ABSTRACT

Novel cycloruthenated complexes 2 a-c, 4 a-c, and 6 a, b based on heteroaromatic cores have been synthesized by reaction of a series of heterocycle-based imines with [{RuCl(η(6)-p-cymene)}(2)(µ-Cl)(2)] and Cu(OAc)(2). This approach has proved efficient for the cyclometalation of thiophene, benzothiophene, furan, benzofuran, pyrrole, and indole derivatives. In addition, even a double cyclometalation process over the same heterocyclic ring is possible, yielding unprecedented bimetallic complexes. These ruthenacycles react with 3-hexyne through an unexpected pathway, which involves the coupling of the original imino heterocycle and acetylene followed by dearomatization to afford fused hetero-hydropyridyl ligands bonded to the {Ru(p-cymene)} organometallic moiety (i.e., 7 a-c and 8 a-c). These complexes represent, as far as we know, the first examples of this type of compound within the context of cyclometalation, and an exhaustive analysis of their structure was carried out in solution and solid state. Furthermore, these unique species react with CuCl(2), which promotes the rearomatization and the release of highly valuable aromatic fused bis-heterocycles (i.e., 9 a-c, 10 a-c, 11 a, and 12 a/12 a'), providing a novel and appealing synthetic route to this extraordinary family of molecules.

ABSTRACT

ortho-palladated complexes based on thiophene and benzothiophene ligands 1a and 1b have been synthesized by direct C-H activation under mild conditions. These species were fully characterized, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The reactions of these novel complexes with internal alkynes afforded a variety of thieno[3,2-c]pyridinium salts substituted at the 6- and 7-positions. The thiophene-based complex 2a also reacts with carbon monoxide, in the presence of different alcohols, forming the corresponding esters by tandem alkoxycarbonylations. This latter reaction can be exploited for the unexpected, but straightforward, formation of the monomeric bis-cyclometallated complexes 6a and 6b from 2a or 2b, whose syntheses do not require the employment of transmetallating agents. The structures of these monomeric palladacycles were also fully elucidated by means of X-ray diffraction studies.

ABSTRACT

The reactions between a series of thiophene-based imines with [(η(6)-C(6)H(6))RuCl(µ-Cl)](2), in a basic medium, and in MeCN give a family of ruthenacycles of stoichiometry [Ru(C^N)(NCMe)(4)]PF(6) (C^N = orthometalated thiopheneimine). In these species, the C-H activation process is produced in most cases at the thiophene ring. When two C-H bonds are competing (thiophene vs aryl), the cyclometalation can be driven regioselectively to the thiophene unit or to the aryl ring as a function of the location of the iminic C=N bond. Cyclometalation can also be oriented to positions 2 or 3 of the thiophene depending on the situation of the imine in the heterocycle (3 or 2, respectively). In all studied cases, the η(6)-C(6)H(6) ligand was substituted by acetonitrile. The X-ray structures of two representative complexes have been determined. These thiophene-based metallacycles react with iodine under very mild conditions affording, after hydrolysis, substituted 3-iodo-2-formyl(benzo)thiophenes or substituted 2-iodo-3-formyl(benzo)thiophenes, as a function of the organometallic precursor.

ABSTRACT

Ortho lithiation of N-benzamido-P,P,P-triaryliminophosphoranes through deprotonation with alkyllithium bases was achieved with ortho-C═O and ortho-P═N chemoselectivity. However, the synthetic scope of these processes was rather limited. Ortho-lithiated N-benzamido-P,P,P-triphenyliminophosphorane 8 was efficiently prepared via lithium/halogen exchange of the corresponding ortho-brominated precursor with s-BuLi in THF at -90 °C. The reaction of 8 with a variety of electrophiles provides an easy and mild method for the regioselective synthesis of ortho-modified iminophosphoranes via C-C (alkylation and hydroxyalkylation) and C-X (X = I, Si, P, Sn, and Hg) bond-forming reactions. NMR characterization of 8 in THF solution showed that 8 exists as an equilibrium mixture of one monomer and two dimers. The Li atoms of these species become members of five-membered rings through chelation by the ortho-metalated carbon and the carbonyl oxygen. The dimers differ in the relative orientation of the two chelates with respect to the plane defined by the C(2)Li(2) core. The equilibrium between all species is established by splitting the dimers into monomers and subsequent recombination with formation of a different dimer.

