ABSTRACT
The occurrence of root resorption in orthodontically treated permanent incisors with partially formed roots was investigated using periapical radiographs taken before and after the orthodontic leveling in the mixed dentition. The mean age at the beginning of treatment was 9 years and the mean treatment time was 7.1 months. The findings showed that the orthodontic movement during root formation causes no root resorption. The longitudinal follow-up showed that incompletely formed roots developed normally.

A idéia central do presente artigo diz respeito aos efeitos induzidos pelo uso da grade palatina fixa, nos estágios de dentaduras decídua e mista, sobre a mordida aberta anterior. O tema näo é novo, mas a particularidade do artigo resume-se em dar ênfase a uma questäo relevante: o fortalecimento da musculatura peribucal, com exercícios programados e orientados pela fonoaudiologia, visando a maior efetividade no fechamento da mordida aberta anterior. A proposta terapêutica interdisciplinar, sugerida aqui, propöe a instalaçäo da grade palatina fixa seguida imediatamente pelo início da fisioaterapia voltada para a adequaçäo da musculatura peribucal. A elaboraçäo deste planejamento estratégico deve favorecer, sobretudo, aqueles pacientes com hipotonicidade da musculatura peribucal. Assim, a fonoaudiologia, trabalhando em parceria com a ortodontia, potencializa o processo corretivo da má oclusäo, ao valorizar a tonicidade da musculatura peribucal
