ABSTRACT

In recent years, smartphones have been integrated into rapid colorimetric sensors for heavy metal ions, but challenges persist in accuracy and efficiency. Our study introduces a novel approach to utilize biogenic gold nanoparticle (AuNP) sensors in conjunction with designing a lightbox with a color reference and machine learning for detection of Fe3+ ions in water. AuNPs were synthesized using the aqueous extract of Eleutherine bulbosa leaf as reductants and stabilizing agents. Physicochemical analyses revealed diverse AuNP shapes and sizes with an average size of 19.8 nm, with a crystalline structure confirmed via SAED and XRD techniques. AuNPs exhibited high sensitivity and selectivity in detection of Fe3+ ions through UV-vis spectroscopy and smartphones, relying on nanoparticle aggregation. To enhance image quality, we developed a lightbox and implemented a reference color value for standardization, significantly improving performance of machine learning algorithms. Our method achieved approximately 6.7% higher evaluation metrics (R 2 = 0.8780) compared to non-normalized approaches (R 2 = 0.8207). This work presented a promising tool for quantitative Fe3+ ion analysis in water.

ABSTRACT

In this comprehensive investigation, we explore the effectiveness of 55 dual-atom catalysts (DACs) supported on graphitic carbon nitride (gCN) for both alkaline and acidic hydrogen evolution reactions (HER). Employing density functional theory (DFT), we scrutinize the thermodynamic and kinetic profiles of these DACs, revealing their considerable potential across a diverse pH spectrum. For acidic HER, our results identify catalysts such as FePd-gCN, CrCr-gCN, and NiPd-gCN, displaying promising ΔGH* values of 0.0, 0.0, and -0.15 eV, respectively. This highlights their potential effectiveness in acidic environments, thereby expanding the scope of their applicability. Within the domain of alkaline HER, this study delves into the thermodynamic and kinetic profiles of DACs supported on gCN, utilizing DFT to illuminate their efficacy in alkaline HER. Through systematic evaluation, we identify that DACs such as CrCo-gCN, FeRu-gCN, and FeIr-gCN not only demonstrate favorable Gibbs free energy change (ΔGmax) for the overall water splitting reaction of 0.02, 0.27, and 0.38 eV, respectively, but also feature low activation energies (Ea) for water dissociation, with CrCo-gCN, FeRu-gCN, and FeIr-gCN notably exhibiting the Ea of just 0.42, 0.33, and 0.42 eV, respectively. The introduction of an electronic descriptor (φ), derived from d electron count (Nd) and electronegativity (ETM), provides a quantifiable relationship with catalytic activity, where a lower φ corresponds to enhanced reaction kinetics. Specifically, φ values between 4.0-4.6 correlate with the lowest kinetic barriers, signifying a streamlined HER process. Our findings suggest that DACs with optimized φ values present a robust approach for the development of high-performance alkaline HER electrocatalysts, offering a pathway towards the rational design of energy-efficient catalytic systems.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To collaboratively develop a hybrid virtual curriculum for a medical school surgery clerkship within an emerging medical university in Vietnam. DESIGN: A hybrid virtual surgery clerkship curriculum was collaboratively developed by Vietnamese and American surgeons as part of an international partnership between their respective universities. A set of 25 virtual lectures with associated materials were created and deployed in tandem with live, in-person review and skills sessions. Student quantitative and qualitative evaluation methods were developed and deployed to allow continuous iteration. A 6-month course was deployed to develop surgical faculty into effective teachers. SETTING: The curriculum was deployed at VinUniversity College of Health Sciences, the youngest medical university in Vietnam. It was developed in collaboration with the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine. Each cohort of 12 students in the surgical clerkship will participate in the curriculum. CONCLUSIONS: The development of this hybrid surgical clerkship in Vietnam leveraged local resources and expertise with those available remotely. Lessons learned are directly applicable to future collaborative curriculum development efforts at other emerging medical schools.

