ABSTRACT

Agro-industrial residue valorization under the umbrella of the circular bioeconomy (CBE) has prompted the search for further forward-thinking alternatives that encourage the mitigation of the industry's environmental footprint. From this perspective, second-life valorization (viz., thermoplastic composites) has been explored for agro-industrial waste (viz., oil palm empty fruit bunch fibers, OPEFBFs) that has already been used previously in other circular applications (viz., the removal of domestic wastewater contaminants). Particularly, this ongoing study evaluated the performance of raw residues (R-OPEFBFs) within three different size ranges (250-425, 425-600, 600-800 µm) both before and after their utilization in biofiltration processes (as post-adsorbents, P-OPEFBFs) to reinforce a polymer matrix of acrylic resin. The research examined the changes in R-OPEFBF composition and morphology caused by microorganisms in the biofilters and their impact on the mechanical properties of the composites. Smaller R-OPEFBFs (250-425 µm) demonstrated superior mechanical performance. Additionally, the composites with P-OPEFBFs displayed significant enhancements in their mechanical properties (3.9-40.3%) compared to those with R-OPEFBFs. The combination of the three fiber sizes improved the mechanical behavior of the composites, indicating the potential for both R-OPEFBFs and P-OPEFBFs as reinforcement materials in composite applications.

ABSTRACT

Peanut shells' adsorption performance in caffeine and triclosan removal was studied. Peanut shells were analyzed for their chemical composition, morphology, and surface functional groups. Batch adsorption and fixed-bed column experiments were carried out with solutions containing 30 mg/L of caffeine and triclosan. The parameters examined included peanut shell particle size (120-150, 300-600, and 800-2000 µm), adsorbent dose (0.02-60 g/L), contact time (up to 180 min), bed height (4-8 cm), and hydraulic loading rate (2.0 and 4.0 m3/m2-day). After determining the optimal adsorption conditions, kinetics, isotherm, and breakthrough curve models were applied to analyze the experimental data. Peanut shells showed an irregular surface and consisted mainly of polysaccharides (around 70% lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose), with a specific surface area of 1.7 m2/g and a pore volume of 0.005 cm3/g. The highest removal efficiencies for caffeine (85.6 ± 1.4%) and triclosan (89.3 ± 1.5%) were achieved using the smallest particles and 10.0 and 0.1 g/L doses over 180 and 45 min, respectively. Triclosan showed easier removal compared to caffeine due to its higher lipophilic character. The pseudo-second-order kinetics model provided the best fit with the experimental data, suggesting a chemisorption process between caffeine/triclosan and the adsorbent. Equilibrium data were well-described by the Sips model, with maximum adsorption capacities of 3.3 mg/g and 289.3 mg/g for caffeine and triclosan, respectively. In fixed-bed column adsorption tests, particle size significantly influenced efficiency and hydraulic behavior, with 120-150 µm particles exhibiting the highest adsorption capacity for caffeine (0.72 mg/g) and triclosan (143.44 mg/g), albeit with clogging issues. The experimental data also showed good agreement with the Bohart-Adams, Thomas, and Yoon-Nelson models. Therefore, the findings of this study highlight not only the effective capability of peanut shells to remove caffeine and triclosan but also their versatility as a promising option for water treatment and sanitation applications in different contexts.

ABSTRACT

The Second International Meeting on Endemic Mycoses of the Americas (IMEMA) and the First International Symposium on Implantation Mycoses (ISIM) took place in Santiago del Estero, Argentina during September 25-27th, 2023. The conference provided a platform for researchers, clinicians, and experts to discuss the latest developments in the field of endemic and implantation mycoses. Topics included epidemiology, diagnostic advances, treatment strategies, and the impact of environmental factors in the spread of these fungal diseases. IMEMA and ISIM contributed to the regional discourse on the mycoses, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in addressing these public health challenges.


IMEMA/ISIM, held in Santiago del Estero, Argentina, convened experts to discuss endemic and implantation mycoses, covering topics such as epidemiology, diagnostics, treatment, and advocacy. The event highlighted ongoing efforts in combating these diseases.