ABSTRACT

Unprecedented porphycene complexes, containing a [RuCp*] (Cp*: pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) fragment accommodated in the central N(4) core or directly bonded to the "pi-face" of the macrocycle have been prepared and fully characterized, including via single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The optical and electrochemical properties of these new families of compounds were examined in detail, revealing fluorescence in the case of the "sitting-atop" complexes for which the lifetime was determined. For both metal (M = Cu, Ni) porphycene derivatives with a "fused" ruthenocene moiety, strong electronic communication was observed through efficient photoinduced electron transfer from the ruthenocene unit to the macrocycle after laser flash photolysis, affording a charge-separated state. This ruthenocene-macrocycle communication was also confirmed by observation of strong spin-spin coupling in the EPR spectra of the one-electron oxidized species; this allowed for calculation of the distance between the two metal centers.

ABSTRACT

The coordination chemistry of porphyrins and related tetrapyrrolic ligands has traditionally centered around the ability of these systems to form pyrrole N-ligated complexes via the formation of sigma bonds, either within the N(4) core or displaced above it. In fact, such sigma-complexes are known with almost every metal cation in the periodic table. However, a growing number of pi-complexes derived from tetrapyrrolic ligands have been reported in recent years. The underlying coordination mode, while still novel in the context of "porphyrin-like" chemistry, is already being recognized for the effects it can impart over the reactivity, as well as the spectroscopic, redox, electronic, and optical properties of various oligopyrrolic macrocycles. This critical review summarizes accomplishments made in this fast-emerging field (59 references).

ABSTRACT

The synthesis of binuclear organometallic ruthenium complexes of an expanded porphyrin-type macrocycle is reported; pyrrolic hydrogen bonding donors were found to interact with ancillary ligands in the primary coordination sphere and to stabilize coordinated dioxygen in an eta(2)-fashion.

DNA damage by MoCH3(eta3-allyl)(CO)2(phen) complexes has been shown to occur by two mechanisms: by backbone cleavage via the abstraction of H1' and/or H5' from the deoxyribose moiety and by base modification, resulting in G-specific cleavage via the formation of base-labile residues methylguanine, methoxyguanine, and 8-oxo-G.

ABSTRACT

Reactions of the Schiff base oligopyrrolic octaazamacrocycle 1 with BF4- salts of divalent zinc and cadmium result in fluoride anion abstraction and the formation of difluoride-bridged metal complexes. X-ray diffraction analyses provide support for the notion that hydrogen-bonding interactions, involving the N-H groups of the macrocycle and the coordinated fluoride ions, play an important role in stabilizing these new complexes.

Complexes [Re(ONCMe2)(CO)3(bipy)] (1) and [Re(ONCMe2)(CO)3(phen)] (2), synthesized by reaction of the respective triflato precursors [Re(OTf)(CO)3(N-N)] (N-N = bipy, phen) with KONCMe2, feature O-bonded monodentate oximato ligands. Compound [Re(CO)3(phen)(HONCMe2)]BAr'4 (3), with a monodentate N-bonded oxime ligand, was prepared by reaction of [Re(OTf)(CO)3(phen)], HONCMe2, and NaBAr'4. Deprotonation of 3 afforded 2. The oximato complexes reacted with p-tolylisocyanate, p-tolylisothiocyanate, maleic anhydride, and tetracyanoethylene, affording the products of the insertion of the electrophile into the Re-O bond, compounds 4-7. One representative of each type of compound was fully characterized, including single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The reactions of 1 and 2 with dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate were found to involve first an insertion as the ones mentioned above but followed by incorporation of water, loss of acetone, and formation of the charge-separated neutral amido complexes 9 and 10. The structure of 9 and 10 was determined by X-ray diffraction, and key features of their electronic distribution were studied using a topological analysis of the electron density as obtained from the Fourier map.

UV-vis absorption and picosecond time-resolved IR (TRIR) spectra of amido and phosphido complexes fac-[Re(ER2)(CO)3(bpy)] (ER2 = NHPh, NTol2, PPh2, bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine, Tol = 4-methylphenyl) were investigated in conjunction with DFT and TD-DFT calculations in order to understand their ground-state electronic structure, low-lying electronic transitions and excited-state character and dynamics. The HOMO is localized at the amido/phosphido ligand. Amide and phosphide ligands are sigma-bonded to Re, the pi interaction being negligible. Absorption spectra show a weak band at low energies (1.7-2.1 eV) that arises from essentially pure ER(2) --> bpy ligand-to-ligand charge transfer (LLCT). The lowest excited state is the corresponding triplet, (3)LLCT. Low triplet energies and large distortions diminish the excited-state lifetimes to 85 and 270 ps for NHPh and NTol(2), respectively, and to ca. 30 ps for PPh2. nu(CO) vibrations undergo only very small ( bpy MLCT character, is a unique feature of the amido/phoshido complexes, whose lowest excited state can be viewed as containing a highly unusual aminyl/phosphinyl radical-cationic ligand. For comparison, the amino and phosphino complexes fac-[Re(NHPh(2))(CO)3(bpy)]+ and fac-[Re(PPh3)(CO)3(bpy)]+ are shown to have the usual Re --> bpy (3)MLCT lowest excited states, characterized by upshifted nu(CO) bands.

