ABSTRACT

Albendazole (ABZ), a benzimidazole widely used to control gastrointestinal parasites, is poorly soluble in water, resulting in variable and incomplete bioavailability. This has favored the appearance ABZ-resistant nematodes and, consequently, an increase in its clinical ineffectiveness. Among the pharmaceutical techniques developed to increase drug efficacy, cyclodextrins (CDs) and other polymers have been extensively used with water-insoluble pharmaceutical drugs to increase their solubility and availability. Our objective was to prepare ABZ formulations, including ß-cyclodextrin (ßCD) or hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin (HPßCD), associated or not to the water-soluble polymer polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP). These formulations had their solubility and anthelmintic effect both evaluated in vitro. Also, their anthelmintic efficacy was evaluated in lambs naturally infected with gastrointestinal nematodes (GIN) through the fecal egg count (FEC) reduction test. In vitro, the complex ABZ/HPßCD had higher solubility than ABZ/ßCD. The addition of PVP to the complexes increased solubility and dissolution rates more effectively for ABZ/HPßCD than for ABZ/ßCD. In vivo, 48 lambs naturally infected with GIN were divided into six experimental groups: control, ABZ, ABZ/ßCD, ABZ/ßCD-PVP, ABZ/HPßCD, and ABZ/HPßCD-PVP. Each treated animal received 10 mg/kg of body weight (based on the ABZ dose) for three consecutive days. After 10 days of the last administered dose, treatment efficacy was calculated. The efficacy values were as follows: ABZ (70.33%), ABZ/ßCD (85.33%), ABZ/ßCD-PVP (82.86%), ABZ/HPßCD (78.37%), and ABZ/HPßCD-PVP (43.79%). In vitro, ABZ/HPßCD and ABZ/HPßCD-PVP had high solubility and dissolution rates. In vivo, although the efficacies of ABZ/ßCD, ABZ/ßCD-PVP, and ABZ/HPßCD increased slightly when compared to pure ABZ, this increase was not significant (P > 0.05).

ABSTRACT

The octopus Octopus cf. vulgaris is a potential species to diversify aquaculture. Due to absence of balanced commercial diet, growth of the O. cf. vulgaris is based on natural diet with local and low-cost inputs. In Brazil, studies on experimental octopus ongrowing are recent and there is little available data. We evaluated the performance, survival and food consumption of O. vulgaris fed on mussel Perna perna for 20 days. Six octopuses with initial weight of 415±12.73g (mean±standard deviation) were divided into two groups (n=3 octopuses/group) according to the diet: MC Group (frozen mussels) and MV Group (live mussels). The Weight Gain of octopuses was 273.33±94.52g and 340.00±26.46g; the Absolute Growth Rate was 13.67±4.73 and 17.00±1.32g.dia-1 and the Specific Growth Rate of 2.95±0.58 and 2.64±0.37%.day-1 to MC and MV groups, respectively. There was no significant difference in performance between groups and the survival rate was 100%. Octopuses well accepted both diets and despite the amount of frozen mussels (129±31) was higher than in live mussels (100±19), there was no significant difference regarding the consumption between groups. Our results demonstrate that the mussel Perna perna can be used frozen or live as monodiet in O. cf. vulgaris ongrowing.(AU)

ABSTRACT

The inexistence of nutritionally adequate diets in paralarval rearing is the main bottleneck for commercial production of the common octopus Octopus cf. vulgaris. We report the feeding behavior of O. vulgaris Type II paralarvae fed on Artemia sp (0.1 individual. mL-1) nauplii enriched with microalgae Isocrysis galbana and Pavlova lutheri microalgae from 0 to 7 Day After Hatching (DAH).; metanauplii enriched with microalgae and DHA SELCO® lipid emulsion from the 8 DAH. The paralarvae showed active swimming and predation by the 14 DAH, feeding in the most superficial portion of the water column. From the 15 DAH, the paralarvae remained near the bottom and there a decrease in the consumption of artemia was observed. The mortality observed from the 18 DAH and mass mortality of paralarvae on 20 DAH can be attributed mainly to the nutritional composition of the diet. Studies analyzing the biochemical composition and ontogeny of the digestive system during the early life stages should shed some light on the running for an appropriate feeding protocol to the paralarval rearing.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) is a tumor associated antigen over-expressed in 20-30% of cases of breast cancer. Passive immune therapy with HER2-directed monoclonal antibodies (mabs) has changed the natural history of this subset of breast tumors both in the localized and metastatic settings. The safety and efficacy of HER2 vaccines have been assessed in early phase clinical trials but to date clinically relevant results in late phase trials remain an elusive target. Here, we review the recent translational discoveries related to the interactions between the adaptive immune system and the HER2 antigen in breast cancer, results of published clinical trials, and future directions in the field of HER2 vaccine treatment development.