ABSTRACT

Probiotics are essential in the body's nutrients, improving the ratio of meat to meat, immune response, and preventing diseases. In this study, RNA-sequencing (RNA-seq) was used to identify the differentially expressed genes (DEGs), enriched related pathways, and Gene Ontology (GO) terms among blank negative control (NC), supplemented with Bacillus spp. (BS) and commercial probiotic (PC) groups after a 42-day fed supplementation. The results showed that 2005, 1356, and 2189 DEGs were significantly altered in BS vs. NC, PC vs NC, and BS vs PC groups, respectively. On the other hand, 9 DEGs were further validated by qRT-PCR, indicating that the qRT-PCR and RNA-Seq results were more consistent. Therefore, the GO and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) analyses of DEGs showed that the DEGs were mainly enriched to metabolism signalling pathways (alpha-linolenic acid metabolism, linoleic acid metabolism, tryptophan metabolism, tyrosine metabolism, ether lipid metabolism, and metabolic pathway, etc) and immune response pathways (cytokine-cytokine receptor interaction, MAPK signalling pathway, and intestinal immune network for IgA production, neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction etc). These results will provide a better understanding of the role of probiotics in chicken development and provide basic information on the genetic development of chickens.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Our study aims to evaluate the biliary anatomy variation according to the Varotti classification and its correlation with surgical outcomes for both donors and recipients undergoing living donor liver transplants (LDLTs). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 150 LDLT cases performed at a single center in Vietnam with preoperative radiologic evaluations and intraoperative surgical assessments to identify biliary variant anatomy. Postoperative biliary complications were documented and analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed to determine any significant associations between biliary variations and post-transplant outcomes. RESULTS: One hundred fifty cases of LDLT at 108 Military Central Hospital from October 2017 to December 2022 were included in our study. Among the donors, the mean age was 30.89 ± 7.23, with male predominance (77.3%). The prevalence of type 1 biliary anatomy was 84.67%. Type 2, 3a, 3b, 4a, and 4b accounted for 5.33%, 2.67%, 5.33%, 0.67%, and 1.33% of cases, respectively. Donors' complications were witnessed in 7 cases (4.67%), and all needed intervention (Clavien-Dindo grade 3). Biliary complications were found in 36 (24.0%) recipients, with 22 (14.67%) cases of biliary stenosis and 16 (10.67%) cases of biliary leak, including 2 cases encountering both complications. Age, gender, graft type, preoperative liver function, biliary variant anatomy, number of graft orifices, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, and blood loss were not significant risk factors for recipients' biliary complications. Cold ischemia time significantly increased the biliary complication rate. CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that biliary variant anatomy is common in living liver donors. Such variations should not be a contraindication to liver donation. However, accurate pre- and intraoperative radiologic and surgical evaluations are fundamental for a careful reconstruction plan.

ABSTRACT

Backgrounds/Aims: Pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD) is the only radical treatment for periampullary malignancies. Superior mesenteric artery (SMA) first approach combined with total meso-pancreas (MP) excision was conducted to improve the oncological results. There has not been any previous research of a technique that combines the SMA first approach and total MP excision with a detailed description of the MP macroscopical shape. Methods: We prospectively assessed 77 patients with periampullary malignancies between October 2020 and March 2022 (18 months). All patients had undergone PD with SMA first approach combined total MP excision. The perioperative indications, clinical data, intra-operative index, R0 resection rate of postoperative pathological specimens (especially mesopancreatic margin), postoperative complications, and follow-up results were evaluated. Results: The median operative time was 289.6 min (178-540 min), the median intraoperative blood loss was 209 mL (30-1,600 mL). Microscopically, there were 19 (24.7%) cases with metastatic MP, and five cases (6.5%) with R1-resection of the MP. The number of lymph nodes (LNs) harvested and metastatic LNs were 27.2 (maximum was 74) and 1.8 (maximum was 16), respectively. Some (46.8%) patients had pancreatic fistula, but mostly in grade A, with 7 patients (9.1%) who required re-operations. Some 18.2% of cases developed postoperative refractory diarrhea. The rate of in-hospital mortality was 1.3%. Conclusions: The PD with SMA first approach combined TMpE for periampullary malignancies was effective in achieving superior oncological statistics (rate of MP R0-resection and number of total resected LNs) with non-inferior short-term outcomes. It is necessary to evaluate survival outcomes with long-term follow-up.

