 (68.6%) students; 77.7% (n= 384) were female. Statistically significant differences were observed in Satisfaction with life and Gender (p= 0.002), with higher values for women; in Trait anxiety regarding Gender (p= 0.001), with higher values in women; and in Self-esteem regarding the student year (p< 0.001), with higher values for third year students. The regression results showed that 26.9% (p< 0.01) of the variance in Satisfaction with life is explained by the three independent variables: Self-esteem, Trait anxiety, and Satisfaction with sleep. Conclusions: the study revealed that low scores in Trait anxiety and Quality of Sleep and high scores in Self-esteem were predictors of Satisfaction with life. Given the psychogenic nature of said variables, there was a discussion about the need for psychological care teams in Nursing schools.(AU)

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: The undergraduate thesis evaluation process is one of the most prevalent weak points in universities; the literature indicates the need to orient undergraduate thesis evaluators through specific training initiatives. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze the discrepancies between the grades awarded by undergraduate thesis supervisors and by the panel of faculty examiners, and the effect of training targeted to faculty members. DESIGN AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed during the 2015-2016 academic year in a Spanish Nursing School. SETTINGS AND PARTICIPANTS: We analyzed the mean grades from undergraduate thesis evaluation rubrics and the effects of a professional training course on the evaluation process. RESULTS: A total of 920 rubrics were analyzed. There were significant differences between the 460 grades awarded by the panel (7.63/10.0, standard deviation [SD] 1.57) and the 460 awarded by undergraduate thesis supervisors (8.62/10.0, SD 1.51). The results of the multivariate analysis of variance revealed significant differences according to participation in the training course, with a moderate effect size (ɳ2p = 0.063). CONCLUSIONS: A training initiative targeted to faculty involved in developing and evaluating undergraduate thesis reduces subjectivity and enhances fairness and quality in student evaluations.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The scientific literature has shown several psychoemotional predictors of test anxiety. However, the combined effect that psychoemotional variables relating to trait anxiety and academic burnout, and satisfaction with several personal aspects (self-esteem, life and sleep) have not been studied. The objective of this study was to determine if a group of psychoemotional variables (trait anxiety, self-esteem, academic burnout, satisfaction with life), sleep variables (subjective sleep satisfaction) and sociodemographic parameters (age) have a significant predictive effect on test anxiety in Nursing students. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A descriptive, cross-sectional, survey-based study carried out on a group of 494 nursing students. The data are analysed using correlation tests, mean comparison tests and a regression model. RESULTS: Regression analysis explains 39.3% of the variance (p < .01) of test anxiety due to statistically significant risk factors: trait anxiety, academic burnout, subjective sleep satisfaction, and age. Women showed a higher average in test anxiety than men. CONCLUSIONS: the study reveals that high scores on trait anxiety, academic burnout, sleep dissatisfaction and being younger were predictors of test anxiety. Women experienced greater test anxiety than men. The need for psychological care teams in Nursing faculties to reduce the incidence of test anxiety in students is discussed