ABSTRACT

We aimed to compare measurements of speed and blood flow parameters obtained manually and automatically in the uterine arteries of pregnant ewes. Eighteen Santa Inês ewes, confirmed to be pregnant, were followed every 2 weeks until parturition. The systolic peak (PS), end diastolic velocity (ED), maximum and average speed in the cardiac cycle (TAMAX and TAMEAN, respectively), pulsatility index (PI), resistance index (RI) and the systole/diastole (S/D) ratio and body flow volume (BFV) was measured. We began the wave evaluation automatically, then the observer manually marked the beginning and end of the wave. To determine the differences between manual and automatic methods, a t-test was used for each of the study variables (PS, ED, TAMAX, TAMEAN, PI, RI, S/D, and BFV), with p<0.05 considered significant. Both methods were found to be effective for producing estimates for the variables analyzed. With the exception of the IP, IR and S/D (p<0.05), no significant differences were found between the methods. The manual method underestimated the PI (1.00±0.21×1.04±0.20), S/D (2.51±0.43×2.40±0.44) and RI (0.57±0.07×0.59±0.07) compared with the automatic method (p<0.05). The weakest correlations between methods were identified for the PI, RI and S/D variables (p<0.001). Manual evaluation allowed more accurate identification of the beginning and end of the systole and diastole, which may influence the outcome of some variables.

ABSTRACT

Background: Soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) overexpress vascular endothelial growth factors (VEGF) and VEGF-receptors (VEGFR) activation have been associated with tumor aggressiveness. Tivozanib is a potent small molecule tyrosine kinase inhibitor against VEGFR1-3, with activity against PDGFRα/ß and cKIT. The primary endpoint of this study was progression free survival (PFS) rate at 16 weeks. Secondary end points were overall survival (OS), response rate, safety and correlative studies. Patients and methods: A Simon two-stage phase II trial was performed using tivozanib given orally at 1.5 mg daily, 3 week on 1 week off on a 28 day cycle until disease progression or intolerable toxicity. Results: Fifty-eight patients were enrolled and treated with tivozanib. Leiomyosarcoma was the most common STS histological type in our cohort (47%) and 27 patients (46%) had received at least 3 lines of therapy prior to study entry. Up to 24 patients (41%) had prior VEGF targeted therapies. Partial response and stable disease were observed in 2 (3.6%) and 30 (54.5%) patients. The 16 week PFS rate was 36.4% [95% confidence interval (CI) 23.7-49.1] and a median PFS of 3.5 months (95% CI 1.8-3). Median OS observed was 12.2 months (95% CI 8.1-16.8). The most frequent all grade toxicities were fatigue (48.3%), hypertension (43.1%), nausea (31%) and diarrhea (27.6%). The most common grade three toxicity was hypertension (22.4%). Correlative studies demonstrate no correlation between the expression of VEGFR 1, 2 or 3, PDGFRα/ß or FGF, and activity of tivozanib. Conclusion: Tivozanib was well tolerated and showed antitumor activity with a promising median PFS and PFS rate at 4 months in a heavily pretreated population of metastatic STSs. Our results support further studies to assess the clinical efficacy of tivozanib in STS. Clinical Trial Number: NCT01782313.