ABSTRACT

This study aims to investigate climate change's impact on health and adaptation in Vietnam through a systematic review and additional analyses of heat exposure, heat vulnerability, awareness and engagement, and projected health costs. Out of 127 reviewed studies, findings indicated the wider spread of infectious diseases, and increased mortality and hospitalisation risks associated with extreme heat, droughts, and floods. However, there are few studies addressing health cost, awareness, engagement, adaptation, and policy. Additional analyses showed rising heatwave exposure across Vietnam and global above-average vulnerability to heat. By 2050, climate change is projected to cost up to USD1-3B in healthcare costs, USD3-20B in premature deaths, and USD6-23B in work loss. Despite increased media focus on climate and health, a gap between public and government publications highlighted the need for more governmental engagement. Vietnam's climate policies have faced implementation challenges, including top-down approaches, lack of cooperation, low adaptive capacity, and limited resources.

INTRODUCTION: Pancreaticoduodenectomy in patients with CA stenosis due to median arcuate ligament often required carefully collateral pathways management to avoid hepatic ischemic complications. CASES PRESENTATION: Case 1: A 63-year-old man was referred to our department because of jaundice with distal common bile duct tumor. Pancreaticoduodenectomy with left posterior SMA first approach and circumferential lymphadenectomy was performed. Case 2: A 48-year-old man was referred to our department because of right-upper-quadrant abdominal pain with Vater tumor. Laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy with left posterior SMA first approach and circumferential lymphadenectomy was performed. Postoperatively, in all two cases, three-dimensional reconstruction images showed developed collateral pathways around the pancreatic head, and the CA was stenosis in 75% and 70% due to MAL, respectively. Intraoperatively, in all two cases, we confirmed poor blood flow in the common hepatic artery (CHA) by palpation and observation. So that in the first case, we have decided to proceed a no-touch technique of GDA segmental resection en bloc with the tumor and reconstructed with an end-to-end GDA anastomosis; in the second cases, we have decided to proceed gastroduodenal collateral preservation. When preserving these collateral pathways, we confirmed that the PHA flow remained pulsatile as an indicator that the blood flow was adequate. CONCLUSION: Celiac axis stenosis was a rare but difficult-to-managed condition associated with pancreaticoduodenectomy. Collateral pathways management depends on variety of collateral pathways.

ABSTRACT

We present the in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) through ionotropic gelation utilizing the biodegradable saccharides lactose (Lac) and alginate (Alg). The lactose reduced silver ions to form AgNPs. The crystallite structure of the nanocomposite AgNPs@Lac/Alg, with a mean size of 4-6 nm, was confirmed by analytical techniques. The nanocomposite exhibited high catalytic performance in degrading the pollutants methyl orange and rhodamine B. The antibacterial activity of the nanocomposite is pH-dependent, related to the alterations in surface properties of the nanocomposite at different pH values. At pH 6, the nanocomposite demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity. These findings suggest that this nanocomposite has the potential to be tailored for specific applications in environmental and medicinal treatments, making it a highly promising material.

