ABSTRACT

Antimicrobial resistance is a significant threat to public health, with Italy experiencing substantial challenges in terms of AMR rate, surveillance system and activities to combat AMR. In response, the MICRO-BIO project was initiated as part of the National Plan to Combat Antibiotic Resistance by Region Lombardy health department. It was launched in 2018 with the aim of creating a surveillance tool by integrating data on bacterial isolates from microbiology laboratories. The participating laboratories were directly involved in reviewing and addressing discrepancies in the transmission data quality assessment. Despite the disruptions caused by COVID-19, 30 out of 33 laboratories in the Lombardy Region were successfully integrated by October 2023, with 1,201,000 microbiological data collected in the first nine months of 2023. In 2022 the analysis yielded 15,037 blood culture results from 20 labs passing validation. Data regarding the antimicrobial resistance profile of high-priority pathogens was analyzed at regional and single-hospital levels. The MICRO-BIO project represents a significant step toward strengthening AMR surveillance in a highly populated region. As a multi-disciplinary tool encompassing the fields of public health and IT (information technology), this tool has the potential to inform regional and local AMR epidemiology.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Enhancing public health communication during a global crisis is crucial to promote resilience. This study examines the influence of health communication in ten countries, analysing its positive and negative impact on society's behavior regarding the origin, symptoms, and prevention of SARS-CoV-2. METHODS: A comprehensive narrative analysis of available data was conducted to evaluate societal and resilience responses during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study consulted academic and grey literature, from February 1, 2020, to March 1, 2022, focusing on ten countries that exhibited heterogenous responses to pandemic, including EU (Italy, Denmark, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, Romania, France, and Germany) and non-EU (United Kingdom and Israel) countries. RESULTS: The stringency of policy responses varied between countries and over time, with some countries implementing strict lockdowns while others only issued recommendations. Vaccination campaign and the spread of less virulent variants of the virus has led most countries to lift most restrictions by April 2022. However, vaccine uptake and refusal remain complex issues influenced by social norms, cultural beliefs, access to information, and trust in government authorities. Social media played a significant role during the pandemic, but healthcare professionals' active participation in addressing misinformation was lacking. CONCLUSIONS: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of Public Health in developing proper strategies and utilizing digitals tools to counteract infodemic and spread relevant information. Healthcare workers should improve their communication skills to face future epidemics and be trusted by the population. Social media and digital platforms should be studied and used effectively in times of emergency.

ABSTRACT

Among the objectives of the WHO Global Vaccination Action Plan 2020-2025, there is the establishment, in all countries, of a National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (NITAG), an independent body with the aim of supporting and harmonising vaccination policies. Italy firstly established a NITAG in 2017; it contributed to the nation's immunization policies but fell short of its goal of becoming a true reference group. The newly appointed NITAG, made up of 28 independent experts, has the ambitious goal to promote the new National Immunization Prevention Plan (PNPV), to harmonise the current vaccination schedule with the anti-COVID-19 campaign, and to recover the vaccination coverage decline that occurred during the pandemic. The contact with the ECDC EU/EEA, the WHO Global NITAG networks, and all the national stakeholders needs to be reinforced in order to accomplish these aims. This paper describes the structure, organisation, and strategy of the new Italian NITAG.