In Brazil, some studies have indicated that Neorickettsia risticii circulates in horses, but it is unclear which are the possible intermediate vectors of this bacterium in the country. The aim of this study was to use molecular techniques in order to analyze the presence of N. risticii in snails and larval stages of trematodes in farms in a region with a history of seroreactive horses towards this bacterium, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Convenience sampling was used in the studied region. The collected snails were exposed to incandescent light (60W) for 2-4 hours in order to investigate trematodes in larval forms. Deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) was extracted from snail tissue and trematode. Real-time PCR (qPCR) technique was used to investigate the presence of a 16S rRNA gene fragment of N. risticii. Snail specimens (n=410) were collected from 11 horse-breeding farms, and the following species were identified: Melanoides tuberculata, Pomacea sp., Biomphalaria tenagophila, Physa acuta, Drepanotrema anatinum and Biomphalaria straminea. Only 3.17% (n=13/410) of the collected snails were infected by trematodes. The cercariae obtained from these snails were classified as Megalourous cercariae, Pleurolophocercus cercariae and Furcocercous cercariae. There was no amplification of the target DNA of N. risticii in the snail and trematode samples tested by qPCR. Based on these data, the transmission of N. risticii by trematodes using these snail species in this region does not appear to occur or occurs at very low rates. Thus, further studies are needed in order to clarify which species of invertebrate hosts are infected by this bacterium and potentially participate in the transmission chain of equine neorickettsiosis in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.(AU)


No Brasil, estudos apontam a circulação de Neorickettsia risticii em equinos, contudo não estão claros quais os possíveis vetores intermediários dessa bactéria no país. O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar a presença de N. risticii, utilizando-se técnicas moleculares, em caramujos e estágios larvais de trematódeos em propriedades rurais de uma região com histórico de equinos sororreativos para essa bactéria, no Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Uma amostragem por conveniência foi utilizada na região de estudo. Os caramujos coletados foram expostos à luz incandescente (60W) durante duas-quatro horas para a investigação de trematódeos nas formas larvais. A extração de ácido desoxirribonucleico (DNA) foi realizada em tecidos de caramujos e trematódeos. A técnica de PCR em tempo real (qPCR) foi utilizada para investigar a presença de um fragmento do gene 16S rRNA de N. risticii. Foram coletados 410 espécimes de caramujos de 11 propriedades com criações de equinos, sendo identificadas as seguintes espécies: Melanoides tuberculata, Pomacea sp., Biomphalaria tenagophila, Physa acuta, Drepanotrema anatinum e Biomphalaria straminea. Apenas 3,17% (n=13/410) dos caramujos identificados estavam infectados por trematódeos. As cercárias obtidas desses caramujos foram classificadas em Megalourous cercariae, Pleurolophocercus cercariae e Furcocercous cercariae. Não foi observada a amplificação do DNA-alvo de N. risticii, por meio da qPCR, em nenhuma das amostras de caramujos e trematódeos testadas. Com base nesses dados, a transmissão de N. risticii por trematódeos que utilizam as espécies de caramujos nessa região parece não ocorrer ou ocorre a taxas muito reduzidas. Portanto, novos estudos são necessários para elucidar quais espécies de hospedeiros invertebrados se infectam por essa bactéria e potencialmente participam da cadeia de transmissão da neorickettsiose equina no estado do Rio de Janeiro, Brasil.(AU)

ABSTRACT

Endotracheal tube (ETT) cuff pressure management is an essential part of airway management in intubated and mechanically ventilated patients. Both under- and over-inflation of the ETT cuff can lead to patient complications, with an ideal pressure range of 20-30 cmH2O defined. A range of techniques are employed to ensure adequate ETT cuff inflation, with little comparative data. We performed an observational cross-sectional study in a tertiary metropolitan ICU, assessing the relationship between the minimal leak test and cuff manometry. Forty-five mechanically ventilated patients, over a three-month period, had ETT cuff manometry performed at the same time as their routine cuff maintenance (minimal leak test). Bedside nurse measurements were compared with investigator measurements. At the endpoint of cuff inflation, 20 of 45 patients (44%) had cuff pressures between 20 and 30 cmH2O; 11 of 45 patients (24%) had cuff pressures <20 cmH2O; 14 of 45 patients (31%) had cuff pressures ≥30 cmH2O. Univariate analysis demonstrated an association between both patient obesity and female gender requiring less ETT cuff volume (P=0.008 and P <0.001 respectively), though this association was lost on multivariate analysis. No association was demonstrated between any measured variables and cuff pressures. Inter-operator reliability in performing the minimal leak test showed no evidence of bias between nurse and investigators (Pearson coefficient = 0.897). We conclude the minimal leak test for maintenance of ETT cuffs leads to both over- and under-inflation, and alternative techniques, such as cuff manometry, should be employed.