INTRODUCTION: Transarterial hepatic chemoembolization (TACE) has been used to treat unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma and has gained widespread acceptance as a treatment for both primary and secondary hepatic malignancies. CASE REPORT: We report a case of 78-year-old male patient with chronic hepatitis B, diagnosed with HCC. He underwent the second TACE, and right after the procedure, the patient abruptly developed bilateral lower extremities motor weakness and sensory impairment below the T10 dermatome. Spinal magnetic resonance imaging showed T2-weighted scans showed increased intramedullary signal strength at the T1-T12 level. The patient received supportive care, ongoing rehabilitation, and steroid pulse therapy. The motor strength remained unchanged, but the sensory deficiencies practically disappeared. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: The hepatic artery injury or decreased flow at the prior TACE site, which causes collateral recruitment, can explain why spinal cord injury following TACE typically happens after the second or third session. It can occasionally result from accidental embolized spinal branches originating from intercostal or lumbar collateral arteries. In our case, we hypothesize the embolism caused the infarction to the spinal cord travel through the connection between the lateral branches of the right inferior phrenic artery and the intercostal arteries, which supply the spinal cord through the anterior spinal artery. CONCLUSIONS: TACE in rare case can have severe complications. A tailored therapeutic strategy, including consideration of a shunt and selection of the vessels utilized for the Lipiodol infusion prior to TACE, is crucial to achieving an optimal end outcome to avert these significant consequences.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic pancreatitis is characterized by irreversible structural damage, including fibrosis and compression of the pancreatic ducts, often leading to stones forming in the pancreatic duct and parenchyma. Surgery is indicated when severe obstruction with chronic pain is presented and conventionally drained by pancreatojejunostomy. CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old female patient with epigastric pain for many years. Computed tomography revealed an atrophic pancreas with a dilated pancreatic duct (18 mm) obstructed by a stone sized 1.3 cm. The patient underwent laparoscopic pancreatic duct exploration, used electrohydraulic lithotripsy for pancreatic duct stones, and then placed pancreaticoduodenal internal drainage with primary closure of the pancreatic duct. The operative time was 185 min, and the total blood loss was around 50 ml without intraoperative complication. The patient was discharged from the hospital on postoperative day 5 uneventfully. The epigastric pain symptoms dramatically decreased in the follow-up visit after one month. CLINICAL DISCUSSION: We combined several minimally invasive techniques to treat a chronic pancreatitis patient with a stone forming in the main duct in this patient. We used lithotripsy and internal drainage without the need for anastomosis. To our knowledge, this is the first report on this technique in literature. We found this technique is safe and applicable in selected patients to treat pancreatic stones with the dilated pancreatic duct. CONCLUSIONS: In this case, we demonstrate a novel surgical treatment option for chronic pancreatitis with a simple and effective technique to manage pancreatic stones in chronic pancreatitis patients.

Evaluating the results of laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) using indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence. Materials and methods: This is a cross-sectional study of patients with LC using real-time fluorescent ICG to treat gallbladder disease from May 2021 to May 2022 in the 108 Military Central Hospital. Results: There were 68 patients who underwent LC using intraoperative ICG fluorescence for bile duct visualization. The mean age of the patients was 55.4±16.2, and the male/female ratio was 1.52. Chronic cholecystitis caused by stones accounted for the majority (51.47%). The authors detected 7.35% of cases with anatomical changes of the extrahepatic biliary tract using ICG fluorescence and clearly identified the anatomy of the common bile duct and the cystic duct at 100 and 92.65%, respectively. The average surgical time was 42.8±14.6 min. There were no postoperative complications or side effects from ICG; the average hospital stay was 2.8±1.5 days. Conclusions: ICG fluorescence cholangiography allows surgeons to easily identify critical anatomical landmarks in the LC. Thereby helping the surgery to be performed safely, avoiding severe complications due to damage to the biliary tract.

