ABSTRACT

Abstract Malignant phyllodes tumors (TF) are rare. Little has been described in the literature on angiosarcomatous differentiation of a malignant TF. We report the case of a 25 years old woman with a malignant phyllodes tumor of high grade with angiosarcomatous differentiation and axillary involvement. She was managed with modified radical mastectomy and adjuvant radiotherapy. A discussion of the case and review of the literature was made.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: Describe the knowledge that students between 12 and 17 years of age have against bullying, in an educational institution in the town of Ciudad Bolívar (Colombia) in the second semester of 2020. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A qualitative study was developed with descriptive exploratory approach, in order to understand experiences and perceptions of childhood and adolescence regarding bullying. A survey was carried out with 134 children between 12 and 17 years old and a focus group of 12 participants of different ages, belonging to the educational institution. The analysis and systematization of the information and coding was carried out using the Nvivo V.12 software. RESULTS: after the qualitative analysis, four categories emerged: definitions of bullying, why bullying is carried out, reactions to bullying and places where bullying is carried out. CONCLUSIONS: Despite recognizing through the categories how bullying is carried out, where it is carried out and its main effects, it was evidenced that the definition of bullying in this study as in the literature is not unique, the common aspect is which is a form of aggression. The handling of power is still recognized as the main cause of bullying, justified from economic reasons, physical appearance, gender and its development during school. From Nursing it is important to lead programs for the promotion of peaceful coexistence, prevention of the appearance of this phenomenon and its early recognition, in order to reduce serious consequences and contribute to our society in search of reconciliation that will be reflected in a peaceful coexistence in the classrooms; an aspect that will be reflected in future citizens who are respectful of differences and tolerant in search of a better country.

ABSTRACT

A soy protein-based supplement may optimize bone health, support physical growth, and stimulate bone formation. This study aimed to assess the effect of a daily soy protein supplement (SPS) on nutritional status, bone formation markers, lipid profile, and daily energy and macronutrient intake in children. One hundred seven participants (62 girls), ages 2 to 9, started the study and were randomly assigned to lunch fruit juice with (n = 57, intervention group) or without (n = 50, control group) addition of 45 g (230 Kcal) of a commercial SPS during 12 months; 84 children (51 girls, 33 boys) completed the study (45 and 39 intervention and control, respectively). Nutritional assessment included anthropometry and nutrient intakes; initial and final blood samples were taken; insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I), osteocalcin, bone specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP), insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3), cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) were analyzed. Statistically significant changes (p < .05) in body mass index and weight for age Z scores were observed between groups while changes in body composition were not. Changes in energy, total protein, and carbohydrate intakes were significantly higher in the intervention group (p < .01). Calorie intake changes were statistically significant between groups (p < .001), and BAP decreased in both groups, with values within normal ranges. Osteocalcin, IGFBP-3, and lipid profile were not different between groups. IGF-I levels and IGF/IGFBP-3 ratio increased significantly in both groups. In conclusion, changes in macronutrient and energy intake and nutritional status in the intervention group compared to control group may ensure harmonious and adequate bone health and development.

ABSTRACT

AIM: To evaluate the intake of a soy protein-based supplement (SPS) and its effects on the sexual maturation and nutritional status of prepubertal children who consumed it for a year. METHODS: Healthy children (n = 51) were recruited and randomly assigned to consume the lunch fruit juice with (n = 29) or without (n = 22) addition of 45 g of a commercial soy protein-based supplement (SPS) over 12 months. Nutritional assessment including anthropometry (bodyweight, height, triceps skinfold thickness, mid-upper arm circumference), body mass index (BMI), upper arm muscle area, arm muscle circumference, upper arm area, upper arm fat area data were derived from measures using usual procedures; age and gender-specific percentiles were used as reference. Sexual maturation was measured by Tanner stage. Isoflavones were quantified using liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry. RESULTS: Height, BMI/age, weight/age and height/age were significantly different (P < 0.05) at 12 months between girls in the control and intervention groups. Statistically significant differences between groups by gender (P < 0.05) were found in boys in the control group for the triceps skinfold thickness and fat area. Nutritional status was adequate according to the World Health Organization parameters. On average, 0.130 mg/kg body weight/day of isoflavones were consumed by children, which did not show significant differences in their sexual maturation. CONCLUSION: Consumption of SPS for 12 months did not affect sexual maturation or the onset of puberty in prepubertal boys and girls; however, it may have induced an increase in height, BMI/age, height/age and weight/age of the girls, associated with variations in fat-free mass.

ABSTRACT

Tropical forests in South America play a key role in the provision of ecosystem services such as carbon sinks, biodiversity conservation, and global climate regulation. In previous decades, Bolivian forests have mainly been deforested by the expansion of agricultural frontier development, driven by the growing demands for beef and other productions. In the mid-2000s the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) party rose to power in Bolivia with the promise of promoting an alternative development model that would respect the environment. The party passed the world's first laws granting rights to the environment, which they termed Mother Earth (Law No. 300 of 2012), and proposed an innovative framework that was expected to develop radical new conservation policies. The MAS conservationist discourse, policies, and productive practices, however, have since been in permanent tension. The government continues to guarantee food production through neo-extractivist methods by promoting the notion to expand agriculture from 3 to 13 million ha, risking the tropical forests and their ecosystem services. These actions raise major environmental and social concerns, as the potential impacts of such interventions are still unknown. The objective of this study is to explore an innovative land use modeling approach to simulate how the growing demand for land could affect future deforestation trends in Bolivia. We use the LuccME framework to create a spatially-explicit land cover change model and run it under three different deforestation scenarios, spanning from the present-2050. In the Sustainability scenario, deforestation reaches 17,703,786 ha, notably in previously deforested or degraded areas, while leaving forest extensions intact. In the Middle of the road scenario, deforestation and degradation move toward new or paved roads spreading across 25,698,327 ha in 2050, while intact forests are located in Protected Areas (PAs). In the Fragmentation scenario, deforestation expands to almost all Bolivian lowlands reaching 37,944,434 ha and leaves small forest patches in a few PAs. These deforestation scenarios are not meant to predict the future but to show how current and future decisions carried out by the neo-extractivist practices of MAS government could affect deforestation and carbon emission trends. In this perspective, recognizing land use systems as open and dynamic systems is a central challenge in designing efficient land use policies and managing a transition towards sustainable land use.

ABSTRACT

The aim was to report the sexual behavior of males in pregnancy, their experiences and meanings. 6 men participated, Mexico City, from 23 to 35 years old, married, with different education and occupation. They were interviewed about their sexual experiences during fetal development of their child. Each man was a case: suspension of sex to maintain a pregnancy difficult to obtain; interrupt sex to care for the couple during the pregnancy and not harm the baby; sex decreased with advancing pregnancy; disruption of sex in late pregnancy by preventing spontaneous abortion; improvement of their sex in pregnancy; and a special sexuality and sustained until birth. Men - based on experiences and meanings of love and erotic relationship with his partner, the pregnant body, the gestational development and emerging fatherhood - decided how to behave sexually with a sense during pregnancy.