ABSTRACT

In modern pig farming, the search for systems that promote environmental quality and welfare is an important issue. In this sense, the present study evaluated the effects of environmental enrichment on the performance and behavior of piglets. In a completely randomized block design, 32 piglets (7.43kg mean weight), weaned at 28 days of age, were distributed into four treatments (control without enrichment, environmental enrichment with wood shavings as bedding; environmental enrichment with hanging toys and environmental enrichment with wood shavings + hanging toys). Four repetitions were performed for each treatment, with two animals per experimental unit. The instant scan sampling technique was used to record the behavior of each piglet for 20h. Animals receiving environmental enrichment with wood shavings + hanging toys were heavier at 70 days (P=0.02), exhibited higher total and daily weight gain (P=0.04 and P=0.02, respectively) and better feed conversion (P=0.02). Environmental enrichment increased the interaction of animals with the environment, allowing them to exhibit natural behaviors.


Na suinocultura moderna, a busca de sistemas que promovam a qualidade e o bem-estar do meio ambiente é uma questão importante. Nesse sentido, o presente estudo avaliou os efeitos do enriquecimento ambiental sobre o desempenho e o comportamento de leitões. Em um delineamento em blocos ao acaso, 32 leitões (7,43kg de peso médio), desmamados aos 28 dias de idade, foram distribuídos em quatro tratamentos (controle sem enriquecimento, enriquecimento ambiental com cama de maravalha, enriquecimento com móbiles e cama + móbiles). Quatro repetições foram realizadas para cada tratamento, com dois animais por unidade experimental. A técnica de amostragem de varredura instantânea foi usada para registrar o comportamento de cada leitão, totalizando 20h. Os animais que receberam enriquecimento ambiental com cama + móbiles foram mais pesados aos 70 dias (P = 0,02), apresentaram maior ganho de peso total e diário (P = 0,04 e P = 0,02, respectivamente) e melhor conversão alimentar (P = 0,02). O enriquecimento ambiental aumentou a interação dos animais com o meio ambiente, o que lhes permite exibir comportamentos típicos.

The inclusion of industrial byproducts such as citrus pulp in the composition of animal diets has been widely recommended due to sustainability aspects and their high level of carbohydrates. Limonene is found in citrus pulp and has been described elsewhere as a major compound of citrus essential oils with excellent anthelmintic activity. The objective of this study was to evaluate the parasitological parameters of lambs artificially infected (Experiment 1) with Haemonchus contortus and naturally infected (Experiment 2) by gastrointestinal nematodes, fed diets with dehydrated citrus pulp or silage of moist orange pulp. Both experiments had three treatments (C: control, DP: diet+dehydrated citrus pulp, and MP: diet+silage of moist orange pulp). The diets were isoproteic (11% crude protein) and the concentrate was corrected every 14 days according to animal weight. Parasitological parameters were evaluated for both experiments each 14 days (body weight, body condition; fecal egg counts-FEC, egg hatch assay-EHA, coproculture, and packed cell volume-PCV). Analysis of variance (GLM of the SAS software) was performed with repeated measures in time, and the means were compared by the Tukey test. Gas chromatography with mass spectrometry was used to detect constituents of dry or moist citrus pulp. Dehydrated citrus pulp had 0.02% essential oil (major compounds were 85.9% limonene and 7.6% valencene). Moist orange pulp contained 1.5% essential oil (major compounds were 65.5% limonene and 31.2% alpha- and gamma-terpineol). In both experiments, the weight gain among the treatments was similar (p>0.05) demonstrating that both moist and dehydrated orange pulp can be used to replace corn kernels to feed infected lambs. The supplementation with orange pulp did not decrease natural or artificial infections of gastrointestinal nematodes according to the FEC results (p>0.05). However, PCV increased from animals fed dehydrated and moist pulp in natural infection (Experiment 2, p<0.05) in comparison with the control group. In addition, the consumption of the dehydrated citrus pulp from animals infected with H. contortus (Experiment 1) caused lower hatching rates after 42 days of consumption (p<0.05), suggesting a tendency to shed fewer eggs to the environment.

