ABSTRACT
Percutaneous balloon angioplasty and endovascular stent placement are becoming common techniques intended to reduce the need for surgical bypass procedures that may be more expensive or have higher morbidity rates. Prophylactic antibiotics are not currently used before stent placement in most centers even when implanted via the femoral route. Infectious complications have been rare. In the case presented here an infected common iliac pseudoaneurysm occurred after percutaneous balloon angioplasty and stent placement. The literature is reviewed.

A primary histiocytic lymphoma arising in the esophagus and its resultant spontaneous perforation is reported in a 69-year-old female. To our knowledge esophageal perforation occurring as a complication of a primary non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the esophagus has not been previously reported.

The frequency and severity of phlebitis associated with cephalothin and cephapirin was compared in a double-blind study in 82 surgical patients with 149 different infusion sites. After treatment with the coded drug products, the status of each patient's veins was evaluated daily by i.v. therapists. Cephapirin was associated with a slightly lower rate of phlebitis, but the difference was not significant. For both drugs, the duration of therapy did not appear to have an effect on the rate of phlebitis. Scalp vein needles were associated with a lower rate of phlebitis than plastic catheters, but the difference was not significant.
