ABSTRACT

The relationship between cervical infection, cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN), cervical cancer risk factors and pregnancy was studied in a group of 460 pregnant women at the time of their first prenatal examination, each woman was examined by Papanicolaou smear collected with cervexbrush. A total of 301 women (65.4%) with diagnosis of cervical infection was recorded, 4 cases of human papilomavirus infection and two women with CIN I and CIN II. 40 patients were identified with significant risk factors for the development of CIN. CIN prevalence knowledge and pregnancy cervical infection should be considered to prevent the neonates, male partner and women potential risk for cervix invasive carcinoma.

ABSTRACT

We studied 118 patients with primary ovarian cancer at the Civil Hospital of Guadalajara over a ten-years period; to evaluate incidence, risk factors, clinical aspects, pathology and treatment. Twenty per cent of the patients were classified as stage I, 14 cases (11.8%) stage II, 37 (31%) were stage III and 43 (36%), stage IV. First-stage disease was confirmed by laparotomy; average age was fifty years old, commonly found in patients with invasive carcinoma. Seventy-seven patients received postoperative chemotherapy with cisplatin plus adriamycin and ciclophosphamide or vincrystin, and twelve radiotherapy. Thirteen were evaluated by second look laparotomy, 12 of whom were without clinical residual disease; in 6 we found macroscopic residual tumor. Follow-up was done in 89 patients, and there wasn't clinic disease through 12 to 48 months, with 21 months average. The clinicopathologic study showed predominance of serous and cystic surface epithelium tumours. The aspects of the gross anatomy of the malignant tumours are important from the viewpoint of the benign tumours differentiation.

ABSTRACT

Female, 5 years old; first pregnancy of term, eutocic, weight 3,100 g; breast fed, complete vaccination program. A bronchial pathology that was present seven months later, yielded with medical treatment. Her illness started on September, 1984 after sever trauma by horse kick, presenting with a tumor in left illiac fossa; there was pain, improved by analgesics; the tumor continued to grow up to 5 x 6 cm in diameter, painful on palpation, causing hospital admission. Thirty days later an ultrasonographic study reported an ovoid echogenic and echolucid mass of 6.5 cm in left ovary; an infra-umbilical laparotomy was performed, finding a left ovarian tumarration, ovoid, pink white, with vascular areas, 24 x 18 x 15 cm at maximal diameters, solid, smooth and bright; at section there was gray-white, nodular tissue, with cystic cavities, 0.5 cm. Electronic microscopy an immunochemistry study were carried out in order to confirm the diagnosis of juvenile granulosa cell tumor. The patient died seven months later.

ABSTRACT

A patient of 4 years of age, male is presented, that suffered from generalized pustulous psoriasis. The small response to prednisone and the aggravation of the symptomatology motivated the use of etretinate, in the dose of 1 mg/kg/day during six months obtaining the remission. Two years later he was seen again having minimal lesions of periumbilical psoriasis, observing delay in the growth, and in the radiological exam: periostic separation in the inferior part of femur, modeling alteration of the metaphysis, diffuse demineralization, slender bone, and a bone age of one and a half year. The authors advise over the necessity of controlling children that must receive etretinate, with clinic and periodic radiological exams.

ABSTRACT

A group of patients with acne rosacea was treated with 5 percent benzoyl peroxide acetone gel for four weeks and then with 10 percent benzoyl peroxide acetone gel for an additional four weeks. A parallel group of patients was treated with a matching placebo (acetone gel vehicle). At the end of the first four weeks of treatment the dropout rate due to lack of improvement was 23 and 63 percent for benzoyl peroxide acetone gel and placebo, respectively. Benzoyl peroxide acetone gel was superior to placebo with respect to improvement in the overall severity of the lesions when judged by photographs, and by reduction of erythema, papules, and pustules. Results after treatment with benzoyl peroxide acetone gel were better during weeks five to eight than during weeks one to four for all lesions except telangiectasia. Benzoyl peroxide acetone gel was superior to placebo when the overall responses were compared. In addition, the benzoyl peroxide acetone gel-treated group, but not the placebo-treated group, showed a significantly better response during weeks five to eight compared to weeks one to four.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Thirty-six patients were treated for single or multiple warts by intralesional injection of bleomycin sulfate (Blenoxane) at the base of the wart. The dose varied according to the size of the lesion and ranged from 0.2 to 0.8 mg per injection, up to a maximum total dose of 2 mg. The cure rates were as follows: 67 percent in plantar warts; 82 percent in ungual warts; and 80 percent in warts located elsewhere. The cure rate for all patients was 75 percent. The drug was well tolerated and the procedure readily accepted by the patients.

ABSTRACT

Twenty eight patients with various dermatological conditions were treated orally with the new aromatic derivate of retinoic acid, Ro 10-9359. The initial average dose was 48,3 mg/day and the maintenance dose was 26,6 mg/day. Duration of treatment ranged between 3 to 6 months. Evolution of erythema, infiltration and hyperkeratosis showed changes statistically significant (p < 0,05) and excellent to good results were obtained in 23 out of the 28 treated patients. On the basis of this study it is concluded that Ro 10-9359 is a promising drug for the treatment of several skin diseases, specially ichthyosis, Darier's disease, oral lichen planus, erythrokeratoderma variabilis and psoriasis. No serious side effects were reported; dryness of the lips, scaling of palms and soles, pruritus and thinning of the skin were the most common. In no case treatment was discontinued due to side effects. Laboratory controls did not show deviations from the normal values.

ABSTRACT

Two personal cases of Non venereal Lymphangitis of the Penis are presented in 23 and 28 men, and 38 cases from the literature are reviewed. This benign self-limiting condition is not too well known among dermatologists and urologists. The clinical changes, in particular noted by palpation are characteristic: painless firm cartilaginous cord freely movable behind the corona of glans penis in the coronary sulcus. The inguinal lymph nodes are not involved. The microscopic features in one of our patients demonstrated that the lesion results from cystic dilatation of secondary organization of the thrombus. The etiology is unknown. We favour the mecanical trauma as an important factor based on excessive sexual activity of the patients.
