ABSTRACT

Rhabdomyolysis and acute tubular necrosis (ATN) are described in a patient with pyloric stenosis in whom severe hypokalemia developed due to repetitive vomiting. Furthermore, the importance of hypokalemia in the development of acute renal failure is emphasized.

ABSTRACT

The effect of peritoneal dialysis on plasma ascorbate levels was investigated in 32 patients suffering from end-stage renal disease. Our studies demonstrated a high peritoneal clearance of ascorbic acid resulting in a significant loss into the dialysate. The quantity of ascorbic acid lost by patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis was proportional to the predialysis ascorbic acid levels. Since the ascorbic acid lost from the plasma during peritoneal dialysis is not adequately replaced by dietary consumption of vitamin C, patients undergoing chronic peritoneal dialysis should receive ascorbic acid supplementation as an important part of their therapeutic regimen.

ABSTRACT

With non-invasive techniques we have studied the effects of oxyfedrine given i.v. in a dose of 8 mg on the systolic phase of cardiac cycle in 10 cardiologically healthy persons. We have found a strongly positive inotropic result and an augmentation of the stroke volume.

ABSTRACT

On the occasion of a double heterozygote case of D haemoglobinopathy/beta-thalassaemia (D thalassaemia) from Epirus (Greece), a family study was performed. It comprised 18 members, belonging to 3 generations, and revealed the presence of an additional D thalassaemia case, 4 D haemoglobinopathy heterozygotes, 5 beta-thalassaemia heterozygotes and 7 normal persons. The D thalassaemia cases were initially considered as Hb D homozygotes, according to their electrophoretic phenotype; the family study, however, showed the true nature of their stigmata. These patients presented with mild jaundice, splenomegaly and moderate anaemia, while the Hb D heterozygotes was asymptomatic.