Avaliou-se o efeito do ibuprofeno administrado uma hora antes da inovulação de embriões bovinos, com o objetivo de melhorar a taxa de prenhez. Após a avaliação da resposta ao protocolo de sincronização do estro, 76 fêmeas selecionadas como receptoras de embriões foram distribuídas em três grupos (G) experimentais: G1 (n=25) receptoras usadas como controle, G2 (n=30) receptoras que receberam ibuprofeno 5mg/kg, I.M, uma hora antes da inovulação dos embriões, e G3 (n=21) receptoras que receberam uma matriz polimérica de liberação controlada de ibuprofeno administrado por via subcutânea. As taxas de prenhez foram de 16 por cento (4/25), 43,3 por cento (13/30) e 14,2 por cento (3/21), para G1, G2 e G3, respectivamente. Observou-se diferença (P<0,024) na taxa de prenhez do G2 quando comparado ao G1 e ao G3. A administração do ibuprofeno por via intramuscular uma hora antes da inovulação dos embriões resultou em melhor taxa de prenhez em receptoras da raça Nelore.


The effect of the administered ibuprofen was evaluated one hour before the embryo transfer of bovine embryos in order to improve pregnancy rates. After evaluating the response to protocol synchronization of estrus, 76 Females selected as the recipients of embryos were distributed into three experimental groups: G1 (n = 25) surrogate cows used as control, G2 (n = 30) surrogate cows that received 5mg/kg ibuprofen, IM, one hour before the embryo transfer, and G3 (n = 20) surrogate cows that received an array polymeric release of controlled ibuprofen subcutaneously administered. The pregnancy rates were 16 percent (4/25), 43.3 percent (13/30), and 14.2 percent (3/21) for G1, G2, and G3, respectively. There was statistical difference (P<0.024) on pregnancy rate of G2, in comparison with those of G1 and G3. The administration of ibuprofen intramuscularly one hour before the embryo transfer resulted in better pregnancy rate in Nellore surrogate cows.

The daily live weight gain (DLWG), faecal nematode egg counts (FEC), and packed cell volume (PCV) of Suffolk, Ile de France and Santa Inês ewe lambs were evaluated fortnightly for 56 days in the dry season (winter) and 64 days in the rainy season (summer) of 2001-2002. The animals were distributed in two similar groups, one located on Aruana and the other on Tanzania grass (Panicum maximum), in rotational grazing system at the Instituto de Zootecnia, in Nova Odessa city (SP), Brazil. In the dry season, 24 one-year-old ewe lambs were used, eight of each breed, and there was no difference (p > 0.05) between grasses for DLWG (100 g/day), although the Suffolk had higher values (p < 0.05) than the other breeds. In the rainy season, with 33 six-month-old ewe lambs, nine Suffolk, eight Ile de France and 16 Santa Inês, the DLWG was not affected by breed, but it was twice as great (71 g/day, p < 0.05) on Aruana as on Tanzânia grass (30 g/day). The Santa Inês ewe lambs had the lowest FEC (p < 0.05) and the highest PCV (p < 0.05), confirming their higher resistance to Haemonchus contortus, the prevalent nematode in the rainy season. It was concluded that the best performance of ewe lambs on Aruana pastures in the rainy season is probably explained by their lower nematode infection owing to the better protein content of this grass (mean contents 11.2% crude protein in Aruana grass and 8.7% in Tanzania grass, p < 0.05) which may have improved the immunological system with the consequence that the highest PCV (p < 0.05) observed in those animals.

ABSTRACT

Human papillomavirus (HPV) causes cervical, vulvar, and vaginal cancers, precancerous dysplasia, and genital warts. We report data for the longest efficacy evaluation to date of a prophylactic HPV vaccine. In total, 552 women (16-23 years) were enrolled in a randomised, placebo-controlled study of a quadrivalent HPV 6/11/16/18 L1 virus-like-particle vaccine with vaccination at months 0, 2, and 6. At regular intervals through 3 years, subjects underwent gynaecologic examination, cervicovaginal sampling for HPV DNA, serum anti-HPV testing, and Pap testing, with follow-up biopsy as indicated. A subset of 241 subjects underwent two further years of follow-up. At 5 years post enrollment, the combined incidence of HPV 6/11/16/18-related persistent infection or disease was reduced in vaccine-recipients by 96% (two cases vaccine versus 46 placebo). There were no cases of HPV 6/11/16/18-related precancerous cervical dysplasia or genital warts in vaccine recipients, and six cases in placebo recipients (efficacy = 100%; 95% CI:12-100%). Through 5 years, vaccine-induced anti-HPV geometric mean titres remained at or above those following natural infection. In conclusion, a prophylactic quadrivalent HPV vaccine was effective through 5 years for prevention of persistent infection and disease caused by HPV 6/11/16/18. This duration supports vaccination of adolescents and young adults, which is expected to greatly reduce the burden of cervical and genital cancers, precancerous dysplasia, and genital warts.