Introduction: Invasive Candida infection, or candidiasis, especially in gastrointestinal tract (GIT) is an infrequent but aggressive disease caused by Candida species. Candidiasis of gastrojejunostomosis after extensive gastrointestinal surgery may cause serious complications such as perforative peritonitis and anastomotic stenosis, which requires surgical interventions. Case presentation: Our two patients had undergone pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), respectively, due to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms of the pancreatic head. Both the patients were malnutritioned and debilitated before the surgery, and they required reoperation for postoperative Candidiasis-relevant complication.In the first case, the patient was readmitted to the hospital with symptoms of perforative peritonitis, for which he underwent surgery and had Candida found in both gastrojejunostomosis ulcer and peritoneal fluid. In our second case, the patient was admitted to the hospital twice after the first operation and diagnosed with Candida-induced gastrojejunostomosis stenosis by esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) and endoscopic biopsy. Fluconazole was indicated for a 2-week regimen. Blood sample withdrawn afterward showed no evidence of fungal agents, and the anastomotic stenosis responded well to treatment. However, after 3 weeks, he came back with cachexia and symptoms of gastrojejunostomotic stenosis. EGD showed no image of fungal agents but anastomotic stenosis due to chronic inflammatory process. The patient was then reoperated to redo his gastrojejunostomosis. Conclusion: Candidiasis of gastrojejunostomosis after extensive gastrointestinal surgery such as PD is a very aggressive condition that may cause perforative peritonitis and anastomotic stenosis. However, there have been no publications on this disorder, and the strategic treatment remains unknown. We hereby present a report of two cases with postoperative gastrojejunostomosis candidiasis presenting with non-specific but aggressive and early clinical symptoms.

INTRODUCTION: Left-sided pancreatic cancers are uncommon but seem more aggressive than tumors of pancreatic head. Radical antegrade modular pancreato-splenectomy (RAMPS) was proved to have safe and effective advantages while comparing with standard retrograde pancreato-splenectomy (SRPS) in recent systematic literature reviews and meta-analyses. Laparoscopic SMA first-approach RAMPS was recently proceeded with optimistic perioperative outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: Our patient is a 67-year-old female with a medical history of diabetes and hypertension, recruited because of upper left quadrant abdominal pain. She was referred for pancreato-splenectomy because of a 3-cm-sized mass in distal pancreas. We use 5 trocars and the patient placed in a Trendelenburg position. The retroperitoneum is opened at the left-posterior side of the meso-pancreato-duodenum along to the inframesocolic space, so that the anterior surface of the aorta (AO), inferior vena cave (IVC), left renal vein (LRV), left adrenal grand (LAG), and kidney are completely exposed. The inferior border of the pancreas had been dissected and separated from the superior mesenteric vein (SMV) below the pancreatic isthmus, removed the lymph nodes (LNs) groups 14v and 17. Then, dissect of LNs groups 7,8,9,11p,12 en bloc at the superior side of the pancreas. Dissection of LNs group 14p, d or SMA LNs after transecting the pancreas. The operation time was 240 min, the estimated blood loss was 200 ml. With no postoperative complications as well as no diarrhea, the patient was discharged on the POD10 uneventfully. Pathological result: pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma with T2N1 staging and negative margin (R0). CONCLUSIONS: This technique was safe and effective to perform precise and complete lymphadenectomy and negative posterior resection in total laparoscopic left-posterior SMA first-approach RAMPS for distal pancreatic cancer.