ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This article examines the concept of service-learning (SL) in nursing practice and education as an opportunity to promote service, not only to individuals but also to the community. Nursing students conducted a SL nutrition education project at an elementary school in Alabama, a state in which the frequency of obesity is among the highest in the nation. Results suggest that SL enhances the critical thinking and cultural sensitivity of nursing students while helping to solidify nursing skills and values.

ABSTRACT

Inadequate blood pressure (BP) control in hypertension carries a major financial and public health burden. This study examined the efficacy of behavioral and lifestyle changes on BP control among African American adults, aged 55 years and older in a faith-based setting. The study was supported by clergy who helped to engage participants in interventions. Nurse-led diet and exercise teaching with BP monitoring led to lower BP readings over a 4-week intervention.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to develop and implement an evidence-based asthma education brochure for parents of pediatric asthma patients. DESIGN AND METHODS: The asthma patients were 4-12 years old. The number of office sick visits, emergency room visits, and hospitalizations related to asthma were evaluated post-education, and then compared with the previous months. RESULTS: Although there were no statistically significant results, there were notable trends that apply to asthma practice. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: As a result of the project, there were positive changes noted within the pediatric clinic related to asthma education, and additional suggestions for future opportunities were made.