In order to correlate the findings of two serological tests, double immunodiffusion (IDD) and immunoblotting (IB), with the clinical diagnosis and follow-up of paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM), 325 serum samples from PCM patients were tested at the beginning of specific therapy and after its completion. Group I included 245 PCM patients at the onset of symptoms without treatment. In 221 cases (90.2%) the IDD showed positive reactions and in 24 (9.8%) the results were negative. Of the 24 IDD negative samples, 23 were investigated by IB and were positive. Group II included 80 PCM patients under follow-up after treatment. There were four cases of relapse in which the IDD and IB tests were positive (100%). Among the 76 cases with inactive mycotic infection, the IDD was negative in 71.2% and positive in 28.8%; the IB was positive in all cases (100%). The control group (Group III) included 27 samples from patients with other mycoses, tuberculosis and from healthy individuals. All showed negative IDD tests but positive reactions with IB, which could be abolished by serum dilutions without altering the PCM reactivity. Therefore, the utilization of the IB, an immunoenzymatic method for the diagnosis of PCM, raised the sensitivity to 100%.

ABSTRACT

We consider the categorization problem in a Hopfield network with an extensive number of concepts p = alpha N and trained with s examples of weight lambda tau, tau = 1,...,s in the presence of synaptic noise represented by a dimensionless "temperature" T. We find that the retrieval capacity of an example with weight lambda 1, and the corresponding categorization error, depend also on the arithmetic mean lambda m of the other weights. The categorization process is similar to that in a network trained with Hebb's rule, but for lambda 1/lambda m > 1 the retrieval phase is enhanced. We present the phase diagram in the T-alpha plane, together with the de Almeida-Thouless line of instability. The phase diagrams in the alpha-s plane are discussed in the absence of synaptic noise and several values of the correlation parameter b.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To review the effects of soy on blood lipids and to provide guidance on the clinical relevance of soy's health effects with respect to hyperlipidemia. DATA SOURCES: Clinical literature accessed through MEDLINE and EMBASE (1966-November 1999). Key search terms included soy, isoflavone, phytoestrogen, cholesterol, and blood lipids. DATA SYNTHESIS: A review of studies evaluating the effects of soy protein on blood lipids was undertaken. Soy may be an alternative for patients seeking modest reductions in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (<10%). CONCLUSIONS: Soy can improve blood lipid parameters in both normocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic subjects, although the use of soy alone may not allow patients with hyperlipidemia to achieve target lipid parameters, as indicated by the National Cholesterol Education Program. Further study is warranted for the use of soy in combination with traditional hyperlipidemic medications.

ABSTRACT

The authors report a case of paraplegia caused by a lumbar intraspinal paracoccidioidomycosis (PCM) granuloma. Clinical neurological diagnosis of a compressive spinal cord lesion was confirmed by spinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Patient was submitted to surgery with total excision of the lesion. Histopathological analysis confirmed the diagnosis of PCM. Patient is on sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim combined with fluconazole and is experiencing positive neurological recovery.

ABSTRACT

A cross-sectional epidemiological survey for paracoccidioidomycosis and histoplasmosis, including skin tests with paracoccidioidin and histoplasmin, physical examinations and X-rays, was conducted among three Tupí-Mondé Amerindian populations from Brazilian Amazonia. The study followed the diagnosis of an increasing number of cases of paracoccidioidomycosis among the Suruí in recent years. Positivity rates to paracoccidioidin and histoplasmin (> or = 5 mm of intradermal induration 24-48 h post-injection) were 43.8% and 78.7% for the Suruí, 6.4% and 5.8% for the Gavião and 14.9% and 80.5% for the Zoró, respectively. There was no significant difference in the results for males and females but marked differences were noted across age groups. The results of the univariate analysis were confirmed after adjustment for confounding variables by multiple logistic regression analysis: paracoccidioidin positivity was relatively high in the Suruí and histoplasmin positivity was relatively high in the Suruí and Zoró. The Suruí's greater exposure to Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, the causative agent of paracoccidioidomycosis, is probably associated with their adoption of new subsistence practices. The epidemiology of this mycosis among the Tupí-Mondé appears to be related to the environmental and socio-economic changes taking place in Amazonia.
