ABSTRACT

Malignant tumors represent one of the most important medical problems, due to the increased mortality rate, life quality alteration, and the lack of a curable treatment. Skin neoplasm ranks first most frequent top primary tumor, summing a higher percentage than any other neoplastic location. It is also known, the fact that, in our country, gastric adenocarcinoma represents the most encountered tumor of the digestive tube. Our case, male, 49-year-old, comes from a rural area, was diagnosed with and surgically treated, within one year, for gastric adenocarcinoma (intestinal type gastric carcinoma) and squamous cell carcinoma (at the level of the lower lip). A high number of etiologic agents are associated with different risks in developing a carcinoma with squamous cells at the level of the head and the neck, and a gastric carcinoma (our patient is known to suffer from gastric ulcer and Helicobacter pylori, for more than 20 years, and he is a chronic consumer of alcohol and nicotine).

ABSTRACT

More than one third of all diagnosed cancer cases from all over the world are skin cancers, and the majorities are basal cell carcinomas. The incidence of skin tumors around the world is growing, the main concern being the increased frequency of skin tumors among young persons. Therefore, an early detection is required, starting with the general practitioner, dermatologist, oncologist, plastic surgeon and not least, the pathologist. We studied a sample consisting of 149 patients diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma at the level of the cephalic end and neck, all of them undergoing surgery--surgery individualized for each case. Some cellular and molecular modifications also resulted from infecting the cells with high carcinogenic risk HPV, considered by some scientists as responsible for the developing and progression of some neoplasias, including melanocytes and non-melanocytes skin tumors.

ABSTRACT

Vascularization of the transplanted bone tissue is a key factor for success and precedes the formation of bone tissue. Vascularized bone grafts have been widely used in bone transplantation for their efficiency. Maturation of the bone tissue at the place of the transplant involves the change in the vascular patterning, from plexiform irregular vascular networks, to regular, polygonal networks following the structure of osteons. Seven dogs were performed bone transplantation and intravenous injection with China ink in order to highlight the network of blood vessels during bone formation at the place of the transplant. The area occupied by blood vessels increased during osteogenesis, and their length decreased in evolution, suggesting a maturation of the vascular pattern.

ABSTRACT

UNLABELLED: OVARIAN DYSFUNCTIOBJECTIVE: The study assesses the frequency of metabolic changes in overweight patients with or without polycystic ovary syndrome. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group was made up by 148 patients of whom 99 patients without polycystic ovary syndrome (group A, control group) and 49 with polycystic ovary syndrome (group B), that came in our endocrine unit for a weight loss program, in the September 2008 March 2009 period. Morphometric parameters (height, weight, body mass index), biological parameters (cholesterol, triglycerides, blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin) and body composition analysis by measuring the electrical bioimpedance, were evaluated. RESULTS: Patients with polycystic ovary syndrome have a higher percentage of total fat (38.22+/-7.2) than patients without polycystic ovary syndrome (36.316+/-5.65) (p<0.05), for the same characteristics. Glycated hemoglobin, blood glucose and triglycerides were found higher in group B patients. Furthermore, the amount of free testosterone is higher in group B patients compared to those in group A. The prevalence of metabolic syndrome was higher in polycystic ovary syndrome cases (26.13%) comparative with overweight cases (16.16%, p<0.01). CONCLUSIONS: In the group of overweight patients, the group of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome is a particular group showing more severe metabolic changes.

ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION: Nuchal umbilical cord (NUC) is a possible complication of pregnancy which can be associated with adverse perinatal outcome. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was done at the County Emergency Hospital Timisoara, Romania, between January 2009 and December 2010 and included cases with NUC at the time of delivery. Outcome variable related to the mothers and newborns were studied. RESULTS: The incidence of NUC in the studied period was 8%. Most were primiparous. There were no significant statistical differences between vaginal births and cesarean section with one minute Apgar scores higher than 8. Five percent of the studied group presented intrauterine fetal death. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of NUC implies more attention but are not associated with increased rate of operative vaginal or cesarean delivery. One minute Apgar scores in these cases are comparable. NUC can be a cause of IUFD.