ABSTRACT

Coccidiomycosis is a potentially life-threatening fungal infection endemic to certain regions of Argentina. The infection is caused by Coccidioides spp. and is primarily diagnosed by Coccidioides antibody (Ab) detection. Access to rapid, highly accurate diagnostic testing is critical to ensure prompt antifungal therapy. The sona Coccidioides Ab Lateral Flow Assay (LFA) performs faster and requires less laboratory infrastructure and equipment compared with other Ab detection assays, potentially providing a substantial improvement for rapid case screening in coccidioidomycosis-endemic regions; however, validation of this test is needed. Thus, we aimed to evaluate the analytical performance of the sona Coccidioides Ab (LFA) and compare agreement with anti-Coccidioides Ab detection assays. A total of 103 human sera specimens were tested, including 25 specimens from patients with coccidioidomycosis and 78 from patients without coccidioidomycosis. The sona Coccidioides Ab Lateral Flow Assay (LFA) was performed with a sensitivity of 88%, and specificity and accuracy of 87%. Furthermore, the Coccidioides Ab LFA had good agreement with other anti-Coccidioides Ab detection assays. Our findings suggest the sona Coccidioides Ab LFA has satisfactory performance and may be useful for diagnosing coccidioidomycosis in endemic regions.

ABSTRACT

Resveratrol and caffeic acid are some of the most consumed antioxidants during the day, so their importance as sources and their benefits need to be evaluated and updated. This survey aimed not only to analyze whether young Romanian consumers are informed about the benefits of antioxidants in general, and resveratrol and caffeic acid in particular, but also to observe the degree of nutritional education of these participants. Young consumers know the concept of antioxidants relatively well; they managed to give examples of antioxidants and indicate their effects. The majority of those chosen drink wine and coffee, but many are unaware of their health advantages and antioxidant properties. Students are less familiar with the antioxidant chemicals resveratrol and caffeic acid. It is advised to have a thorough understanding of these significant antioxidants and their nutritional content as they are present in our regular diets, and further studies on different kinds of antioxidants are required to increase the awareness of people concerning their importance in daily life.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Anal cancer risk is elevated in MSM with HIV (MSMWH). Anal high-risk human papillomavirus (hr-HPV) infection is necessary but insufficient to develop high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL), the anal cancer precursor, suggesting additional factors. We sought to determine whether the microbiome of the anal canal is distinct by comparing it with the microbiome of stool. We also sought to determine whether changes in the anal microbiome are associated with HSIL among MSMWH. DESIGN: Cross-sectional comparison of the microbiome of the anal canal with the microbiome of stool in MSMWH and cross-sectional comparison of the anal microbiome of MSMWH with anal HSIL with the anal microbiome of MSMWH without anal HSIL. METHODS: Sterile swabs were used to sample the anus of MSMWH for microbiome and HPV testing, followed by high-resolution anoscopy. Stool samples were mailed from home. 16S sequencing was used for bacterial identification. Measures of alpha diversity, beta diversity, and differential abundance analysis were used to compare samples. RESULTS: One hundred sixty-six anal samples and 103 matching stool samples were sequenced. Beta diversity showed clustering of stool and anal samples. Of hr-HPV-positive MSMWH, 31 had HSIL and 13 had no SIL. Comparison of the microbiome between these revealed 28 different species. The highest-fold enrichment among MSMWH/hr-HPV/HSIL included pro-inflammatory and carcinogenic Prevotella, Parasuterella, Hungatella, Sneathia, and Fusobacterium species. The anti-inflammatory Anaerostipes caccae showed the greatest reduction among MSMWH/hr-HPV/HSIL. CONCLUSION: The anal microbiome is distinct from stool. A pro-inflammatory and carcinogenic environment may be associated with anal HSIL.

ABSTRACT

Biomaterials are an important and integrated part of modern medicine, and their development and improvement are essential. The fundamental requirement of a biomaterial is found to be in its interaction with the surrounding environment, with which it must coexist. The aim of this study was to assess the biological characteristics of hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based coatings doped with Mg and Zn ions obtained by the pulsed galvanostatic electrochemical method on the surface of pure titanium (cp-Ti) functionalized with titanium dioxide nanotubes (NTs TiO2) obtained by anodic oxidation. The obtained results highlighted that the addition of Zn or Mg into the HAp structure enhances the in vitro response of the cp-Ti surface functionalized with NT TiO2. The contact angle and surface free energy showed that all the developed surfaces have a hydrophilic character in comparison with the cp-Ti surface. The HAp-based coatings doped with Zn registered superior values than the ones with Mg, in terms of biomineralization, electrochemical behavior, and cell interaction. Overall, it can be said that the addition of Mg or Zn can enhance the in vitro behavior of the HAp-based coatings in accordance with clinical requirements. Antibacterial tests showed that the proposed HAp-Mg coatings had no efficiency against Escherichia coli, while the HAp-Zn coatings registered the highest antibacterial efficiency.