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVES: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a lingering progressive neurodegenerative disorder that causes patients to lose cognitive function. The enzyme Acetylcholinesterase (AChE), Butyrylcholinesterase (BuChE), Monoamine oxidase A (MAO A), Beta-secretase cleavage enzyme (BACE 1) and N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors play an important role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. Therefore, inhibiting enzymes is an effective method to treat Alzheimer disease. In this study, we evaluated in silico inhibitory effects of AChE, BuChE, MAO A, BACE 1 and NMDA enzyme of Huperzia squarrosa's compounds. METHODS: The three-dimensional (3D) of N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (PDB ID: 1PBQ), enzyme ß-secretase 1 (PDB ID: 4X7I), enzyme monoamine oxidase A (PDB ID: 2Z5X), enzyme butyrylcholinesterase (PDB ID: 4BDS) and enzyme acetylcholinesterase (PDB ID: 1EVE) were retrieved from the Protein Data Bank RCSB. Molecular docking was done by Autodock vina software and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation of the ligand-protein complex with the least binding energy pose was perfomed by MOE. Lipinski Rule of Five is used to compare compounds with drug-like and non-drug-like properties. Pharmacokinetic parameters of potential compounds were evaluated using the pkCSM tool. RESULTS: Based on previous publication of Huperzia squarrosa, we have collected 15 compounds. In these compounds, huperzine B, huperzinine, lycoposerramine U N-oxide, 12-epilycodine N-oxide showed strongly inhibit the five AChE, BuChE, MAO A, BACE 1 and NMDA targets for Alzheimer's treatment. Lipinski rule of five and ADMET predict have shown that four above compounds have drug-likeness properties, good absorption ability and cross the blood-brain barrier, which have the most potential to become drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer's in the future. Furthermore, MD study showed that huperzine B and huperzinine have stability of the docking pose with NMDA target. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, we found two natural compounds in Huperzia squarrosa including Huperzine B and Huperzinine have drug-likeness properties, good absorption ability and cross the blood-brain barrier, which have potential to become drugs for the treatment of Alzheimer's in the future.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Extended resection such as right trisegmentectomy combined with total caudate lobectomy with non-touch technique for advanced hilar cholangiocarcinoma (CCA) is still challenging for all Hepato-pancreato-biliary surgeons. PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old female with advanced hilar CCA involved the right intrahepatic bile ducts in continuity with the left medial sectional bile duct without PV invasion had undergone right trisegmentectomy combined with total caudate lobectomy with non-touch technique. Dissection of the hepatic peduncle by Lorta-Jacob Procedure, ligation, and resection of the right hepatic artery (RHA) and the right portal vein (PV), before that determine whether portal bifurcation's tumor infiltration or not. Mobilization of the right liver lobe, ligate all the short hepatic veins from the caudal to cranial direction, as well as the right hepatic vein (RHV) and the middle hepatic vein (MHV). Complete caudate lobectomy with right-left approach. Determine hepatic parenchyma cut, left cholangiostomy to the division of the subsegments 2,3, stitch formation of the subsegments 2,3 bile duct. Determine negative upper section of the biliary tract. The operative time was 432 min, and the blood loss was 750 ml. Postoperative recovery was uneventful without any major complications but developed intra-abdominal abscess that required percutaneous drainage. DISCUSSION: Extended resection procedures such as extend right/left trisectionectomy, hepato-pancreaticoduodenectomy (HPD) and/or combined vascular resection are only curative treatment for advanced hilar CCA. There hadn't been any reported cases describing step-by-step right trisegmentectomy combined with total caudate lobectomy with non-touch technique with clear illustrations and videos yet. CONCLUSION: Careful preparation with preoperative biliary drainage as well as precise evaluation of the functional capacity of the future liver remnant, as well as meticulous experience of surgeons in hepatic anatomy and non-touch resection technique are key points for success in extended resection for advanced hilar CCA.

