ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and associated variables among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in a specialized treatment center in a city located in southern Brazil. A cross-sectional study was conducted using the Beck Depression Inventory to assess the presence of depressive symptoms. The prevalence of depressive symptoms was 53.5% among the surveyed population, which supports the idea that depressive symptoms are more common among PLWHA, mainly if compared with the general population. It was observed that 57.7% of the study participants were with depressive symptoms and did not take any psychiatric medication and 100% did not undergo psychotherapy, which indicates undertreatment. There was no statistically significant difference in the mean CD4 count between patients with depressive symptoms (484.1  ±  353) and patients without depressive symptoms (528.4  ±  263). Further actions should be taken to improve the care for PLWHA. The interface between psychology, psychiatry, and internal medicine is of utmost importance to provide a more humanized care, in which the psychosocial, psychological, and psychiatric aspects are not neglected.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Disturbances in eating behavior significantly affect young adults. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of abnormal eating behaviors, according to the Eating Attitudes Test - 26 (EAT-26) in medical students at a university in southern Santa Catarina State, Brazil. METHODS: Self-reported questionnaire, based on the EAT-26 scale, was administered to medical students. Additional questions about age, gender, study period of the course, weight and height were asked. A total of 391 medical students were assessed, amounting to 93.3 percent of the 419 students enrolled. RESULTS: Ten percent of the surveyed subjects had positive EAT-26 scores. This outcome measure was positive associated with females (PR 6.5), body mass index (BMI) ≤ 25 kg/m² (PR 4.5), age ≤ 20 years (PR 1.3) and being student from 1st to 5th semester of the course (PR 1.7). A higher proportion of women gave positive responses to behaviors related to control of food intake or weight loss than men. CONCLUSION: The significant prevalence of behaviors related to eating disorders, predominantly among women, suggests the implementation of preventive measures targeting this population.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Depression, according to estimates by the World Health Organization (WHO), affects 4% of world population. Morbidity and mortality associated with depression can be prevented with proper treatment in most cases. In hospitalized patients, the prevalence of depressive syndrome is around 15% to 56%. The aim of this study was identify the prevalence and severity of depressive symptoms diagnosed by the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale and evaluates the use of psychotropic drugs in adult patients of both sexes admitted to clinical sector in a general hospital. METHOD: We conducted a cross-sectional study, using interview based on the Hamilton Depression Scale, and assessment of medical records in one month period. The data were processed and analyzed using Epi-info 6.0. The measured intensity ratio used was the prevalence ratio. The confidence interval for statistical inference was 95%. RESULTS: This study assessed 201 patients consecutively, 87 men (43.3%) and 114 women (56.7%) aged 18 to moderate depression was 5% and 1% was severe. Males had a prevalence of depression of 47.1%, while among females, the prevalence was 57.9%. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of depressive symptoms in a clinical sector of a general hospital was 53.3%. It was found that 43.6% of the patients studied with depression symptoms had no psychotropic prescription.
