ABSTRACT

Falcarindiol (FaDOH) is a cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory polyacetylenic oxylipin found in food plants of the carrot family (Apiaceae). FaDOH has been shown to activate PPARγ and to increase the expression of the cholesterol transporter ABCA1 in cells, both of which play an important role in lipid metabolism. Thus, a common mechanism of action of the anticancer and antidiabetic properties of FaDOH may be due to a possible effect on lipid metabolism. In this study, the effect of sub-toxic concentration (5 µM) of FaDOH inside human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) was studied using white light microscopy and Raman imaging. Our results show that FaDOH increases lipid content in the hMSCs cells as well as the number of lipid droplets (LDs) and that this can be explained by increased expression of PPARγ2 as shown in human colon adenocarcinoma cells. Activation of PPARγ can lead to increased expression of ABCA1. We demonstrate that ABCA1 is upregulated in colorectal neoplastic rat tissue, which indicates a possible role of this transporter in the redistribution of lipids and increased formation of LDs in cancer cells that may lead to endoplasmic reticulum stress and cancer cell death.

ABSTRACT

The authors describe a unique presentation and long-term management of a rare craniovertebral abnormality in a patient presenting to their institution. This 10-year-old girl presented with right-sided facial pain and subjective dysesthesia of the chest wall without evidence of cervical myelopathy. She was found to have extensive cervicothoracic syringomyelia secondary to compression at the foramen magnum by hypertrophic occipital condyles. Posterior decompression and medial condylectomy was performed, with significant radiological and clinical improvement over the next 5 years of follow-up. The authors discuss the clinical pathophysiology and operative techniques used.

ABSTRACT

Spinal neuroglial cysts are rare. Although there are a few case reports, none describe such cysts within the sacral canal. The authors describe the case of a 29-year-old man who presented with symptoms of urinary retention over a period of several months. Imaging of his lumbar spine demonstrated the presence of an extradural cystic lesion within the sacral canal. He underwent resection of the cyst, with complete reversal of his bladder impairment. Histopathological studies confirmed the presence of a sacral neuroglial cyst.

ABSTRACT

The occurrence of subdural cerebrospinal fluid collections and ventricular dilatation (external hydrocephalus) after foramen magnum decompression is extremely rare. The authors report on a 37-year-old man who developed symptomatic subdural fluid collections (SFC) after uncomplicated foramen magnum decompression for Chiari I-syringomyelia complex. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging revealed a supratentorial SFC with prominent midline shift. In addition, bilateral infratentorial SFCs extending supratentorially through the tentorial notch, pseudomeningocele and initial shrinkage of the syrinx were observed. Few days after evacuation of supratentorial collection, the patient experienced increasing headache and a computerized tomography scan demonstrated a contralateral subdural collection as well as ventricular dilatation. A programmable ventriculoperitoneal shunt was placed with resolution of supratentorial collection and progressive improvement of infratentorial collections and pseudomeningocele. Although previous reports described the occurrence of extra-axial fluid collections and hydrocephalus after foramen magnum decompression for Chiari malformation, to our knowledge, this is the only report of acute external hydrocephalus after foramen magnum decompression requiring urgent evacuation of SFC in order to reduce the mass effect.

ABSTRACT

Spinal meningiomas are reported infrequently as pure epidural tumors, and they are rarely located at the caudal end of the spine. The unique combination of a wholly epidural tumor confined entirely to the sacral canal has not been previously described. The authors describe the case of a 29-year-old man who presented with coccygeal and left-sided S2-4 dermatomal pain. Examination confirmed sensory loss in the same distribution. A magnetic resonance image revealed an enhancing mass lesion in the sacral canal scalloping the bone at S-2 and S-3. An apparent complete resection was performed. Intraoperatively the authors observed an entirely epidural tumor with a small dural attachment at the most caudal end of the thecal sac. Histological examination confirmed that the tumor was an atypical meningioma. A local recurrence developed within 1 year of surgery, and the patient underwent a hemisacrectomy for tumor removal. An additional recurrence in the lumbosacral spine and multiple pulmonary metastases developed thereafter. In addition to the unique nature of this case, the authors also observed a tumor behaving in a far more aggressive fashion than its histological findings would suggest. This adds to the differential diagnosis of tumors occurring in the sacral canal.

ABSTRACT

Advances in the phenology of organisms are often attributed to climate change, but alternatively, may reflect a publication bias towards advances and may be caused by environmental factors unrelated to climate change. Both factors are investigated using the breeding dates of 25 long-term studied populations of Ficedula flycatchers across Europe. Trends in spring temperature varied markedly between study sites, and across populations the advancement of laying date was stronger in areas where the spring temperatures increased more, giving support to the theory that climate change causally affects breeding date advancement.