BACKGROUND: Tumors located in the caudate lobe may be primary tumor or metastases from other sites. Isolated caudate lobectomy (ICL) is a challenging procedure due to its complex structure and location. The access route to the caudate lobe has an important role in the success of the operation. METHODS: Based on the characteristics of the segment I location, which is the part of the liver located in front of the vena cava, below the hepatic veins, and cranial to the hilar plate, our approach aims to isolate the entire caudate lobe from these anatomical structures with the following steps: dissecting the caudate lobe from the hilar plate and isolating the caudate lobe from the IVC and from the hepatic veins along with parenchymal resection. RESULTS: We report two successful cases with the Glissonean pedicle transection method described by Takasaki and the combined right- and left-side approach: a 63-year-old female patient with a 46-mm-in-diameter HCC tumor and a 39-year-old female patient with a 45-mm lesion and the pathological result was focal nodular hyperplasia. CONCLUSIONS: We found this to be a safe and effective approach, which can be applied to all cases of benign tumors or in the case of malignant tumors located entirely in the caudate lobe when extended hepatic resection is not possible due to poor liver function or small remnant liver volume.

INTRODUCTION: Donor liver graft quality plays an especially important role that contributes to the success of organ transplantation. Almost all local and international authors are interested in the techniques and results of transplantation, however, in Vietnam, there have not been any studies that report the results of liver procurement from brain-dead donors from a technical perspective as well as the morphology and function of the transplanted organ. MATERIALS AND METHOD: This study is descriptive cross-section study with analysis of retrospective occurrences of a series of cases of liver procurement from brain-dead donors from March 2010 to March 2020. All cases were proceeded the multiple organ procurement with warm liver dissection and in vivo cannulation and perfusion. RESULTS: The average age of brain-dead donors was 29.7 ± 10.7 (18-69), 92.16% of the harvested organs were of good quality macroscopically; and the rate of anatomical modification was 33.3% that occurred mostly in the left hepatic artery (LHA). Technically, warm dissection was proceeded in majority of cases (98,0%), the graft implantation was performed by this technique with mean cold ischemia time (CIT) of 190,0 ± 100,5 min and WIT of 74,0 ± 39,2 s. There were no complications relating to graft injuries occurring during procurement and no primary liver failure, good results accounted for 94.1% of the total number of transplants postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Multiple organ procurement with warm liver dissection and in vivo cannulation and perfusion was a safe technique and may be effective by avoiding any donor's damages in cold-phase dissection.

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the effects of nutritional interventions on gastrointestinal cancer patients receiving chemotherapy is not well documented. This study aims to assess the effects of nutritional intervention in patients diagnosed with stomach and colon cancer receiving chemotherapy in Vietnam. METHODS: A quasi-experiment with intervention and control groups for pre- and post-intervention was carried out in cancer patients receiving chemotherapy in a university hospital in Vietnam. Patients in the intervention group were provided nutritional counseling, personalized specific dietary advice, and received oral nutrition supplements (ONSs) while patients in the control group only received nutrition counseling. RESULTS: The weight in the intervention and control group after 2 months increased significantly by 1.4 ± 2.6 kg and 0.4 ± 2.3 kg, respectively. Muscle mass increased by 1.2 ± 4.1 cm in the intervention group, while those in the control group decreased by 0.55 ± 2.77 cm. There was no statistical significance between two groups after intervention in terms of Mid-Upper Arm Circumference (MUAC) and percentage of fat. The percentage of malnutrition based on the Scored Patient-Generated Subjective Global Assessment (PG-SGA) and Body Mass Index (BMI) declined after the intervention in both groups. According to the average treatment effect on the treated (ATT) using the propensity score matching and DiD method, participants receiving the intervention were more likely to have a higher score of weight (Coef = 0.84; 95%CI = 0.47; 2.16) and muscle mass (Coef = 1.08; 95%CI = 0.09; 2.06) between pre- and post-intervention. By contrast, the PG-SGA scores on treated participants were more likely to decrease after the intervention (Coef = -1.28; 95%CI = -4.39; -0.84). After matching, being female, living in rural areas, or having stomach cancer were still positively related to being moderately/severely malnourished by the PG-SGA, and these findings were statistically significant (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The nutritional interventions had a positive effect on weight gain, muscle mass, and reduced malnutrition. Further studies with a longer follow-up duration are needed to confirm the effects of the intervention.

This study was conducted to investigate the genetic diversity of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) and its coinfecting pathogens in pigs with respiratory disease in Vietnam. Samples from 127 clinical cases were obtained from different southern provinces of Vietnam from January 2018 to January 2020 for PCR and sequence analysis. The infection rate of PCV2 was 78.8%, and the major pathogens found in coinfections with PCV2 were porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, and Haemophilus parasuis. Forty-three PCV2-positive clinical samples were selected for amplification and sequencing of the ORF2 region. Phylogenetic analysis of PCV2 ORF2 showed that five of the sequences belonged to PCV2b (11.6%) and 38 belonged to PCV2d (88.4%), indicating that PCV2d strains were predominant in southern provinces of Vietnam. Alignment of the predicted amino acid sequences of the PCV2 capsid protein revealed polymorphic sites in the antibody recognition regions. This study demonstrates the prevalence of the PCV2d genotype in southern Vietnam and presents a comprehensive overview of the coinfecting pathogens associated with PCV2 in young pigs with respiratory disease.
