ABSTRACT

Here, we produce Ambrosia pollen source inventories for Italy that focuses on the periods before and after the accidental introduction of the Ophraella communa beetle. The inventory uses the top-down approach that combines the annual Ambrosia pollen index from a number of monitoring stations in the source region as well as Ambrosia ecology, local knowledge of Ambrosia infestation and detailed land cover information. The final inventory is gridded to a 5 × 5-km resolution using a stereographic projection. The sites with the highest European Infection levels were recorded in the north of Italy at Busto Arsizio (VA3) (European Infection level 2003-2014 = 52.1) and Magenta (MI7) (European Infection level 2003-2014 = 51.3), whereas the sites with the lowest (i.e. around 0.0) were generally located to the south of the country. Analysis showed that the European Infection level in all of Italy was significantly lower in 2013-2014 compared to 2003-2012, and this decrease was even more pronounced at the sites in the area where Ophraella communa was distributed. Cross-validations show that the sensitivity to the inclusion of stations is typically below 1% (for two thirds of the stations) and that the station Magenta (MI7) had the largest impact compared to all other stations. This is the first time that pollen source inventories from different temporal periods have been compared in this way and has implications for simulating interannual variations in pollen emission as well as evaluating the management of anemophilous plants like Ambrosia artemisiifolia.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relation between total serum IgE at 0.5-3 and 3-6 years, and the risk of allergic sensitisation and persistent wheezing up to 8 years of age. METHODS: Prospective follow up study of 45 infants with highly recurrent wheezing, no allergic symptoms, and negative skin tests. RESULTS: In the last follow up year, 15 children still suffered from wheezing. Five wheeze-free and four episodically wheezing children had become sensitised. No association was found between early (0.5-3 years) IgE z scores and the recurrence of wheezing during follow up, or atopic sensitisation. IgE z scores at 3-6 years were significantly higher in children with positive skin tests (p = 0.013), but were still not associated with recurrence of wheezing. CONCLUSIONS: In subjects with frequent early wheezing and no signs of atopy, early total serum IgE measurements are not predictive of outcome.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: This study was conducted to test the performance characteristics of cervical cancer screening by visual inspection of the cervix with acetic acid and iodine solution. METHODS: A total of 100 women were screened for cervical cancer by Pap smear and naked eye inspection of the cervix after application of acetic acid and iodine solution. RESULTS: Comparing visual inspection to the Pap test, a sensitivity of 85.7%, specificity of 78.5%, and concordance of 79% (p < .0011) was established. Comparing the Pap test with colposcopy, the corresponding figures were 42.9%, 92.3%, and 66.6% (p < .077), respectively. Visual inspection compared to colposcopy showed corresponding figures of 100%, 7.7%, and 55.5% (p = .48), respectively. Colposcopy and biopsy had an agreement of 100%. CONCLUSIONS: Visual inspection with acetic acid and iodine solution proved to be a reasonable method of screening for cervical cancer precursors.

ABSTRACT

Plasma salicylate concentration was monitored in 42 children on long-term salicylate therapy for rheumatoid arthritis. A given dose of salicylate per kg resulted in large variations in plasma levels, both between individuals and for a single individual at different times. The factors responsible for such variations were studied; in 6 cases urinary metabolites of salicylate were analysed. The relation between salicylate dosage and plasma half-life accounts for the fact that small changes in dosage can result in large changes in plasma concentration. The addition of corticosteroid or ACTH therapy results in lower plasma levels of salicylate, and necessitates higher dosage of salicylate. After the introduction of routine monitoring of plasma salicylate, the incidence of toxic symptoms fell sharply.
