ABSTRACT

During 1993 blood samples were taken from 1251 women consecutively admitted to the Maternity Ward of the University of Parma. Samples were also taken from all the newborn babies. Absence of antipolio neutralizing antibodies in serum diluted 1/2 was shown in 6 mothers; 4 mothers for polio 1, 1 mother for polio 2 and 1 simultaneously for the poliovirus 1 and 3. If one considers only the cases of absence in undiluted serum, there were 2 negative subjects (0.16%). One of these was for antibodies against polio 1 and the other for antibodies against polio 2. In the cord blood samples the frequency of negative results in serum diluted 1/2 is higher: 42 in all with 13 babies negative for polio 1. 17 babies for polio 2, 8 for polio 3 and 2 babies simultaneously for polio 1 and polio 3. If one considers just the babies without antibodies even in undiluted serum, the fraction of seronegatives is 9 (0.7%) with 1 for polio 1, 6 for polio 2 and 1 for types 1 and 3. The Geometric Mean Titres of the antibodies are significantly higher in mothers born before 1964 (year of introduction of mass vaccination with OPV) compared with those born after that year. Likewise, the same phenomenon was observed in the respective children.

ABSTRACT

Venous aneurysms are rare vascular abnormalities and are often described in patients presenting with pulmonary embolism. The occasional real time ultrasound examination of an aneurysm of venous system in the popliteal fossa has focalized our interest in the diagnostic approach of this entity. In our experience and in the literature the physical examination is usually negative while the ultrasound gives high quality imaging combined to a Doppler evaluation, so this kind of diagnostic tool is desirable as a first approach. Both morphology and flow hemodynamics can be detected in a non invasive way. About wall aspect and surrounding tissue is underlined the MRT and CT scanning, the thrombotic extension is well inspected. The venography is the definitive study and should always be performed because it is the most reliable examination and specific until the sac of aneurysm is filled from the contrast. However this diagnostic modality is useful in the patient undergoing surgical repair.

ABSTRACT

The authors report their experience in treating three cases of popliteal artery entrapment. The analysis is based on the onset and the gap of time between the symptoms and the diagnostic certainty referred to the age of the patients. The diagnostic approach and follow-up is discussed including magnetic resonance of popliteal fossa. The surgical approach was constantly a shaped dorsal incision, and the reconstruction was performed in two cases with carbon coated dacron grafts of 6 mm diameter for the inadequacy of veins available. Any true aneurysm formation was identified. All grafts are patent on follow-up and the viability of the popliteal artery that underwent to simply myotomy is confirmed too by doppler ultrasound. Any recurrence of symptoms is recognized, in only one case was observed a concomitant entrapment in the other leg, not treated now is underlined. The advantage available for the patient in a physiokinetic therapy program, forerunner of a complete functional restoring, especially in athletic patients.

ABSTRACT

The authors report their experience of a case of non traumatic arteriovenous communication of the parotid region in an adult subject. They confirm that its manifestations in grown-ups are to be linked with an inactive angiodysplastic field. The diagnostic approaches in the face of a hybrid symptomatology and the therapeutic choices are described. Moreover, an aesthetically and functionally efficient surgical correction is proposed.

ABSTRACT

A new case of malignant atrophic papulosis (Köhlmeier-Degos disease) is reported. Vascular symptoms began at 17 months of age with cerebral ischaemia and progressive involvement of fingers and toes with torpid ulcers and apical necrotic amputations. At 6 years of age he developed chronic intestinal ischaemia with malabsorption and a new cerebral attack; in spite of anti-aggregant therapy the disease progressed and he died 7 months after diagnosis from a third cerebral ictus. Since the typical skin lesions of the disease were absent, the diagnosis was made on the basis of a pathological pattern of an occluded biopsied artery. The elder brother presents clinical and instrumental vascular involvement without cutaneous lesions and could be slightly affected.