BACKGROUND: Liver uptake in [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 PET is used as an internal reference in addition to clinical parameters to select patients for [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 radioligand therapy (RLT). Due to increased demand, [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 was replaced by [18F]F-PSMA-1007, a more lipophilic tracer with different biodistribution and splenic uptake was suggested as a new internal reference. We compared the intra-patient tracer distribution between [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 and [18F]F-PSMA-1007. METHODS: Fifty patients who underwent PET examinations in two centers with both [18F]F-PSMA-1007 and [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 within one year were included. Mean standardized uptake values (SUVmean) were obtained for liver, spleen, salivary glands, blood pool, and bone. Primary tumor, local recurrence, lymph node, bone or visceral metastasis were also assessed for intra- and inter-individual comparison. RESULTS: Liver SUVmean was significantly higher with [18F]F-PSMA-1007 (11.7 ± 3.9) compared to [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 (5.4 ± 1.7, p < .05) as well as splenic SUVmean (11.2 ± 3.5 vs.8.1 ± 3.5, p < .05). The blood pool was comparable between the two scans. Malignant lesions did not show higher SUVmean on [18F]F-PSMA-1007. Intra-individual comparison of liver uptake between the two scans showed a linear association for liver uptake with SUVmean [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 = 0.33 x SUVmean [18F]F-PSMA-1007 + 1.52 (r = .78, p < .001). CONCLUSION: Comparing biodistribution of [68Ga]Ga and [18F]F tracers, liver uptake on [68Ga]Ga-PSMA-11 PET is the most robust internal reference value. Liver uptake of [18F]F-PSMA-1007 was significantly higher, but so was the splenic uptake. The strong intra-individual association of hepatic accumulation between the two scans may allow using of a conversion factor for [18F]F-PSMA-1007 as a basis for RLT selection.

AIM: This study presents a comparative analysis of cryostripping to conventional saphenectomy. Materials and Methods: The study included 2191 patients admitted in the Phlebology Department, 1st Surgical Department, Emergency County Hospital Timisoara, between September 2013 and April 2023, between September 2013 and April 2023, who underwent saphenectomy by cryostripping (1327 patients) or conventionally (864 patients). We compared the duration and costs of the procedure, hospitalization period, post-operative results, method feasibility, as well as the technical advantages of cryostripping compared to conventional surgery. Results: A smaller proximal incision, compared to the classic operation, as well the fact that distal counter incision is not necessary, represents technical advantages of this procedure. Average duration of the intervention was 41 +- 12.8 minutes, consumables costs were about 52 +- 10 EUR/intervention, with an average hospitalization period was 1.05 +- 0.41 days. The post-operative results were favourable, early complications rate being reduced (ecchymoses Phi; 2 cm - 33.23%; hematoma - 2.11%; deep vein thrombosis - 0.15%; transient paresthesias 3.01%). Compared to classic saphenectomy, the costs of consumables/intervention are similar, intervention time, hospitalization period and complication rate being statistically significantly lower. An advantage of the method is the fact that the cryo-probes can be sterilized, being reusable; from the economic point of view, the technique perfectly fits in both public hospitals and private clinics. Conclusions: Cryostripping is a radical surgical procedure which bring a significant number of advantages compared to the classic saphenectomy, being an effective alternative in CVD treatment.

