ABSTRACT

A test survey based on a questionnaire was carried out among Danish eye practitioners. The response rate was 72%. The purpose was to estimate the minimum number of patients suffering from glaucoma (prevalence). Survey results show a prevalence of 0.65%. Further, the survey shows a clear correlation between glaucoma diagnosis and age. The number of glaucoma patients increase from approximately 0.5% for persons 50 years of age to approximately 5% for persons 80 years of age. Seventy-two percent of the diagnosed glaucoma patients have visual field defects at different stages. Six percent have central islands on both eyes, the equivalent of a prevalence for social blindness of 0.04%. Ninety-three percent of the diagnosed glaucoma patients receive anti-glaucomatous treatment, of these 42% combination therapy. Eighty percent of glaucoma patients in combination therapy received three or more drugs.

ABSTRACT

Evaluation of the results of HLA typing of 187 patients grouped into herpetic keratitis (37), non-herpetic keratitis (43), keratoconus (42), endothelial dystrophy (23), stromal dystrophy (13), lues (5), and injuries (24), failed to show convincing deviations in any of the groups from a normal control series (2900 persons). Yet, as for the herpes group, a rise in B5 must strongly be suspected. The data are presented and possible implications are discussed.

ABSTRACT

HLA-typing of 125 patients with open-angle glaucoma (glaucoma simplex) showed no statistically significant deviations from a control series of 1197 blood donors. Some earlier, but mutually inconsistent, reports contradict this result. In evaluating investigations of this kind care must be taken to avoid statistical pitfalls.

ABSTRACT

Two cases of foreign body embolism of the retinal arteries after percutaneous carotid angiography were encountered within a period of 7 months. Both patients were non-arteriosclerotic. Loss of visual function in direct relation to carotid angiography and the observation of a dark foreign body in a retinal arteriole indicated exogenous embolism. No or only slight remission occurred. Careful ophthalmoscopy in cases of visual complaints after carotid angiography is advised, and if foreign body embolism is suspected, treatment with vasodilators (e. g. amyl nitrite) should be given a trial.

ABSTRACT

10 normal eyes were examined by static perimetry along a horizontal line 60 degrees below the fixation point. All showed a greater sensitivity in the temporal hemifield. The study confirmed the previously reported existence of a step and indicated a greater threshold specifically at the hemiopic border.