ABSTRACT

The reaction of the complex [Mo(OTf)(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)] (1) (OTf = trifluoromethylsulfonate; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) with tetrabutylammonium fluoride trihydrate afforded the fluoride complex [MoF(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)] (2). The IR spectrum and the oxidation potential of 2 reflect the fact that its metal center is more electron-rich than that of the chloro analogue [MoCl(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)]. Compound 2 reacted with 1 affording the homobinuclear complex [[Mo(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)](2)(mu-F)][OTf] (3), with a fluoride bridge. Compound 2 also reacts with the species generated in situ by triflate abstraction from [M(OTf)(CO)(3)('N-N')] (M = Mn, Re; 'N-N' = 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy), phen) using NaBAr'(4) (Ar' = 3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl), affording the heterobinuclear complexes [[Mo(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)](mu-F)[M(CO)(3)('N--N')]][BAr'(4)] (M = Mn, 'N-N' = bipy (4); M = Re, 'N-N' = phen (5)). All new compounds have been characterized by spectroscopic methods (IR and NMR) and, in the case of 1, 2, 3, and 4, also by means of X-ray diffraction analysis.

ABSTRACT

The hydroxo compounds [Re(OH)(CO)(3)(N-N)] (N-N=bipy, 2 a; Me(2)-bipy, 2 b) were prepared in a biphasic H(2)O/CH(2)Cl(2) medium by reaction of [Re(OTf)(CO)(3)(N-N)] with KOH. In contrast, when anhydrous CH(2)Cl(2) was used, the binuclear hydroxo-bridged compound [[Re(CO)(3)(bipy)](2)(mu-OH)]OTf (3-OTf) was obtained. Compound [Re(OH)(CO)(3)(Me(2)-bipy)] (2 b) reacted with phenyl acetate or vinyl acetate to afford [Re(OAc)(CO)(3)(Me(2)-bipy)] (4) and phenol or acetaldehyde, respectively. The reactions of [Mo(OH)(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)] (1), 2 a, and 2 b toward several unsaturated organic electrophiles were studied. The reaction of 1 with (p-tolyl)isocyanate afforded an adduct of N,N'-di(p-tolyl)urea and the carbonato-bridged compound [[Mo(eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)](2)(mu-eta(1)(O),eta(1)(O)-CO(3))] (5). In contrast, the reaction of 2 a with phenylisocyanate afforded [Re(OC(O)NHPh)(CO)(3)(bipy)] (6); this results from formal PhNCO insertion into the O-H bond. On the other hand, compounds [Mo[SC(O)NH(p-tolyl)](eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(2)(phen)] (7), [Re[SC(O)NH(p-tolyl)](CO)(3)(Me(2)-bipy)] (8 a), and [Re[SC(O)NHEt](CO)(3)(Me(2)-bipy)] (8 b) were obtained by reaction of 1 or 2 b with the corresponding alkyl or aryl isothiocyanates. In those cases, RNCS was inserted into the M-O bond. The reactions of 1, 2 a, and 2 b with dimethylacetylenedicarboxylate (DMAD) gave the complexes [Mo[C(OH)-C(CO(2)Me)C(CO(2)Me)-O](eta(3)-C(3)H(4)-Me-2)(CO)(phen)] (9) and [Re[C(OH)C(CO(2)Me)C(CO(2)Me)O](CO)(2)(N-N)] (N-N=bipy, 10 a; Me(2)-bipy, 10 b). The molecules of these compounds contain five-membered metallacycles that are the result of coupling between the hydroxo ligand, DMAD, and one of the CO ligands. The new compounds were characterized by a combination of IR and NMR spectroscopy, and for [[Re(CO)(3)(bipy)(2)(mu-OH)]BF(4) (3-BF(4)), 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 b, 9, and 10 b, also by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