ABSTRACT

Exercise interventions are nowadays considered as effective add-on treatments in people with schizophrenia but are usually associated with high dropout rates. Therefore, the present study investigated potential predictors of adherence from a large multicenter study, encompassing two types of exercise training, conducted over a 6-month period with individuals with schizophrenia. First, we examined the role of multiple participants' characteristics, including levels of functioning, symptom severity, cognitive performance, quality of life, and physical fitness. Second, we used K-means clustering to identify clinical subgroups of participants that potentially exhibited superior adherence. Last, we explored if adherence could be predicted on the individual level using Random Forest, Logistic Regression, and Ridge Regression. We found that individuals with higher levels of functioning at baseline were more likely to adhere to the exercise interventions, while other factors such as symptom severity, cognitive performance, quality of life or physical fitness seemed to be less influential. Accordingly, the high-functioning group with low symptoms exhibited a greater likelihood of adhering to the interventions compared to the severely ill group. Despite incorporating various algorithms, it was not possible to predict adherence at the individual level. These findings add to the understanding of the factors that influence adherence to exercise interventions. They underscore the predictive importance of daily life functioning while indicating a lack of association between symptom severity and adherence. ABSTRACT

The commencement of a new editorial tenure within the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology: Attitudes and Social Cognition (JPSP: ASC) provides an opportunity for reflection regarding the journal's core mission. The editors recognize that social psychology is at a crossroads due to competing demands that may have led to reduced submissions and posed challenges for previous editors in filling the journal's pages. Now, JPSP: ASC has been allotted more pages to allow for growth during this editorial term. Although this is desirable for the field, it adds to the pressure of identifying articles for publication given the difficulties filling the pages during previous editorial terms. As the premier outlet of social psychology since 1965, JPSP: ASC will retain its centrality if we increase submissions and publish more articles, while continuing to strive to communicate methodologically trustworthy, intellectually stimulating, and socially relevant research, in a responsible fashion. This longitudinal study aimed to analyze the influence of physical activity (PA) on the relationship between body adiposity and cardiac autonomic modulation (CAM) in women survivors of breast cancer. We collected body adiposity through electrical bioimpedance considering body fat percentage (BFP), CAM through heart rate variability (considering RMSSD, SDNN, PNN50, LF (m2), HF (m2), SD1 indexes and SD1/SD2 ratio) and PA through a questionnaire in 64 participants (58.0 ± 9.6 years), recruited through the local association of support for breast cancer and by direct indications from city mastologists. After insertion of PA into the multivariate statistical model, significant attenuation was observed in the relationship between body adiposity and CAM for the indices: SDNN (ß = -0.94; 95 percent CI: -1.93; 0.04; p = .060) and SD1/SD2 (ß = -0.01;95 percent CI = -0.02; 0.001; p = .065). In conclusion, it was observed that PA was able to mitigate the relationships between BFP and CAM (considering SDNN index and SD1/SD2 ratio) in breast cancer survivors.

ABSTRACT

Acute myeloid leukemia is a poor-prognosis cancer commonly stratified by genetic aberrations, but these mutations are often heterogeneous and fail to consistently predict therapeutic response. Here, we combine transcriptomic, proteomic, and phosphoproteomic datasets with ex vivo drug sensitivity data to help understand the underlying pathophysiology of AML beyond mutations. We measure the proteome and phosphoproteome of 210 patients and combine them with genomic and transcriptomic measurements to identify four proteogenomic subtypes that complement existing genetic subtypes. We build a predictor to classify samples into subtypes and map them to a "landscape" that identifies specific drug response patterns. We then build a drug response prediction model to identify drugs that target distinct subtypes and validate our findings on cell lines representing various stages of quizartinib resistance. Our results show how multiomics data together with drug sensitivity data can inform therapy stratification and drug combinations in AML.

ABSTRACT

Citrus greening disease, or Huanglongbing (HLB), has devastated citrus crops globally in recent years. The causal bacterium, 'Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus', presents a sampling issue for qPCR diagnostics and results in a high false negative rate. In this work, we compared six metabolomics assays to identify HLB-infected citrus trees from leaf tissue extracted from 30 control and 30 HLB-infected trees. A liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-based assay was most accurate. A final partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) model was trained and validated on 690 leaf samples with corresponding qPCR measures from three citrus varieties (Rio Red grapefruit, Hamlin sweet orange, and Valencia sweet orange) from orchards in Florida and Texas. Trees were naturally infected with HLB transmitted by the insect vector Diaphorina citri. In a randomized validation set, the assay was 99.9% accurate to classify diseased from nondiseased samples. This model was applied to samples from trees receiving plant defense-inducer compounds or biological treatments to prevent or cure HLB infection. From two trials, HLB-related metabolite abundances and PLS-DA scores were tracked longitudinally and compared with those of control trees. We demonstrate how our assay can assess tree health and the efficacy of HLB treatments and conclude that no trialed treatment was efficacious.

