ABSTRACT

There is a resurgence of interest in the biology and clinical disease associated with Cimex lectularius, as the common bed bug is becoming more prevalent in well-developed countries. A patient presented with complaints of right ear irritation for several days' duration. A foreign body was lavaged from the ear canal, which proved to be an engorged nymphal form of Cimex lectularius. The parasite had apparently obtained a blood feed from the tympanic membrane. The resolution of the illness was unremarkable. This ectoparasite is currently re-emerging as a human pest worldwide. The case report herein describes a new variation of the dermatological manifestations from this infestation.

ABSTRACT

Yohimbine is a naturally sourced pharmacological agent, which produces hyperadrenergic physiological effects. In excess doses, it may typically cause agitation, anxiety, hypertension, and tachycardia. There is no conclusive evidence for this drug to be of benefit in bodybuilding, exercise tolerance, physical performance, or desirable alterations of body mass. Although tolerated generally well in low doses, the potential for dose-dependent toxicity should be recognized.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Secondary erythromelalgia can occur due to various underlying medical disorders or drug toxicity. MAIN OBSERVATIONS: A 75-year old male developed acute secondary erythromelalgia following the onset of rosuvastatin use and associated myopathy. The illness was reversible after discontinuation of the pharmacological agent. CONCLUSION: Secondary erythromelalgia may occur after rosuvastatin use, but this and other dermatological toxicities are rare.

ABSTRACT

The Canadian province of British Columbia has a luxurious environment, complete with the multitude of wildlife and insects, and would at first glance appear to be suitable for the transmission of diseases in nature communicable to humans. Despite this potential, such diseases are relatively uncommon, although several have the potential for serious consequences. Attention has been recently focused on hantavirus infection, water-borne toxoplasmosis and parasitic diarrheal diseases, cryptococcosis on Vancouver Island, and rabies. West Nile virus has not yet caused endemic human infection in this province as of 2008. We review the cumulative science in this area.

ABSTRACT

A severe iron deficiency state and problematic upper gastrointestinal irritation developed in an adult female who ingested pan masala that included fennel seed and betel nut. This illness illustrates the potential complexity of clinical presentation when mixtures of herbal contents are ingested. Clinical history-taking should routinely consider the potential importance of traditional customs.
