ABSTRACT

We present an analysis of the statistical properties and growth of the free on-line encyclopedia Wikipedia. By describing topics by vertices and hyperlinks between them as edges, we can represent this encyclopedia as a directed graph. The topological properties of this graph are in close analogy with those of the World Wide Web, despite the very different growth mechanism. In particular, we measure a scale-invariant distribution of the in and out degree and we are able to reproduce these features by means of a simple statistical model. As a major consequence, Wikipedia growth can be described by local rules such as the preferential attachment mechanism, though users, who are responsible of its evolution, can act globally on the network.

ABSTRACT

We study the mode-coupling theory for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in the strong-coupling regime, focusing on the long time properties. By a saddle point analysis of the mode-coupling equations, we derive exact results for the correlation function in the long-time limit-a limit that is hard to study using simulations. The correlation function at wave vector k in dimension d is found to behave asymptotically at time t as C(k,t) approximately A/k(d+4-2z)(Btk(z))(gamma/z)exp[-(Btk(z))(1/z)], with gamma=(d-1)/2, A a determined constant, and B a scale factor.

ABSTRACT

We study the mode-coupling approximation for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation in the strong-coupling regime. By constructing an ansatz consistent with the asymptotic forms of the correlation and response functions we determine the upper critical dimension d(c) = 4 and the expansion z = 2-(d-4)/4+O((4-d)2) around dc. We find the exact z = 3/2 value in d = 1, and estimate the values z approximately 1.62, z approximately 1.78 in d = 2, 3. The result dc = 4 and the expansion around dc are very robust and can be derived just from a mild assumption on the relative scale on which the response and correlation functions vary as z approaches 2.

ABSTRACT

The presence or absence of loops in the emergent transportation networks, that are characterized by a minimum overall cost, is shown to depend on the convexity of the cost function for the local transportation of material. Our results are directly applicable to a variety of situations across disciplines.

ABSTRACT

Energy minimization of both homogeneous and heterogeneous river networks shows that, over a range of parameter values, there are only three distinct universality classes. The exponents for all three classes of behavior are calculated.