ABSTRACT

Research in cultural psychology over the last three decades has revealed the profound influence of culture on cognitive, emotional, and motivational processes shaping individuals into active agents. This article aims to show cultural psychology's promise in three key steps. First, we review four notable cultural dimensions believed to underlie cultural variations: independent versus interdependent self, individualism versus collectivism, tightness versus looseness of social norms, and relational mobility. Second, we examine how ecology and geography shape human activities and give rise to organized systems of cultural practices and meanings, called eco-cultural complexes. In turn, the eco-cultural complex of each zone is instrumental in shaping a wide range of psychological processes, revealing a psychological diversity that extends beyond the scope of the current East-West literature. Finally, we examine some of the non-Western cultural zones present today, including Arab, East Asian, Latin American, and South Asian zones, and discuss how they may have contributed, to varying degrees, to the formation of the contemporary Western cultural zone.

ABSTRACT

Proteogenomics refers to the integration of comprehensive genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic measurements from the same samples with the goal of fully understanding the regulatory processes converting genotypes to phenotypes, often with an emphasis on gaining a deeper understanding of disease processes. Although specific genetic mutations have long been known to drive the development of multiple cancers, gene mutations alone do not always predict prognosis or response to targeted therapy. The benefit of proteogenomics research is that information obtained from proteins and their corresponding pathways provides insight into therapeutic targets that can complement genomic information by providing an additional dimension regarding the underlying mechanisms and pathophysiology of tumors. This review describes the novel insights into tumor biology and drug resistance derived from proteogenomic analysis while highlighting the clinical potential of proteogenomic observations and advances in technique and analysis tools.

ABSTRACT

Evidence suggests that Latin Americans display elevated levels of emotional expressivity and positivity. Here, we tested whether Latin Americans possess a unique form of interdependence called expressive interdependence, characterized by the open expression of positive emotions related to social engagement (e.g., feelings of closeness to others). In Study 1, we compared Latin Americans from Chile and Mexico with European Americans in the United States, a group known to be highly independent. Latin Americans expressed positive socially engaging emotions, particularly in response to negative events affecting others, whereas European Americans favored positive socially disengaging emotions, such as pride, especially in response to personally favorable circumstances. Study 2 replicated these findings with another group of Latin Americans from Colombia and European Americans in the United States. Study 2 also included Japanese in Japan, who expressed positive emotions less than Latin and European Americans. However, Japanese displayed a higher tendency to express negative socially engaging emotions, such as guilt and shame, compared to both groups. Our data demonstrate that emotional expression patterns align with overarching ethos of interdependence in Latin America and Japan and independence among European Americans. However, Latin Americans and Japanese exhibited different styles of interdependence. Latin Americans were expressive of positive socially engaging emotions, whereas Japanese were less expressive overall. Moreover, when Japanese expressed emotions, they emphasized negative socially engaging emotions. Implications for theories of culture and emotion are discussed. ABSTRACT

The approximations to the embedding potential in frozen-density embedding theory (FDET) have been assessed for the first time for the calculation of the electric field gradient (EFG) at a nucleus. FDET-based methods using a hierarchy of approximations are applied to evaluate the EFG at the nuclei of an HCl molecule in several noncovalently bound clusters chosen to represent potential liquid or molecular crystal systems. A detailed assessment of such approximations is made for the Hartree-Fock treatment of electron-electron correlation (both in FDET and in the reference calculations for the whole cluster). The emerging choice of the optimal set of approximations is reconfirmed in calculations in which electron-electron calculations are treated at the MP2 level. Our optimized protocol produces average errors in the complexation-induced EFG shift on the order of 25% relative to conventional quantum mechanical calculations for the whole cluster. This protocol is shown to be numerically robust and leads to enormous computational savings compared to a complete quantum mechanical treatment of the embedded species and its environment. For a cluster comprising a Na+ cation and up to 24 water molecules, the computation time is reduced by a factor of 30,000 at the expense of introducing an error in the environment-induced EFG shift of 22%.
